So Clive is 100% alive. Besides all the other ridiculous amounts of symbolism we see in the sidequests, the wishing star, and their dialogue about saving each other, yarayrara, there is one thing i dont think anyone has pointed out??? Torgal's howling. This is a wolf's social call and is often used to help a lost pack member find its way home. He howls twice. He doesn't keep going mournfully. When the sun rises (which we already know the symbolism of it being Clive's return from Jill's sidequest dialogue)Torgal immediately stops howling and looks on expectantly. He goodest boi. He knows his best friend is coming back.
Its also hinted in Jill's statement with Clive, that every dawn, he came back again and again.
And dawns the sun, she was relieve. Thank fucking god I didnt get that at first.
Moongazing also says it in the lyrics.
Also hinted in the Harpocrates side quest. Tells Clive to think about writing after he’s finished fighting
And right before fighting Ultima, Clive says Joshua will be with him till the end.
The story is also being narrated by Clive.
The book we see at the end was written by Clive in his brothers name with the Quill Harpocrates gifted him.
In addition, Clive's left hand only turns to stone. This to me symbolizes the end of his life as a warrior. And as Harpocrates said, once he puts down his sword he has the quill to write about the events of the world.
The symbolism here is simply too much for Clive not to be alive.

Playing from the priceless quest all the way till the end I was bawling like a baby. Game was so damn beautiful and had some of my favorite moments of all time. My game of the year right here and one of my top games ever

One of the most untalked about things I love about this fight is that the Ifrit Risen and Ultima Risen boss fight incorporates the OG Theme of Final Fantasy into it and I find that beautiful.

more like an 8/10. The ending was garbage. Side quests were MMO-like, and the graphics were like a PS4 HD remake. RE4 is GOTY for me. Just because I haven't played TOTK yet.

The last dialogue reminds me alot of Endwalker
"To live is to suffer, to drink of calamity. It is a perilous path. Death lurks in the dark. Do not avert your eyes. See your life for what it is. See how the hardships make you strong, every doubt reforged as scales for your armor."
And Ultimas refusal to view their creations as people is why they chose that path, whereas if Ultima had accepted them as equals they could have worked together to oppose the blight.

Its bittersweet to know that we probably wont see Clive in any other form, dlc, or epilogue.

