This video came to be because of their patrons. VP was celebrating a big milestone and told their patrons that they could vote on any music video, and that the winning video would be made. Many suggestions and much voting later, to VoicePlay's horror, "Boy Band Medley" won the poll... They could have gone the easy route and just done a simple little medley, but instead they went all in and spent 6 months learning the choreography to all these songs, arranging all of this, getting all those costumes, and created this materpiece of fun! 😄😄

So glad you saw this too. The boys finally broke Sir Hairless!
I continue to be impressed with how over the top they (Geoff) took this project. They could easily have made a video of the Boy Band 101 part of their stage show to meet the brief, but no.

I do keep forgetting how much great fun this video is. The giggle smile from our illustrious host is evidence enough.
VoicePlay tried choreography this themselves and realized they weren't getting anything remotely good, so they handed it over to professionals, lol. I'm not so sure they found the dancing as much fun as we do.
With all of the copyright releases and extra expenses involved, I imagine that they've still not made a penny from this.

A little fun fact. The part that you liked the most in Boys II Men 16:54 is the "harmony" that got them discovered. They had snuck backstage to a Bell Biv Devoe Concert (see time stamp 15:05) who were members of New Edition (see time stamp 15:00), and cornered the trio backstage and dropped this harmony on them which resulted in Bel Biv Devoe signing Boys II Men (originally).

I'll take the chance to suggest you a particular video by VP that has a special place in my heart... At 10:55 in your video, a guy walks across the scene, throwing something in the trash can they're around. He's Rek Dunn, and Voiceplay got a video dedicated to him, which is the "Halo Theme". Now, I'm no gamer, so the Halo game has nothing to do with why it has that special place in my heart. Don't misunderstand me, the video is absolutely GREAT, and I didn't find it in your VP playlist... So here I am to suggest it, and what gave it that special place in my heart is actually not the song in itself, which was praised by the very author in a joined reaction video made with The Charismatic Voice (he said it was the best version of the theme he EVER heard, including his own), but the second half of the video... The long outro in which Scott Porter, the featured artist, explains the reasons behind the video. I believe it adds so much to it, and at the same time spend a window on "the human side of Voiceplay".
BTW... Dancing has never been VP's cup of tea, as far as I know. Likely someone will correct me. 😅
Enjoyed every bit of your reaction and analysis, as always. I thought you'd have a lot of fun with this one, and I loved watching you having fun watching it. 😁
    See you next time!

You need to get on Boys II Men, they're dudes who met and sung back in their school days and right into their singing careers as a group - very acapella. Voiceplay's rendition of their song is pretty similar to the original.

The violence with which I grabbed my phone and clicked play almost resulted in a phone casualty! This is such a fun one from them. Arranged by Geoff and took them 6 months to complete. I say totally worth the effort!! And we learned that Geoff and Eli are both good dancers! 🕺🏼 They sing Sherry from Jersey Boys in their ACA Top 10 Broadway video with Earl taking lead. So good. The dance they did for Walk Like A Man was Beyones Single Ladies Dance!

If I remember correctly, I think I read that Voiceplay brought in a professional choreographer for this video. That probably explains more of the modern moves even in the older songs. However, I would also argue that there’s just a bit of signature Voiceplay cheekiness in some of those choices as well.
For example, in the Frankie Valli part, the dance moves in the chorus are from the music video to Single Ladies. So there’s definitely some funny, intentional irony to hearing Walk Like A Man while seeing the dance to female legend and powerhouse Beyoncé.
BTW, equally as amusing is the line that you were unsure how you felt about where they added the quote “you should see the size of his wallet”. The guy who delivered that line is Earl’s husband (whom you have seen in the Queen in 5 Minutes medley), surrounded by Geoff’s, Layne’s, and Eli’s wives. They literally thought of everything! 😂

Yes, the funny parts (Layne with the dickie, goofy choreo, etc) are intentionally funny. I really enjoyed seeing your enjoyment on this one, it's ok to let yourself laugh and pause the analysis for a moment.
VP actually kind of hate doing videos with choreography, but they know the fans enjoy them and this one was a Patron request after they hit a big milestone on Patreon. So they were very much catering to that audience. The dancing was choreographed by Kristin Denehy, who was previously the choreographer for The Sing Off. Not sure who's idea it was to include the Single Ladies dance during Walk Like A Man though.
Another amusing easter egg - the gossips are the spouses of the guys in the band. Earl's husband Nick is talking to Kathy (Geoff's wife), Cyndi (Layne's wife), and Ashley (Eli's wife). J wasn't married yet at that point.

