Update: A couple of things have come to light, firstly it seems a bug on the last island is literally STOPPING completion. Secondly, when the DLC comes out it will kill your current saves. I am such a fan of the KOTOR series that even with the bugs, crashes, and frame drops, there is no way I'm not getting this game. Probably my favorite series of all time.
Honestly, for a game that's what, 18 years old? It looks surprisingly great. And I mean sure it doesn't compare with modern games visually, but it has an art style and overall aesthetic qualities that still look good to me to this day. Maybe I'm weird

It's nuts to me that at one point in time the graphics of this game were mouth watering! It's crazy how far graphics and animations have come since the early 2004's. How lucky are we!
KoTOR2 looked aged even when it first released. The first one was pretty good looking at the time, but the second didn't improve on its graphics at all and in many places went backwards like for example the character texturing was way sloppier in the second game.
I dumped so many hours of my life into this game in high school. So excited to see what the cut content is all about. Currently downloading this gem right now!
I played a good chunk of the mod being used in the upcoming update. If they're going to implement the entirety of the cut content, you can expect an extra 3-5 hours of content as well as a majority of dialogue trees getting more content. The end of the game gets more context even if it's still abrupt.
Shame they didn't add the restored content in this release, which included an excruciating section where you explored a droid-only planet. Great idea in theory, but after 5 minutes running around a set of identical grey plazas and avenues you understand why they removed it in the first place. 😂
Another great review, sounds like it needs a decent patch ... and we need to know more about this free end-game content. So far I've not bought a single Aspyr Star Wars release on my Switch, basically because I already own most of the titles and it takes something special for me to double-dip. I'd be tempted to pick-up both KOTOR games, but it seems I'm now waiting for both games to be properly covered in an All Patched Up video. Hopefully it all comes together sooner rather than later.

That visual black texture bug is related to the lack of actual pause when going to sleep. The first one also does that and the in-game time counter shows that I played it for like 200 hours.
I saw online that once the restored content DLC is released, existing save files WON'T be compatible and you'd have to start over with a new character. So that's a bummer. I'll wait for the DLC to come out before picking this one up, it's on my wishlist for sure. Great review guys!
I'm 12 years old and I started playing kotor in 2020. I fell in love with the game I started playing kotor 2 but on onderon I had some issues that made me restart my entire progress so I'm gonna wait till they fix there bugs. Can't wait to beat the game on Nintendo once they get everything sorted out.
I only ever played KotOR 2 on the original Xbox. Could never find a copy for the first game. So I'm glad the 1st game came out on switch. I do remember KotOR 2's force storm being absolutely broken.
This was a big question for me. I bought kotor2 on pc a long time ago, but then had it ruined for me when a clip did the rounds of the end battle. It just killed the game. But it’s one I always wish I had gone back to. 30 for both 1 and 2 seem great ESPECIALLY knowing that they will be actively working on making 2 better (seemingly fixing the issues I had with it years ago). Father’s Day is around the corner, I may celebrate myself then by picking the 2 pack. Cheers guys, TENTACULAR!
I hope Aspyr patches this one quickly. There are a ton of audio and visual bugs which detract from the experience. At least frame rate is decent. I had a few crashes in one specific scripted sequence, which makes me think the scripting in the port is kinda jank too. The backgrounds are weird as well.
Definitely needs a patch. Some dialogue early on gets skipped or goes silent. I really hope it doesn't last through the whole game. I've played the series a dozen times back during the Xbox days, so it's not a big deal to me, but it might confuse new players.

