FALLOUT (2024) EPISODE 3 REACTION - WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!? - FIRST TIME WATCHING - REVIEW

- Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to the Fallout (2024) show.
On episode 3 of Fallout we got an insane encounter in the Wasteland! This episode brough Maximus, The Ghoul and Lucy face to face with a Gulper. And boy did that thing look absolutely nuts!
Fallout (2024) is the gripping new Amazon Prime Video series based on the iconic video game. Starring Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, and Kyle MacLachlan, with visionary direction by Jonathan Nolan, this adaptation brings the beloved game to life in thrilling fashion.
Jonathan Nolan did such a great job bringing this world to life. As newcomers we thought the exposition was delivered in a very simple yet effective manner. The cinematography looked absolutely stunning and the set design is truly out of this world. Lucy is such a magnetic character. Her charisma and values create a stark contrast once she ventures into the real world giving us a fresh take on the fish out of water trope.
Ella Purnell's portrayal of a resilient survivor, Walton Goggins as a cunning antagonist bring depth to this chaotic new world. Jonathan Nolan's direction ensures a cinematic experience, masterfully blending intense drama with the dark humor and iconic elements of the Fallout universe. The show excels in both storytelling and visual spectacle, making it a standout addition to the genre.
We hope you enjoy our reaction, discussion, commentary and review as we delve into the themes and topics that make this show so enjoyable to us.

@OfficialMediaKnights one day guys I'd love if you could react to a little film called Empire of the Sun. Directed by Speilberg, starring Christian Bale age 13, John Malkovich and Ben Stiller. It's barely been reacted to on the TH-cams and it's incredible. Sorry if I posted this already my phone isn't happy.
Pleased at least
😻😸😻
@bentucker2301 Thank you for the suggestion! Adding it to our list 😄
Yo, I think you were spot on about the axtolotl. You'll see why later.
Oh hi 😂🎉@@ScarriorIII
"Thou shalt get sidetracked by every goddamn bullshit that comes your way" is basically Fallout in a nutshell 😂
Ahahah that line was just purely iconic!
yep a direct nudge to the gameplay where the main story gets an afterthought ALMOST immediatly haha
Fallout and TES games conundrum.
But there is a homeless little boy in Grayditch that needs my help!
tehehehehHAHAHAHAHAHAHLOLOLILZZZZZZ omgggZzzz you just be like the first person to realize that! 🍪 here.
The water chip failing is actually a callback to the original Fallout game; the water chip breaking is why the player is the first person allowed to leave the vault since it was first sealed.
Also it's worth pointing out that all the PipBoy and computer interfaces we see do match the games, specifically the 3D games. The PipBoy has always been the in-game "explanation" for the interface.
Honestly cannot wait to delve into the game! Loving the lore we’ve gotten through the show. We are sold!
@@OfficialMediaKnightsthe water chip prop is also screen accurate to the game 😯
@@OfficialMediaKnights Gaming Channel coming?
In this show the water chip breaking is also chosen as a breaking point. I like how it was done.
This show hits so much harder once you realise all three protagonists are missing their family.
Yes, Cooper is the vault boy. Love how they made his character like that
Loved the way they slowly revealed that throughout this episode! Yikes! He’s not too happy about that 😬
@@OfficialMediaKnights Making him a Ghoul was a very smart idea, no one would really recognize him. I believe in the first episode Lucy and her dad was watching one of his old movies.. Cooper was the vault poster boy.. He is pretty much the main character in the whole franchise now lol
But the vault boy had blond hair. Cooper has dark hair.
@@corpusD I would argue that his is a prototype for a vault boy. A protoboy.
Not only that, but the brilliant way they weave in his personal story behind it all...fantastic.
The writing in this show is very smart. To add to your comments at the end of the video about Maximus doing things different then Titus, When Maximus says "Fck, Fck, Fck" he says it as a reaction of "my squire is in trouble I got to help" vs Titus where he says it as a "I need to save myself". Its just another way to write how differently Max is doing things while also making it funny
Can sort of understand Maximus' thinking. If he reports Titus' death, absolute best case is he's called back to base and has to get in line to be a squire for another knight when a position opens up and chances are that knight is as much of a tool as Titus was.
