I just put a comment on saying I never beat it then I saw yours... as a kid I got to the maze level so pretty much right to the end haha. Got the collection on switch so going to revisit after all these years
Unlimited shurikens: In the options menu, set the shuriken level to "00" and wait about ten seconds. The zeros will morph into an infinity (Lemniscate) symbol and your shurikens count will remain at 999.
I remember playing Shinobi for hours back then. The Genesis had a lot of games, and Shinobi was truly one of the games at the top of the food chain. Graphics, music, gameplay, it had everything you wanted from a video game. A classic game that belongs in the Hall of Fame of Videogames, if there was such a thing.
A timeless classic, perfect game in every respects! And it also has the status of being an early Mega Drive game, released at the end of 1989, and it established new standards in console gaming.
I'm surprised he doesn't mention the shuriken trick. You go to the options screen, select 00 for shurikens and let it sit there for about 10 seconds. The 00 will turn to an infinity sign. I never played this game without doing that. Possibly the best action 16 bit title ever. I use to plug in my earphones to my Genesis console and just listened to the music in the options screen.
What's more classic than this great game! Classic Game Room videos when they were good! I saw this one a while ago though I had no idea it was over 12 years old! Mark the intergalactic space arcade crashed, though you can return to glory.
the technical prowess being showcased in this game was out of this world in yesterday's standard. I still remember being amazed by the arcade quality graphics produced on a home console. Also, the music written by the famed composer Yuzo is probably one of the most memorable bgm that I have ever heard in a videogame.
I remember this game was ultra popular in my country (El Salvador) along with Contra III, Super Castlevania IV, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles In Time, Battletoads & Double Dragon, Batman Returns, Super Street Fighter II, Gradius III, Mortal Kombat II, Ninja Gaiden and Megaman X2. Those were by the far most popular games at the time. Of course after Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and Super Mario World.
AndyHollan Zeed was his name, and yeah he's pretty much impossible to predict lol You should play Shinobi 3. You fight Zeed again in that game and he's a much more thrilling boss fight while still being difficult yet not too cheap.
I love this game so much. The music, enemies, bosses, and gameplay is so badass! It's maybe a little too hard at some parts, but with practice and plenty of lives it's bearable.
Also consider the graphics, if I am not wrong Sega CD were already out, with much better graphics, however I remember for the era and the hardware the graphics were excellent, most people can’t notice today but compare the looks of this game with other videos with Genesis games; also fun and challenging, the music was cool. I agree with what this guy says the game was excellent.
It's such a shame that the Shinobi franchise died out as it is among one of the best classic gaming series along with Golden Axe and Streets of Rage, I dont get why all 3 of these series dont make a come back as there's obviously still a audience for these games among retro gaming fans. If only Sega would return to their heyday and release the 4th installment of each of these games and release them on XBLA and PSN.
Only Shinobi really did make a comeback with PS2 title and Kunoichi / Nightshade. I guess the developers of the others were let go alongside so many others after the Sammy merger.
Not only is this a great game, it also has one of the most memorable boss battle encounters; some of which consists of popular comic book superheroes and film villains. Sorry if I was a bit nerdy there, but hey.
Thanks for bringing back the time of Sega 16 I loved this game also. When i bought Sega, this game was in the default games together with Sonic. Finishing took a bit of time. I remember clearly how the Sega would be burning to reach the end of the game. Has anyone ever noticed that Sega instructions said, to not keep it on more than 1h (i think it was 1h) but many of the games could take 6h or more to finish (no saving in that time of age) :)
I was about 10 when my dad bought this for me... I got this and golden axe 2 and they were my first games on the system. Wow memories going back all those years... to this day it was one of the only games I never finished... I remember getting past the dinosaur and then I got to the maze level but never managed to beat that. Luckily I just got the mega drive collection for my switch with all the shinobi and shadow dancer games so that's my Xmas holidays all sorted with what I'm going to do!
i just stumbled across your video and this is a game i have been searching for for years because i could not remember the name of the game. thank you so much for reminding me of this games name.
Awesome game! I like the enemies/enviroments in this game. Ther Termimator dude who literally goes incredibly HULK lol, the ninja nun babes, fat biker dudes with flamethrowers, even our home boy Godzilla makes an appearence! Also why the hell did Spider Man show up in a ninja side scrolling game, I never quite got why he was a boss lol. Still one of the best games for the Genesis, Shinobi 3 for the Genesis is also a really great game that follows this one more closely than the other sequal did.
In case any of you didn't know this already ,that's Sonny Chiba (Martial Artists and Actor) in the intro that is dressed up as Shinobi and is deflecting the Shurikens with his Katana blade. =)
This is one of my top 2 favorite games for the Genesis, I still cant believe I got my copy for a quarter at a yard sale...by the away Mark I think I'm your latino clone!