I'm happy to seems they fixed some of the game breaking bugs. I was trying to replay on my Xbox a couple months ago and hit a bug where the next story quest would not trigger. I'm going to go through this now with a Light Side Guardian and then once the Restored Content comes out....Sith Lord it is!
Can't wait to get this once I'm done with the first one again. I had the same sort of issue with resuming after a while on that as well, the grass went insane on Dantooine but the same fix worked there.
I"m a big fan of the series, and of course will get this version as well. I have to say that 3 crashes in 20 hours is great! I have the PC version, and was playing it just a few years ago. That game crashed on me about 4 times every couple of hours. And a couple of times my saved progress seemed to disappear. THAT was infuriating! 🤬 I never was able to finish the game because of these issues. Now I plan to replay the first KOTOR and finally finish KOTOR 2! Thanks again for another great review...although this was an easy sale for me! 🤣

The texture issues awakening the Switch from Sleep Mode are present in KOTOR 1 as well, but hardly a deal breaker. A quick reload or region transition usually fixes it. I am sad that it has technical issues, but it seems to me it could be issues caused by the game being prepped for the DLC. Trying to load assets or dialogue not currently enabled? Either way, I'm sure it'll be patched up fairly swiftly. I'm still working through KOTOR 1 so I can wait to start this anyway.
Looks good for an ancient game, even for Switch. *Update: It's good, real good. It's strange how they shoehorned in turn-based RPG aspects but for whatever reason it seems to work.*
you can level to 50 very early to make the game harder like every mob can one shot you and you hit farly weak to them as the game dont let you out level the game
Sounds like for my first experience of it I’ll be better off waiting for the restored content mod to come out then…. Wonder if they’ll put a cheat menu in similar to KOTOR as well, replaying that on the Switch was quite fun with the odd extra feat, power, or a decent lightsaber as soon as possible!
The restored content really gives it those finishing touches the vanilla version lacks, it's all really faithfully done and there is IMO no reason to play the game without it, even for the first time. Hell, I would love to be able to wipe all my memories of all the times I've played through this game and play it again for the first time with the restored content there. There is one part near the end that I can see was removed for a good reason, but other than that it's all 10/10.
It would be nice if they made a kotor 3 but instead of beating the sith then joining them [if your dark side] you join the sith from the beginning and do sith training and fight the jedi and become a sith lord same with the jedi just light side
Even with kotor2's botched ending, I've always preferred it. I love it's gritty, dark interpretation of star wars and I find it adds a lot of nauce and understanding to what the star wars galaxy is. Also, there are way more build options and chances for role playing than the first game. Pumped for console plebs to finally experience the restored content.
Happy to see this! Don't get paid till Friday so I was wondering if it was worth a grab or not (Played the hell out of this game back on the XBOX and forgot about it for a time when I finally got a Laptop that could play the game so I can enjoy the "removed content!" only thinking of it again when they released the first KOTOR on Switch and wondered if this one would get a release as well! And Happy to see it "warts and all" and at a reasonable price too.) The crashing is a fact of life I guess, but hey even back then on the XBOX, I was paranoid of blackouts where I lived then, they happened, but not often! More like "three or four years in between each other! But when they happen, they HURT as last time, I didn't save for a long while and it was not to far from an auto-save, then "blackout, all my progress was gone!" So lets just say, games with a Quick Save button were fun because it saved me seconds of saving every two minutes! (Guess I'll save after every fight just in case! But it's not something I haven't done already! Seriously some games should drop the "save point" stuff and allow a back-up save for this case! I hate a run ending because of a game error) Now I hope they fix those crashes and that "blackening" issue soon. And I have to ask, has the Free DLC with the Removed Content been released with this and if not, when will it be! (Like to know, as I really don't want to start a new game unless I'm playing it, it's the one major reason this version caught my attention and not trying to find one to work on my laptop was to play that content! As I did say I played the hell out of this back on XBOX. I love KOTOR 1, but KOTOR 2 was to me, as Fallout New Vegas was to Fallout 3! I liked KOTOR1/Fallout 3, But I enjoyed AND loved KOTOR2/Fallout NV more! Ironic knowing who made those sequels and all!) Also hope the Dark Alliance 2 works well and is properly PRIZED compared to what they did with the first game (otherwise I'm using Gold Coins! KOTOR 2 and Dark Alliance 2 were my games back on XBOX! But since they're not adding new shit, they shouldn't be pricing it as the did Dark Alliance 1! I had to gather ALOT of gold coins from other purchases to lower Dark Alliance 1 to the Price it SHOULD have been marketed as! and I guess I'll have to do that for Dark Alliance 2 if they don't heed my advice!)
I own this game on everything it has been released on. And I’ve never experienced more game crashes (on any game actually) like I have with KOTOR 2 on the Switch. Like probably almost 10 times in 3 days? Absurd lol. ETA: the cut scene aspect ratio is never consistent.. and the audio mix is horrid. But I still can’t help but keep playing. I love this game so much. Hopefully a update will fix these issues.