Worst case; he is strung up by his lungs for failing his duty and didn't protect his lord! We've already seen the Brotherhood is pretty brutal and unforgiving.
But even i the best case, he still goes back to being a squire which means he doesn't get a suit of armour and he doesn't get to be a hero.
So his only option in his mind is, keep pretending to be Titus; find the artifact that the Brotherhood desperately wants; and hope that the Brotherhood is happy enough with him for finding the prize that they overlook his deception and allow him to continue as a knight due to his bravery.
this!👆👆👆 also, regarding leaving his power armour unattended, if you remember, it was broke as hell after it was "modified" by the ghoul. at best it was difficult to manoeuvre, but it may well have become inoperable without the repairs that he was leaving it to get done! with no-one to keep watch he had no other option.
You got the right direction, but it is more easy. Dead knight and Squire is alive means: squire had failed. There is no excuse. The squires duty is to die first. In medival times, squires have only one honour; die for the knight or face your punishment for you failure with honour. Thats what Titus expected from Max. Max had no other choise but hope for their thankfullness when he bring the target and Show mercy. Normally, they will not. They would hang him as a hero.
@@tanjafischer6634 Squires have never been like that in history... They fought with and assisted them, they supported their knight on and off the battlefield. They were not however expected to die before his knight nor were they usually severely punished / killed. Easy to make connections when you just make shit up!
@@mrcroob8563 even if its not historically true it is game lore true, if your squire survives and the knight dies the squire is to be executed. it's why he lies.
@@loganblevenson Where is that ever stated? I've played all of em, unless it's some obscure fallout tactics crap? Not trying to be a dick I'm genuinely curious.
It's subtle, but I love how on ep.2, Knight Titus was running away screaming "Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck", whereas in here, we see Maximus actually rushing in to save Thaddeus while saying the exact same thing.
Yeah, Maximus sends Thaddus to safety and then rushed to help, while Titus first sent Maximus ahead as bait and then ran away.
A direct, deliberate reversal that's meant to show his real character under pressure. It's a pity a lot of people don't pick up on that and keep thinking he's evil and selfish.
If a Knight dies, and his squire does not, then it's the squires fault for not laying down his life for the Knight. Even to give him a few seconds in any situation for the Knight to survive. So he gets put to death for failing his Knight. He had to lie.
Ari, I fully agree with your assessment of Maximus.
It's hard to play the straight man opposite a wise-cracking ghoul-gunslinger and to a powerpuff girl (made of "sugar, spice, and everything nice").
Ha! Ella would actually kill it as a powerpuff girl!
You 2 are my favorite reaction/review channel. When you react to something you look at all the aspects of the film/show. Score, cinematography, story, actor delivery, etc.. and this is far above all other channels. Keep it up
I know 😂 they're the only channel I've bought a membership to because they've legit not chosen a single bad movie to react to.
You guysss 😭😭😭 Thank you so much for being so kind, for all the love and support, it honestly means the world to us! Y'all are the best ❤️
😮
I concur, this is why I can’t wait for them to do Young Frankenstein because of all the original laboratory sets they got from the Bela Lugosi era horror movies as well as their use of black-and-white film etc…
Great episode for many reasons, but when that Glenn Miller Band - In the Mood hits is so perfect.
This episode was fire! Loving the soundtrack throughout the show. Really helps with the retro atmosphere 👌

Maximus is an endurance build with a little bit of strength and luck. Sacrificed perception intelligence and charisma.
6:44 the thing is the brotherhood punishes squires that failed to protect ther knight so yeah, maximus was hesitant.
Maximus is really sh*t outta luck. This lie is only getting bigger and bigger. We actually discuss his character quite a bit after the episode!
@@OfficialMediaKnights funny you say 'shit out of luck' since luck is actually his highest character stat according to the writers lol.
Cooper's "satchel" are saddlebags, meant to drape across a horses back just behind the saddle. Standard accoutrement for a classic cowboy. Another great bit of attention to detail.
