In our country we dont have central heating in homes in winters. I use a hot water bottle to heat my bed and it INSTANTLY puts me to sleep. It gets cold after a couple of hours bcoz the water loses its heat. I read the comments and people want to know how to achieve the temperature difference. Therefore I have shared my experience here.
What country? How cold are the winters? I was born and live in Canada, so we have cold winters (with the exception of coastal cities like Vancouver-winters are still a bit cold but less so than inland) and warm to hot summers. We use, at least for heating, programmable thermostats and either electricity or natural gas heating. In the summer, many also use air conditioning to cool off.
Hot water bottle, brings back good memories of my childhood in Africa, tucked in by my mom in bed with one. I'm gonna buy a red one and use it this winter.
I massage my feet and temples before going to bed with oil infused with lavender essential oil. While lying try to listen to sounds around me and slowly increase the radius and I go into deep sleep.
Sleep quality improving is a massive undertaking which explains why sleep issues are ubiquitous. One step is too tiny but still a step. the best thing that taking even a single step does is that i draws attention to the issue and bring others steps in So keep at it and good luck with good sleep
She says that a cool bed is the magic factor for deep restful sleep but how do you achieve this? I’ve heard of heat pads but never cool ones…. And how would you make it come on at the right time.? This apparently crucial factor is just mentioned in one sentence without any idea of how to do it?? Or have I missed something?
I start around 7pm cutting AC down to around 66°, minimal warm colored area lighting, and believe it or not, a cup of coffee which really relaxes me. I'm nodding out by 9pm.
So... how do you fix it? Some actual techniques or tips would have helped. But- I am very thankful for the information and very sorry for the loss of her son.
She sells a product called the Chili pad. I've heard a couple negative reviews but the feedback is overwhelmingly positive. Keeps you cool as you sleep. I'm probably going to buy one before this Summer (helps you save on A/C as well).
Good information but I've listened to this twice and she may as well be speaking a foreign language as I still have no idea what she's advocating to do specifically.
Jonathan D. She's managing the temperature of her bed/ bedroom to beginning sleep time at 60 to 68 degrees to help her get the first 4 hours of sleep and then having the temp slowly raise to get rem sleep. The question is is How?

@@annettetilley1223 I'm not sure how she did it, but you can purchase something to control your body temperature on your side of the bed at a Sleep Number store. It's like personal climate control.
Waking up at night is normal and natural. The sleeping process comprises five cycles that last 90 minutes on average. In the beginning, the individual shuts the body down through stages 1 and 2, then goes to deep sleep and REM sleep. After rest, he comes up to stages 1 and 2 again. Most people come to stage 2 to restart the process. Some individuals come to the surface, hence waking up. There is no big deal. Do whatever you have to do and go back to bed. Sleep and rest alternate during the night. Do not fret when you come to the surface. Often this happens when the individual has issues in his mind, breathing problems, or urinary issues. Do whatever you have to do and go back to bed. Insomnia is always a symptom and not a cause. Address the cause to solve the problem. Always remember that it is normal and natural to wake up at night. Sleep is a transient loss of consciousness; the less we lose consciousness, the better. Elephants and Giraffes sleep 2 hours at night on average.
So what is the exact recipe? Being a scientist she could have provided a replicable plan. Is it just turn your thermostat down twice during the night??
How do you control the temperature in your room to make it warm up in the morning? I think I like to be in a cool room, which isn't always possible. I saw an apparatus at a Sleep Number store that controls the micro-climate of your side of the bed. Do you use something like that? I purchased one of their beds and it has a foot warmer to help you fall asleep. I'll have to see if it can be put on a timer to start up before I get up in the morning. Nice talk. I'm so sorry about your son. God bless!
i think she's making an advert for her company, "chiliPad" because she somewhat explains what she did for her light sleep, but then she just says "i put cooling underneath my body", great, what. ice cubes?... same with REM sleep, she used her "recipe". Well, considering average price on her website is between £250-£400 I guess they're not selling that well.
"Less than 6 hours" Not sure if its true. It really depends. Some Yogis can sleep as short as 3h and still live long and healthy life. Point is to make ur sleep very effective, its depends on ur whole life style and mind condition.
I'm always puzzled by the advice to sleep in a cooler room. Being cold keeps me awake. I need to keep my room warm, and I need to be wrapped up, or I can't relax. My nose gets particularly cold, and one can't cover one's nose with the blankets! (Yes, my thyroid function is normal.) That being said, I'm in favor of what works for each person. I often don't understand the TED organization's biases. I got here from Jim Donovan's talk on music for sleep. If his presentation wasn't flagged for "falling outside the content guidelines," why was this one?
because you need to be warm from within that in chinese they say kidney yang deficient. activate mingmen and du14 acupoints. also place hands under back (near kidneys) before sleep. but I think its normal to appreciate warm temperature so I think its a personal balance. when yang is stronger the body can be exposed more to cool air (in theory)
One of the worst Ted Talks I've listened to. She gives the different stages of sleep....but as far as I can tell, no specifics on actually improving sleep. Total waste of time.
Check to see you don't have sleep apnea/overweight. If you do, Keto, no sugar, low carbs get in shape. early morning sleep will sometime stimulate. REM=Dreaming.
Even a better strategy is cold conditioning by taking 4 minute ice water showers twice daily or at least once a day for 2 years , it is guarnteed to work and makes you slim and smart along the way.