Members of VoicePlay may like NSYNC, but not as much as Deadpool does.🤣🤣🤣 This is a fun one for sure, but it took a lot of time to make, apparently. VoicePlay's weak spot is dancing, believe it or not. I love how in "Pop Life" all their props are things that pop, or are pop (soda!) Also, in the BTS song, they sing parts of it in Korean.💙

  • @janetdw
    @janetdw 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

This is one of my favorite medleys. I never leave without a big smile on my face. It always manages to cheer me up. I don’t know if it’s because of the memories all those songs brought back or just that it’s a fun fun video.
So funny! Candy Girl was the only one I DIDN’T know. I have to confess however that I couldn’t always keep the correct names for all those 90s boy bands in my head but I recognized all the songs and could name them.
I’m pretty old and grew up with the Frankie Valli era songs (long before Jersey Boys), listened to all of the 90 boy bands with my son (not always voluntarily), and recognized the last one because of my neighbor’s grandson.
Maybe you didn’t recognize them because these are mostly American hits? A lot of these older ones I remember watching from Dick Clark’s American Bandstand! That’s how old I am😂.
Boyz II Men was my son‘s favorite group. Fortunately I liked them as well. I’m a sucker for street corner harmonies . The one I always think of is End of the Road. Home Free did a really nice version of that which surprised the heck out of me because before I had only heard them do country which is not my thing. So after that I checked out the rest of the catalog and they cross genres occasionally as well. Just not with utter abandon like VoicePlay does.😊
BTW, Eli spent time in Korea and learned much of the language. In the last song, Fake Love by K-pop band BTS, Eli is singing his lines in Korean.
And so clever to begin with two songs titled I Want You Back and then to make the last line of the medley those same words. !!

The choreography for Walk like a man is from Beyonce's All the single ladies, (put a ring on it) which makes is so much more hilarious. Back in the Beatles era I actually danced like that. I’m gobsmacked that you’ve been so seduced by the sheer joy of VP that you’ve abandoned analysis. Personally, I believe the guys are not aiming at sarcasm in these mini covers. Their parodies are joyful fun (yes, they’re poking fun at “boy bands”). Isn’t it deliciously delightful?

Agreed! Just want to add that I think part of the reason they are poking fun at boy bands is because Voiceplay originally WAS a boyband, when they were teens in the 90s. So in a way they're poking fun at themselves.

  • @Badger77722
    @Badger77722 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

This one was fun to watch your reaction - not being all that familiar with the songs, you were able to at least partially just enjoy the singing and the antics of VoicePlay without worrying too much about the technical analysis, and it was really nice to see that side of you!
If I tried to recognize these songs by name, I'd be in much worse shape than you, because Boy Bands were never on my listen-to list. But surprisingly, I knew all but about 5 of the songs as soon as VP sang them, so I'd obviously heard them on the radio, even if I didn't pay much attention to them.
One thing a number of reactors have commented on (especially those who ARE familiar with the songs and bands) is how much Geoff's bass stands out to them, as that's a vocal tone that isn't included in a lot of Boy Bands - and if it is, it certainly doesn't have the depth and resonance that Geoff does!
Speaking of Geoff - if you ever get around to watching his Monster Mash (definitely a Halloween song!), he shows that he does, indeed, have some dance moves - is there anything that man can't do?
And somehow, I never would have put The Beatles into a medley of Boy Bands - but they actually DO fit the general description of one!

Voiceplay always say that to be part of their group you need to subscribe to their brand of dumb 😉.
They are very deliberate and pay attention to detail.
This specific video took a heck of a lot of work... not only to learn the dance moves but also the arrangement (to have seamless transitions - I think Geoff arranged this one?) as well as the costume changes and lighting.