I'm pretty sure they're the saddlebags from his horse at the start, the same as the cowboy outfit he's wearing under his coat.
@@Scyth0r that's definitely implied
I appreciate how Ella went through the interrogation herself instead of having a stunt woman. Respects.
That’s pretty badass! Love it when actors enjoy doing their own stunts.
What interrogation?
@@Nekotaku_TV I forgot to put "scene" after interrogation
@@batmanvsjoker7725 You don't need that, it doesn't change my question. I think you're confused though, there was no interrogation scene. There was an interview but there were no stunts in it, and the one with Lucy was first like torture but then he said she's being used as bait. Nothing about interrogation and he didn't try to get info out of her... Maybe you don't know what the word means, just wondering and letting you know haha.
@@Nekotaku_TV No stunt in it? Being tied up and dunked into water isn't a stunt? Maybe you don't know what the word means, just wondering and letting you know haha.
To be fair to Maximus, Squires are meant to ensure the safety of their Knight. He would probably ve executed or at the very least, ousted from the Brotherhood. His intelligence stat is also fairly low it seems 😂 Awesome reaction as usual guys
Pretty sure he also has the idiot Savant trait. XD
I see! So he really didn’t have any other option than to lie… Also love how this game is referencing stats! That’s the first time we’ve seen that done!
@@RawrGabbysaurus That's what I think too; I know it'd be a bit too much (even for this show) but I would have died laughing if they played the 'Idiot Savant' XP bonus sound when Max successfully did something by accident. 😂
Maximus: INT 4, CHR 2, END 8. Would explain a lot, including getting shut down so fast trying to barter down to 4 caps 😆
@@OfficialMediaKnights
Maximus had the option to save his master. He literally let him die - it's almost tantamount to murder - hope he will pay for it.
It's hard to tell whether they failed at portraying the Brotherhood's punishments as harshly as they could've or if they intentionally left it sort of ambiguous so it isn't clear exactly what they'd do to Max if he returns without his knight. Either way, it leaves a portion of the audience thinking he's an idiot for not just coming clean, but in reality, they could very well execute him since it's his job to die for his Knight. Especially since he literally told a high priest that he'd give his life for the Brotherhood. It seems like Maximus is a character that was definitely written to divide the audience. He's very polarizing. Even the fact that he could've potentially been the one who sabotaged Dane's boots has been intentionally left vague.
IMO, Maximus is the most interesting character in the show. The Ghoul is obviously incredible, but it's not hard to make that character archetype a fan favorite. He'd be loved even if he didn't have such a cool backstory.
The water chip breaking is a HUGE easter egg! It's what started the whole Fallout franchise.
Y’all don’t seem to understand how violent and culty this sect of the brotherhood is. Or that Maximus is a scared little boy right now.
We kind of started understanding that aspect of him during ep 5. We thought the Brotherhood would be a bit more fair with their squires. We were wrong!
They really nailed this show. The story winds up being amazing and using game mechanics in “real life” to stay true to the games was such a great decision
The Axolotl sounds it makes when it gets shot in the head - "huuuuh!" - then when it chases after Squire Thaddeus, then he tops it off with high pitched scream had me in stitches.
All great characters and fantastic acting from all.
Thaddeus and Maximus are a great team.
I cant really see the Brotherhood being like o we get it Maximus your knight is dead its all good new squire just keep the armor no big deal lol.
Its funny too that the squires duffel bag is a gaming reference to your characters carrying weight/inventory lmaoo but love yalls reaction to this series
Squire: I'm beginning to think it might not be Knight Titus in that suit
Maximus: "FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK"
Squire: Nvm, thats him
We learn more and more of the Ghoul's backstory as the episodes roll on. By far my favorite character!
" Hey guys, i know my friend was crippled under mysterious circumstances in my vicinity a few days ago... But youre never going to believe this but my lord knight whom i was sworn to protect died as well. I had nothing to do with it really!"
