    Classic Game Room reviews SAMURAI SHODOWN for the Sega Genesis Mega Drive 16-bit video game system. Do you like movies like Ninja Scroll, Lone Wolf and Cub, the Samurai Trilogy, Seven Samurai, Kagemusha, Yojimbo and Sanjuro? Do you like movies by Akira Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune? Do you like Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter Alpha II? Then SAMURAI SHODOWN ( a play off of Showdown ) might be for you. This two dimentional 2-d fighting video game is very fun like Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive and Soul Caliber, DOA . Play with one or two players in a 2d cartoon kind of environment. It has an arcade fighter style, mixed with some old school blade action and ninjas, like Bushido Blade mixed with Street Fighter. Samurai Showdown awesome on the Megadrive sword action! It would be cool to see this game on the Playstation 3 PS3 PS2 Xbox 360 or Wii
    Be sure to watch the original Classic Game Room episodes. Classic Game Room was the original classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999-2000, now on DVD. The HD series is reviewing PS3, PS2, Genesis, NES, Atari and Xbox 360. XBLA. videos review reviews show wii

    This game caught on like wildfire back in the day and still has a huge cult following till this day, a very nice Genesis port from a collective standpoint but nothing beats the true original Neo Geo version in it's full glory, especially with a modded Geo.

    one of the most cherished titles of my childhood, right up there with mario 64 or nhl 95. Absolutely loved this game. I need to rebuy it just so I can say I have it. Amazing game

    The SNES port of this game looked horrible graphically compared to this and especially the arcade cabinet version.
    This isn't arcade-perfect, but it's substantial enough.

    It's funny you mentioned that there is no body parts being sliced off, because I'm pretty sure in the Arcade version that you can cut each other in half with the finishing slash.
    Also, since you mentioned misspellings, in Samurai Shodown 3, after winning a round it says "Victoly" instead of "Victory"

    The series didn't come into it's own until Samurai Shodown II but even the first outing has nice attention to detail and subtle emphasis on defense which adds some nice depth for an early fighting game.

    An amusing segment. There actually IS a command to make Poppy (Galford's dog) attack and hold on to the enemy, opening him/her up for a followup attack.
    As for Nakoruru, she's an Ainu priestess. Ainu are basically the Japanese equivalent of Native Americans, only regarded with even more general disdain.

    The SS Anthology is great on the psp. You can play through all 6 Samurai Shodowns. Best part about the franchise is it's alot like final fantasy in that many characters styles are radically changed overtime so 3 doesn't feel like 4, an 4 doesn't feel like 5 etc etc

    • @Bloodreign1

      Anthology was best enjoyed on the PS2 and Wii, the PSP one has so much loading in it, it drains the games of their fun.

    i can't help it, but every time i hear the transformers movie mentioned, i think of weird al's "dare to be stupid". which is nice.
    bushido blade indeed was awesome indeed, albeit a bit too easy. and double impact... never thought i'd hear that reference in the classic game room! van damme was indeed in the street fighter movie, as guile. best to forget that one, though...
    always glad to hear your voice, mark, always nice and relaxing.

    The small chars I think I already recognized, but still the animation was very similar to the original NG version, and that means all the basic attacks were present and worked almost the same, no modifications. All that equalled to a gameplay more similar to the original game.
    Sound wise, the Genesis version had very poor midis which had nothing to do with the original composition, while the SNES ver was more close to that. Though IIRC Genesis version had more voices.

    Also you can't play them on a region 1 DVD player and have to go with region free DVD player so you can view.
    But the good news is I've heard you can still play this non region 1 DVD disc on your laptop and if your wondering what region the disc are they are region 2 just to let you know.
    All six films plus the lousy US version.
    Samurai Shogun.
    Still I rather watch the authentic versions over the American dubbed version.

    Great port of the game. I'm actually surprised how well it did on Genesis. The SNES version was not acceptable at all, which is hard for me to admit, being a SNES fan.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The SNES version was quite acceptable if one can accept the Genesis version. Both have a lot wrong with them, but Genesis fans won't admit something is definitely wrong with their version.
      If you are unhappy, stick with the PS2 Anthology version, or the later released versions on modern consoles. For me, these 16 bit ports are good enough, but get played far less than Anthology, or even the PS1 Samurai Spirits Fencing Pack, which has Sam Spirits 1 and 2.

    Firstly, it pisses me off how much better this looks on the Genesis. Secondly, the spelling of Shodown could also be a reference to the Japanese word "Shodan," which means first (sho) dan (master, rank), which would mean the title meant first master of the samurai. Or first ranked samurai.

    The Ainu people in Japan were sort of the equivalent of Native Americans in the US; an indigenous, hunter-gatherer society. I'm not well versed in SamSho, but I'm guessing Nakoururu has that sort of background.

    hmm strange I never noticed it was spelled Shodown either. I remember playing it in the arcades and guess I just never noticed or picked up on it.
    Btw Bushido Blade 2 was excellent. I used to play that game all the time and those games became quite rare even when the PSX was still alive.

    Neogeo version is so much better more blood spray plus the music is a lot better! If you got a Wii?
    Buy it for 900 Wii points or $9.00 US.
    This game rocks!
    Just don't go with this version at all seriously I mean it you won't be disappointed at all!
    Also Lone Wolf looks Awesome but don't get the American Version I heard it's badly cropped overly priced and no features if you want the best version buy the one on the UK website for 25 pounds or or about $43.00 US.

    @3yE 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, yeah, sound and graphics abilities of SNES were per se better, and the CPU is extremely nice, but this last fact has never really mattered.
    What has mattered was that MegaDrive/Genesis has the same CPU used in arcade machines, and other hardware too, so most games could be direct arcade ports, while SNES "ports" were actually rewrites handled by altogether different people.

  • @andreschiriff4354

    This is one of the best ports of snk on the Sega Genesis.

  • @Xanophalgue
    @Xanophalgue 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sega Version Of Samurai Spirits/Shodown you could still cut guys in half randomly and sometimes make blood spurt everywhere when you beat them. SNES you couldn't. Sega version had bigger sprites but didn't have the screen widen and shrink if you were far apart or closed in on each other. SNES did though. Sega version had some blood in it when struck. SNES didn't. Over all the Sega version was better than the SNES. But neither could touch the Arcade version. I still play my Genesis one :)

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once you look under the hood and see all the things wrong with the Genesis port, then you realize a lot was cut out for those bigger sprites, while the SNES played and stayed truer to the arcade. And I mean a shitload of things were cut from the Genesis port, to where it no longer feels entirely like Sam Sho. The 16 bit ports weren't great, but serviceable, but once I got my hands on the PS2 Anthology, and the PS1 compilation of SS 1 and 2, I stick to those when I want to seriously play the series. Both 16 bit ports will be played when I decide to go on another SNK fighting game port kick.
      But dear lord child, the Genesis port is absolutely horrendous, the SNES version isn't great either, but is actually better than this port, far fewer sacrifices to make the game run on the SNES. SNES version does have blood, just a lighter shade of red, to slightly orange.

      But plays inaccurately to the arcade version, and had far more cuts than the SNES version, all that to have bigger sprites, a sacrifice that in the end wasn't worth it. Hell the Japanese Super Famicom version has even more animation present than the SNES and Genesis ports.