Wow! I remembered every section you showed here! This must have been one of the last games I played before giving up Gaming in 1990ish (only to return to the fold in 2004!.........And, yeah, 2004 games (Like GTA 3 / Call of Duty 1 / Operation Flashpoint ) _blew my mind!_ :D) The SHINOBI music just *Reeks* of the 80s for me!
i remember that this was one of the toughest games i have ever played. The fact it was a platform game (not my strongest game genre) made it so challenging for me. It was good at the time
as i kid, i never ever made it past the waterfall level, this game was so fuckin hard, but i loved the gamepla so i woul always replay the first 2 levels even knowing i couldnt beat it
thats a shame, you should persevere and maybe follow a walk through. I used to watch my elder brother play, he would always use the jump jutsu when on the last part of the waterfall stage where you had to land on vertical logs. I found doing it with the regular jump ability was easier and more predictable. My problem is i tend to run out of lives or shurikens after getting past the mid point. I tend to intentionally take forever in the factory level as the lives pickup that you can open at the start of the map which is next to the first conveyer but you have to fall to your death to pick it up but it gives you 3 lives each time so you increase your lives by 2 each time.. though its hard to tell how many you have since your counter cant go higher than 9
I used to love the music of this game. When my cousin loaned the game to my brother and me I wouldn't play it much (big surprise) but just sit and listen to the music on sound select. ^_^
Also, Sega just recently released this on the PS3 (put together by the folks at M2) and its the ultimate emulated version to own. It has a great front end complete with music jukebox, movie recording, unlimited save states, both versions (USA) ROS & (JPN) The Super Shinobi w/ extended ending. The video options let you run it in 1080p without filtering so it won't look blurry. Trophy support is also fun.
Wow, An awesome review of the awesome Revenge of Shinobi, and a reference to 'Disco Godfather' in one video. You sir, are pretty amazing. PUT YOUR WEIGHT ON IT!
@Caluma122 That could very well be it. Considering ClassicGameRoom has grown and included a larger cast of peeps, it's reasonable to assume that. I don't mind the new people, I just want the old Mark back.
I must have completed this game about 20 times when I had the megadrive version, probably my fav' megadrive game,I wish they included it on the 360s ultimate megadrive collection, but the inclusion of shinobi 3 & the arcade original kind of made up for it. A TRUE CLASSIC!!
I bought this game for a quarter at a yard sale back in the 90's, the lady that sold it didnt know what it was, I was so happy playing it on my Genesis maybe one day i can find it again :-\
It may feel dated by today's standards to many, but it doesn't take away that it's still a very solid platformer. The game is challenging, and is further proof that games were harder then.
I got this game along with my brand new sega genesis+sonic the hedgehog game on christmas of 1991, I just loved my genesis, it made me a very happy 6 year old kid lol
OH man that would be so cool to have a Genesis with a digital output for the audio! Dam! You could get your Genesis with the S-Video and then put the digital out on it as well! That would be sooooo rad! The Genesis has awesome stereo sound its a dam shame it can not be shown off on youtube.
2 Days ago, I beat Revenge of Shinobi on Normal Difficulty, without dying once!! Godzilla (Level 7 boss) hit me and I used the Mijin magic once (suicide ninjitsu at the cost of 1 life!). I even had 9 lives at the end and I got the 'Good' ending with the girl.
beautiful! i couldnt narrate such a wonderful game better myself. this man knows all games from all different genres and respects all aspects of gaming. im subscribing, if u are a true gamer or if u practice ninjitsu u would totally respect this guy and his videos. thanx 4 posting
There's a trick to have infinite shirukens... just go to the options and set it to 00 and wait... goes to infinity symbol after 5 seconds. I however loved playing with zero. Loved getting the power up and blocking everything with a sword. Made it soooo much fun!
I'd played the original NES version for years, just got the Master System version in a box of yard sale goodies and I was blown away....Everything looks so much better on Sega. Now I have to track this one down after seeing this.
Shinobi 2 was an excellent game. Highly-addictive and hard as well. The perfect combo. I always use to get stuck on the level before the final boss where you're in a maze and you have to go through those rotating doors. I hated doing that. I also hated the highway level because it was either double-jump over the highway and fall or get run over by the cars lol
One of the best game soundtracks of all time! Yuzo Koshiro was the rock star of the gaming world back then. I miss the days when video game music was like this. As for the game, it is the best Shinobi game AND best ninja game ever, hands down. As for Ninja Gaiden, all it was was hard. I defeated the original NES game with no cheating. It was the hardest game I have ever beaten. However, this game was a true next-gen experience from top to bottom at the time...more polished, more fun.