Here's some points to consider:
-First and foremost, Jill, her reaction at daybreak. If you saw/played through the flower field cutscene you'd know that to her daybreak means clive coming back to her. That's a symbolism and symbolisms are ALWAYS meaningful in FF games. Also the sigh of relief she made and the smile wouldn't exist if she saw anyone except clive. Jill herself is the biggest proof that clive survive and came back for her. On that same scene when we see the sun rising you can clearly see a boat slowly approaching the hideout on the middle-left of the screen if you pause on 38:51. It's between the 3 rocks. Pair that with Jill's reaction and it's pretty obvious that this is Clive coming back. It can't be joshua because 1) jill wouldn't be relieved to see joshua instead of clive she'd just weep more to the confirmation of losing her SO and 2) because we know phoenix can not revive dead people, it can only mend physical injuries. Clive made a last ditch attempt to save his brother but it was futile.
-Secondly there's the metia star. The wishing star that jill always prays to for clive's return. It's disappearance meant that jill's wish was finally granted. She initially misunderstood and started crying but upon going outside and seeing him come back she probably understood what happened. Metia granted jill's wish to bring back clive and it disappeared in doing so. The existence of the star and the fact that it grants wishes has been known and foreshadowed since the very start of the game where Jill was as always praying to it for Clive's safe return.
-Thirdly let's look at clive himself when he was at the shore. Due to exhausting his aether he starter turning into stone shown by his fingertips. It was NOT progressing on its own and it only got his entire hand when he tried to use magic. His hand was petrified and it stopped there. We've seen Cid losing his hand to petrification and the progression stopped there. We also saw cid lose his entire ARM to the petrification and it still didn't kill him. It's obvious that clive just lost a hand. Then he passed out due to exhaustion. A DLC idea would probably be clive's struggle to get back to the hideout.
-The after credits scene. We see two kids looking like clive and joshua. Those are clearly clive's descendents waaaay into the future and the book is most likely written by clive himself. He told hypocratus in a side quest when he gave him a pen that someday he will write something. THIS BOOK is the something that clive decided to write and he credited it in the name of his brother so that his name would not be lost in time. The exact same way he used Cid's name after his death. He did it to honour his fallen brother just like he did it to honour Cid.
-Lastly, the narrator of the story is clive. The beginning and the end it's always clive narrating the story making it seem as if he's retelling it to his kids or something. That just wouldn't exist if he died.
Honestly i wrote way more than what is needed. Anyone that has played more than 1 FF game would know that clive is alive simply by the "when the dawn breaks , you come back to me" jill line and the dawn in the ending. That symbolism is enough to know clive survived. Symbolisms aren't new in FF games and they are never unimportant.
Anyway if your headcanon says clive died so be it but that will always be headcanon. Too much proof says clive is alive at the end. It really sucks that due to this game's action nature it has attracted a crowd that's not used to FF's storytelling style and they all miss the clues and symbolisms and proceed to spread misinformation. I kinda hope the devs themselves made it a bit more clear for players that are not long-time FF fans and can pick up on the clues.
@@alexmei21 are you dumb? cues are not answer. What you're doing is coping on the what is the most likely scenerio. Go rewatch the finale and think real hard. The dev made it as clear as they want to so you can cope real hard.
There are 3 endings here.
1. Clive is alive.
2. Joshua is alive.
3. Both are alive.
It will now depend to your fantasy.
4. And dion is alive!
"With me Phoenix! Forevermore" damn this dialog hits different after that flashback of Joshua and Clive's lives together.

It wasn't everyone. It was the eikons inside clive encouraging him hence them calling him "child" or "son" since the eikons think of their hosts as their children.

Super love how Ultima is portrayed throughout the game. His typhon form seemed like a kind of Death Reincarnated, an impending doom of unfathomable nature. Then his second form(s) seemed to be deprived of all emotions, a creature of logic, his own kind of deadly self-serving logic. But his ultimate form showed so many emotions, fear, hatred, rage, denial etc that make him so like mortals despite his hatred for mortals. He tried so hard to deny it that it seems like his hatred and rage towards mortals is actually has hatred and rage towards himself, and because he cannot accept that he's flawed, he has to kill the world to prove it. A pitiable villain in the end, to me at least. IF he remained emotionless in the final fight, it wouldn't have been so novel worthy like it is here. I love this final battle and ending, even though it's a bittersweet type. 10/10.
Clive is definitely alive, the game devs gave all the clues throughout the story dialogues and especially in the side quests. Everyone's picking up some of the points here and there but to lay out the 7 points that basically prove Clive survived:
1. The final crying scene directly references the side quest dialogue. When is Jill crying the sun rises and she stops crying. This is after Jill and Clive have told each other how much they mean to one another in one of the side quests. During the side quest she mentioned how she would cry looking up at the stars at night during dark times. She tells him that no matter how sad and dark the night is, the sun will always return at dawn. And that she knows that Clive will always return to her.
2. Biology: Wolves howl in nature to communicate with their pack mates to tell them where they are and to guide them back. When Cid is dying in front of the group, Torguil whimpers to show remorse and sadness as but actually doesn’t howl even after Cid dies. So the fact that Torgal is howling instead of whimpering is indicative of Clive being alive.
3. The last thing Clive tells Jill is no more broken promises. He had promised her he would return to her no matter what. And we all know Clive is a man who honors his word.
4. Clive tells Harpocrates that after his quest/journey is done he will put down the sword and take up the pen
5. In the final fight with ultima at the end. Ultima tells Clive that 'this resistance is a fantasy he clings to'. Clive tells him that the only one living in a fantasy is ultima and that “this would be his final fantasy” (before Clive finally kills him). In the ending post credits scene, the book is titled “Final Fantasy”. The only one to mention that term was Clive in final battle and he was alone there. So no way Joshua would just happen by coincidence to title it the same thing considering it was based off a isolated conversation between ultima and Clive
6. When Cid died, Clive takes up his mantle and go by his name to honor the life he gave and what he stood for. So in the secret ending cutscene with the book author saying Joshua Rosfield, this would make perfect sense for Clive to do in order to honor his brothers memory.
7. If you 100% the game, the secret ending also has one dialogue line during the final fantasy book scene of audio of Clive giving the final narration saying “and that was the end of the journey”. Which is confirmation by itself that Clive lived to chronicle the story.
So Joshua Stays Dead?

