Treys list of musical influences are so diverse. I love it. I was never part of the right knit group known as Phans but I really dig the band. It's like prog meets jam which isn't supposed to work. But they make it happen. Trey is a special dude.
trey has cited frank as his biggest single influence musically along with the talking heads. i have always thought his guitar playing is a lot more like franks than anyone elses.
Interesting to view this again now that Phish has been absolutely killing it across the nation in the the summer of 2015. Also interesting how we get the strongest ideas (like breaking up Phish) and later have stronger ideas in the complete opposite direction. I love this man and I love the band, rarely does a day go by where I don't listen to some of their music.

Zappa's influence is really clear on a lot of Lawn Boy. If I didn't know Split Open and Melt was a Phish song, you could probably convince me that Zappa had composed it.
My first exposure to Phish was at a friend's birthday bash in April of 1991. We were all Deadheads, and we all dosed that night. Someone threw in a copy of Lawn Boy... It was confusing, but interesting at the same time. We listened to it 3 times in a row. Halfway through the third listen, it hit me... "I know what this is!!!" I told everybody. "This is what you get when Frank Zappa goes to Fraggle Rock!"

This was really great. So much of the music that he cherishes is right in my wheelhouse. The Rosalita experience, The Zappa /Wackerman story, etc, just gold. He also says something that I have been saying for a long time, Phish's early work has a lot of composed pieces that don't have jamming, those are my favorite. Junta is my favorite prog record. I wish they had done a little more of that later in their career, but I still love what they did do.
Here is what Trey seemed to be saying at the 8:30 mark of this Charlie Rose video regarding the 6-18-94 Phish show: "We were at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago and we're playing Divided Sky we got down to this quiet part where it's silent quieter and quieter and then became silence and I had my eyes closed and I could feel the crowd, and I started to because improvising is trying to translate what is out there already, a greater pattern of things and sometimes it feels like it's coming through a hole and you couldn't play wrong note if you tried it is floating and at that moment you're in the middle of it and I started to see these colors like, I’m not kidding, floating around there and I realize that I could almost be, it was silent I could see what we were translating and as soon as I could see them I started improvising but I didn’t play anything I did everything in that sense for improvisations except the actual notes and as soon as I did it the whole place erupted haaaaaaaaa, and it just tears started rolling down my face it was at that moment that I knew that it was truly bigger than me, IT. That’s what a lot of people don’t see, maybe because people are into like jazz music and improvisation where you use the instrument to speak, you can have a new musical conversation within the band and within the audience every single night. Jerry and the Dead are really one of the greatest musical groups to ever be and they’re American as apposed to lots of other groups in like the 60s
I am completely drawn in every time this guy touches his guitar. Even hearing him express his love for his rig, the music, the feelings that come with it all is truly amazing. We need more Zappa dead Trey bands and artists.

And last nite. In 2021 I just watched Trey play the most incredible solo tour show i ever seen him play. And his drummer had covid and Fish flew in to save the day. He played incognito in blue jeans a baseball cap and tshirt. People at first didnt even realize it. And played nothing but phish songs and as that was happening it dawned on people. It was an incredible night. Finally took my old man to see Trey in person. As he brought me the likes of Zappa and Jerry Garcia and the Dead. It was my turn to introduce him to my Guitar Hero. Always was. Always will be. 27 year diehard Phan. And hope to see more and more as life continues. It Never gets old . And damn this interview makes me miss the SHIT out of Charlie Rose. My Goat in terms of back in the day tv interviewers. Period. Over even larry king. Love this guy and miss him. Fell victim to Me too. That was a bummer

Like many nights at Phish, they are out of body religious experiences filled with emotions that stimulate the senses.....how powerful your senses become when you close your eyes and feel everything around you. Phish brings you there. LIVE in concert.