When it comes to Boys to men, I remember hearing an album with them that I enjoyed a lot, at a friend’s house, in my early 20s (about 25 years ago). I thought I would look more into them, but never did (internet wasn’t really a thing yet, and there was definitely no Spotify or TH-cam or anything like it. I would have needed to go to a record store and buy an album, and never got around to doing so). The only song that I remember is ”End of the Road”. It is soooo beautiful! That was a fun one for you and us! I think this one came out a little before I started following Voice Play. I recognized most of the songs. This one made me think of Home Free’s Country Fried Pop Medley which includes 17 artist and 15 artists. It’s really, really good! Hope you check it out. It’s an older one with Chris.

I"m glad that you're having a blast with this one!! And it's okay to let go your analytical brain and just enjoy their goofiness and hilarious video!! Choreography is definitely not their strong suit (go easy on Layne 😂), but they still went for it for their patrons. It's definitely super entertaining, but also many interesting music ideas in it!!

No Sweetie. Walk like a Man came first. That is the original choreo the Four Seasons used. Beyonce took it for Single Ladies. You can google it.

I loved that they chose the best One Direction song and that they just did the dance steps that the guys do in the official music video because in fact the 1d did those dance steps just for fun since they don't like to dance and how great that other people can have fun doing those dances like in these types of videos, I love it

❤😂 Definitely fun and very tongue in cheek! Most of the dances are directly from the original music videos except "Walk like a Man" where they used the choreo from Beyoncé's "Put a Ring On It". I think at the end there they were just winging it.😅 So much fun!

You missed something there - s’ok, it took me like 50 views to get it. 😊
They hit us with sort of a string of visual puns.
In the song “Dirty Pop” where it starts with all the balloons? Think “pop” and watch it again.
    Balloons pop.
    Bubble wrap…pops.
    Bubbles…pop.
    Bubble gum blows bubbles…pop.
Cans of soda…another word for soda is…pop.

The dance moves for "Walk Like a Man" is from Beyonce's "Single Ladies" (put a ring on it). For Boyz to Men, I recommend "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday." Lovely song.

I generally only watch the Pentatonix reactions but wanted to watch this one because it's rather fun. So slightly off topic fun fact, based on you mentioning boyz II men. On the sing off, one of the judges who were the biggest fan of Pentatonix (he was also a judge during the voice play/homefree season I'm pretty sure...?) was in Boyz II men! He went to view their concert just last year! I've not listen to them much but everything I've heard of them has been spectacular and I know they are iconic to many people.

This was a fun time travel medley! I really enjoyed watching you enjoy it. It's perfectly fine for you to enjoy yourself and analyze things! I personally feel like the 70s was the era of masterful guitar solos, the 80s was boy bands and power ballads by hair bands (think giant puffy waves of hair and the bangs/fringe up 4 inches), the 90s I was so busy as a single mother that I stayed with mostly my 80s comfort bands but the 90s saw a lot of change, too. Each decade brings its own flair to music. I am interested to see what the future brings!

Lol fun to see you enjoying this one so much. I would love to hear you react to Boyz II Men! They are impressive. Honestly for me their version of Yesterday, blows the original out of the water. I’m someone who tends to prefer the first version of a song that I hear, so it takes a lot for me to be wowed into favoring a new version especially when it’s a song that I really liked the original. They have a lot of great songs. End of the road is great. Their Christmas album is one of my 3 favorite Christmas albums. Definitely though do their version of Yesterday 🤯🥰 it’s so good! Thank you as always!

I always love this video. It's just so much fun! I think that you might find "Fake Love" from BTS to be interesting. I like their song "Idol" better, but there are other factors that make it more of a favorite. 🙃 I'm not a huge BTS fan, but they have some songs that I enjoy (if you ever do want to delve into any Kpop or Kpop-adjacent, I have some song recommendations with INCREDIBLE vocals that you might enjoy.) I definitely, absolutely, one THOUSAND percent, recommend checking out Boyz II Men. They have some of the most amazing vocal harmonies ever. The top three songs that I usually recommend to people are some of their more well-known songs, but I think that the popularity doesn't detract from how well done the songs are. I'd recommend "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday", "End of the Road", and "Motownphilly".

I have now listened to quite a few of your reactions and I'm a fan. There is one musician missing on your list (in my opinion 😊) and that's Angelina Jordan. I think you should start with her cover of I Put a Spell on You at 9 years old. Her Angels will more than likely fill you in on where to go from there. Have fun.

When you do Boys II Men, start with their early songs with 4 part harmonies. Their bassist left and they became a trio.