That black texture thing was happening to me recently on the first KOTOR. I also noticed if my switch went into sleep mode this did not suspend the game. So by the time i was done the game said i clocked over 100 hours of game play.
Anyone else have words cut off during character creating when not using all your skills? "You have not spent blah blah , saved for next level" last 3 letter on the right side are cutoff each line
Game needs a patch asap. Can’t get back to Onderon after clearing out the sith tomb on Dxun now I’m stuck. Every time the cutscene finishes when reentering Onderon the game crashes. Even if I go back to a previous save and work my way back up crashes at the same point over and over.
Honestly from I remember the blacked textures and random crashes were always kinda *there*, especially the crashes, I ever almost losing a save or two on the Xbox. Sounds like an altogether competent port that just needs some cleaning up. So glad to see my favorite game on the switch, and arguably the most accessible version of it too
I agree about the black textures. I remember having the black textures with the KOTOR 1 and 2 on PC back in 2003-2005 as well on the original xbox when I replayed it about 3 years ago.
I never got to play this one, I know all the lore. But only finished the first game, so this is super exciting for me. Darth Nihilus is my favorite sith and I just can’t wait to play this. Had to get rid of a frickin ton of other games to play this. I’ll have to re download later. But big whoop! I’m playing a ton of pac man and hot wheels lately and I can definitely still play those if I get burnt out on kotor…. All new to me, scared of how much time I’ll play this actually. ❤❤❤❤😊
That shadow bug when you wake your Switch is in Aspyrs KOTOR port too - you would really have hoped they'd fix it before releasing the second game, but here we are.
I used to call this 'The Glitch Lords' back when i played it on X box so hopefully it is at least better than that. Oddly enough the other bugs you report, especially the all characters going black one happened on the first one when i played it on Switch recently and i lost plenty of playtime to crashes then too. It's DL now so i guess i'll find out soon if this is still 'The Glitch Lords'!
@@SwitchUpYt I remember this glitch on a boss fight where I couldn't move. Could use all force powers and everything, but couldn't move at all. That was a reload situation, a good way through the game too. Proper looking forward to the DLC!
obsidian actually helped development of the first kotor. Uncredited. In fact they shared around 50 different contract staff members n 100 full time employees with Bioware, at the time. This was revealed through various interviews in 2010.
It is 100% confirmed a member of aspyr stated in an email its the full restoration mod and further more the original modders will be credited in the end credits
Loved the kotor port but will wait for that update dlc to arrive before picking this up. Have never played it but my friends say it’s better with that content
Honestly I'm excited because it's a game that I've never played before but wanted to. But that 15 gig size is intimidating for my poor SD card. Unfortunate to hear about bugs but it's something that I think everyone expects this day and age.
Glad to see this have a release, however...shadowrun trilogy is dropping next, and that's the only mobile game release I have ever played to a finish, just like the originals, probably the best cyberpunk game release on switch imo (performance possibly the only holdback)
I really wish Nintendo would take notice. We love their back catalog and desire to play it. I would really like to play Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. Some of these older games are absolute gems.
I'm disappointed that this new version is only available on Switch at the moment. I'd love an update for the PC version, or a release on other consoles in the future!
A gem that i loved and saw fade away in the void of time passed is X wing alliance. Damn was it a fun game with a great story, yup, even for a space flight simulator with only audio coms.
PC will always be the definitive way to play this game. The Restored Content Mod is GREAT... but the modding community has done amazing things with countless other mods. I'll hold onto my physical pc copies of KOTOR and KOTOR 2 indefinitely.
Obsidian really had not the best luck while doing follow-ups to other people's games. Yet they somehow did enough things to be better in ways despite the shorter time frame forced upon them.
The black texture glitch after resuming from standby happens on KOTOR 1 on Switch for me. I was able to save it and restart though - which fixed the textures.
Man I love Star Wars and I’ve always heard how great the kotr games are, but I’ve never tried them. There is just something about the combat. It just doesn’t look like it would be fun to me, but I want it to be because I love Star Wars and always hear how great these games are. What should I do?
Very good as usual. One thing coming from a SW superfan - in Legends, Exile was canonicaly a woman named Meetra Surik. Of course I get that you can create a male and refer to the character as him, but feels wrong when listening xD Anyway, yours is a male so I get it. Still great review. Also, for fans who may not know - story continues in Revan book that explains what Revan did after the first game, and then what Meetra Surik did after the second game. After the book, the story is continued and finished in SWToR mmo on PC. Recommend it just for the story itself which is amazing.