Yea no 😂
Haha! He could’ve come clean right off the bat. Titus death for the most part was accidental. They don’t have to know about him not giving Titus the meds 😂 But if he’s that scared then it kinda makes you question why.
@@OfficialMediaKnights true true, I just feel like it's one of those "damned if you do damned if ya don't" things.
Anywho, loving your reactions and discussions(as always) in these. In my Top3 fav channels!
You guys have always been great at really making the effort to connect with characters and try to understand their motivations and dynamics! I was surprised how many other reactors immediately wrote off Maximus as just a horrible, stupid, self-serving guy (while also adoring The Ghoul, but I digress). Like obviously it's fine to feel wary of a guy who is portrayed with a lot of ambiguity regarding what he's willing to do for power, but it's so weird how their dislike for the character leads them to completely dismiss and distrust everything he does, even later on in the series when he's very clearly in the right/justified in his actions?
Maximus = average Intelligence, but low Perception. Not 'dumb', really. Makes snap panic decisions under pressure that usually don't end well. Still, people just don't think about things from his perspective or give him any benefit of the doubt. I don't really understand why.
* Titus made it VERY clear to Maximus that Squires are disposable, and will be killed for failing their Knights. The reason for failing doesn't matter - after all, they have 'plenty of squires'. Titus dead means Maximus dead, unless he has something to trade.
* What else was he supposed to do other than 'leave the suit unattended' while getting it fixed? It weighs like a ton, who was going to look after it for him? He could have tried to hide it, definitely (see:snap bad decisons above), but he's bad at thinking on his feet, for sure.
Not sure what people expect from an orphan raised in a militaristic cult. He actually turned out very well under the circumstances. Maximus is a great, complex character and Aaron does an amazing job bringing him to life.
LMAO I just noticed the pink flamingo that the gulper at 24:35
This was a really interesting discussion about Maximus after this episode which I really appreciate and understand. I feel that there is a big point about Maximus people are missing a lot in season one. Everyone is assuming that he is a lot more experienced than Lucy regarding the wasteland. While that might technically be true, it doesn't mean he is experienced. The day Titus died, that was his very first trip out into the field after his first promotion. All he'd been doing before that day is reading textbooks and eating the Brotherhood propaganda. He is acting stupid, but its because he's almost as innocent about the dangers as Lucy. He might be more trained and more prepared, but it's just from books and stories.
Thank you so much for sticking around for the discussion! We find his character so intriguing because of all the reasons we stated. You are right! He is not at all that experienced with the Wasteland and that definitely comes across in his decision making. I guess it's easy to forget that sometimes. Can't wait to see where they take his character!
@@OfficialMediaKnights I have a secret to tell you in case you don't know... your discussions are the best bits... keep being insightful, thoughtful, and thought-provoking, and I'll keep coming back!
the gulper in this episode was epic. they did such a great job with the monster design. i am loving that you guys are digging this show. keep up the amazing reactions 🤘
The Gulper looked gnarly! Great design. The mouth creeped us out though 😂
But I dont think it was in the Games 🤔

One of the callbacks to the games which is hilarious is the fact that players generally give their companions all the crap to lug around.
Just like the squires in those massive sacks. 😆
Coop was the original poster boy for VaultTec.
My one gripe with this show is that I have no idea how Maximus managed to put his left arm in the right arm of the power armor, fit his left hand in the right hand of the suit and kill that guy.
Very good point!
@laraamaro8908 other than that I've enjoyed it 😂
I've had the thumbs up bobblehead vault boy on my shelf since Fallout 4 release day, and I never realised it was Walton Goggins! 😮
Always a pleasure to watch your videos and hear your insight. You guys have true love for cinema and it shows. Best channel of this kind! Thank you
Thank you so much for your kind words and support! We’re so lucky to have you guys here ❤️
I love that you brought up the idea of their morals, since the morality spectrum is also a part of the Fallout games, I feel like the three main storylines we are following three different morality archetypes from the game!
Something to know about this show is that it really thrives on multiple viewings. There are things which you will probably wonder about, but are actually explained through contextual clues. Thr showrunners don’t hold your hand explaining everything, but many apparent plot holes arent holes.
