Hey everyone! Thanks for all the awesome comments, though I’m surprised not to see more on a particular moment in the video. But hey, Classy Tech gave me a heads up you CAN check the info on an HDMI input by: hitting the menu button on the top right of the remote, scroll all the way to the right for the HDMI info menu. Thanks, Classy! Also, older Sony TV remotes have a TV button that will give ya some info, too. And then you can always spam the LG green button. Cheers, everyone!
Hi Caleb are you ok?
I’m sure an Apple TV 3D is on the way 😁
Rumors of your demise have been greatly exaggerated.
Caleb might be suffering from a tech overload after CES and is slowly coming down.
Not seeing that on my menu settings but there is a 'display' button on the bottom right of newer remotes that gives you HDR info. Please tell Sony to copy LG and make this easy to access.
There’s nothing like big speaker systems to give you the theater experience. Good quality speakers last decades. You can use separate amps, and only upgrade the processor. I’m still old school 5.1 via receiver and large speakers all around. My center is a huge speaker matching left and right. Fronts are 10” single point source, rears are 8” sps. 35+ year old Radian Engineering speakers. Simply build to suit your environment. I don’t think the majority of people have heard high quality audio, and thus miss out on the overall experience. Even though I haven’t upgraded to more speakers, people are always wowed by my simple 5.1 setup because they’re used to TV speakers only. It’s a big difference.
At least on Sony's Android 12 based sets like the A95L, you can access information about the incoming signal by pressing the MENU key then scrolling to the right on the menu that pops up and press the option "Detailed signal info".
That brings up a fairly detailed display about what's coming in from the selected input.
I agree with everything you just mentioned about Apple Vision Pro and a home theater. With that said, the AVP will be the home theater for people who don’t have the space or live in multi family units where sound travels.
I'd like the best of both worlds, AVP for the video and still get to use your home theatre speakers for the audio
@@76moteroI wonder how it can be achieved, maybe using AirPlay from AVP to AVR?
@@gammaknife9933 yes I heard the apple Devs are exploring that option
@@76motero I am convinced that will be doable. You can use bluetooth to connect your headphones, so I'm sure you can just connect it to your speakers as well.
@@joelface Agreed. The AVP is a computer and you can use bluetooth to hook up whatever you want to it.
On all Sony TV’s if you hit the information button[i] whilst watching Netflix, it will provide the current resolution and bandwidth being used 👍🏾
It's labeled "1 2 3" on my remote (Sony A80K), but it works! Thank you, Sir! I started paying EweTubeTV $5 extra a month for 4K, but I'm not sure I've seen any 4K broadcasts yet (will be checking the two NFL playoff games today)
The assumption that everyone watches tv with friends and family keeps coming up and it’s flat out wrong. I enjoy tv best when watching alone, so do many other people. For some people like myself, the Vision Pro will easily replace a tv as the primary source for shows and movies.
I agree 1000%. I’m usually the only person who cares about the quality of the television or space for it anyway….
The ability to be able to throw on some noise canceling headphones and disappear into ANYWHERE in your own house is amazing. No matter the size of your place you can create a screen as big as you want…
For me what it means is that I buy an Apple Vision Pro for me and a base level OLED for watching TV with friends and family.
Great episode - enjoyed all the topics.
I think we need more than a moment of silence for the harmony remotes. I’ve been bugging them to make the 700 and a premium again. Please make them again.
Hey Caleb, great question from John. Remember seeing some DVD players in the day would show "Extra Info", Encoding bit-rate, colour mode e.t.c in real-time as an overlayed graphic. Not for the average user but was jealous of equipment that could display this real-time info. Wish this was available now on modern tv's and players as to know what signal process and stream is showing to the user.
The Yio Remote was renamed to Unfolded Circle Remote, and is way past the kickstarter phase already. I have two of them and they’re fantastic, if a bit buggy still. The software is constantly improving basically weekly and I vastly prefer it over my older harmony remotes already.
Love this series and catch it every week. Thank you!
On my Sony (A95L), it’s either the cogwheel/wrench button (backlit remote) or the MENU button (basic remote) then scroll to detailed signal info (all the way to the right). This will show you the picture and sound that you’re currently outputting.