Lucky for what? The only thing that improve in the last years are the graphic, gameplay has wotten worse and casual in almost all the genres.

They are releasing the restored content in this release it will come as dlc a bit later however
the planet is separate for a reason, very unfinished but they worked woth what they has. Rest of the restored content is amazing though :)

I'll be waiting for the Limited Run release like the first one. Hopefully the patches will be on the card by the time they go to print.

It’s amazing
shoehorned isn't really accurate. The original KOTOR engine was built from the ground up based on DnD combat rules.

The crashing is a fact of life I guess, but hey even back then on the XBOX, I was paranoid of blackouts where I lived then, they happened, but not often! More like "three or four years in between each other! But when they happen, they HURT as last time, I didn't save for a long while and it was not to far from an auto-save, then "blackout, all my progress was gone!" So lets just say, games with a Quick Save button were fun because it saved me seconds of saving every two minutes! (Guess I'll save after every fight just in case! But it's not something I haven't done already! Seriously some games should drop the "save point" stuff and allow a back-up save for this case! I hate a run ending because of a game error)
Now I hope they fix those crashes and that "blackening" issue soon. And I have to ask, has the Free DLC with the Removed Content been released with this and if not, when will it be! (Like to know, as I really don't want to start a new game unless I'm playing it, it's the one major reason this version caught my attention and not trying to find one to work on my laptop was to play that content! As I did say I played the hell out of this back on XBOX. I love KOTOR 1, but KOTOR 2 was to me, as Fallout New Vegas was to Fallout 3! I liked KOTOR1/Fallout 3, But I enjoyed AND loved KOTOR2/Fallout NV more! Ironic knowing who made those sequels and all!) Also hope the Dark Alliance 2 works well and is properly PRIZED compared to what they did with the first game (otherwise I'm using Gold Coins! KOTOR 2 and Dark Alliance 2 were my games back on XBOX! But since they're not adding new shit, they shouldn't be pricing it as the did Dark Alliance 1! I had to gather ALOT of gold coins from other purchases to lower Dark Alliance 1 to the Price it SHOULD have been marketed as! and I guess I'll have to do that for Dark Alliance 2 if they don't heed my advice!)
I think I'll hold off for the time being. Eventually I'll consider it when or if they fix many of these issues over time.
I own this game on everything it has been released on. And I’ve never experienced more game crashes (on any game actually) like I have with KOTOR 2 on the Switch. Like probably almost 10 times in 3 days? Absurd lol.
ETA: the cut scene aspect ratio is never consistent.. and the audio mix is horrid. But I still can’t help but keep playing. I love this game so much. Hopefully a update will fix these issues.
That black texture thing was happening to me recently on the first KOTOR. I also noticed if my switch went into sleep mode this did not suspend the game. So by the time i was done the game said i clocked over 100 hours of game play.

Anyone else have words cut off during character creating when not using all your skills? "You have not spent blah blah , saved for next level" last 3 letter on the right side are cutoff each line
Game needs a patch asap. Can’t get back to Onderon after clearing out the sith tomb on Dxun now I’m stuck. Every time the cutscene finishes when reentering Onderon the game crashes. Even if I go back to a previous save and work my way back up crashes at the same point over and over.

Honestly from I remember the blacked textures and random crashes were always kinda *there*, especially the crashes, I ever almost losing a save or two on the Xbox. Sounds like an altogether competent port that just needs some cleaning up.