What an awesome review! Those words could be my own. The best Mega Drive game and one of the best games of all time. And the music oh my god......amazing.
I forgot how much I loved this game when I was little until I bought the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection and replayed Shinobi III. It's a shame they didn't include The Revenge of Shinobi in that collection. Good times.
My favorite game ever. I beat it just yesterday, at the age of 39.
I beat it again today...on Hard...and limited shurikens. I still revisit this classic every 5 years or so.
its better to beat a game than to beat your meat!
I just put a comment on saying I never beat it then I saw yours... as a kid I got to the maze level so pretty much right to the end haha.
Got the collection on switch so going to revisit after all these years
I don't think there was a time I couldn't beat it, but I always played on Easy or Normal. I've now beaten it on Hardest for once.
That last level is so confusing
I love this game. The music absolutely blew me away when I was a kid.
Unlimited shurikens: In the options menu, set the shuriken level to "00" and wait about ten seconds. The zeros will morph into an infinity (Lemniscate) symbol and your shurikens count will remain at 999.

One of my childhood favorites, man I miss Classic Game Room.
same. gone too soon
I spent a good portion of my youth playing this game. Best soundtrack ever.

Also, the music written by the famed composer Yuzo is probably one of the most memorable bgm that I have ever heard in a videogame.
One of the best Mega Drive/Genesis games ever made, the music is outstanding. This one really shows the potential of the Sega 16-bit system.
go to options put the shuriken to 00 and leave the arrow on it, wait a couple of seconds the 00 will turn into infinite :)
It's nice to see someone review a game they actually enjoy for a change.
Shinobi III Return of the Ninja Master is my favorite in the series.
15 years later, this is the review that ended up convincing me to play what turned out to be one of my favorite games of all time.
Love the music when you fight the bosses
the game intro brings back a great memory
I remember playing this. The final boss (can't remember his name) was hard-as-hell to beat.
Loved this game.
AndyHollan Zeed was his name, and yeah he's pretty much impossible to predict lol
You should play Shinobi 3. You fight Zeed again in that game and he's a much more thrilling boss fight while still being difficult yet not too cheap.
Brings back some memories I remember you fought the terminator and batman on one level lol
Wow!!! Ninjas who blow up! Best of both worlds.
This was the game that made my buy a Genesis, after seeing it over a friends house.
Can't wait for the 2nd part! Also please do a Shinobi III mega review in the future!
It's such a shame that the Shinobi franchise died out as it is among one of the best classic gaming series along with Golden Axe and Streets of Rage, I dont get why all 3 of these series dont make a come back as there's obviously still a audience for these games among retro gaming fans. I remember playing this game it was so awesome...ahhhh the good old days :*)
Spent so much of my young life playing this great game. Love it!!!!!
Wow I remember this.. Got kind of Nostalgic and looked up some old timers like Sonic and this :D
Good times!
I bought an import Japanese Sega Megadrive, and Super Shinobi came free with this wonder 16 bit console. China town is the best ost of this game.
If you really do keep making Classic Game Room reviews for 30 more years, I'll be very happy indeed!
Not only is this a great game, it also has one of the most memorable boss battle encounters; some of which consists of popular comic book superheroes and film villains. Sorry if I was a bit nerdy there, but hey.
Thanks for bringing back the time of Sega 16
I loved this game also. When i bought Sega, this game was in the default games together with Sonic. Finishing took a bit of time. I had this on the Sega Classics Arcade Collection, I can remember when my TV broke and I was playing this game on a black and white TV.
When I got my Genesis it came with the 6-pack. This game was one of the 6. I fell in love with this game the moment I selected to play it.
A thing i remember about the game is how good the soundtracks/music is. Damn is enjoyable!
I was about 10 when my dad bought this for me... I got this and golden axe 2 and they were my first games on the system.
Wow memories going back all those years... to this day it was one of the only games I never finished... I remember getting past the dinosaur and then I got to the maze level but never managed to beat that.
Luckily I just got the mega drive collection for my switch with all the shinobi and shadow dancer games so that's my Xmas holidays all sorted with what I'm going to do!
one of my favorites along with STREETS OF RAGE.
Brings me back to my childhood, awesome game.
way ahead of its time this game was absolutely BRILLIANT! and thats just the music lol
2:09 just caught myself saying WOW when he shot after powering up lol.
Great Game
Great Memories
Lol, I always used to like how Sonny Chiba was in the intro.
i just stumbled across your video and this is a game i have been searching for for years because i could not remember the name of the game. thank you so much for reminding me of this games name.
wow the music and intro still capture me
Awesome game! I like the enemies/enviroments in this game. GREAT review. I'm so glad to see a review in American English.
