Lovely reaction! And tying it into Fagan, I never thought of that, but you're right. (Oliver is a wonderful musical.) Please tell me you watched the outro on this song, it has some seriously cool BTS. Also, when "Jack's" eyes light up in this, the lights are in the shape of pumpkins. You know, like round carrots. Right Layne? LOL!💙
I think he had to go well out of his "acting" comfort zone to do this one. It's incredible - and I recall the first thing that struck me when I listened to it the first time was the richness and the emotions of/in his voice. Thank you for the reaction! 🌹🕊
You missed the end after the ending; it's very sweet. Love hearing you say Oogie Boogie, makes me smile every time. This song makes me want to give Jack a hug; Geoff is very good at expressing the emotions of whatever music he is interpreting. Happy Halloween! Hope you get lots of sweets.
Taking note that I’m incredibly biased: I love Geoff’s reworking the arrangements of the songs he covers, making them his own. His voice is uniquely beautiful. Thank you for this analysis. My personal favorite Geoff performances aren’t his fans’ favorites: “House of the Rising Sun” and “Shenandoah.” I believe you plan to analyze “Ain’t No Sunshine” which fills me with joy.
I found it surprising how good the music from "Nightmare before Christmas" was. I took the kids to see it not expecting much, but I so enjoyed it. Geoff is a great Pumpkin King! Thanks for featuring it.
Yet another I've been eagerly awaiting for you to react to/analyze. This is one of my overall favorite Geoff solo numbers. I think it is his top acting performances and also a great arrangement and vocal performance. As you said he has great attention to details. Every time I watch I notice a new background detail. After rewatching the original I realized how closely he has managed to mimic Jacks mannerisms. One nice touch is when he pats his hip to call Zero in.
Great reaction. It is my favorite song from The movie and I think he captured Jack’s duality perfectly! He goes from melancholy to menace so easily and his enormous range really helps him pull that off. I am a very visual person and even if I didn’t love the song, I would love this performance. He has the most expressive hands in this, from finger walking across the piano to reaching for the moon, it’s almost like they’re another character. Every time I watch it I’m drawn to his hands. It’s a very elegant picture. As I recall, this was just he and Kathy and a whole lot of Halloween decor from their home and some from PattyCake Productions.
Appreciate the thoughtful R&A, as always! I do hope you watched the ending of the video - it actually addresses one of the points you brought up about the ending, especially the final chords being so...discordant? Geoff didn't want to end things on such a low note (excuse the pun), so the epilog showed the first snowfall Jack had ever experienced, in preparation for his later journey to Christmas-town. And the small bits of BTS film included some of Geoff's makeup process, and his wife Kathy operating the puppet for Zero, Jack's ghost dog.
Wicked Advocate here. It's one of Geoff's best arrangements IMHO, and is the only VP performance I can think of with 2 female featured singers. Though it is a Broadway show, it's surprisingly without makeup, but the set is AMAZING! It will probably be a fairly long reaction since their video is nearly 8 minutes.
Geoffs favourite of his own songs is "High and Dry", maybe you'll want to check that one out. And for the upcoming Christmas Time: God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.
Monster Mash is my favorite from Geoff’s spooky selection but this one is also amazing. Just very different. Loved your R/A as always! Looking forward to the next one!
Theatricality maybe? 🎭 Bravo Geoff, Bravo Juliana and Bravo Sir Hairless! I became a fan of Geoff Castelucci when you covered the Oogie Boogie song with exactly the bits that you mentioned here - the high notes were so unexpected and really suited him, he was fabulous! 🤩 And how did Fagin find his way into this one?? Hahaha 😅 But yes, it was the same phrase as the one in I'm Reviewing The Situation - without a doubt! Amazing Sir H!👌 Thank you for this presentation and analysis - you are not only clever and knowledgeable but you make me laugh 😂🤣 Enjoyed it a lot a lot a lot! Bravo! 🙏💯🎃
Geoff is just so much fun to watch and listen to! Thank you for another wonderful reaction to him. For another couple of solo songs of his, you might take a look at "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Rains of Castamere". I struggled to be interested in "Ain't No Sunshine", since I really dislike the version played (almost constantly) on the radio. So I wasn't sure if I would be interested in Geoff's cover. But Geoff managed to convert me. It's an interesting rearrangement and it focuses a lot differently than the radio favorite. "Rains of Castamere" was one of his Game of Thrones songs and shows not just his arrangement and performance skills, but he actually added a section to the song as well. Honestly, it's hard to go wrong with Geoff or VoicePlay, so anything would be fun. But those are two that I like hearing professional musicians hear for the first time.