I really love that the three main character represent how people play the games. You have the righteous players in Lucy. The do some bad and some good players in Maximus. And the Ghoul the players that don't give a F
I was definitely Maximus in my first playthrough. "What IS that, a two headed cow? Shoot it, shoot it, shoot it before it eats me! KaBLAM-o!"

I love watching this with the two of you. Always on point
As a Twin Peaks fan, it's so weird watching a show that has Kyle MacLachlan in it and a character NOT played by him named Coop. 😂
I recently came across your videos and have enjoyed watching them. Makes me feel the emotions you both feel watching these shows and movies. Keep it up lol
I finished the finale last night, this show deserves so many awards, but all i can say without any spoilers, is that things get crazy and wild. They open things up for a season 2 which i heard is green lit.
I think Maximus pretended to be Titus because his job was to protect his knight at all costs no matter what. If a squire looses his knight then there is no sense of coming back to the brotherhood at all sort of thing no matter how it happened!
Maximus pretends to be Titus
@@KeysundKreisPlaylists_Colt Oops!
Goes to show how messed up the Brotherhood of Steel is as well!
@@OfficialMediaKnightsthey are, especially if you'd play the games you'll see how they are.
I truly love your insight about characters and stories. Its like having a real conversation about why the things happen the way they do, or why it makes it compelling. You really dive into the shoes of the setting and characters in a way that reminds me of how my sibling and I chat about ttrpg gaming/movies/etc. It's the immersion in the story, the draw, and then saying WHY it draws us in. Ya'll take time to really sink, and digest it from an objective point of view.
As a gamer watching this show, it was great to see it again with a group that has never played to see if it still holds up. And I think that if the show can get the crazy themes and lore to those who doesn't play and still be sucked in, it makes for an amazing new way to rewatch. Anyway, tangent aside. Great video, and reaction!
As a hardcore fan I can say its a near perfect adaptation imo. And I'm loving seeing you're perspective and analysis as newcomers. I am glad you're enjoying it. Looking forward to you seeing the rest, it only gets better from here.
omg thank you for realizing that he didn't help the dog out of the kindness of his heart.
Always love your reactions!
It's not so much that Thaddeus's explanation justified his actions, it's that Maximus understood where he was coming from, and the desire to go from being the victim to the bully.
When Titus did the fu*k, fu*k, fu*k, fu*k, fu*k, it was to save himself. When Maximus did the fu*k, fu*k, fu*k, fu*k, fu*k, It was to save his squire.
Maximus is a perfect example of a min/max character build. In the game, you have SPECIAL stats - Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. He clearly has maxed out Charisma and Luck, with a very low Intelligence.
I'm really happy about how much appreciation you're showing Maximus. Way too many people say they hate Maximus and that Aaron Moten is a bad actor. It's not true. Maximus just isn't an easy character to root for. To put it in game terms, he's a high-Endurance, low-Intelligence neutral karma character. I think you're dead on that he is closest to how the average person would be in that situation. And that's not always fun to watch. And since Aaron doesn't get the great, snappy dialogue that other characters have, it makes people think less of his performance, and that's really not fair.
One of the loading screens in Fallout 4 describes the gulper as a mutated salamander (and they very much look like salamanders in FO4 - you find them in the Far Harbor DLC). Seeing this axolotl thing in this show was rather surprising, but I guess it's a specific "mutation" for this particular area (you'll learn more about this type of gulper later in the show). I'm so glad you two are doing this series. You're one of my favorite reaction channels. Can't wait to see the rest! :)
Some crazy shit is that Norm and Thaddeus are 40 years old irl
IRL Norm is 30 and Thaddeus is 42 but your point remains-they both look weirdly young.
Another great reaction! Can not WAIT to watch y'all finish this season! 😃
So happy you both have not played the games. Seeing the world for the first time with this immersion is amazing. This show pairs great with the games, now when you play them you will get the reverse easter egg of finding out where the lore in the show came from.

