Not a DIY guy, but was researching the various types of vinyl siding, and I found this video extremely informative...so much so that I'm upping the thickness of what I want the contractor to install. Greatly appreciate your insights! Thank you! Subscribed and hit the notification bell.
Hello everyone thank you for stopping by and checking out this video, good or bad please tell me what you liked or dislike or even what I could change to improve the video's thank you again SteveOOO
I am really enjoying all this info and the video about insulation. I am not a DIYer but need to choose a vinyl siding product and installer. This info helps ALOT!!
What a great video on paint research. I’m redoing my parents room and i was going back and forth on which primer and paint to choose from. Ultimately I went with the behr marquee since I used their staining paint this summer and I’ve been very happy with the quality of the durability of the product so figured if their fence staining is that good then their interior paint must be good as well- as the testa here prove it 👍🏻
Menards is the best if you're a diy. Pay attention to the Clearance and the 11% off. As a one-time customer, ABC Supply will give you the "A" price list. At that price, you should just sit outside of ABC and wait for the truck with all the ladders and ask for a card.
Just compared costs between Menards and ABC for CertainTeed siding exact same products and Menards was a little cheaper before the rebate. With the rebate I'll get a good chunk of change to spend at Menards on other projects. You also mentioned adding foam but up here in Michigan all I see is XPS and I am concerned that is too much of a vapor barrier then EPS and will just keep moisture in the walls since my vapor barrier should be facing in.
Yup! I do have a 1970's home, and the aluminium sidling is got to go, I will also like the fact that we can get it whole sale, but I like the insultation sidling even better, I am in Georgia, can you tell me of a whole sale place to get what I am asking for?? and I am glad that I came across your show, very informative for a layman home owner.
I recommend rigid foam board over insulated siding. You can tape the seams, sealing the air envelope. Gives you a smooth surface to hang the siding. Plus it's usually cheaper material cost and faster Install
@@highmarkroof Thanks you for getting back to me, I have done so much research on how to fix this concern that I have with the home, without taken down the whole house and walls and keeping all in a good price. thanks
I have shake siding that needs a lot of work. I think those shakes maybe at least 40 years. No insulation in my house. Should I change shakes to vinyl siding
Hello! This has been a great video and resource for me. Thank you! I had a question. I would prefer NOT to purchase from Lowes or Home Depot. However, the ABC Supply website says "As a distributor, we sell only products to licensed, professional contractors in the communities we serve." Are they going to give me a hard time if I try to go to one of the local ABC distributors to purchase materials? Do they check for a contractor account? How do I get around this? Seems a bit ridiculous. Maybe they don't stand by this rule depending on the site/location?
My home is a 1925 9ld colonial. Worth more than 500k..what type of wrap should ..I use it has vinyl siding from 1984..thinking of re doing but now after watching this video..am not sure about redoing with vinyl..Any Suggestions
I loved this video, great information. I was originally looking at engineered wood, KWP Eco-Side but now your bringing me back to the idea of vinyl. Question for you though, what are your thoughts on dark colours for vinyl? I am looking at doing a dark grey or almost black siding. I am concerned about two things, the potential for it to heat up and warp, and also for it to fade. Any thoughts on this? I am currently looking at ABTCO Timbercrest Plus Colorfast double 4 in there "manor" color.
I just had a garage built in 2020 and had vinyl siding on it. BIGGEST MISTAKE I EVER MADE. Hail treated it like paper. This wasn't cheap box store siding.
I just contacted my local ABC Supply and you were right they will sell to the general public. I do want to put the best choice for the exterior to make this house air sealed. It will be my first investment property and I want it to be right. Do you provide services to give a material checklist for new construction? I want to buy my own materials to make sure things are done with best quality.
I will get back to you in 2 weeks and if not please reach out to me I will post some helpful info on letsdiymyhome.com but im on vacation at this time and the docs your looking for are at the office....
@@letsdiymyhome I hope you had a good vacation. I tried to sign up for the forums on your website so I can provide my house plans for a material list from you and it does not email me so I can do the confirmation
1 1/2 is pretty thick r9 may be overkill for a wall. What about zip boards. I guess if I had to make it work I would use purlins or cover with osb. I have used 1/2 but you just grab 21/2 nails vs 2 in nails.
One mistake I noticed you made on the video. It was the comparison of home depot siding to one of your suppliers. You said home depots carton had 1 square in the carton. That would be 12 pieces. It said on the spec. Sheet that it had 24 pieces in the carton. So when comparing your supplier and home depot it is wrong. Your comparing your suppliers 12 pieces to home depots 24 pieces. Home depot is actually cheaper in cost. But you also have to take into consideration that they are not the same thickness. Some good Info. Keep it up
My friend your not correct with the statement of heat loss any time you add some R-Value to the siding/wall it does in fact help some with heat loss, The backer board really is about keeping the panel straight not looking so cheap. As for self ventilation? who the hell says it does that? you must install house wrap/drainage plane to control moisture. Make it a great day thank you for the comments
@@letsdiymyhome according to Joe Lstibureck of building science corp, the foam backed insulated vinyl siding doesn’t work well for insulation as it’s insulating capabilities are overstated. According to Fine Homebuilding Podcast, benefit of uninsulated vinyl siding is its self venting capability which makes it air dry behind it naturally, and this quality is undone by having a foam backer. It also attracts bugs under it. They both say insulated vinyl siding is a scam for the above reasons and doesn’t make sense. However, it is harder and straighter due to the foam behind it like you said. I’m no expert thought. Good day!

Today its hard to say do to hyperinflation I would talk to a realtor. if you have Vinyl or masonite siding then your fine but anything else I would question it. Again this is my 2 cents.. Going form vinyl to steel or LP/Hardi can up the value. All this depends on location and many other factors this is why I say talk to a realtor. I hope this helps

Great video, lots of information to help with siding our home. Thank you!
Great info, thanks. Is siding today less likely to attract mold and mildew than that 20 or so years ago?
Thanks for posting this helpful information!👍
current lumber prices have dictated siding option. one wholesale supply is now charging $60 more per box now

Dont see much difference between dutch lap and lap board. Maybe its more obvious in a big space.
Can you install vinyl siding over LP Smart siding?