I believe the piano intro was actually played on the piano because I can hear the soft thump of the foot pedal being depressed to activate the reverb. Or rather being released because the felt bar is lowered back onto the wires inside the case and causes the thump.
It was played on the piano, just not THAT piano.... as far as I remember, Geoff said the piano in the studio (Pattycakes, where else) was terribly out of tune. Which made it kinda hard for him to continue playing and recording....
I believe I joined Geoff's Patreon the day before he dropped this on YT, so on top of being one of my favorite songs from my favorite movie, it has a special place in my heart. Glad to see you enjoyed it!
7:39 Sir H, I absolutely love how you can hear a small bit of music and it reminds you of something -- like Oliver! What a ear and what a memory for music, sir!!!
Thank you for coming back to Geoff's solo channel. This is last year's Halloween release. Love it! You missed the end of the video (after Geoff's logo) when Jack discovered snow....followed by some of the BTS. I always look for your reaction and analysis videos as I learn and appreciate more of the details that otherwise pass me by. I agree with many others, Geoff's "Monster Mash" is wonderful and great fun.
🎼👽 .. what an amazing collection of skills Geoff possesses .. really just amazing !! Thanks for sharing this right before Halloween Sir Hairless. 🦹🦹🦹🦹🦹🦹👶🦹🦹🦹🦹🦹🦹🦹
Geoff can play the piano, I think it is him playing it, but recorded. This one is still as epic as when it came out. It gives me shivers, honestly. I love his mouth shape on the word "moan."💙
I LOVE Geoff's voice, especially in songs like this! The word that comes to mind for me is "otherworldly". Not only his range, but his control of dynamics is just phenomenal. Thank you again Sir H. for another great reaction. Your facial expressions are a delight to watch P.S. at 7:26 the words that immediately came to my mind as soon as you sang the notes were "yidle-diddle-didle-didle man...." (My mother and I watched and sang along to this movie dozens of times over the years) Then when you played the clip from "Oliver", (believe it or not, I was a toddler when it came out!) that triggered many, many joyful memories of my sisters and I singing along. So thank you for that, as well
Oo yes, "otherworldy" is a good word 🪐 Haha memories were triggered for me too - we used to watch that in the early mornings before the parents were awake
@SirHairless as far as the other Lyrics I mentioned, as a female I actually have a low singing voice. (think Toni Braxton -Unbreak My Heart. I can't hit the upper range though...) I always loved to belt out Topol's part! Mom would just shake her head a little and smile. Now I'm off to watch that Fiddler! Talking about it does that to me.
So glad I came across your channel! Geoff does occasionally have Layne playing violin. That happened, I believe, on Misty Mountains Cold. Looking award to you checking out a few more of Geoff's solo efforts. His rendition of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is one you might appreciate coming into the season.
Geoff would absolutely credit Layne in the description if he played violin. I have not seen or heard of this yet in one of his covers but would love for it to happen.
Theatricality! The word you're looking for instead of theatrical...ness... is theatricality. I wanted to add a very personal Thank You to you. I've always loved music, but never have I been able to wrap myself around music theory. Watching your videos has broken down ideas and concepts that I have never quite understood into pieces i can take, internalize, and learn from. So... thank you for giving me a new way to experience music, one that I have long been missing and deeply longing for. And, as always, love to hear your thoughts and see how you understand the music and the theatrical...ness... of Geoff's work.
Thank you! This is such a "beautiful" piece I'm so glad you got around to it. You note a lot more of Geoff's stunning musicality than I ever pick up, so I always enjoy your reactions.
When I first heard this song sung by Geoff (hadn't seen the movie) I let out a big giggle at the end of his first sentence "...at what I do, I am the best" 😅 I was like : "Oh Geoff, you definitely ARE!!!" 😅❤ And now I can't listen to the song without that thought in mind 😂 This arrangement is a masterpiece... AGAIN 🤩 Happy, that you liked it 🫶🏻 Thank you for the reaction and the patreon for the request 🫶🏻
I feel like speaking on pitch is very Broadway, so I'm not surprised the people from the group known as the Theatre Kids of Acapella are good at that, lol. This song will probably always be on my favorites list from Geoff. Just amazing!! He and Layne are both so good at keeping the soul of a song in tact while completely changing the arrangement. Always so skillfully done. Happy Halloween!!! 👻🎃
Yay! So glad you enjoyed this one! It was a wonderful reaction and analysis 👏🏻👏🏻😁 as per usual. Trust that you’ll have a reaction to the “Song of Durin” cover by Geoff in the future 😉 That one was recently released and it’s wonderful.
