  • Join VOCES8 with the Academy of Ancient Music and soloists Carolyn Sampson, Eleonore Cockerham, Iestyn Davies, Jeremy Budd and Matthew Brook under the baton of Barnaby Smith for Bach's 'Mass in B Minor' as part of the Live From London Spring Festival. It's an epic work, so here are 10 minutes of what we consider to be some of the best bits!

The Times gave the concert a 5 star review:
"The outbursts of joy, the arrival of peace felt entirely natural. And during the all-important, inexorable Crucifixus, I longed to be right there in the Church of St Bartholomew the Great, absorbing the music in person."

There are plenty of recordings out there, dude. From the 1950s to the present day.

An incredibly little number of instrumentalists and singers - at last! The version I always dreamt of to hear if not to perform. Lots of thanks. Is a CD or DVD available?

Florian, VOCES8 hasn't recorded the B minor Mass, but there are several recordings of the piece by ensembles that use either one or two singers per part:
      Dunedin Consort/Butt
      Bach Ensemble/Rifkin
      Taverner Consort & Players/Parrott
      La Petite Bande/Kuijken
      Les Musiciens du Louvre/Minkowski
      Cantus Cölln/Junghänel
and the one I'd recommend most highly, Concerto Copenhagen/Mortensen.
(Mind you, that choice is subject to change if the Ricercar Consort, Concerto Stella Matutina, Montreal Baroque, or McCreesh and the Gabrielis record the Mass. And, frankly, I'd love to hear VOCES8 do the piece with just the eight singers in the group, but I suspect that Barney Smith doesn't want to do it that way.)

This is in my opinion from BWV 232 (Hohe Messe) and not BWV 238

Nice recording but the basses seem to get drowned out, and I like to hear them more clearly.

I've been long familiar with the B minor mass, but I don't recommend this video. To get the full impact listen the each movement in its entirety. Much more enlightening to Bach's purpose.

One word about the pronuntiation: in German church Latin it's "Eks-tsel-zis" and "Kru-tsi-fi-ksus", not "Ek-chel-sis" and "Kru-chi-fis-sus", which would be Italian Latin. For Bach you would use the first, for Verdi the latter one. Likewise, the G in "agimus", "virginem", "angelorum" etc. is always a normal G like in "gorge", never a J sounding G like in "George". The Y in "Kyrie" is pronounced like a German Ü, not like an I.
Of course you could sing the B minor Mass with Italian pronuntiation, but that is a similar break of style as using modern instruments instead of historical ones and unnecessarily flaws the performance.