Nothing beats a custom home cinema system - I promise you. If you have the room and money, it's second to none having a custom surround system with a mid to high end AVR.
Absolutely! I’ve done systems on my last two homes, and my family is addicted. A large 4K display (panel or projector) with a quality speaker / amp / processor setup is mesmerizing. Nice thing is you can keep quality speakers and amps forever, and update the processor as standards change. I’ve got a 7 channel McIntosh amp and a full set of B&W speakers, and they are worth every penny to us.
lol. This can beat that esp having IMAX3D at your home. and experience of UI
@@993mikeprojectors reduces quality of pictures by a lot even the highest end.
try it before you talk
You’ve tried both?
There’s the oddball “mash the green button 7 times” on LG OLEDs which shows you detailed VRR info, which includes a bunch of details on the current display stream. I think this only works for HDMI inputs. I used it to figure out what chroma subsampling format was in use when hooking up my PC.
Another awesome episode and very informative. Excellent job Caleb, keep it up! I look forward to these videos every time.
Caleb.... for your first question I don't know about the X90L, but I have a A95K and the 123 button should give him that info. OMG the Playa Haters Ball ref had me 😂.
Press the “TV” button on the remote you showed and it displays the resolution, screen ratio (16:9 for instance), HDR/Dolby Vision, and the audio signal. At least while using my Roku Ultra this is the case.
I have a Sony A95L. With the A95L, you are able to get input signal information by pressing the button on the Sony remote, scrolling through the options to the end where you will find the option.
If the option is not present in the row of options presented when you press the button, scroll all the way to the end of the menu list, tap and then ensure that you highlight the option to add it to the list of quick access options that appear when you press the button on your remote.
If the X90L menu system is the same as the A95L menu system, you should then be good to go.
I went through the same issue getting Atmos music to play on my system and ended up getting an Apple TV 4k. Atmos music works now, but as a side benefit I also accidently stumbled onto the best streaming device I've ever owned. It gets 90% of our screen time now.
Same here. Bought an ATV 4K nearly 2 years ago because it's the only option for home theater Atmos from Apple Music (I actually started with them on Android). Now that I've cut the cable & switched to fiber + TH-cam TV it turns out to be the best streamer for that platform, beating even my Hisense U8K.
I have a Sony A80J. I believe this was he last gen to have the longer remote vs the shorter one. When it comes to using any of the internal apps you won't be able to find out any specific pic info when hitting the gear/setting button which is on the bottom right for me. There will still be clues to find out if you're in HDR or DV by the picture setting profile name. It won't tell you resolution though. Now when you are using an HMDI source hitting the gear/setting button will show you all the info that you will need like resolution and HDR status.
Based on this video it seems like the newer Sony TVs opted for the gear/setting button to take you to the picture settings instead. If this is the case then that's a shame. When it comes down to it if it really bothers you then I think it's best to just purchase the older longer remote instead. I've always been a fan of these bigger remote as it has more buttons. I like having the num pad to put in my passcodes and stuff.
Thanks, this post was helpful.🔥🔥
Love this segment…thanks! I have the Sony a90j which does not tell you on screen if it’s Dolby vision, etc. My LG G3 does let me know if I’m getting DV, HDR, and Dolby Atmos. Plus my Sennheiser Ambeo Plus lights up on top if I’m receiving Dolby Atmos! BTW it sounds amazing! I agree about the Apple Vision Pro. At least with 3-D TVs you still had interaction with your friends sitting on the couch. I would love a 3-D experience without glasses. The G3 does have a nice 3-D look on certain content.
Best post-video blooper yet. Got to experience it loud and clear through my cans.
My Hisense (U8K I think) shows the Resolution and FPS when switching inputs. Plus the picture settings will show when it is in HDR.