I was SO happy to see that you reacted to Jack's Lament!! I think this is my favorite solo work from Geoff. I can't even say WHY... I just love it! I appreciate the context and explanations you offer. You give me even MORE to think about! Great reaction!!
I get the vibe of "If I Were A Rich Man" from Fiddler on the Roof too. Pentatonix does a cover of "Making Christmas" from Nightmare Before Christmas too. Thanks for another informative reaction.
Oh, that was fun! Didn't know the song at all, but I love this performance and Geoff in here, his singing and acting, really great! And I love you as always, I love when you are smiling like this, intrigued and relaxed and enjoy the performance! ❤ Thank you, enjoyed you! 😉
Thank you, Sir Hairless. Great input. This is my favorite Geoff arrangement and performance. Compared to the original, this is outstanding. I loved the way he created a feeling musically, theatrically, and vocally. Not a bunch of other Geoff's, just him with his immense talents.
Very excited to enjoy your reaction and analysis to this one. I think each part of the production - arrangement, music, background, costume, extras - are all so well done.
Loved your analysis on this great video by the super talented Geoff - merci beaucoup! I wish a 🎃happy Halloween🎃 to you and to all members of Sir Hairless’ lovely community!🍬👻🍬
I would love to hear you breakdown Geoff's cover of "Way Down" or as many others said "Monster Mash" or even "The Headless Horseman" where he channels his inner Thurl Ravenscoft... all give a glimpse of his goofy sense of humor. Loved this analysis.
Неожиданно, но мне очень понравилось, вся эта постановка с таким исполнением. Первый раз слышу этого исполнителя, надо с дочерью поделиться, моей 23 летней "ведьмочкой" у неё сегодня день рождения).
Excellent reaction and analysis, and truth about Halloween sweets! Two of my favorite solo videos from Geoff are Ghost Riders in the Sky, which is awesome not just because it introduced us to Daryl (in the long coat), who is the fourth clone, joining Jeff, Goff, and Jeoph. And God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, which I listen to year-round, not just at Christmas.
Love your thoughtful and educational analyses! I sadly have forgotten most of the little bit of music theory I learned in my one college class in it. As far as Geoff songs, for something completely different and a lot of fun, Way Down is great. I also love Ghost Riders in the Sky.
Always love your breakdowns of Geoff and VoicePlay’s music/arrangements. Long story short: I’m not a musician, I’m an author. But your analysis’ touch on how one relates to another, and how they intertwine-so I’m always super excited whenever you break down a song that entranced me for a reason I was unable to comprehend.
I may have said this before, but my favorite GC song is Blackbird. It's quite different from the ones you've reacted to so far. Low theatrics . High on sheer beauty of voice and arrangement.
I think the word you were looking for is theatricality. I know you call VP masters of rhythm, but I think Geoff is especially adept at using dissonance in his arrangements to create tension or suspense. I would like to see your reaction to VP's version of This is Halloween, also from Nightmare Before Christmas. It's a Geoff arrangement and the visuals are incredible. As for Geoff's solo work I recommend Way Down, Man of Constant Sorrow, High & Dry, Sixteen Tons, and Don't Mess Around With Jim.
Can I say I enjoy your voice crack 😂? Especially how you edited your video to show that part! Ha ha!! I wasn't familiar with the film last year when I saw this the first time, but later on I watched it and I appreciate Geoff's arrangement more. I loved how he thoughtfully created this cover with the emotion that fits Jack the best. And there are always many details in Geoff's or VoicePlay's videos (like he tapped his leg to call Zero and Zero just showed up afterwards). Great analysis!!
