We’re a Sailboat Again! | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 33

  • We put the mast back up and we’re pretty dang stoked about it. The electrical is reconnected, the boom goes back on, and Kirk takes a stab at tensioning our standing rigging himself. Soulianis is finally feeling more like a sailboat again.
    Hope you enjoy,
    Lauren & Kirk

    I heard it was the "dazed brown dog" but what do I know, I have a cat. Capt. J COOL videos! I am an old man now late 50's and terribly cynical, I don't even trust water, however, seeing you two (fighting scenes deleted or not shown) it gives me hope for the world. You two are just cute. Stay safe!

    My Dad taught me the bowline when I was a kid. He said make a loop and the tree is the bottom of the loop, Then the tail end is the rabbit. The rabbit comes out of the hole, runs around the tree and goes back down in his hole. Stuck with me for life!.

    19,000 views and only 1,900 likes? Something must be wrong here because who wouldn't like the combination of sailing AND skiing in the same episode! Crazy, I say...CRAZY! Another great video and I expect that it won't be long before we see Soulianis moving with the power of the wind only. Btw, fired up my 150hp Evinrude last week and finally got out on the water for the first time this year! :-)

    This had been a fabulous series of videos as you travelled south. I'm in the UK and it's really opened my eyes to what an incredible and beautiful continent North America is. The guys on Ran Sailing and their voyage north did another great series up there. Really fantastic videos and not something I was expecting from a sailing channel. Love the humour and the being honest about the learning your getting along the way, helps me learn as well. Off to do some work on my mast this week, so will keep your tuning tips in mind. Thanks again for your great work.

    Nice to see you guys back in the game. Your pilgrimage south convinced me to take the extra time and go down the St. Lawrence and the east coast. By the time I get to do this I'll be retired and an extra couple weeks won't be a problem. I've done the east coast ICW with frequent offshore legs before and I'd rather that than endlessly motoring a small diesel on brown, polluted rivers. It'll be great to see your upcoming destinations (west coast Florida ICW, Tortugas, Keys, Bimini, Bahamas etc.) through new eyes.

    You can tension your rig without a gauge by standing up and deflecting the various shrouds and stays at shoulder height by these amounts: Head stay and back stay 1 inch max. Upper shrouds 1 inch max. Intermediate shrouds 1 to 2 inches max. Forward lower 2 to 3 inches max and aft lowers 3 to 4 inches max. By the way, you have had your boat out of the water when the centerboard issue came about - you should know that every time you pull a boat out of the water you need to check the propeller shaft flange to transmission flange spacing. You will need a feeler gauge with a .003 feeler. The max space at any point between the two flanges should be no more than .003 inches. To change the distance and make the spacing at .003 or less, you have to adjust the engine mount bolts to raise or lower the engine so the spacing is correct. The reason for this is that the hull changes shape when you have the boat out of the water versus in the water. Running the engine with more than .003 spacing at the shaft flange can cause a strain on the shaft where the flange is on it - worst case scenario is that the shaft will break close to the flange - which I have seen happen. The best option is to buy a flexible coupling. Once it is in place you won't need to worry about the spacing and you will likely get less vibration.

  • @nightfury1318
    @nightfury1318 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason why you are getting the squealing feedback is the constant cycle if audio from radio #1s speaker going back thru radio #2s microphone causing that squealing. The garbled audio is from radio#1 being to close to radio #2. Handheld probably puts out 5W and the boats radio puts out a lot more and will over deviate the other radios receiver. To much for it to handle. Other then that sounds like they are working good. You do need to make sure your SWR/ Standing Wave Ratio is within specs for the ships radio. What can cause it to be off is loose connections. Incorrect length antenna or a break or sharp bend in the coax. Your antenna looks to be the right length from your video. 1:1 ratio is what you want. Your instructions might say anything under 3:1 is good. Might also say the radio will cut the power down if the ratio is 3:1 or higher to prevent the finals from burning up.