As allways great video i really enjoyed it keep it up the great work 👏🤩
For the company for which I work in Italy over time we have decreased the amount of video sources and for two years now we have only mounted LG TVs together with Denon Marantz amplifiers, now the latest generation TVs integrate all video streaming apps and no one uses Blu-Ray anymore, as a result we have also stopped installing Logitech remote controls. The HDMI CEC protocol combined with the ARC/eARC has greatly simplified the installation and currently the enjoyment of a Home Theater can take place in complete peace of mind with only the remote control of the TV
I had a Logitec remote. It was often missing turning on and off all the components at the same time. So it needed to be recalibrated on a regular bassis.
I’ve been using the brand Universal Remote for years with great results. Have two MX-990’s in our house now, and they’re fully programmable with both IR and RF compatibility. Not cheap, but good, and available on Amazon.
On the Sony x90l if you press the menu button on the remote it will show you what resolution you are getting into the tv from an external source.
Pretty sure you can tell if you are running in hdr you'll feel it even when you open just settings or quick settings as the background color(of menu ofc) will be different than if you were in sdr.
&you can tell resolution if you use vlc & go to video information. It shows you current bit rate & you can confirm using that bitrate.
On LG models there’s an option to display Resolution and sound information from signal. On the magic remote press the “…”(3 dots button) then scroll down to INFO and press enter. You should see bottom left info on HMDI resolution and Audio.
Caleb, I think you sort of misunderstood what Dolby was doing when the put the Dolby Atmos label on the TVs that they did (that only have stereo speakers). That wasn't to convey that the TV would present audio in Dolby Atmos from just the two, built-in stereo speakers, it was meant to indicate that the TV could handle a Dolby Atmos-enabled source signal and pass it through to an actual Dolby Atmost enabled device like an advanced soundbar or AV receiver once THAT was connected to the TV.
I think the onus is really on Dolby and the TV company to make that clear.
@@joelfaceabsolutely, no question about it. I think a lot of things are done in the tech space today that are more motivated by marketing/promotion than they are technical accuracy. This could clearly be counted as one of them, but there are countless others out there as well, for sure.
I still have a Jensen Universal 3 remote from the early 2000's with a learning function, but it's only for IR devices, not RF or bluetooth.
Regarding Universal Remotes:
In my system involving an LG C2, several streamers, a Panasonic Blu-Ray player, a TiVo Bolt, and a Denon AVR, the only devices that seem to have issues with CEC control are the Blu-Ray player and the Denon AVR. In particular, the AVR will pick the wrong input about 10%-20% of the time. I fix this via source selection on either the TV or the AVR, but it sometimes takes a few attempts to stick.
Instead of a universal control remote, I have a folder on my iPhone counting Remote apps for almost all my devices. This allows me to control all devices without the actual remotes.
Love this format! Caleb is always super clear and elegan.. Ok, I saw the end. 😂
Lg can also show you details of the picture and sound formats with the magic remote. While playing the content, use the pointer and click upper left and the input will display. Click again on this input and the LG will show all the details of the signal!
Or fastly press the green button if using an input.
@@jeffkardosjr.3825I pressed the green button and it changed the audio mode on my Onkyo receiver, which was cool but not what I expected.
Waving the magic remote and clicking on the input did pull up the info details, though.
An even better example about Dolby Atmos being watered down is that it is in phones. Just found your page/videos and I LOVE your content and passion Caleb!
After getting sick of juggling like 5 remotes, I ended up with the Sofabaton U2 and absolutely love it. Build quality is unexceptional, but it has worked wonderfully and (more importantly) reliably for me. And it’s cheap. Great solution if you’re in need of one, IMO.
Another reason I heard Logitech canceled the Harmony division was due to the number of customer service calls related to individuals who were less tech inclined and used other remotes causing their Harmony to fall out of sync. I never really considered this until I implemented Harmony remotes at a family vacation home and my sibling's families all struggled with the remotes. I had to take them all away and hide them for them to get accustomed to using 1 remote. They still struggle as they don't realize they need to hold the remote for a period of time at the devices to start the activity.
Great vid, as usual. Totally agree with you about the Dolby Atmos badge being everywhere! I sincerely feel Dolby can do better than that.
The other problem with the Apple Vision Pro is that it can only ever be streaming content, so it would never be as good as watching a film on a 4K disc through a 4K player, etc. i’d also have big question marks about the sound, which would presumably never be able to compete with a actual home theatre set up.