For other songs from this movie Pentatonix did "Making Christmas" which you will notice recycles some of the themes here as well. "This is Halloween" by Voiceplay is just plain fun in addition to being very good. Voiceplay did several songs from the movie. Then you maybe can take apart some other Danny Elfman Oingo Boingo songs. "Dead Man's Party" is pretty much a Halloween party song but I'd actually like to see analysis on "Just Another Day"
The Oliver Twist reference (7:50) strikes another chord (if you'll pardon the pun) with Geoff fans: Our reaction to his every video is, "Please, suh, I want some more!" 🤣
You can thank Rick Underwood for the fantastic makeup, including all the little details like the painting of the bones on the palms of Geoff's hands, not just the backs. Most of the pumpkins used in the video belong to the Castelluccis (one of the large pumpkin stacks belongs to PattyCake Productions). The tombstones belong to PCP. Geoff found that amazing moon light on Amazon. The video shoot piano was, as happened with the Shenandoah video, woefully out of tune. The scene at the end, intended to give a bit of hope after such a somber song, was originally meant to have the present Geoff had in White Christmas to suddenly appear before Jack, but they couldn't find it. While Kathy was talking to Tony about it, he said "Oh, we have a snow machine" and thus, the credits scene was born. Zero (including Geoff patting his leg to call him) was not in the cut of the video released to Patreon, and Jack's eyes turned red rather than having the pumpkins in them as they do in the final edit. Besides Jack and Oogie Boogie, Geoff's played a secret jack o'lantern in What's This? and Mr. Hyde in Kidnap the Sandy Claws.
not sure what the others recommended, but the Headless Horseman is a very similar feel, very spooky. 16 Tons remains my all-time favourite of his, but if you are a fan of Elvis, Way Down is probably Geoff's cheekiest, most outrageous video and *everyone* would love your reaction to that one :D
Doing several videos to catch up. Suggest GOLDEN HOUR with Anthony Garguila. It was a song Anthony was known for and shows a bit more of his range. Also Geoff's wife Kathy has an acting role in it.
Sir, when you said that something in the song reminded you of another musical, I thought you were going to say Fiddler on the Roof. I think it also works for your example. What do you think?
Another small detail that also adds to the eeriness of the song is that the piano is slightly out of tune. Nice catch by the way on the 'broken machine'/organ part at the end. I didn't even notice that at first. All in all: A very well done arrangment and performance by Mr 5 octaves Geoff Castelucci. And the video itself with the set, make-up and visual effects was masterfully done as well. Props to the entire video and audio production crew(s).
I was thinking about this song and hoping to hear this because of the Halloween season. He sings this in much more of foreboding way. Perfect for the season. Zero is cool. 🖤R/A🎼
It's only unfortunate in that, in my opinion, it shows Jack's Lament to be a very 3rd rate song compared to the masterpiece of music theatre (once again in my opinion) that is I'm reviewing the situation. No worries.
@@jerryj1411 Thanks for clarifying what you meant 👍🏽The songs are evidently very different. Just that one bit is the pretty much the same If anything it's interesting how the same musical idea can be used very naturally in two completely different contexts/settings
I really like this song and Geoff looks so great, this make up, wow!🎃🤩👍 Next, I really recommend: "Blackbird" a Beatles cover...🫵❤️🔥you can also hear his Range out well...amazing!👍👍🤗💋
If this has got you feelin' spooky this H'ween, you might enjoy this playlist 🎃👻th-cam.com/play/PL-tAjLxAAkA98tNmdtgUj9XEP6DuN4U9M.html

Gotta love Geoff. Tomorrow you really ought to do Geoff's version of The Monster Mash - absolutely brilliant.
Edit: yes, theatre.
No time to get that one in this year unfortunately But today's video will be another song from this film
I think he had to go well out of his "acting" comfort zone to do this one. It's incredible - and I recall the first thing that struck me when I listened to it the first time was the richness and the emotions of/in his voice.
Thank you for the reaction!
🌹🕊
This is SUCH a good piece. He's clearly having so much fun being dramatic.

Thanks Dorothy! Yes, "Ain't No Sunshine" will most likely be coming in the new year due to a very intense remainder of the year for me 🎵
This is my favorite solo Geoff video. He's unbelievably talented and so entertaining ❤
I found it surprising how good the music from "Nightmare before Christmas" was. I took the kids to see it not expecting much, but I so enjoyed it. Geoff is a great Pumpkin King! Thanks for featuring it.
Just gotta love a movie score from Danny Elfman (and many of the vocals as well.).
I was definitely surprised with just about everything with the film! Had no idea what to expect 😅
Yet another I've been eagerly awaiting for you to react to/analyze. This is one of my overall favorite Geoff solo numbers. All the props came from Geoff and Kathy's place both inside and outside. I love this song - it really is a lament. I feel so sorry for Jack.
Geoff's version seems much more soulful and lamenty. Definitely hits differently.
I think the word you were looking for is theatricality. Great analysis, and this is definitely one of my favorites from Geoff.
Monster Mash is my favorite from Geoff’s spooky selection but this one is also amazing. Just very different. Loved your R/A as always! Looking forward to the next one!

