Some will discover a new passion that will be a blessing to them for the rest of their lives. Thanks Rick. I love the channel, especially the interviews with the behind the scenes folks.

I used to live a few miles from Deer Creek (don't know what it's called now, I call it the original name) which is an outdoor venue in central Indiana. It was always fun when the Grateful Dead or Phish would come and do three or four shows in a row for a whole week. Because I was so close to the campgrounds, we would always open up my house and let people shower, I would grill brats and burgers and not charge a penny for them, things like that. I only had one problem with one of the Phisheads and that was just because he had done too much Molly and was out of his mind. For the most part the fans are courteous, respectful and always appreciative. I had a giant oak tree in my front yard and I would have ten or fifteen Deadheads/Phisheads sitting under it with someone playing guitar, someone with bongos and my wife would bring out a pitcher of lemonade and ice water and we would just jam. I miss those days.

Page McConnell is just amazing with his vocal harmonies and keyboard work. Thing I love about PHiSH is that each of the 4 members is indispensable and irreplaceable. It really is a serendipitous union of the right people, and I have been a devoted fan since 1991.
Never really listened to Phish before, even though they were releasing music in "my era". Great song. As I listened to you describing how the melody works with the chord progression it got me thinking about one of my favourite courses from my undergraduate degree. In my 4th year at university, I had some extra credit space to take up so I decided to take a course offered by my school's music faculty for non-music students. It was call "Popular Music in Society". The course calendar described it as a survey of popular music. It sounded like an easy, fun course to lighten the load in my final semester of my final year. It was taught by the wife of the bass player from the band "Spirit of the West". On the first day of class about 50 people showed up. The professor walked in and the first words out of her mouth were "everybody is here for songwriting, correct?" She then described that the course work would be writing songs and performing them in front of the class. A little more than half the class got up and walked out. I decided to stay. Hey, I love this and never thought I liked or understood Phish. Thanks. What a great locale to have afternoon tea and play beautiful music. Learning more interesting things about music/bands I didn't know enough about 👍🎼☺️
Excellent commentary, Rick. Waste is one of Phish's most fundamental compositions, and a good example of deceptive simplicity. I owned White Crow Audio in Burlington, the studio where Phish recorded A Picture of Nectar, and Rift in the early nineties. Even back then, these four guys had already developed into formidable musicians. They maintained a strict rehearsal schedule and focused 100% on developing their music. It showed.
I'm not a huge Phish fan by any stretch, but I respect them immensely. This song and this version of Waste are absolutely incredible. Completely blown away by both and I love Rick teaching us about the musical aspects of it. Trey has also done a wonderful cover of It Makes No Difference from The Band, which is one of my favorite songs and covers ever.
I played this on January 25, 2008 from my truck. My girlfriend and I were in college and had been together for over a year. Drove to a park and my brother had started and he left when I said we were close. That’s where I purposed with this song in the background. 16 years and 2 kids later…we still dance to this song. Oh we did get married in March the same year.
As much as I love music, I love how you, Rick, help me understand how and why I appreciate it. I love Phish, and "waste" is one of my favorites. Your "WMTSG" is just fantastic. Love you, love your channel! Keep on rockin'!
PHISH???! Let me be one of the ones to say that I am absolutely thrilled beyond belief that you are incorporating Phish in your music series. I am a drummer and an avid musician and let me tell you that there is less than 1% of musicians that have the skill level and raw talent of Trey, Mike, John, and Page. They are all masters of their instruments.
What makes this channel great? Ridiculously awesome content provided by one Rick Beato. Now I'm going to be listening to some Phish for the next few days. What a beautiful chord progression.
So glad you picked a "slow" Phish song. They have such a (well deserved) rep as the king of the jam bands but their songwriting, nuance and complexity can get overlooked as a result. Thanks Rick!