Hey! Love y’alls channel, and loving this series so far. I do highly recommend y’all play the games. They’re pretty easy to pick up and put down at your leisure as they have a very generous save feature. If you don’t have the time, there are plenty of lore video essay type videos out there to catch yall up on some of the references you may or may not be missing! ❤
The T-suit was actually real in this series. Some CGI here and there, yes, but that was a practical suit actors walked in.

Will you be playing any of the Fallout games when you have finished watching the series? They are all set before the post-war aspect of the TV series, so you won't play through any spoilers but you *will* be left with some questions!
Fallout runs on video game physics. Like, literally. 😆
I just got to say Thank You! ou guys got me to watch this series, and it's SO good! This season is crazy
I'd call that sea creature a "fingerfish". And it's no wonder that it has a good grip, isn't it?
The Gulper is a mutated salamander. They're actually in Fallout76.
27:56, There on the poster you see Cooper Howard's image but then it's covered by the "cartoonish" Vault-boy picture which tells you that there was a "fallout" between him and Vault-tec.
Congrats on being the first reactors (that I've seen) know that it was a mutated axolotl 🤣
Should Max have told the truth?. Maybe, but here is a reason for not to do it: Remember E1? A squire touching (imagine wearing!) a power armor deserves death.
Fantastic reaction. You're the best, guys.
"How could you leave it unattended man?" Who exactly could he have watch over it, his invisible friend? Also in case you didn't notice, he needed a place where he could hoist it up to be worked on, and this was the best and closest place he could drag that heavy suit to.
Great reaction.
I love the Ghoul an unhealthy amount 😂
Hmm. Wonder why they covered his promo with the vault boy promo...
ghouls needing chems to not go feral is new lore created by the tv series,.. i like it since ghouls are normally created by exposure to radiation mutating them,.. i hope they incorporate it into the next game
17:26 that is actually 100% correct, it has, in fact, been proven that torture doesn’t work. a person will instantly cave to give the torturer what they want.

@@OfficialMediaKnights I think you two would really like Burn Notice - a really well-written show that seems sadly forgotten so soon. (Also, Bruce Campbell!)
Shogun is another recent show that just finished, and it is fantastic! It is based on a book that is loosely based on a real story from feudal Japan. It is full of so many rich and dynamic characters, as well as some of the best costumes and world design I've seen in a show. It really transports you to that time period of Japan and what it might be like to be a complete stranger in that land. I think you both would really enjoy it!
Absolutely love it you both are my favorite reaction ever
You're so kind, thank youuuu!! We're so glad to have you with us, your consistent support means the world!
Absolutely
well the power armor is kinda "real" it is a functional practical prop ... they have contracted company called Legacy, which did Iron Man and stuff like that, but they had never actually made a suit quite as functional as this particular suit. Despite this being new territory for them, it worked well enough to be used on set. I saw some short clips of actors dancing in the armor on set :D
In the world all Fallout, you need to be very specific when someone offers you a chance to go "Fishing with friends"... 🤔
Maximus is DEFINITELY NOT an INT/CHA build...
But he got that dawg in him

Awwww... little Jaws Homage there with the head/buouy.
“thou shalt get sidetracked by bull shit every goddamn time.” proof that the creators played the game.
The baby deer was real. So many other shows would’ve just made the whole thing CGI.
Got laid off my job today, good video to get home to
I like that they made the Vault Boy mascot of Vaultech to be the most badass gunslinger of the wasteland
4:23 no, keep staying
5:22 there are many "things" lurking in the wastelands, and radroches are the least dangerous ones
26:15 from the explanation given by Three Dogs, DJ in Fallout 3: ghouls are people who have absorbed a huge dose of radiation and were not lucky enough to die.
Gotta love the Idiot Savant perk.
I still think The Ghoul was doing Lucy a favor pouring out his canteen. Ghouls don't have to worry about radiation and I'm willing to bet the water in his canteen was heavily irradiated and would of gave Lucy sever rad poisoning
The Gulper is a mutated axolotl, which are being studied by scientists today IRL due to them being one of the most complex organisms that can regrow limbs 😯