"Ain't No Sunshine" was a previous members' poll winner, so it will be coming at some point, probably in the new year 🎵
@@SirHairless Hurray!
Geoff and Kathy did the set dressing themselves, much of which came from their home.
Geoff even grew the small pumpkin on the piano.
This is a favorite of mine. Thank you for sharing

He uses a midi keyboard
The effects you hear may very well be that - just built into the software
I believe I joined Geoff's Patreon the day before he dropped this on YT, so on top of being one of my favorite songs from my favorite movie, it has a special place in my heart. Glad to see you enjoyed it!

One of my favorites by Geoff. Thank you for including it to your Halloween choices!

This guy has a lovely voice and this is a great cover of Jack's Song.
That sound at the beginning I'm pretty sure is the foot pedal on the piano. :)
Thanks for the reaction. Always enjoy your analysis! :)
Ahhh of course 🤦♂As a piano player, I'm embarrassed
I look forward to hearing your reaction to Geoff’s ‘Blackbird’
The perfect way to prep for Halloween! brilliant reaction and analysis. thank you so much :D
Theatricality? Is that a word? Drama?
❤❤❤❤ your analysis?
The shushing noise you refer to during the piano intro is the pedal of the piano lifting and lowering.
5:50 theatricality! 😊 Great video!
I may have said this before, but my favorite GC song is Blackbird. It's quite different from the ones you've reacted to so far. Low theatrics . High on sheer beauty of voice and arrangement.
Thanks, yes that one is on my list!
Layne arranged This is Halloween 😊
@@thisismetoday7423 My mistake, I thought Geoff had done it because he helmed the video. Didn't realize they had split the duties for this one!
@ Yeah, they don’t usually do that! 😃
I was hearing "Yeidl diddle didle idle man" from Fiddler on the Roof
Thank you! That musical phrase kept sounding so familiar, but I couldn't place it.
If you want something of Geoffs' with a similar vibe to this, The Headless Horseman one is legit
"Dead Man's Party" is pretty much a Halloween party song but I'd actually like to see analysis on "Just Another Day"
Pentatonix's 'Making Christmas" may or may not be the video I release on Halloween itself this year
I agree to Geoff doing Monster Mash. Also check out PTX "Making Christmas" from the nightmare Before Christmas
The Oliver Twist reference (7:50) strikes another chord (if you'll pardon the pun) with Geoff fans: Our reaction to his every video is, "Please, suh, I want some more!" 🤣
The one part also reminds me of Fidler On The Roof.
❤
not sure what the others recommended, but the Headless Horseman is a very similar feel, very spooky. 16 Tons remains my all-time favourite of his, but if you are a fan of Elvis, Way Down is probably Geoff's cheekiest, most outrageous video and *everyone* would love your reaction to that one :D
Thanks 😊
A better substitute term for 'theatrical-ness' in my opinion, would be 'theatricality'.
I believe you were looking for "theatrics"
Watched because Geoff, subscribed because of the channel name lol
Doing several videos to catch up. Suggest GOLDEN HOUR with Anthony Garguila. It was a song Anthony was known for and shows a bit more of his range. Also Geoff's wife Kathy has an acting role in it.
❤❤❤❤❤
😀
See how Lara copes with opera. Lara Fabian - Addio del passato.
Sir, when you said that something in the song reminded you of another musical, I thought you were going to say Fiddler on the Roof. I think it also works for your example. What do you think?
I'm afraid I've not seen Fiddler on the Roof yet 😅That's one for the future
@ great idea for an episode!
🖤R/A🎼
Interesting reaction, as ever.
The comparison with Oliver, Reviewing The Situation, Ron Moody, was unfortunate.
An A+ song versus a frankly C- effort.
Why’s that unfortunate? They share the same musical theme, and hearing one immediately made me think of the other
It's only unfortunate in that, in my opinion, it shows Jack's Lament to be a very 3rd rate song compared to the masterpiece of music theatre (once again in my opinion) that is I'm reviewing the situation.
No worries.
@@jerryj1411 Thanks for clarifying what you meant 👍🏽The songs are evidently very different. Just that one bit is the pretty much the same
If anything it's interesting how the same musical idea can be used very naturally in two completely different contexts/settings
I really like this song and Geoff looks so great, this make up, wow!🎃🤩👍 Next, I really recommend: "Blackbird" a Beatles cover...🫵❤️🔥you can also hear his Range out well...amazing!👍👍🤗💋