Rick.. love your channel.. and love that you finally put a PHISH breakdown on here.. Lord.. there are soooo many you could do. Trey is probably one of or the most underrated on not known guitar player of all time….. like all the other members of Phish… all of them are “Masters of their domain”. So many styles.. “Jazz, PHUNK, classic rock, BLUES, classical, country, blue grass, and even Latin at times”. Haha….. please do another PHISH breakdown… NON acoustic .. so the world can see.. haha..
Yes, saw this live in Mexico two years ago and came back home and learned to cover it. Noticed the key change later for sure lol, I like it in standard myself. Another phenomenal story and breakdown Rick, thank you!
Thanks Rick!! A band that has been a part of my life in so many ways for the last 25 years and your channel a daily part of my life the last two and a life saver during 2020...and you are both are connected. Crazy. It’s like there is a string of goodness that travels through people I gravitate towards and they all end up being connected somehow. Thank you for this.
NJ guy here Old friend in Aspen let me know how much he was enjoying your videos. I’m very happy to be on board. My guitar is dusted off and I’m happily playing along. You’ve got great taste
Buy their first album “Junta” I’ll check back in in 10 years after you’ve spent thousands of dollars following them around the country all summer/fall.
Oh man. In the last year I've picked up my guitar again for the first time in decades. I've watched a number of your videos and to see you appreciating Phish and Trey just made my day. Thanks!!
Many of the bands that have appeared on here I'm not a fan of at all, BUT the amount of time, effort, and resources that go into the music created HAS to be respected. So although many of these bands are not my cup of tea, I have a huge amount of respect for what they have done.
You are SO right! I’m not the biggest Phish fan. When I tell people “I’m not the biggest fan” all I mean is, I’m not a fan of that band, player, singer, or genre but I ALWAYS respect & enjoy the breakdown Rick does of their immense talents, & he is an awesome player! Now if I say: “I hate this Band guy or gal” that means in my opinion they’re overrated & or have as much talent as I do! I’m not a bad player actually but to be GREAT? An artist needs to be so above my level regardless if I’d practice 10 hours a day! I’d never be* as good.
@@mikeaustin4138 I would agree, I have always been proud of being able to pick things out of songs and hear every instrument individually while also hearing the band as a whole. Rick's WMTSG series sheds a TON of light on things that I didn't even realize were there. Songs like "Black" that I swore I could hear every part of. I missed the piano even though it's obvious that it's there. What I'm getting at is that there will be bands that although I'm not a fan of them, the amount of effort that goes into their art is something that I respect and admire about them, even though, like I said, I wouldn't be a fan of their music.
There are a few aspects that always brings joy to my heart and I play, and sing this song is amazing the way it progresses. Reason it sounds so great is the amount of practice and times they've played it. A dream is true....
I’d like to think that with the advancement of Artificial Intelligence that some day in the future everyone will have a Rick Beato app on their phone that can analyse their favourite tunes. I always find a new appreciation for the songs you do, Rick, and I’m often driven to go and pick up my guitar again. So thank you!
Just wondering if Rick ever talked about Phish and here we are. I used to see them play at JC Jazz's in Plattsburgh NY in '92. Got to stand a couple feet from them while they jammed through the Real Book. Totally inspiring moments.
Trey has excellent time because he actually started as a drummer. In the live show he plays drums any time they bring Henrietta out from behind the tubs to front the band. It's also why a lot of his compositions are rhythmically interesting as well as sonically. And if you're going to break down a song, please make it something like that (rhythmically and sonically interesting). Something like 'It's Ice' or 'Guyute' would be incredible. Keep up the excellent work!
Thank you for talking about Phish! Please do more, perhaps You Enjoy Myself, Run Like an Antelope, or Stash - any of their funky rocking stuff. There is PLENTY to choose from.
Trey is one of those people that seem to have an endless amount of musical creativity, a musical savant! He's someone that understands music in ways most of us never will but he knows how to translate it for us when need be! I could also listen to him talk all day! I absolutely love the BBC interview he did where he discusses what it was like at the end. He talks about the group of fans that he would see at every show and how he hopes they knew it was time to be done as well. Anyway, great episode as always Mr Beato!
