Painting our Boat with Powdered Pennies! | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 61

  • Horror stories abound across the interwebs about Coppercoat. We've read and watched just about all of them! If you look, there are a ton of rave reviews out there, too.
Sometimes, you just need to go with your gut. Our instincts told us that if we followed the process correctly, Coppercoat was going to work great for us. By doing it ourselves we controlled all the variables, and could ensure it was applied correctly. Or, at least to the best of our ability. ;)
Join us on our three-day bender as we paint 3 coats of barrier coat and 4 coats of Coppercoat in a nearly nonstop whirlwind of productivity!
    Hope you enjoy,
    Kirk & Lauren

Oh shoot we forgot the spots under the jackstands! 🤦‍♀️ Juuust kidding. To do these spots we had to wait until the Coppercoat cured on the rest of the hull, then ask the boatyard to move the stands. This is called reblocking; yards often charge for this service (ours included one reblocking for free). Then we repeat the process all over again - scrape, sand, barrier coat, Coppercoat; fortunately it all goes much quicker when it’s just a handful of square feet to do.

thanks for clearing that up I was worried lol. It would be nice to know how much is haul out , reblocking, I think cost like that our something you don't think about and could really hurt my budget. I have been watching you guys from the start. My girlfriend was so mad when things went wrong on the build of aluminum frame and she cried with yall. I want to thank yall for showing us how we can also live this life.

One of the things that I always liked about Interlux 2000e barrier coat was that it came in gray and white so you could intersperse the colors on every coat and easily see where you had been.

Half December Britican was hauled out to redo the CoperCoat (CC). On the day of application of the CC 5 people were working for 6,5 hours straight to make a good product. Yes you need 5-6 people to do the hull of a 56ft boat.
After the latest application of CC Britican is almost 1.5 knots faster, because CC is sooooo SMOOTH after sanding it down.
After laying in a marina for three weeks we set her out for a nice sail from Grenada (Le Phare Blue) to Martinique. A nice 70% sail, 30% motor passage On that sail we reached the hullspeed of that Oyster 56, 11,9 knots on a beam reach (port tack) with 27kn apparent.
Then we island hopped around Grenada and St. Vincent & Grenadine for about 2 months. I left the boat just hours before all the shit happened.
At that time the boat was splashed on 12 Dec and last time I did a swim around was 26 Feb, not a single barnacle only some green slime, easily wiped with a scrub sponge.
Am I allowed to put the link to Britican in this post?

You can use the adhesive side of packing tape to roll the rollers and get rid of any loose fibers, before you start rolling your epoxy. An Extension rod will let you do more painting with less back bending, using your arm muscles. On a hot day, you can keep the products in a iced cooler down to slow the curing time...

Great job! When my wife and I paint our 45 foot hull she goes ahead and pours paint over her head just to get paint all over her to begin with! She's really cute when she paints!
I also use a sharpie to mark numbers on the blue tape at about 2 foot intervals so I can keep up with where I've already painted! It really helps.

I have to stop and compliment u guys.....I have watched a few of your vids because u keep popping up on my TH-cam and I am glad you do. I have refitted 3 boats in the last 5 years and it is rewarding as well as a real drain......Obviously I enjoy doing the work or I wouldnt have done it with my last 3 boats. I am always doing the work by myself which makes me jealous that u guys are such a great team. I am impressed with your intelligence to be able to learn...retain...and apply for all of your repairs electrical...paint...etc. I am impressed at how well u guys get along...you are such genuine people and very even keel ...no pun intended....This last job in this video was a massive undertaking.....now you know why boat yards charge so much for this kind of work. We watched you learn...make mistakes....and then finally conquer. I am sure u guys were exhausted after this job and needed to crack a couple of cold ones for a few days. Ps.....I listed to the same music when I work on my boat.....I heard it in the background.......on my Pandora I select "slightly Stupid " radio...and it plays that cool ska vibe that helps me through the sanding....grinding....painting....etc. You guys deserve a nice long adventure in your boat. Congrats on your success so far!!!!

Nice meticulous job as usual! There are some steel stands/frames you can get that allow you to support the hull on the keel and then on the sides above the waterline so you don’t have to patch on for the Jack stands ( you see these type supports on marine railway systems and in Europe were full steel frames are more common). I would not worry about removing the barrier coat , if it’s well stuck on it never needs to come off , same as the copper cost , it should never need to come off and by the way it’s a good barrier cost too!
    Great job ! Cheers Warren

FWIW when we apply VC 17 (similar to coppercote, powdered copper mixed into the coating then applied) we mix it in a clean 2 litre plastic coke bottle. The cap keeps the paint from drying and before each fill of the roller tray we give the paint a really good shake-up to keep the copper mixed in well..... You might try it next time.... (or when you paint the spots covered by the pads).
