Our BIGGEST California Halibut Ever! (CATCH, CLEAN and COOK)

  • We took my boat out for some local Southern California halibut fishing and it started out pretty slow. I forgot a gaff and had to make one out of a tuna hook, some electrical tape and a deck brush handle. I am thankful that I did because Nick hooked his personal best halibut and there was no way it was fitting in the net!
    We caught some other fish like sand bass and sculpin but Nick's fish was the standout.

    Adam, your buddy landed a door mat of a Halibut! I watched a video by a marine institute that showed surprisingly that Halibut along with Lingcod in 100 foot plus deep rocky areas. Adam you’re a great guy! You fish hard all day and then cook up an excellent meal at night. Word to Rachel. Don’t let Adam be the fish that got away!🙃

    17:25 -- The ghetto gaff worked!!! 😂
    Question: How is your friend able to hold that California halibut by the gill plate? When I fished for Pacific halibut on a sportboat in Alaska, the deckhands said do not grab the halibut by the gill plate because it is very sharp.

    • @fluentfishing
      @fluentfishing  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I can't believe that it worked, we got super lucky that fish didn't go crazy. And I am not sure Nick is just a fish whisperer apparently

    The Fish and Game have been citing for not having a "Landing Net" while fishing... they don't even need to see you fishing to give you the ticket... they just need to see your rods and they can cite you for not having the landing net on board... a buddy of mine was cited

    • @fluentfishing
      @fluentfishing  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Dang that is a bummer he got cited for that. We had a net but forgot the gaff. Our net was wayyyy too small for that last fish.

    Hi, there! New subscriber here. I am planning to go to LA in early December. I am wondering what kind of fish I should target ? Also, what is the swordfish scene like in the canyons near Catalina ? Love your videos ! Keep up with the good work !

    • @jake9705
      @jake9705 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      First things first: avoid eating any fish caught near the Los Angeles and Orange County coastline. The fish are extremely polluted! Look up "Torrance California pesticide superfund site" on Google. NEVER eat shark, they are the most polluted! Check California Fish & Game for safe consumption guidelines.
      The billfish are typically caught on the west side of Catalina Island, not sure what time of year is best though.

      A few of the charter guys have been getting some swordfish but I haven't heard of as many as the last few years. December is mostly the sculpin, rockfish and halibut stuff. Or structure bass fishing

    Nice 28 pounder! Did you fillet it for your buddy or did he know how to do it himself?
    How deep? Looks like you were in a familiar area off LJ.
    My personal best California halibut was 48 pounds off middle Coronado island about 25 years ago. I can send a pic if you can share an email address.