Beautiful. I had no idea you worked with Trey. That's so cool that you get every subtlety between Trey and Page, and the songwriting. I hope you have been able to see them during their summer and fall tours this year to see where the band is now. They are as harmonious and tight as ever.
They never get enough credit. People write them off as a jam band. The structure of their stuff is great. They do silly stuff but I like to think it's because they can.
So happy to see Rick hit the jam scene for this great series. Billy Breathes is definitely my favorite Phish album, and Waste a top 3 song from them. I learned it on guitar years ago.
This was a real treat Rick. Thank you so much. So many great Phish songs but this has always been one of my favorites too. BB is such a killer record. Man, this duet version is really wonderful.
Wow! Rick, I was the guy in the comments that suggested Trey for an interview, and I said do you appreciate what he does, well okay! I had no idea! Not only do you know that but actually worked with him, cool 😎🎉
Interesting that I never knew you had worked with Trey. I know that was during his period where I think he lost his way a bit creatively from the drug use. I'd be curious to know your thoughts on how he has changed since he got clean. As a long time Phish fan I can tell he just looks so happy and positive now in his creations.
I originally grew up in Vermont and Phish was a huge influence on me musically back in the 90s (prompting me to procure a Ross compressor and a couple TS9's thinking I could sound remotely like Trey lol), and I still see them when I can, my aunt used to live across the field from the Barn there in the Underhill area and I would hear noodling long into the wee hours many nights. Thanks for this Rick, in my opinion Billy Breathes is really an amazing showcase of brilliant songwriting, jam-band or not, I think its sort of their Sgt Peppers, as they were absolutely firing on all cylinders at that point( folks who saw them live during this time almost unanimously agree). Knowing your history with Trey its super cool to hear you break this down brother, thanks!
@@joshevans3452 Lol no worries, to each their own bro, I love Rift, its an amazing concept album. BB was to me their more rock-orientated songwriting masterpiece but Rift is easily my second favorite album from that era, followed by PON, and most likely overall
I was at a downtown Toledo bar last night and 2 guys playing acoustic guitars played this song. I never heard it before- I asked them the name of the song, and haven't gotten it out of my head since.
Rick - thanks for covering Phish. I envy the fact that you got to spend some time with them, They have always been one of my favs. A lot of people don't know that Phish's following was a large as the Grateful Dead's, just a lot more laid back (if that is possible.)
Rick, time and time again, your knowledge, enthusiasm and keen ear for detail find a way to give me goosebumps. At least one goosebump moment per "What Makes This Song Great?", guaranteed!
Phish is awesome, this is a great little rendition. Could you also show these people trey's jamming and shredding skills? Show your subs just how good they can be plugged in and jamming?

One of my favorite Phish songs. I just caught the duet video the other day, it was certainly a treat. You manage to cover a lot of songs that I really like and it’s always a treat to hear your insight when you break down the song structures.
Nice! Phish has never gotten the critical acclaim they deserve. Anyone who wants to hear a good cross-section of their music can't go wrong with "A Live One."
Thanks so much Rick! That made my day and I will always see you you in a new light. My love for Phish and guitar are my Rock. Waste is truly a great song and some new faces will hear that! Well done!

You might like Billy Breathes too, if you enjoy this song.
The whole “December” album with is worth listening to, if you like this.
Phish is one of the more unique and interesting sounding bands for sure! I didn't expect a WMTSG on them, but I am excited.
Haha….. please do another PHISH breakdown… NON acoustic .. so the world can see.. haha..
If ever there was a “satisfying” album, this is surely it. Loved to hear the analysis and the story of working with Trey.
This song was the last dance at my wedding. Gets me every time. Love phish, one of the best bands.
Yes, saw this live in Mexico two years ago and came back home and learned to cover it. Noticed the key change later for sure lol, I like it in standard myself. Another phenomenal story and breakdown Rick, thank you!
Billy Breathes is such an inspired album! That opening track "Free" had me hooked with those chord changes!
I’d never heard of Phish. Just bought the album. You should point this out to blockers
Enjoy!
