This is how I remembered Chow in the movies. When I heard he was making an american film I was excited but I was disappointed instead. Hollywood hasn't utilized him to the fullest.
Wow,I can't believe this clip on YT over 13 years old. I saw the movie in the 90's and definitely need to watch it again. It's not just rice, it's family!
This whole scene is hysterically funny, no question. I have to confess that my favorite bit is when the cop walks in, sees the situation, and has that look on his face like, "Oh God, who is it THIS week?" 😅😅
Absolutely. Definetly the coolest guy that ever walked Earth. He can do physical scenes, drama, comedy... I saw The Corruptor the other day. Chow cracked me up^^. "Learned some English? Good!" "Peaches are shit! Haven't you heard that Sinatra song? 'Of the tree of life, I picked myself a plum'. Not a peach, A PLUM."
Having heard about interviews with Chow Yun Fat where he kind of stays quiet about his movie work, but gets very excited when there's questions about food and cooking... I do imagine that part of this scene was inspired by his own love of food
It is Chow Yun-fat's voice and all the other main actors do their own voice dubbing to my knowledge which includes the late Leslie Cheung. John Woo directed Face off and MI:2 in America, but they don't compare to his trademark works in Hong Kong like The Killer and Hard Boiled. Shot with a small percentage of his Hollywood film budgets but with much more style, action and imagination. The Hong Kong films that Woo made are the ones that will define him as a film-maker.
What could compare? The only American film he made that even came close to his HK work was “Face/Off.” They completely misused him and all the other Chinese directors they used to cash in on the HK action craze. They brought them to Hollywood to make movies like they did in Hong Kong, but then they completely undercut them with bullshit scripts and cinematic red tape. No wonder John went back to directing in Hong Kong.
Had this on VHS as a kid in the UK, then bought a Spanish Bluray edition. Selected Cantonese with Spanish subtitles and my heart sank to find out that the dub on this bluray ALSO dubbed the gangsters into Cantonese as well! I had no idea that they'd done that on some versions. It's not "as beautiful for me", but oh well.
No version beats the original U.K. dubbing from the 90’s man. I recorded it off of sky movies in 1995 haha they showed a John Woo special, every night for 4 or 5 days.
@@djhabibi04 oh crap I just checked!!! I’ve always heard the name “Bullet in the head” I just assumed it was the film with the Lounge singer that went blind... but that was “The Killer”! Which means I have not seen this, looks good too. Just saw 2 minutes of the ‘Camp’ scene where they think they’ve captured American CIA and kill the guys wanting to go back to Hong Kong... No better time to watch it we’re locked down
That's definetly Chow that does his own dubbing, yeah. His voice is very distinct, and you can tell it's him if you listen to the parts where he flips out. "APOLOGIZE TO THE RICE, RIGHT NOW!" for example. I love Chows voice=D And, well, I don't know which white guy you're talking about, but I think the black guy at the end is the only cop in this scene.
actually the word in Cantonese in direct translation is "ghost dude". It was more of an ethnic term for Han Chinese(especially Hong Kongers) to call the caucasians in Hong Kong. In the Sinocentric(Han-centric) world, everything "alien" is termed in something "less than human". So Non-Chinese like Japanese, Caucasians, Southeast Asians, Central Asians, and even people who live in south China who were not of Han ethnicity, would be called Animals, barbarians, or "ghost dudes".
I think the American actors (possible British) are dubbed by Chinese English speakers and Fat just winged his own English. His accent was spotty lmao I thought for a second he was getting dubbed and then he kept getting undubbed or something but it was just the way he spoke.
I dunno someone has a subtitled version of the movie on this site (in parts of course) I think his name is mskridr or something like that. It should be the original version
I remember after seeing this with my friend we went to a Chinese restraunt and I had an airsoft Beretta 92FS and we created a scene on purpose when he shouted:"This fucking fried rice stinks!" So I went to his table we re-enacted the whole scene but without the Police officer. It was so funny when I pulled out the airsoft gun and everyone in the restaurants faces fell flat, it was hilarious.
They don't, do they? I've been looking for good subs for John Woo's movies forever...! Because the subs I seen, they all mess up the narration so it's really hard to get ahold of what's happening.
You can write a master class on over dubbing English with English. This happens alot with movie studios and home release dubs because the producers think it's more paletteable.
never seen that one I don't eat Fried rice now when I go the the Chinese Restaurant i get brown rice weather it chicken shrimp rice I ask them to make it with brown rice. it better for you.
“For you, rice nothing. But for us, rice just like my father and mother. DON’T F*CK WITH MY FAMILY.” Those have to be the best lines of all time.

Chow Yun Fat is a fucking legend!!!! Too bad Americans fail to recognize his greatness!
its not that they didn't recognize it, they just knew how offensive it would be to their audience at the time so they couldn't promote this
"APOLOGIZE TO THE RICE RIGHT NOW" LOL

its borderline offensive, if you were allowed to be offensive about american accents, but we arent, so im not

I love how the American actors voice is dubbed and Chow's voice isn't dubbed despite the fact he is Chinese lol.
They're all dubbed, that's how they did voices and sounds in Hong Kong movies in the 80s.
