As somebody who loves BOTH fighting games (SamSho in particular) and RPGs since the 90s when I discovered them as a kid, I would have been absolutely floored at the prospect of playing a SamSho RPG, and I know my friends would have also. What a missed opportunity that SNK never released an English version of this game back then, I really think it would have sold well. That said, I would still love to see them bring us this RPG today and would look forward to playing it if it ever manifests.
Also even though this game wasnt going to get close to Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, but the facts that (1) this is a fg branching out to the rpg genre, and (2) its a game set in ancient Japan (breaking away from the european fantasy cliche setting that was a very established concept in the early-mid 90s rpgs), makes it automatically a notable title. I think it would have caught some attention if it was translated at the time.
It's insane that so many games on the Saturn and Playstation have been translated and this one still remains elusive!
Although recently I noticed that the original English translator started up the project again!
He has a page to accept donations but I don't believe I can share the link here.
I bought the neo cd version, just for collecting...a rarity among the rare. Fingers crossed for a translation / remake
im hyped hyped!!. i appreciate your videos so much man.. day 1 🌾🙏🏼🌾
Played it, when it released back then on the Sega Saturn, its pretty good.
I just love those pen and ink sketches of the characters.
Beautiful stuff.
Thanks for the post.Never got to play this RPG 😮😮😮
I just started playing the english translation of this game today, man for the longest time it was my most wanted translation after I heard about it many years ago
Shippu no Reon would make an excellent edition to Samsho 2019 character rooster.
Samurai Spirits : Bushido Retsuden 😊❤❤
Also available on :
Japanese Saturn
Japanese Playstation.
One disc.
Never released in Europe. 😢🤡😡😠🤬
Ive had this for Saturn for many years but im still holding out for that English translation 🤞, it looks amazing!
it would be really awesome if SNK re-released samurai shodown RPG for modern consoles
I never played it. But it looks good. I hope to see an english release or a complete english fan translation in the future. I enjoyed the fan translation of Nakoruru: the gift she gave me.
You’re in luck; the English translation patch came out yesterday!
Such a shame this isn’t translated and on switch. I love Sam sho played it tons in my local arcade, Sam sho 2 broke my mind especially seeing the alien in the pot on gen-an stage and remember reading about this in the 90s game mags
ive never played it because theres no way to understand the storyy
Im glad and excited about the future project, but if you ask me, id rather see a new game with a turn based system. I think its a model with good potential and it particularly fits SS better. And whatever awkwardness may be found in the actual SS rpg, it can be excused by the gaming age when it was made. Like, even Final Fantasy 6 (released a year before SS rpg) had lots of clunkiness if judged by modern standards. But those early-mid 90s rpg making staples were gladly surpassed... like newer games on average not having a random encounter rate as high as the earliest games.
So a modern turn based rpg, following the modern standards of the genre, has the potential to deliver a good experience. It really isnt below the action rpg model to me. I dont believe action rpg is an obviously superior model for a franchise like SS.
This would have been Fire. I definitely would have played it, if it released back then. Here’s hoping to a rerelease one day.
I wouldn’t mind, playing this game or playing a game that’s very similar to it or plan a game, that project like this, just with a different title and art style, but it might as well be this game.
I would just play in Japanese because I understand it, but I can also understand French so this is a good situation in particular for me ahah
Well, somebody used Rosetta Stone. 😂😂😂
@@moeresse8812 haha I wish it was that easy! I was born in Montreal and I lived in Japan in my early 20s
Great!!
Thanks :)
They should bring some of the villains from this rpg to the new current fighting games
playing the english patch on my Steam Deck! been a fan of SS2 since I was kid so this is quite a gem! shoutout to ‘deuce’ for making this possible!
Good work. Nice amount of details about the game and the development history, which is always a very welcome part to be included. The recent very surprising news of the SS rpg project really was a good occasion for this kind of content.
I really hope the revived translation project for this game finally finishes as this gem has been left on Japan for too long and there has been various failed attempts to translate it for so long now that I almost gave up of it ever coming out. There is also that great Slayers RPG for the PS1 that also needs some love.
What a shame those Samurai Shodown RPGs weren't made in English.
Perhaps they will be made available for either the Nintendo Switch or Valve Steam Deck.
Really hope so! It is a great game!
English translation is out for Neo Geo CD!!!
This game is in legal limbo due to rights being split three ways, I think amid SNK, Asahi, and Fuji TV. It costs too much for SNK to pay fees to the other two to rerelease/localize.
