  • Session footage from VOCES8's recording of cantata 150 'Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich' by JS Bach. VOCES8 is recording with the Academy of Ancient Music (Bojan Čičič, leader), directed by Barnaby Smith. The track forms part of the VOCES8's 15th anniversary recording project, 'After Silence', and can be found on all digital music platforms. Notes by Paul Williamson
Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich, BWV 150, known only from secondary sources, is probably Bach’s earliest surviving cantata, written while he was organist at the Neue Kirche in Arnstadt (1703-7). The work’s modest scoring reflects the limited musical resources at his disposal; it is also an old- style Protestant cantata, untouched by the reforms of Erdmann Neumeister, who advocated the introduction of madrigalesque poetry, operatic recitatives and da capo arias. BWV 150 takes a more restrained Lutheran approach, setting texts from Scripture (verses from Psalm 25 in movements 2, 4 and 6) alongside interpretative stanzas by an unknown poet (in movements 3, 5 and 7). To understand the Psalms, Luther said, we must consider that David was a prophet, and unless he instructs otherwise, we must take the sacred poetry to refer to Christ. Accordingly, in BWV 150, the Psalmist’s entreaties to the God of the Old Testament find Christian meanings in the exegetical modern verse. Similarly, commenting on Psalm 25:15 (set in movement 6), Luther explains the image of the ‘foot’ being released from the ‘net’ as the redemptive power of God’s grace, delivering the faithful from worldly snares. Valuing sacred music as a divine gift, Luther also compared the harmonious singing of many voices to a ‘heavenly dance’, a point surely recalled by Bach in the final movement of Nach dir, Herr, which takes the form of a chaconne. Nearly two centuries later, Bach’s inviting little dance was famously reborn in the final movement of Brahms’ Fourth Symphony, premiered in October 1885.
    Text and Translation
    Words: Psalm 25:1-2, 5, 15 (mvts 2, 4, 6); anon. (mvts 3, 5, 7)
    1. Sinfonia
    2. Chor
Lord, I long for you. My God, I hope in you.
Let me not be put to shame, so that my enemies will not rejoice over me.
    3. Arie (Soprano)
Yet I am and remain content, although at the moment here may rage
cross, storm and other trials, death, hell, and what is theirs. Though misfortune strike the true servant, right is and remains eternally right.
    4. Chor
Lead me in your Truth and teach me; for you are the God, who helps me, I await you daily.
    5. Terzett (Alto, Tenor, Bass)
Cedars must, before the winds, often feel much hardship, often they will be destroyed. Place your words and deeds before God,
heed not what howls against you, since his Word teaches otherwise.
    6. Chor
My eyes gaze continually at the Lord; for he will draw my foot out of the net.
    7. Chor
    My days in suffering
God will nevertheless end in joy; Christians upon the thorny pathways are led by Heaven’s power and blessing.
If God remains my dearest treasure, I need not heed mankind’s cruelty; Christ, who stands by our side, helps me daily fight to victory.

There was not much possibility to find them that i had an orginal tapecasette recording of it. I was lucky. I remember listening to it over and over. It was almost broken down. Now going through videos i came across the opening of this beautiful catata and it caught me in a moment. I realised it was the academy of ancient music again. This could not be a coincidence. Thank you all. You and beautiful voices of voces8. There are some people who bring such music on earth🌺.

From 1708 when Bach was just 23 years old. An astounding composition for that age and maturity. His early cantatas were very different than the later more formulaic ones (not a criticism of the mature cantatas) But his earlier cantatas have more variety and are less predictable from a musical and structural standpoint. The music of Johann Sebastian Bach ranks very very high in my personal preferences, nevertheless I have to admit that Cantata 150 "Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich" completely escaped me until recently, when I first came across this video. After watching it several times now I can only fall in line with previous comments that said, that this rendition does Bach's music credit in the most amiable way. Especially the start of part IV "Leite mich in deiner Wahrheit" at 06:22 sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it. It is - for lack of a better word - perfect ❤

Some years ago I stumbled onto a study that rated the music of Bach as the highest for music therapy and healing. Of all the works measured Glen Gould's rendition of the Goldberg Variations topped that list.

I’m zipping through TH-cam videos just to make sure I haven’t missed something good. I come across this video, and, noticing it’s by VOCES8, I play it to see what my ears will be treated to. Bach is the ultimate in music as far as I’m concerned, and to see the focus and passion by the musicians and each singer put a lump in my throat for the whole performance. For me it’s just as thrilling as drinking or taking drugs-your music lights a fire in me that I can’t express. I’m not a professional musician, and I miss experiencing music up close like this. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your videos!!

I wonder what JS (Bach) would have said if he could have heard this absolute auditory masterpiece performed with such perfection.
I've had it on repeat for months now and cannot stop listening to it.
It's a funny thing, this music that we love.
When you get that Bach is not a "romantic" composer.
When you snap that Bach needs to be kept on time (rhythm).
When you realise there are cadences.
The entire piece is filled to the brim with fuges and you got that so beautifully in time and tune!
The scale running so smoothly between voices at the start of iv. Chorus: Leite mich in deiner Wahrheit. 6:22 STUNNING!

What a performance, what a treat. BWV 150 is a hidden gem amongst Bach's cantatas; it lacks the melodic appeal of other cantatas but it has an overwhelming internal richness. Beautiful video registration, the intimate 'rehearsal-setting' is much more appealing than a 'dressed up' setting. What blows me away every time here is the valiant call of the tenor at "täglich harre ich dein", after the soprano and the alto (7:46) - blimey. And very well done that the other singers do not try to match this, staying in their own expression.

8:20 what the actual... how have I never heard this aria before? The vigour of the cello then the sheer astonishing blend of the voices. It never ceases to amaze me how Bach tucks away these tiny little bits of musical perfection - they clearly came to him so frequently he could afford to place incredible ideas in the most incidental passages

Vielen Dank!

    1) This video of this recording of these groups doing this cantata for by this composer has very quickly become one of my favorite things in the world.
    2) These specific eight voices really bring the cantata to its full potential. Bach would be proud.
    3) Voces8 should absolutely do more Bach cantatas.
    4) In honor of Marja Kamp's comment, Jonathan Beyers executed perfectly Bach's arrangement of the cello line of Pachelbel's Canon at 8:21.
    5) I like Jonathan's pensive expression throughout, and the face on his cello case.

it is one thing to credit JS BACH a million-fold for bringing the notes to us but it is yet another feat to fully utilise the 'messages' -for want of a better word - that transposes it into our realm of listening, emotionally receiving and assimilating it and embracing every nuance of it. Voces8 did that for me like never before.