No, there's not a "next Phish"... they were truly one of a kind. COMPLETELY different from the Dead. Took prog, humor, chops and rock to it's own place. Phish was absolutely nuts from the 90's through mid 2000's. They are way older now and it shows but still fun. Not the same though. Thank you Trey and thank you Phish for what you gave to the world!
I had that Jerry moment he was speaking of. I can never forget it. It was not his best show but he was staring deep into me. Trey, You should never blame yourself for people ethics or needs to come to a show just to get drugs of get high. That sir is not your responsibility. We saw it with the Dead for over 30 years and other bands. Paying music is a gift that being able to share with people who love the music and not just the drugs.

For me, the single most impressive thing about Phish is their professionalism. They have over 350 songs, not counting covers, and they rarely make mistakes or forget lyrics. I love The Dead too but you cant say that about Jerry, no matter what "level" he was on.
+mero40k Phish is pro like that. Jerry was pretty blunt in his feelings about lyrics tho, they weren't what drove him to play. They were necessary for song to have melody and voice. the Dead never played a song the same twice, twas part of the deal.

I guess all of this is before his arrest and subsequent rehabilitation. I saw Phish for the first time - 2 nights - in Huntsville this year. Pretty awesome and I'm a growing fan.
Don't get mad at what i'm about to say...BUT if you listen to Phish starting from the early days like around 92 or so and keep listening to them now you'll find that Trey has a lot of Hendrix influence in his playing. I'm not trying to say that he the next Hendrix but he does have more of a Hendrix influence in him than a Zappa one. Just listen to the way he uses feed back and stuff like that and you'll see what i mean.
Very true. Dweezil has a very similar style to Frank in his solos and is a great musician in his own right, but why do you say hes an asshole? hes always been polite and what not in my experience.
3:24 "i don't know what we are" with voice cracking and dumfounded look on his face....ha ha ha! odd that he would talk about bass player from 311 being influenced by Phish when it was always their guitarist that said he really appreciates Jerry Garcia and Trey's tone and techniques. 311 and Phish are practically polar opposites in sound and style. why would Trey not mention SCI, Lotus, Umphrey's, MOE, or STS9 as potential heir apparent to the jam band crown? not sure how he can legitimately regret building a party scene when that's what provided for their exponential growth in the early 90s. sure it get's out of control at times, but escape through mind alteration is key to discovering new views of the world and hopefully some ways to change it for the better! to me, Phish is a hybrid of musical concepts melded in hours long alchemical jam sessions striving to connect on a cosmic level with total strangers to share universal vibes of love via the mind meld. Trey eluded to that experience and I certainly had mine at Red Rocks in 1994. really seemed like they were mediums for extraterrestrial intelligence attempting to make "contact" through the music. that was some really clean liquid let me tell you! i still feel it listening to more recent shows as if the band has reconnected on that level as well. nice to know that tranquil space will always be there in this insanely chaotic world we live through. thanks to Trey, Fishman, Cactus, and Paige for keeping the magic alive!
I have seen Phish probably every time they came to Philly for the last 27 years and traveled to Pittsburg, New York & D.C. several times and I must say most shows were a blast! Recently I have seen them in the last five years and while there were some great moments it just wasn't the same which is ok, They influenced me musically for many years they are a great band! Thanks Guys!
I was flying coach to New Orleans for the jazz fest. I had long hair etc. The guy sitting next to me asked me if I was going to see the Phish and I told him No way man, I'm a deadhead and I hate the Phish . He was surprised . Turns out , he was Trey's father . LOL
I’ve had moments like that with Trey. At the famous Wipeout Worcester show in 98 I had chills up my spine the entire 2nd set. It was almost a religious experience. That whole party scene wound up happening with the Dead too. A chunk of the crowd became people that barely knew their music and just wanted to get f@cked up. It detracts from the show. It’s a lot better when the whole crowd are staunch fans