I agree about the black textures. I remember having the black textures with the KOTOR 1 and 2 on PC back in 2003-2005 as well on the original xbox when I replayed it about 3 years ago.

I never got to play this one, I know all the lore. But only finished the first game, so this is super exciting for me. Darth Nihilus is my favorite sith and I just can’t wait to play this. Had to get rid of a frickin ton of other games to play this. I’ll have to re download later. But big whoop! I’m playing a ton of pac man and hot wheels lately and I can definitely still play those if I get burnt out on kotor…. All new to me, scared of how much time I’ll play this actually. ❤❤❤❤😊

That shadow bug when you wake your Switch is in Aspyrs KOTOR port too - you would really have hoped they'd fix it before releasing the second game, but here we are.

I used to call this 'The Glitch Lords' back when i played it on X box so hopefully it is at least better than that. Oddly enough the other bugs you report, especially the all characters going black one happened on the first one when i played it on Switch recently and i lost plenty of playtime to crashes then too.
It's DL now so i guess i'll find out soon if this is still 'The Glitch Lords'!

@@SwitchUpYt I remember this glitch on a boss fight where I couldn't move. Could use all force powers and everything, but couldn't move at all. That was a reload situation, a good way through the game too. Proper looking forward to the DLC!
obsidian actually helped development of the first kotor. Uncredited. In fact they shared around 50 different contract staff members n 100 full time employees with Bioware, at the time. This was revealed through various interviews in 2010.

Kotor 2 is back? Definitely amoung my favorite games. I cant wait to play it all the way through again.
Watching while I wait for my Switch to charge so I can buy it. The restored content is free and will hopefully be here soon.
Loved the kotor port but will wait for that update dlc to arrive before picking this up. Have never played it but my friends say it’s better with that content
Honestly I'm excited because it's a game that I've never played before but wanted to. But that 15 gig size is intimidating for my poor SD card. Unfortunate to hear about bugs but it's something that I think everyone expects this day and age.
I've got 4 256gb cards already, lol. Gotta love that backlog.

Glad to see this have a release, however...shadowrun trilogy is dropping next, and that's the only mobile game release I have ever played to a finish, just like the originals, probably the best cyberpunk game release on switch imo (performance possibly the only holdback)

I really wish Nintendo would take notice. We love their back catalog and desire to play it. I would really like to play Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. Some of these older games are absolute gems.

Is it worth the price? The KOTOR games are the best Star Wars media since the Original Trilogy, so yes. This game is absolutely worth the price!

A gem that i loved and saw fade away in the void of time passed is X wing alliance. Damn was it a fun game with a great story, yup, even for a space flight simulator with only audio coms.
PC will always be the definitive way to play this game. The Restored Content Mod is GREAT... but the modding community has done amazing things with countless other mods. I'll hold onto my physical pc copies of KOTOR and KOTOR 2 indefinitely.

Obsidian really had not the best luck while doing follow-ups to other people's games. Yet they somehow did enough things to be better in ways despite the shorter time frame forced upon them.
The black texture glitch after resuming from standby happens on KOTOR 1 on Switch for me. I was able to save it and restart though - which fixed the textures.
Shame Aspyr cancelled the restored content dlc.

Man I love Star Wars and I’ve always heard how great the kotr games are, but I’ve never tried them. There is just something about the combat. It just doesn’t look like it would be fun to me, but I want it to be because I love Star Wars and always hear how great these games are. What should I do?
Just buy it! i never played it and Loving it, finished Kotor 1 now started 2 . So cool and mind blowing to realize this is from 2003 and 2004 !

Very good as usual. One thing coming from a SW superfan - in Legends, Exile was canonicaly a woman named Meetra Surik. Of course I get that you can create a male and refer to the character as him, but feels wrong when listening xD
Anyway, yours is a male so I get it. Still great review.
Also, for fans who may not know - story continues in Revan book that explains what Revan did after the first game, and then what Meetra Surik did after the second game.
After the book, the story is continued and finished in SWToR mmo on PC. Recommend it just for the story itself which is amazing.
All we need is OG Battlefront 2 and my list of favorite Star Wars games on Switch will be complete!
