Sleepy teens: A public health epidemic | Wendy Troxel | TEDxManhattanBeach

  • Sleep deprivation - What most parents, teachers, and school administrators think of as just part of being a teenager, Rand Corporation sleep scientist Wendy Troxel labels loss of teen sleep a public health epidemic. Not a function of being social or participating in social media, Wendy believes sleep loss is mostly due to school start times - a matter of public policy.
Dr. Troxel’s research focuses on the interface between sleep, the social environment, and health, and on implications for public policy.
Her research is supported by the Department of Defense and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. As an active clinical psychologist, Dr. Troxel helps patients overcome sleep disorders through behavioral (nonpharmacologic) treatment. She was the founding director of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine-an accredited training program in Behavioral Sleep Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. She continues to provide research and clinical training opportunities for graduate and postdoctoral students interested in sleep medicine. She also holds leadership roles in several professional sleep societies, is an Associate Editor for the journal “Sleep Health”, and has been involved in local and national efforts focused on healthy school start times for adolescents.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The Undying Fighter this is me most school days, which is why I start homework at 9 or10 and go to sleep around 11-12. Thankfully I have a car now so I can get away with waking up at 7:40 and barely making it to school on time at 8:15. I’m usually alright after third period but get tired after lunch, during my hard classes, which I didn’t do as well in partially because that’s when I get tired. Then my energy picks up about one or two hours from when I get back from school, I get tired again, and am awake when I’m supposed to be sleeping. We talked about this in school and the teenager sleep problem, but nobody’s done anything about it because it would “inconvenience the elementary parents and they’d have to change the bus routes”. If they picked up the elementary kids first, and then went back later around 8:30 to pick up the middle school and high schoolers to start school at 9, I wouldn’t complain. Plus scores would probably go up a lot considering they place our standardized tests in the morning before lunch when many of us are tired and didn’t have time to get breakfast. I’m just saying. Sorry for the rant.

They see how generations are billions of years ahead of the older generation's intellect (not intelligence, INTELLECT) due to videogames, and try so hard to downgrade the actual education we need by claiming "videogames cause violence" - they don't want newer generations to come to be different, because god forbid you express an opinion associated with videogames. I was gonna study on the bus because I *fell asleep last night...* when will I sleep now? I only got like... three hours last night...”

Your state issues out useless end of semester exams you have to take, which then pushes back education so you have to learn more useless things, and then that means you don't get as much free time, then it turns into bringing it all home, and then your sleep is affected. It's not always the school's fault. But we do need to hold the state and the district accountable.

If you can't it's because you're not giving the body what it evolved to need for sleep. #1 If you live in a wintery/cloudy climate invest in sunrise alarm clocks that will fill your room with light in the morning. #2 install a program called flux on your computer which will eliminate blue-light from the screen after a certain hour. #3 Drink some water when you wake up. Hydration helps with alertness. #4 no eating anything for at least 2.5 hrs before bedtime. These things will help fix it.

She’s no longer ADHD, ODD or learning disabled. 3mo after she was last tested and was retested....no evidence of ANY of this! School district was stunned. All boiled down to less stress and more sleep. She was spending until midnight on homework because she wasn’t understanding. Then she’d wake up early to go over it again. That's how I was too! When I was a freshman in college my classes all started at 10/10:30 am at the earliest and it was PERFECT for me. I'd sleep until 9, go to classes, and be SO much more alert/awake for them. Going to a class at 7 or 8 in the morning was just too early for me! I'd be exhausted during those classes and not be able to learn! Some of us learn better later in the day.

    • @brookles6177
      @brookles6177 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

i wasn't quite so lucky as a freshman, because I did have classes where the only section left when I registered or that fit with the rest of my schedule was a 7:30. Those days sucked, but the other days, not so much. After I became a junior it slowly started becoming easier for me to wake up early. Now that I'm a senior, I can easily fall asleep earlier, and wake up earlier. It is pretty easy to feel how your biological clock shifts. My 730 classes are a bit early for my internal clock, but I only wake up about an hour earlier than I naturally do on the weekends, so the adjustment isn't as extreme as getting less than 5 hours of sleep.

My high school used to to start at 7:30 and get out at 2:30 now it starts at 8:30 and doesn’t release until 3:50. My point being I have no after school time to do anything I want to do with all the homework I’m getting.
The better point to her argument I would say is that we should shorten school all together. When I don’t have enough time to do what I want I stay up later. But if I had the time to do what I wanted and not have to worry about homework then I would go to sleep earlier. I feel really bad for the kids who have sports, and extra curriculum activities they have to complete and have to go to sleep by 10.
Nothing is gonna change from personal experience. I get up at 6:00 every morning just to go to my 8:30 high school. SHORTEN SCHOOL HOURS!!

If I could go back and do it again it wasn’t worth it, but at the same time how was I supposed to know? I was 14 years old and everybody pressures you to do more and try more. Everybody wanted me to do more and when you say your tired they say “you’re young” But now that I’m on seizure medications, can’t get my drivers lisence, and have severe anxiety of having more seizures was it worth it? Is it still worth it for schools and parents to pressure teens to do more?

Everything in this video was spot on. I moved to a new school district in my junior year and went from waking up at 6:30 to waking up at 5, I was taking all honors and AP classes, and had ungodly amounts of homework. On top of all that, I naturally tend to stay up late because I have the most energy at that time meaning that I would just start doing my homework around 7 and finally finish around 1. And when I finish my homework and go straight to bed I'm anxious and stressed for the next day's tests and assignments and can't fall asleep for another hour. Plus an hour bus ride every morning because of heavy traffic. Some days it didn't even feel like I was the one getting out of bed. I felt completely dead every single day. I'm so glad that there's someone who's not blindly blaming teens for being "lazy." Most of us are the complete opposite.

I just graduated but I can tell you there were SO many depressed kids in my school. I highly think the lack of sleep has something to do with it. We get yelled at for napping in class, drinking caffeine, substance abuse, being "grumpy", lazy/tired but it's not even all of our own faults. We're expected to drive and have a job. When we wake up at 6 AM and sleep around 1 AM (late shift) that's barely enough to get through the next day. I wish jobs/schools were more tolerant.

She let me sleep in (because I was homeschooled) to when I would naturally get up. But once she got ahold of Pinterest and other social media... "Hey, it says here from someone I don't know and has no medical ethos, that if your kid sleeps until 9, they are more likely to have depression!" So guess who was forced to get up at 8 from then on?... And guess who got diagnosed with depression soon after? (Which mom still blamed on me sleeping too much) yeah.... It sucks.

This! This whole talk. I can't tell you how many days I went to high school completely fogged up and miserable because I never got enough sleep. It didn't matter when I planned to go to bed, because my teachers gave us an inane amount of work to do (to be due the next day) and then I was expected to have a job, and we never got done on time, so I got 5 hours sleep tops. Then you're expected to be doing your best in school when really you can barely get food down your throat before running to a bus stop where the bus packs everyone in to a school where kids are "tired and wired" and easily agitated. Then the teachers would yell at you if you weren't paying attention. How could I pay attention when I was constantly sleep deprived? Also, what was the point of repeating the same lesson of American history four years in a row? The policy needs to change. Teenagers develop in a specific way and there needs to stop being an expectation that teens need to be adults immediately. That is an insane person thought.