I get wanting to compare “this to that” it happened to phish with the dead. I get it’s natural to want that next thing that’s alike to this other thing. Phish will never be the dead, even though for me, I prefer phish. Goose may be the next thing in line like the question stated, it looks that way especially after the fall TAB, goose run and all these collaborations goose is doing. I did get to catch one of the taboose shows, goose is a fun band. I’m interested in seeing where it goes. For me, it’s just gonna be phish though and that’s just my opinion.
I never liked phish or trey until i seen him play with Further, then I became a fan of Trey. NO ONE can replace Garcia but i believe that Trey could fill in for Jerry very well. Trey plays music because he loves it and loves to perform for the people and in my eyes that is what matters. If the dead ever got back together again after the Chicago shows i would love to see Trey with them again, he brought that joy and excitement back to the show and it seems that Bobby and Phil really like him and his Guitar style
$53 million for 3 shows.... I think we'll see them again. I'm in no way saying it's all about the money but that's one hell of a payday for 3 nights work.
yea bill wants to go back out and so does bobby and mickey i'm pretty sure, and I think they could get Bruce and Trey back, and get someone to fill in for Phil. I know Phil does not want to tour anymore but we might see them play on the east coast once more, or I really hope they could do a mini fall tour but thats high hopes
i will definitely go and get it right this time. i went to a dead show to see Steve Miller in '91 and missed the steve miller set and me and my friend werent into the dead at all so we left! seriously kicking myself now david brinkman.
I doubt it will happen again. That was a special reunion centered around the 50th. I doubt any of these cats will make it to the 100th reunion. But, it was damn fun- and we'll always have the memories.
DID YOU KNOW THAT.... in 1985 Trey was a metal head, going to high school here in Watertown CT. Someone convinced him to see the Dead (at hartford civic center I think) and as he says "he was an overnight hippie". Think about that? A metal head to a hippie, over night. What an influence. Woooo CT!!
That comparison has been made many times and early Phish was often described as a combination of the Dead and Zappa. Songs like Fluffhead are extremely influenced by the Zappa sound. Trey has plenty of both Frank and Jerry in his playing but also plenty of his own thing. The fact that Trey is so versatile is more attributed to the Zappa influence than the Jerry influence, but certainly Trey often channels the spirit of Jerry Garcia. The jam section of Reba is Trey channelling Jerry.

Yeah, Phish doesn't sound like the Dead at all to me. Zappa, absolutely. The heavily composed 4 part atonal fugue is something the Dead never touched.

+mero40k Phish is pro like that. Jerry was pretty blunt in his feelings about lyrics tho, they weren't what drove him to play. They were necessary for song to have melody and voice. the Dead never played a song the same twice, twas part of the deal.

+Captain Rahn dude that's not true at all. jerry was heavily involved in crafting many of his most famous lyrics. i would say your statement applies to phish with lyrics/melody.
What!? Phish has been making mistakes and forgetting lyrics since day 1. I love them immensely, but there’s never been a time where phish was flawless.

I guess all of this is before his arrest and subsequent rehabilitation. I saw Phish for the first time - 2 nights - in Huntsville this year. Pretty awesome and I'm a growing fan.

Don't get mad at what i'm about to say...BUT if you listen to Phish starting from the early days like around 92 or so and keep listening to them now you'll find that Trey has a lot of Hendrix influence in his playing. I'm not trying to say that he the next Hendrix but he does have more of a Hendrix influence in him than a Zappa one. Just listen to the way he uses feed back and stuff like that and you'll see what i mean.

Very true. Dweezil has a very similar style to Frank in his solos and is a great musician in his own right, but why do you say hes an asshole? hes always been polite and what not in my experience.