I am sure some developers are working on apps that connect 4K disk players (like Xbox Series X or PS5) to Vision Pro. Since all devices are within the same home WiFi, video quality shouldn’t be compromised.
The AVP is literally a computer. What's stopping you from downloading movies in 4k?
Great You Asked episode!
If you're trying to find the data stream info if your tv is android based then there is a way to access the developer options by going to the about settings tab and selecting build 6 times you should see the notification that you have become a developer come up after the 6th time.
How do you pull that info up while watching movies or TV?
@@HussainRahim stop watching tv to go into the settings menu for the android OP
That was a funny little blooper at the end in case anybody didn't make it all the way to the end. It was really funny. Well worth it. The other thing I think with the Apple VR really is price. What is it of four $5,000 price tag? I don't think it's going to sell too well in my opinion. That's a lot of money for some VR glasses, even though I would love to see what the 3D looks like since I missed 3D and I want it back in our damn televisions but it's never going to happen anyways. Great video!..
I still use my harmony remote and it’s just fine. It may have lost support, but I use it every day.
It hasn't lost support. They are still updating the database with new devices. They said they will continue to update it as long as people are using it.
I still use my harmony remotes as well and love them.
You’ll find resolution info and format info if you press the green button 7 times on a few of the LG tv’s.
Why this can't replace my theater room:
1 - Shared experience with my family (Maybe in the future all of us will be wearing these in a linked experience, but for now... nah.)
2 - Bass. That very real pressure sensation of your body vibrating from the room shaking just isn't going to be recreated by ANY sort of headphone.
Loved the wink at the end lol!!! 😂
@Caleb_Denison - re: Apple Vision Pro - does it allow audio out to non apple headphones? w/o option for a subwoofer - it can't replace a home theater (even for an individual)
At some point you can just have 2 people wear an AVP an watch a shared digital screen together. So not sure if your "never" means for this iteration of the software/hardware. Otherwise you are just wrong.
I love all these episodes. Folks have such good questions.
Loved the Chappell show insert in this video.
Wait I have a Sony Bravia Oled Tv and if you press the info button on the remote it will showing the resolution aspect ratio and hdr or DV info. If it says 4k and doesn't mention hdr or dv then the source is not in hdr or dolby vision. Hope this is more of a help than the answer in the video, because that answer sounded more like I didn't bother looking it up. 1:54
The Tidal app on my google tv plays the music in Atmos I was listening to it on my TCL Q6 and I heard all the Atmos music I could
On Sony tvs when you press the menu button on the remote is shows you the format. Example, My cable box connects at 4K 30 and it clearly shows that.
Have a Yio now called “Remote Two” by Unfolded Circle. After owning Pronto and Harmony I need to understand their GUI logic. It’s a beautiful piece of hardware but a small ready to go library of codes for the consumer for now. It is growing and the community is vibrant.
I love my TV paired with my HomePod Mini. Not only am I heavily invested in the ecosystem, but my mother used every type of smart TV (except ones equipped with Amazon) and I hated them all, she ended up with a Roku TV
My old Sony 4K TV 900F that was made in 2018 all I would do is hit the display button and it will show 3840x2160p but my new TCL Q6 it just pops up showing me what’s being displayed or I can just hit the i info button and it shows me the resolution.
I just bought a Samsung S95C 77". Love the TV, HAAATE the remote since there is no input switching button(s). Unfortunately, there don't seem to be any third-party remotes that work with this TV.
Apple TV can show Playback HUD if you unlock the developer menu using Xcode on Mac.
I love you for that Chappelle reference ❤
I am looking for a tv stand/cabinet that has lots of airflow, but I don't see all those damn blue lights. I have a 65" tv, I am going to go larger, but will wall mount the larger tv. Hoping to get either 77" LG or 100" Hence.
