    Hymn to St. Cecilia (English)
    I.
In a garden shady this holy lady
With reverent cadence and subtle psalm,
Like a black swan as death came on
Poured forth her song in perfect calm:
And by ocean's margin this innocent virgin
Constructed an organ to enlarge her prayer,
And notes tremendous from her great engine
Thundered out on the Roman air.
    Blonde Aphrodite rose up excited,
Moved to delight by the melody,
White as an orchid she rode quite naked
    In an oyster shell on top of the sea;
At sounds so entrancing the angels dancing
Came out of their trance into time again,
And around the wicked in Hell's abysses
The huge flame flickered and eased their pain.
    Blessed Cecilia, appear in visions
To all musicians, appear and inspire:
Translated Daughter, come down and startle
    Composing mortals with immortal fire.
    II.
    I cannot grow;
    I have no shadow
    To run away from,
    I only play.
    I cannot err;
    There is no creature
    Whom I belong to,
    Whom I could wrong.
    I am defeat
    When it knows it
    Can now do nothing
    By suffering.
    All you lived through,
    Dancing because you
    No longer need it
    For any deed.
    I shall never be Different.
    Love me.
    Blessed Cecilia, appear in visions
To all musicians, appear and inspire:
Translated Daughter, come down and startle
    Composing mortals with immortal fire.
    III.
O ear whose creatures cannot wish to fall,
O calm of spaces unafraid of weight,
Where Sorrow is herself, forgetting all
The gaucheness of her adolescent state,
Where Hope within the altogether strange
From every outworn image is released,
And Dread born whole and normal like a beast
Into a world of truths that never change:
Restore our fallen day; O re-arrange.
O dear white children casual as birds,
    Playing among the ruined languages,
So small beside their large confusing words,
So gay against the greater silences
Of dreadful things you did: O hang the head,
Impetuous child with the tremendous brain,
O weep, child, weep, O weep away the stain,
Lost innocence who wished your lover dead,
Weep for the lives your wishes never led.
O cry created as the bow of sin
Is drawn across our trembling violin.
O weep, child, weep, O weep away the stain.
O law drummed out by hearts against the still
Long winter of our intellectual will.
That what has been may never be again.
O flute that throbs with the thanksgiving breath
Of convalescents on the shores of death.
O bless the freedom that you never chose.
O trumpets that unguarded children blow
About the fortress of their inner foe.
O wear your tribulation like a rose.
    Blessed Cecilia, appear in visions
To all musicians, appear and inspire:
Translated Daughter, come down and startle
    Composing mortals with immortal fire.

I am SO glad to finally be able to SEE a performance of this spectacular Britten work by VOCES8! I have listened to the audio of their performance before and been astonished by the flawless intonation and the impeccable precision and clarity of the virtuosic technical and musical challenges Britten wrote. To have this done by only EIGHT voices is one of the foremost accomplishments of any small acappella group. All parts were outstanding, but special kudos to sopranos, Eleonore and especially Andrea, for brilliant work on the high solos!

Britten's work is incredible. How difficult it must be to sing it. I believe that I feel changed after listening to this piece. Grateful to have just experienced it and to have got lost in it.

I said it already over on The Book of Faces: I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS. I lead a wonderful dual life as a professional orchestral musician and a chorister, and this piece is very special to me (not the least of which because my wife of 29 years and I met 30 years ago on St Cecilia's Day - the patroness saint of music and musicians).

One of my favorite pieces, by one of my favorite composers, sung by my favorite group. I have heard many performances of this piece, live and on recordings. This reading is far and away the greatest I have heard - both in the interpretation of the music, the clarity of the words and true feeling for the text, and the flawless vocal sound - tuning, blend and balance. This is paradise. Thank you, VOCES8. You make this world a more beautiful place.

Wonderful to see conductor Barnaby Smith subtly directing from the extreme left - they are watching him very closely. Add to that his solo at 08:36 and this becomes a wonderful example of unity of purpose. Christopher Moore is stunning - as always.

  • @geraldharvey8979

Ravishingly beautiful! It can’t ever have been sung better. As a composer, I’m humbled when remembering that Britten composed chiefly at his desk, and only went to the piano at the end of each work period to check himself. Now, I can do this more or less with diatonic harmony, but CHROMATIC harmony such as this would take me much, much longer to realize, thus making it inefficient for me. Just...WOW!

The brilliancy and purity of this recording is truly astounding. I was introduced to Britten as a child performing in Noye's Fludde, almost half a century ago, which was, at the time, an absolute revelation to me. As a mature adult, decades later, this performance really feels like an encounter with what I imagined as a child would be the voice of the composer. I can't find the words to commend this performance highly enough... I'm listening to it on a loop. Keep doing what you do and spread the word!!!!!!!! The declamation of the tenor "like a rose" at around 9:45 is absolute perfection. But then, so is the entire performance of the ensemble. Wow!! The epitome of beauty.

I have said it before and I’ll say it again: the balance, intonation, blend, etc. of this group of 8 spectacular singers is beyond belief! And they make Britten’s formidable Hymn seem like child’s play. I must confess (and I’m reasonably sure I’m not alone) that I am absolutely smitten by Andrea’s singing and beauty!

Superlative. Easily the best recording I have heard (and seen!) of this. I am a big fan of Britten's and feel everything he wrote is a masterpiece (currently his setting of A New Year Carol / "Sing levy-dew" is floating around my head), but his Hymn to St Cecilia surely must be "it". Many thanks.

Magical music, magnificent singing - but of course, it's VOCES8, the very very best; perfection. Love you all; thank you

When I was in college choir way back in the 90s we worked on this piece. I loved it, but I don't think we actually ended up performing it because it was just too hard for us.

My university Chamber Choir attempted this in my 3rd year. We never got it good enough to perform, though. It was wonderful to hear it the way it was supposed to be sung.

I never thought I could love an "a cappella" piece but - as others have mentioned - the part starting at 6:32 is sheer genius

So grateful for singers like this who care about preserving this older music for us. They remind me of the American quartet Anonymous 4, but sans male voices. I'm checking into the CD's!

Kudos to Britten too. I recently purchased an album of his work that had been gathering dust on the shelves of Winchester Cathedral and I love it.

How come no one is mentioning Barnaby's AMAZING solo bit at 8:34?

OMG - you are so right! I was so astounded that I didn't get there first time around. That's a reflection on me, not on the performance....but the ensemble is so perfectly multifaceted that it is difficult to appreciate each individual contribution in one go. That's the beauty of recording though....you can listen to it over and over again and pick out some other perfect nuance at the next listening!