I played the game in Playstation, but it was the japanese version. I barely spoke english back then, and was quite lost. Still, the very idea of a RPG game based in a SNK fighting game is so very dear to me. KOF KYO was a visual novel, but I also loved it. Have you made a video about it yet? If not, there's a good idea for a video! If yes, thanks mate!
It's crazy that this was considered a high priority project for SNK. Even some of the key Metal Slug staff have worked on it.
I remember reading about it in a PlayStation magazine long ago. I was so excited to play it someday....someday still hasn't come.
A remaster for the newer consoles released internationally would be awesome.
The pixel art is still top notch among JRPG.
I have this on the PlayStation long ago. Booted up and didnt exoect an actual RPG, was thinking this was just anither Samurai Showdown game at the time.
I want to play this game so much. OMG. PS1 ver, translated, would be awesome!
imagine a high quality street fighter 2 rpg released back in the day
I think all the most famous fgs can be translated to rpg. The thing is just that different battle systems fit each game properly. Like, i think Guilty Gear is a wonderful source for a rpg, like Samurai Shodown, but an action battle system like "Tales Of" suits GG better than SS.
I actually got this game last summer in Yokohama. Haven’t gotten around to playing it yet
I have a copy of this for ps1 thanks to the local retro shop in my area.. I never got to play it though.. Are they really making a new samsho rpg?
Remaster this in 2.5D like octopath traveller
They should release a PC version on Steam, the graphics are good enough to hold up as they are.
I was 18 when it was released. Now I am 44 and still waiting for a western release...
😆 the english translation is completed and now available to download & play. it brings back memories!
where do we download it?
Why you don’t show fighting mod?
Beautiful Game
Has anyone ever been able to put this game on an MVS or AES cartridge?
THANK YOU IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!! GLAD IME SUBBED
Thanks for subbing! And glad you are enojying the content!
This is cool but I'd rather see a Last Blade action/rpg or Bayonetta type game.
LB is also a great source for a rpg.
A decent game that was marred by horrendous load times.
I'll emulate it to play through what I'm able to understand but man, I really hope for a legit re-release with a full translation someday. Thanks for another great video.
It's coming. Less soon than I'd hoped, but I'm mostly waiting on the ASM hacker to tackle of couple of lingering issues.
Maybe an official release truly happens. We are currently in an age of gaming that's been looking back at the past a whole lot (maybe too much even). Endless waves of retro rereleases, retro collections, hd remasters or remakes of retro games, etc... That situation has its problems and its ok to criticise, but there are good sides too, like getting less accessible old games or literally getting Japan only old games.
This one definitely needs a english translation
English translation is out for Neo Geo CD!!!
If i run this game in a Neo Geo CD with unibios in spanish the game is in spanish too?
no :(
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
we need english translation for this game man!
English translation is out for Neo Geo CD!
I forgot this ever even existed, and it was awesome to finally hear anything more about this lost classic.great job. Subscribed
Thank you for the sub!
I love the RPG's design for Nakoruru..♥️
Ooooohhhh I remember playing this on PS1 back in the days it was good
I havea Neo-CD but never had the chance to buy/play it
I hope the samsho rpg would be like a soulsbourne rpg. Combat in a soulslike game is similar to samsho's methodical footsie paced combat.
I never made up my mind about what battle system would be better for a possible new Samsho rpg. Im mostly inclined to turn based system. But not the staple turn based system either way (Dragon Quest, Pokemon, Persona, etc). If its possible to make something more elaborate, where you can choose the strength of the attacks and the special moves, target specific body parts, etc.
This game is amazing , the only problem is it's not accessible since it's almost impossible to find a translated version of it
Thank you for this awesome video 😁
I played the game on PS1 and absolutely loved it. I hope the English translation gets completed one day. Thank you for the video. It's good to see this game getting some love. A big Like & Sub.
English translation is out for NeoG CD
I was so lucky to play Samurai Shodown rpg on the Playstation. It was amazing!
U finished the first scenario without understanding a single word in Japanese.
@@NeoGeoNow Yes, I am still waiting for the english version. I would buy a remake in a sec. I tried the same thing with KOF Kyo but it was pointless 😂 Samurai Shodown rpg looked amazing, no slash or bust variations. I finished the game with all the characters... omg, we re getting old
I always wanted to play this as a kid ... but I can't read a single japanese character. Wish the dude who translated it to french had also translated it to english 🥲. I'd totally buy a remaster though.
One of my faves
