I would add David Ball's Private Malone to the list. Absolutely love that one.

I would say “I Pray for You” by Jaron and the Long Road to Love, released back in 2010, could’ve been considered for your list. I don’t know if it went number one, but radio would not stop playing it back then. Also “Rockin the Beer Gut” by Trailer Choir was a really funny smash hit

    • @RENTnerd87

I was rooting SO HARD for that song to be a bigger hit than it was. It stalled out at #14. I think it suffered the same fate as two other songs that year, "This Ain't Nothing" and "Bullets In The Gun", in that radio was hesistant to play such dark songs at that point in time (dark in very different ways, obviously). Of course at the very end of that year "If I Die Young" hit #1 so what do I know?

Heartland was basically a local band that hit the lottery by getting their hands on a really great song that they were able to release to national radio. It was a one-in-a-million shot. Heartland performed at my county fair the year after their hit and was surprised at their overall sound. Aside for their hit ballad, most of their other songs were a really hard rock-edged version of country.

Steve azar also had that great song called sunshine.
Your dark hair draped across my pillow
Says I finally got it right
And as I watch you dreaming, twisted in the sheets
I can't stop thinking about last night
Well I've waited so long, so long, so long
    For someone like you
And as this morning breaks through the window pane
    It reveals the truth
Baby, you're my sunshine, first light
Find your way to places that only know lies
    Failed tries and bruised skies
With hardly time to hold on or be strong, now I'm strong
'Cause like the dawn you push it all away
I tell ya, you're my sunshine
    Everybody needs a little sunshine
Your fingertips, a kiss to this tired face
    It's like I'm young again
    Well I feel beautiful
But most of all vulnerable since you broke in
Baby, you're my sunshine, first light
Find your way to places that only know lies
    Failed tries and bruised skies
With hardly time to hold on or be strong. now I'm strong
'Cause like the dawn you push it all away
I tell ya, you're my sunshine
    Everybody needs a little sunshine
So won't you take me, take me, take me
    Anywhere and everywhere you go
All the warmth you bring to this cold heart
With the slightest touch is enough to know
    Baby, you're my sunshine
    Everybody needs a little sunshine
    Yeah, you're my sunshine

I think the story of Cyndi Thompson is pretty interesting for two reasons: 1)Her debut single "What I Really Meant To Say" spent 3 weeks at #1 on country radio, but only because of a combination of a national tragedy and Billboard's chart rules. See, the song reached #1 the weekend right before 9/11. In the days and weeks following the attack, most stations, especially country stations played a large amount of patriotic songs but because of Billboard's recurrant rules older songs like "God Bless The USA" and "Independence Day" couldn't be counted towards the chart (a month later they did grant an exemption to "God Bless The USA" through some loophole I don't remember and it got to #16). The reason "What I Really Meant To Say" got to stay on top for 2 extra weeks is because in those 2 weeks the Billboard charts were in a virtual standstill because all eligible songs had suffered drastically reduced airplay. In the months to follow a few songs that had already been charting got major boosts thanks to the attacks putting them in a new light, such as Brooks & Dunn'd "Only In America", Tammy Cochran's "Angels In Waiting" (another one hit wonder), David Ball's "Riding With Private Malone", and Jeff Carson's "Real Life". And then of course by December you already had songs inspired by the attacks such as Aaron Tippin's "Where The Stars And Stripes And The Eagle Fly" and of course Alan Jackson's "Where Were You?" But Cyndi Thompson just happened to be in the right place at the right time to have a multi-week #1.
2)Like you explain in the video, she intentionally made herself a one-hit wonder

      @jpippinator 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Lots of country artists used the manufactured tragedy of 9/11 to benefit their wallets. Blue collar America ate it up. It helped to push the acceptance of an unjust never ending war. It’s really messed up if you stop to think about it. Everyone was duped.

I miss these songs so much and they were all fantastic! My favorite was Julie Roberts; what a voice! She could’ve really made it! She was amazing! That song was what country music is about. I miss songs like that. And Sheree Austin’s album was one of the best of the late 90s, early 2000s. I still have it and love it. Steve Azar was so cool and very talented! Cindi’s song was a great song and super popular my Senior year of High School. I Loved Her First makes me cry every time; what a wonderful true story song-again, what country music is supposed to be about! James Otto that was one of my favorites songs of the first decade!! So fun! Still great! 2008 was the last good year in country music, imho. Sometime about 5 to 10 years ago, country music took a horrible turn and started lacking depth, real life and meaning, very sad. What wonderful songs you chose overall; another great video, Grady, thank you!!!

Yes! Most of these are the reason I love Country music today. I think you forgot 'I love you this much' by Jimmy Wayne. It's a beautiful tune that always brings tears to my eyes.
Also, I don't remember the woman who sings it, but the song 'Me and Emily' is another early 2000's one-hit wonder (which also reminds me of 'Break Down Here.)

Heck.....I bought Jessica Andrews Album, snd eore it out, so....I bought another one. My late husband's band, (I play keyboard & Dobro), played 3 of her songs. Jessica was HUGE throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virgina. She now writes music for other artists, and does pretty well. You'll see her perform on many awards shows, country CMT shows, etc. She hasn't disappeared.
Her entire first album was amazingly great! All the the songs were gold!
Jessica's "Unbreakable Hearts" is an icon of stunning music. She also had a song that was a major motion picture's main track. Don't undersell Jessica Andrews. She is smart enough to be a diverse young woman, with many talents, and is secure enough in herself that she doesn't need to be "front & center stage", like many insecure, less talented artists. I highly respect that.
Look her up.....you'll find that your assessmebt of her is way off.

Wild At Heart, Gloriana’s debut single, charted at #15 and Can’t Shake You scraped in at #20, so they weren’t one-hit wonders. I do wonder if they would have had more success if Cheyenne Kimball hadn’t left the band, delaying their second album and taking a lot of the energy from the first album with her

I met Sherrie some years ago in Fayetteville, AR. She was quite nice and I was glad to have my photo taken with her. Interesting tidbit, she was on the sitcom "The Facts of Life" in the 1980's. She played Pippa McKenna in 16 episodes from 1987-1988.
