Andrew absolutely KILLED the role, after watching the film I completely forgot that Andrew Garfield was in it. Props to him for dedicating so much for the role
Yes, he was awesome. He even had a Southern American accent, I didn’t know that he’s Australian! As an American, I don’t know if our accent is hard or easy to duplicate!! Andrew said, Private Doss didn’t set out to be great, but like Dr King said, we all have the potential to be great, because all of us have the ability to serve, which makes greatness!❤❤
I loved Hacksaw Ridge. The combat scenes were brutal to watch. I see so much of Jesus in Desmond Doss. I loved Andrew Garfield as Desmond Doss. He should have won the Academy Award for best actor.
The way he walks into the artillery fire when God calls him. Like Jesus standing up in the garden of Gethsemane, and walking straight toward the Cross.
i really left the cinema thinking how important is that when you stay true to yourself and decide to be the best version of yourself :) thanks for this !
Agreed, I have a spiritual man-crush on Andrew thanks to his performance. I completely engulfed me in sympathy and connection. He deserves so much praise, as well as the historical figure he personified.
I just had the privilege of seeing this movie and I found it so moving and astounding. Mel, you are brilliant! The whole cast was great also. It's a must see!!
My wife and I had the honor of meeting Desmond Doss in the early to mid 1980's in CT when he came to testify of his experiences in WWII. It would be an understatement to say he was a humble, modest man. He was the kindest, most honorable man I ever had the privilege to speak with. God was most certainly with him. The book was far better than the movie but the movie, though toned down, was well done. My guess is, Mel Gibson had to dial it back as to seem more believable. Amazing story, amazing man, amazing God who shielded and guided him.
The movie was amazing! Andrew, Mel and the screenwriters all deserve at least academy award nominations for this movie, it's incredible. It brings all the feels.
A lot of real life actions of Desmond Doss wasn't included in the movie. The real Desmond deliberately stepped on a grenade to save a soldier, blasting shrapnel up his leg. Injured and on a stretcher, when seeing a wounded soldier he rolled off the stretcher, administered first aid to the soldier, and gave the injured soldier his own stretcher. He crawled back to safety over a few hundred yards, all the while being shot full of holes. He was awarded the Medal of Honor but rejected the medal as he believed it was awarding and honoring war. Mel Gibson omitted all of this from the film, as he felt the audience would never believe it.
Desmond Doss inspired me become a US navy Corman so for 4 years I was a combat corpsman. After 5 tour's in Afghanistan and Iraq and got blown up was finally sent home
Desmond should have run for president he has all the qualities a perfect human should be. If the whole world was like him it would be the perfect planet.
Unfortunately this is precisely why he never would have been elected president. You cannot be president if you are moral. Even John F. Kennedy, perhaps the most moral of all American presidents, but certainly not perfect, was assassinated.
@@pacifichistorianDesmond , era um servo de Jesus , nascido de novo conforme as Escrituras Sagrada . O Espírito Santo , de Deus , agiu por meio dele pela fé inabalável que Doss tinha . ❤
Desmond Doss was a truly humble and beautiful, physically beautiful, man. Andrew Garfield did an excellent job of portraying him. Andrew just can't come out and say it, that what made Desmond Doss so great was his faith in the God of Christ. Mel did an excellent job directing this movie. One of the greatest movies of all time.
Desmond Doss was great because of his incredibly selfless, many sacrifices to help people. He had incredible perseverance to accomplish that. His motivation may have been based in religion, but it is his own choices that made him great. Doesn't matter whether you're Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, atheist- whatever, we all can achieve that if we choose to believe in empathy and love, and choose to uphold our values with all our life.
Mel Gibson is best of the best. His movies hit you hard like boomerang. From Passion of Christ to Apocalypto to this. Amazing stuff. These three movies will one day find themselves at the Library of Congress
Because he hates Hollywood and the industry and they tried to destroy his life over a few words. Plus he was the one who imitated the Harvey Weinstein getting rolled
Amazing movie. Mel did such a great job! Same with Andrew!! These guys captured the reality of a person who lived with a true conviction in his heart and how he saw the value of life. If everyone were that selfless.. wow.. then the world would definitely be a better place!! What an example man! Sadly too many people choose to focus on there needs rather than others. Anyways great job again on the movie :}
No matter what perter parker saves the day again. Desmond doss was a legend❤️ man imagine how many deaths are in that war💔 Andrew Garfield deserves Oscar in this role. His performance were phenomenal 🔥
When I was a boy, my mother told me what Albert Einstein said about Mohandas Gandhi: “Generations to come will scarce believe that such an one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.” Although my mother was the daughter of U.S. citizens when she was born in Canada, she used the correct word “an” before the word “one” (because it began with a vowel). Maybe that was why I filed the quote away in my memory banks as having been said by Sir Winston Churchill. Be that as it may, the same could be said of Desmond Doss. When he was asked to speak at my school in the ‘60s, Mr. Doss was so shy the only way he would stand before an audience was to be interviewed. Only in the format of answering questions was he willing to talk about his experiences. I might add that generations of movie directors to come will scarce believe that such a movie director as Mel Gibson ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth. For such a talented director to tell - in film form - one of the most powerful true stories of the last 100 years results in a movie that will long be considered one of the most powerful movies of all time.

Only a devote Christian like Mel would make this movie. None of the other heathens in Hollywood would give it a glance.
Mel's really uncomfortable in interviews.... it's so obvious. He's jittery and his mind is racing. . but i can't help but love the guy/