On Hisense all that info shows when you power it up... still gotta try with the remote 😂
on my LG B2 if you press the green button 7 times it will show the exact screen he's looking for
Will you be reviewing the TCL 98" (98S550G) and compare it to the Hisense 100" (100U76N) since they are going for the almost exact same price $1,999.99. I was leaning toward the TCL 85" QM8 for around $1750.00 but then the bigger ones came out and the prices dropped to my price range. I'm guessing the Hisense is the best choice here for features and size.
7:45 Caleb, after years of listening to them, talk about this I tried to order it on my iPad Pro, and the screen wouldn’t flip over when it asked to put it in portrait mode to scan your face. I said heck with it and was reminded about the screen lock when I said something on Reddit. I think it’s funny that they forgot to check their own software and make sure it would allow customers to make the order because it could’ve either warned me or flip the screen by itself. Why should I have to remember every setting that I don’t normally use? I’m not even sure how it got locked and it doesn’t really matter. The fact that part of the applications allow the screen rotate anyway means I had no real clue. It was locked from my normal use. Anyway, when that didn’t happen, I ended up ordering a Nakamichi dragon sound bar, which I’m now listening to and happy with. The headset is not going to beat the sound bar under any condition. I like Apple stuff or I wouldn’t own it but they let me down so now I have to make them pay by cutting subscriptions and not buying anything for a generation. I had just bought an M1 MacBook Air and iPod pros getting ready for this so they’re gonna have to pay a price for letting me down.
Make sure to watch our full episode on the Vision Pro to see if Caleb changed his mind: th-cam.com/video/G0X6ZorIk_w/w-d-xo.html
Some LG TVs will let you mash one of the color buttons to get picture information. Red I think, don’t do it often, might be one of the other ones.
I have a SonyX90J and I have been looking to see if it’s actually playing 4K or not - it drove me crazy that I couldn’t find it… thanks!
Try the ‘Display’ button on the bottom right corner. Works on my A80J but looks like the newer Sony remotes have fewer buttons.
This is not related, but I need help I've a ps5 with a hdmi 2.1 cable my pc monitor 165 hz only has 2.0 but supports hdr when trying to connect them both ie turn hdr on both devices it says not supported on either the ps5 or monitor, is there away to get it to work the hdr, im just interested in seeing if it would work, thanks
For Sony if you put it in game mode, it'll tell you resolution and SDR/HDR when you press the menu button in the bottom left corner
WOW Caleb, this was great Sir! DO a video with FOMO and knock our socks off!
Totally agree with that last point! Absolutely weakens the wow or exclusive feature of Dolby Atmos.
11:05 I love the LG implementation, where its remote can control:
a. The LG TV itself, via Bluetooth;
b. My Edifier speakers, via Infrared (IR);
c. My ISP's set-top-box, via IR.
Moreover, through HDMI-CEC, I am able to control the Fire TV Cube - alltough I admit I prefer using the original Fire TV remote, due to lag in the HDMI-CEC.
To be honest, I think Logitech exited the Universal Remote market due to:
1. Increase in Bluetooth remotes, both in TVs, but especially on set-top-boxes;
2. Decrease in sales, due to many IR blasters hitting the market, e.g., Boradlink;
3. Integration fees, in many ecosystems.
This limits the quality support Logitech has provided the market.
IKR so much is frustrating
When playing over HDMI inputs, Sony TVs like my 77A80K have the information display you desire when pressing the "123" button on the remote.
Do you mean a “gear” icon - for “settings” as opposed to a “wrench” icon - which I’ve never seen on a TV menu?
Regarding universal remotes: I have been using HDMI-CEC for over a decade now in my opinion superior to universal remotes because you only have to aim at one device (the TV) or you can use the comfort of a bluetooth remote like the Apple TV one
@Caleb_Denison - approx when do you think you'll post the Apple Vision Pro as HT video? TIA
What about the 123 button? That shows resolution of hdmi input and hdr or not.
Caleb, I don't know if I would say "never" in regards to a device like Apple Vision Pro replacing a home theater. I say this because even the first Gen device provides unparalleled pass threw viewing. And impressions of the device sound like screen pinning truly locks that "display" in your 3D space. So you don't need to be cut off from the world in order to watch a large screen in your living space, while also seeing the world and people around you.