Blockers are Fokkers
Blockers don't care.
Just bought it too...!
Buy their first album “Junta”
I’ll check back in in 10 years after you’ve spent thousands of dollars following them around the country all summer/fall.
Thank god. Don’t know what these bands what have done without your respect
@@nlgliarmis503 I know huh? They should have an altar with my comment on it and just..thank it every morning.
I went down the Phish rabbit hole around 1996 and never came back up.
same
Same here - saw my first show in 97 when I was 17 and haven't stopped since. Even flew to Florida (from WA) for Big Cypress NYE 2000 - that was crazy.
@@PYITE314 looks we are the same age.
Same... then got to see em first in fall 97 at the Nutter Center in Dayton! Been chasing it ever since!
That sound like my dad
Love coming back to this one! I would love to see a long form interview with you and Trey! Fingers crossed!
OK it's no longer a hypothetical: I will click on anything Rick Beato puts out.
I've always admired Phish's amazing musicianship, but I don't dig the jam band genre. That said, this is a really pretty song.
I’ve been doing that for years! He’s always interesting!
I truly loved Shine...and the tour that supported it. Martin made a pro model for him at that time too! Glad he cleaned himself up. All the love
I always thought rick hated phish LMFAO this makes me happy
I’d like to think that with the advancement of Artificial Intelligence that some day in the future everyone will have a Rick Beato app on their phone that can analyse their favourite tunes.
I always find a new appreciation for the songs you do, Rick, and I’m often driven to go and pick up my guitar again. So thank you!
I didn’t expect to see Phish on this channel as I was scrolling through my feed. Those boys from Vermont are by far my favorite band.
Says the guy with a "Yes" album cover avatar! :-D
First time listening to anything Phish. Wow, so good. Thank you.
This absolutely made my night. So happy to see these guys on here.
Haven't listened to alot of Phish but I enjoyed this
It's funny to me that when they're playing it doesn't sound like the Beatles, but when Rick's playing, it really does. Subtle stuff.
My exact thoughts.
My wife and I chose this as our wedding song 20 years ago, and my love for her and this song live on today stronger than ever.
3:25 - yes Rick, you nailed it here with this description. Very McCartney (as in "Maybe I'm Amazed" ) chord progression.
Beautiful. I had no idea you worked with Trey. That's so cool that you get every subtlety between Trey and Page, and the songwriting. I hope you have been able to see them during their summer and fall tours this year to see where the band is now. They are as harmonious and tight as ever.
Never been a Phish fan. If Rick is into it, I'll at least give it a shot.
I wasn’t either until I heard Billy Breathes. I think it would be time well spent.
They never get enough credit. People write them off as a jam band. The structure of their stuff is great. They do silly stuff but I like to think it's because they can.
The Story of the Ghost is a great album too. Enjoy!
All I know about Phish is that old AxCx song about them called "Beating Up Hippies for Their Drugs at a Phish Concert."
Yeah, me neither, this song was wonderful to discover
So happy to see Rick hit the jam scene for this great series. Billy Breathes is definitely my favorite Phish album, and Waste a top 3 song from them. I learned it on guitar years ago.
Hell yeah man. My dad went to UVM in the 80s and saw them all the time at Nectar’s in Burlington. Love Phish
My wife walked down the aisle to this song. It's very special to me.
Free is an excellent cut off this album as well. And whatever is being played on Bliss (I believe banjo and bass) is wonderful!
And Taste - that tune is amazing!
I believe its a 12 string Martin on Bliss, a couple of them doubletracked, panned left and right
Free is one of my favs
Bliss is one of my favorite Phish songs! So sublime.
This was a real treat Rick. Thank you so much. So many great Phish songs but this has always been one of my favorites too. BB is such a killer record. Man, this duet version is really wonderful.
I pressed play, saying, "waste... waste... waste..." and lo! This makes me so happy!
Wow! Rick, I was the guy in the comments that suggested Trey for an interview, and I said do you appreciate what he does, well okay! I had no idea! Not only do you know that but actually worked with him, cool 😎🎉
Same with me! Wow!