Wow Mark got through a whole review without mentioning Truxton. I'm impressed
Damn right!! This game rocks! Long overdue for a new Shinobi!!!
This is one of my top 2 favorite games for the Genesis, I still cant believe I got my copy for a quarter at a yard sale...by the away Mark I think I'm your latino clone!
if ther was a stealth element i would be 10/10 but i still love it good memories
20 years old & still the greatest
i luv classic game room and u filmed this one day before my b day
the story-song in the begining always reminds me of the "gyges"-theme from Tyrian :)
it's so AWESOME
Revenge of the Shinobi was my second favorite game on genesis (the first is the original Sonic the Hedgehog of course :P).
I love this guys taste in music! :3
Wow!
I remembered every section you showed here!
This must have been one of the last games I played before giving up Gaming in 1990ish (only to return to the fold in 2004!.........And, yeah, 2004 games (Like GTA 3 / Call of Duty 1 / Operation Flashpoint ) _blew my mind!_ :D)
The SHINOBI music just *Reeks* of the 80s for me!
Ahhh, It brings back some old memories. I was never able to clear that round in which there is water and you have to jump over it.
i remember that this was one of the toughest games i have ever played. The fact it was a platform game (not my strongest game genre) made it so challenging for me. It was good at the time

Wow, An awesome review of the awesome Revenge of Shinobi, and a reference to 'Disco Godfather' in one video. You sir, are pretty amazing. PUT YOUR WEIGHT ON IT!
I agree with you on that. Damn the copyright laws! I want them to bring this back in a classic collection.
I think I played this game more times than any other Genesis game. Very addicting and fun.
@Caluma122 That could very well be it. Considering ClassicGameRoom has grown and included a larger cast of peeps, it's reasonable to assume that. I don't mind the new people, I just want the old Mark back.
Aahhh que des bon souvenir ,dommage que ta pas mis la suite du jeu
one of my childhood memories !!!
I must have completed this game about 20 times when I had the megadrive version, probably my fav' megadrive game,I wish they included it on the 360s ultimate megadrive collection, but the inclusion of shinobi 3 & the arcade original kind of made up for it.
A TRUE CLASSIC!!
I just got Shinobi III for my Genesis and it kicks ass. I should probably pick this one up as well. It looks like it's just as good.
I bought this game for a quarter at a yard sale back in the 90's, the lady that sold it didnt know what it was, I was so happy playing it on my Genesis maybe one day i can find it again :-\
yes i remember them ,,,the puzzle game called columns ,, there was a motor bikes race game too
It may feel dated by today's standards to many, but it doesn't take away that it's still a very solid platformer. The game is challenging, and is further proof that games were harder then.
Disco Shinobi...so much win :3
Whoever is the guy talking is funny as hell I started buggin when he started dancing to that ninja disco song.
I got this game along with my brand new sega genesis+sonic the hedgehog game on christmas of 1991, I just loved my genesis, it made me a very happy 6 year old kid lol
I always loved how the enemys would explode when you killed them, lol, realism has took a lot of the fun out of modern games IMO.
OH man that would be so cool to have a Genesis with a digital output for the audio! Dam! You could get your Genesis with the S-Video and then put the digital out on it as well! That would be sooooo rad! The Genesis has awesome stereo sound its a dam shame it can not be shown off on youtube.

Imagine if this game was re-released today, better sound quality and higher resolutions I think the fans would take into it totally!
beautiful! i couldnt narrate such a wonderful game better myself. this man knows all games from all different genres and respects all aspects of gaming. im subscribing, if u are a true gamer or if u practice ninjitsu u would totally respect this guy and his videos. thanx 4 posting
God this game used to be my favorite when i was a kid

Really great review for a really great game, fantastic job, keep em coming!
4:28 i died because i used to make him dance to. hahahahaha
Wow it's been a long time. I wanna play it NOW!
I loved this game!!!! Had it for the megadrive
I love shooters that let you get in and out of vehicles. That's why I love games like Saint's Row, GTA4, and Scarface.
One of the best game soundtracks of all time! Yuzo Koshiro was the rock star of the gaming world back then. I miss the days when video game music was like this. The main Character's name is Joe Musashi. Its a common mistake many people make when they call him Shinobi. Shinobi is his title as a ninja.
Good times.
Shinobi III is one of the best games ever created.
Got it at a Car boot sale on the weekend and "Do do do doo do; I'm lovin it!"(!)
Childhood? I still play this on the emulators ;)
This really needs an HD remake for current consoles...
i Love this game i had it on the 6-Pak cartridge that came with my sega genesis