The other is that as these devices become cheaper and more common place, I would imagine they will be adopted on the level of SmartPhones and Tablets. So multiple people could theoretically just sit in on the same content.
Think of the Vision Pro as a high-end pair of audiophile headphones. Sure, it’s for one person. But that trade off means you can offer an incredibly great experience. The name of the game imo is information density and preservation of artistic intent. Nothing else comes close to
Anyone recommend a replacement remote for Toshiba FireTV?
12:00 My old plasma has Dolby Digital.
Watching from Accra Ghana
On LG you click the green block of the 4 color blocks at the bottom of the remote like 7 times and you will get resolution and refresh rate
YIO remote is now called Unfolded Circle
I’m excited for the Vision Pro. I think with gen 2/future versions it could bring back 3D in a big way.
I totally agree with this!
Merci!
I think the main reason we're losing all the smart remotes it due to the flexibility of Bluetooth on iPhone with apps for just about everything. The phone is already sitting right there and is fully configurable
I know it’s not your style Caleb, but I would love to hear you talk in podcast form
From what I read, Apple Vision Pro can be connected to multiple for you to watch the same thing at the same time making it more than just a one person use
The flaw I see in phrases like “the future of…” or “the next…” or “…killer” is that they can be interpreted so many ways. The title of this video asks if Apple Vision Pro is “the future of home theater” then answers “No, it’s not going to REPLACE it”.
Tech often supplements and accumulates rather than replacing or “killing” other products outright. I agree that for the foreseeable future, people will want some kind of big screen viewable by everyone in the room without individual equipment. But for some people some of the time, a high fidelity headset might do the trick. I have a nice projector and sound system but I also just got a new neighbor downstairs 😅 so I’d enjoy a private headset.
And of course there are also experiences like 3D movies, Immersive Videos, and home spatial videos enjoyed in a virtual environment that are not possible with current home theater tech. You can also bring your virtual home theater with you wherever you go.
So I think compelling, brand new experiences will make Apple Vision Pro part of the equation.
I have an XR-65A80CL and the remote has a “menu” button that’s has a screen that pops up and reveals the source the input, the resolution, the aspect ratio, and the format. I’m currently using an AppleTV on that port so it shows:
AppleTV 4K | HDMI 3(eARC/ARC)
3840 x 2160p 4K 16:9 Dolby Vison
Part of my complaints with the Google ownership of the Sony TV is that the experience is not consistent so when I’m using the internal sources the same button doesn’t provide anything even close to the same information. I really hope Sony decides to release an optional firmware that allows us to abandon Google but I’m doubtful it’ll happen as I’m sure there is a gob of money being made by both companies.
Quick question, is the Hisense 55U8K for $810 a good deal?
Headphone will never be as good as speakers. I'm running a Blu-Ray player hooked up to a sound bar and it sounds awesome! Almost like bringing the theater home with me.
Can you even plug in a Blu-ray player to an Apple Vision? Or is it digital content only?
Highly doubt it. Maybe someone will make an adapter of some kind in the future allowing this to be possible.
@Caleb_Denison - Will Apple Vision Pro have HDR (you mentioned, just want to confirm)?
Who I think would make a good universal TV remote would be elgato. One thing I hate about TV remotes is the premade subscription buttons on remotes. If elgato implemented the same tech they use for their stream deck and have customizable buttons, that would be *chef's kiss*
As a consumer, I would love that. However, the subscription buttons on Roku and Firestick remotes are paid for by the app companies, so it may make it more expensive to make remotes without that side money.
I did get a Sofabaton U1 and it's OK. Bluetooth controls work a little too slowly but it's nice to be able to have it set to the TV and be able to control the firestick through the CEC. I know there's also an app on my phone that could do that but then you have to stop using your phone. It does have macros that can be programmed to the 4 color buttons. I've used a couple just to pull up certain inputs on my receiver. I paid $55 for it, so I wasn't expecting it to be perfect.
I am definitely an AppleTV diehard but it seems with the recent UI changes, they’re preparing to drop it and rely on the TV app on other people’s hardware
Actually, the Sofabaton U2 and X1 are Harmoney contendors. I do not know how you missed those.