I was recommended vids of the trey guy this morning, I'd never heard of them before and now you're doing this? The great A.I GOD
This Trey guy is where it's at.
He has been streaming free (live) on Fridays at 8pm. I know its on Twitch, but might be elsewhere aslo
@@mattflickinger8151 Nope....just on Twitch unless someone is boomeranging it...but since it's free i don't think anyone is doing that.
Waste- my all-time favorite of all of phishs' ballads...thanks R!
Interesting that I never knew you had worked with Trey. I know that was during his period where I think he lost his way a bit creatively from the drug use. I'd be curious to know your thoughts on how he has changed since he got clean. As a long time Phish fan I can tell he just looks so happy and positive now in his creations.
Man this version of Waste is geniunely beautiful
Sorry to one of "those" guys but Rift is really more of their Sgt. Peppers given that it is a thematic composition.
Trey is the best. I don't listen to much Phish these days, but I'm learning Waste on ukulele and found this video.
I grew up in Burlington and saw them at Nectar's more than once. The guys in Phish are amazing musicians!
Rick - thanks for covering Phish. I envy the fact that you got to spend some time with them, They have always been one of my favs. A lot of people don't know that Phish's following was a large as the Grateful Dead's, just a lot more laid back (if that is possible.)
Was hoping for "You Enjoy Myself" but this is still a cool song. I really enjoy the more progressive work they do.
One of their best songs...it's actually different styles in one song.
Only problem is Ricks video would end up being like 3 days long...
@@michaelsingJiuJitsu amd the problem is.......
Check out the YEM from the 6/11/94 Red Rocks show. Absolutely insane.
we can hope
Rick, time and time again, your knowledge, enthusiasm and keen ear for detail find a way to give me goosebumps. At least one goosebump moment per "What Makes This Song Great?", guaranteed!
Phish is awesome, this is a great little rendition. Could you also show these people trey's jamming and shredding skills? Show your subs just how good they can be plugged in and jamming?
Dope to see you talk about phish! Waste will always remind me of my friend mike who sadly passed away in March 2010. I’ve always loved waste and it’s a treat everytime I see it.
Trey= pretty dang good. Trey+Brocolli Rob=God tier. They really need to do an encore album together.
So glad to Phish here. Been watching Beato videos for years, been seeing Phish live since 1993!
YES! Trey is a guitar GOD and he doesn't get enough credit.
What? Trey gets tons of praise critically, and is borderline worshipped by corporate hippies
Sad how right you are
Trey isn’t a god...he’s a fucking JEDI🤘🎶🤓been following this band since Big Cypress!
Especially his stuff from the 90s. He was at his peak. Even today though he rips.
@@lordmanshaft1112 but he is never on the lists of "the greats", which I find insane
Personally, I think Trey is easily in the top 10
I love the open terrace (or I don't know how it is called in English ),where the musicians play, the wooden floor and al ot of space and air. And the nature around, of course. I adore you, Rick.
Cool. Haven't listened to Billy Breathes in forever. This takes me back.
I love this series so much! Rick teaches you a lot of useful music theory stuff but at the same time shows you how to listen and appreciate music
thanks for getting Phish on here.
Thanks so much Rick! That made my day and I will always see you you in a new light. My love for Phish and guitar are my Rock. Waste is truly a great song and some new faces will hear that! Well done!
What a nice surprise today, PHISH!!!
I’ve been patiently licking my chops waiting to see Phish land in this series.
Beautifully done Rick.
Thank you for it
The was my wedding song. Some of the family were giving my wife and I side-eye when they announced it, but I could give a f***.
Great choice, the lyrics are so pertinent.
We had a bluegrass band play at our wedding and I made them learn this for our first dance.
This is a perfect wedding song, your family has no taste in music if you got the side eye aka stink eye, over this!
It was our first dance at our wedding
It was mine too. I miss my wife who passed. It was her favorite along with Strange Design.