odd that he would talk about bass player from 311 being influenced by Phish when it was always their guitarist that said he really appreciates Jerry Garcia and Trey's tone and techniques. 311 and Phish are practically polar opposites in sound and style. why would Trey not mention SCI, Lotus, Umphrey's, MOE, or STS9 as potential heir apparent to the jam band crown? not sure how he can legitimately regret building a party scene when that's what provided for their exponential growth in the early 90s. sure it get's out of control at times, but escape through mind alteration is key to discovering new views of the world and hopefully some ways to change it for the better!
to me, Phish is a hybrid of musical concepts melded in hours long alchemical jam sessions striving to connect on a cosmic level with total strangers to share universal vibes of love via the mind meld. Trey eluded to that experience and I certainly had mine at Red Rocks in 1994. really seemed like they were mediums for extraterrestrial intelligence attempting to make "contact" through the music. that was some really clean liquid let me tell you! i still feel it listening to more recent shows as if the band has reconnected on that level as well. nice to know that tranquil space will always be there in this insanely chaotic world we live through. thanks to Trey, Fishman, Cactus, and Paige for keeping the magic alive!

I have seen Phish probably every time they came to Philly for the last 27 years and traveled to Pittsburg, New York & D.C. several times and I must say most shows were a blast! Recently I have seen them in the last five years and while there were some great moments it just wasn't the same which is ok, They influenced me musically for many years they are a great band! Thanks Guys!
I was flying coach to New Orleans for the jazz fest. I had long hair etc. The guy sitting next to me asked me if I was going to see the Phish and I told him No way man, I'm a deadhead and I hate the Phish . He was surprised . Turns out , he was Trey's father . LOL
You're right I've been saying that to people all the time whenever they try to compare phish to the dead.
I’ve had moments like that with Trey. At the famous Wipeout Worcester show in 98 I had chills up my spine the entire 2nd set. It was almost a religious experience.
That whole party scene wound up happening with the Dead too. A chunk of the crowd became people that barely knew their music and just wanted to get f@cked up. It detracts from the show. It’s a lot better when the whole crowd are staunch fans

I get wanting to compare “this to that” it happened to phish with the dead. I get it’s natural to want that next thing that’s alike to this other thing. Phish will never be the dead, even though for me, I prefer phish. Goose may be the next thing in line like the question stated, it looks that way especially after the fall TAB, goose run and all these collaborations goose is doing. I did get to catch one of the taboose shows, goose is a fun band. I’m interested in seeing where it goes. For me, it’s just gonna be phish though and that’s just my opinion.

I never liked phish or trey until i seen him play with Further, then I became a fan of Trey. NO ONE can replace Garcia but i believe that Trey could fill in for Jerry very well. Trey plays music because he loves it and loves to perform for the people and in my eyes that is what matters. If the dead ever got back together again after the Chicago shows i would love to see Trey with them again, he brought that joy and excitement back to the show and it seems that Bobby and Phil really like him and his Guitar style
$53 million for 3 shows.... I think we'll see them again. I'm in no way saying it's all about the money but that's one hell of a payday for 3 nights work.
yea bill wants to go back out and so does bobby and mickey i'm pretty sure, and I think they could get Bruce and Trey back, and get someone to fill in for Phil. I know Phil does not want to tour anymore but we might see them play on the east coast once more, or I really hope they could do a mini fall tour but thats high hopes
i will definitely go and get it right this time. i went to a dead show to see Steve Miller in '91 and missed the steve miller set and me and my friend werent into the dead at all so we left! seriously kicking myself now david brinkman.

I doubt it will happen again. That was a special reunion centered around the 50th. I doubt any of these cats will make it to the 100th reunion. But, it was damn fun- and we'll always have the memories.

DID YOU KNOW THAT.... in 1985 Trey was a metal head, going to high school here in Watertown CT. Someone convinced him to see the Dead (at hartford civic center I think) and as he says "he was an overnight hippie". Think about that? A metal head to a hippie, over night. What an influence. Woooo CT!!

That comparison has been made many times and early Phish was often described as a combination of the Dead and Zappa. Songs like Fluffhead are extremely influenced by the Zappa sound. Trey has plenty of both Frank and Jerry in his playing but also plenty of his own thing. The fact that Trey is so versatile is more attributed to the Zappa influence than the Jerry influence, but certainly Trey often channels the spirit of Jerry Garcia. The jam section of Reba is Trey channelling Jerry.