Guy's just making stuff up and pulling from reddit and like so many missed the whole point of the scene where Clive remembers the day his brother was born and being given the 'gift of the phoenix' which he returns to Joshua.
seems like a lot of people really didn't understand Clive, or just can't accept that the ending was shown to them. being the older brother who protected his younger brother was the core of who he was.

@@LeesDeeds I think Josh reincarnates, he is literally the phoenix after all. He gives Clive a literal phoenix down who appears to absorb it (it just vanishes after 13:33), and then we see him use some sort of phoenix power on Joshua's body (it does come from other hand, though). In the flashback we see that the baby looks exactly the same as the baby born at the same time in the hideaway (although, we do not get to see the baby's eye color but they mention that it is a boy). The "Clive renames himself to Josh the same way he renamed himself to Cid" seems like a real stretch to me... I do believe Clive lives, though, given that he narrates the book in the start and the end plus the parallels to dialogue in some of the sidequests.
"But where one Journey ends..." another Begins, true words to come by as well to any wonderful story in a world of Fantasy for this is like any other. This story never ends, and I'm glad. 😄

The ending is sooo similar to FFX but instead of ending it with a monologue about moving forward, it ends quietly with a piano as everyone cries their eyes out over their best friend dying. I loved it! The saddest shit I’ve seen in years! What a great game!
Clive is dead. The pace at which the "Curse", the petrification, is setting in, is alarmingly fast if you all haven't been paying attention. One minute, it's only his fingertips, the next, it has spread to his entire hand. He's dying at a rapid pace, the red star next to the moon dimming is symbolism that Clive has passed away. Everyone would love for Clive to survive and live a full life, but the simple fact of the matter is that Clive has sacrificed himself so everyone else could have their 'tomorrow'.
That's the tragedy of his story, and that's what makes it bittersweet. You can keep coming up with excuses to deny the truth or find symbolism which might suggest he returns, but the petrification is incurable as they have demonstrated throughout the story. And it is how he meets his end. Honestly, that brings a lot more gravitas to the ending and to Clive's entire journey than him just dusting off his coat and walking back home.
This. I keep seeing people claim there is a boat at the ending shot when the sun rises, but I cant for the life of me find it. I love Clive and want him to live, but his death brining a new tomorrow for those he loves adds so much to this ending.

Ultima called Clive, Logos a few times. Supposedly Ultima locked away Logos, so said to Clive "Is this Logos? Have you truly become free?" The name comes from Greek word Logos, the intermediary between God and the Cosmos. Explains why Clive can control all the Eikons too, he has within him divine power, so he could very well be immune to death
No. It's stated in the games lore diary that logos and mythos are the same thing. Mythos is if clive doesn't gain free will and becomes a successful vessel for Ultima and clive become logos is when clive gains free will and turns against Ultima. Ultima started calling clive logos after Ultima realized he couldn't possess Clive's body.
The post credits book by "Joshua" seems to be the strongest evidence Clive survived.
Joshua states very clearly in the game that the power of the Phoenix cannot resurrect someone, so Joshua could not have been resurrected by Clive and survive to write the book. Then the only person that would write the book in Joshua's name is Clive. This perfectly ties in to Clive's promise to Harpocrates to write a book about his journey, and how the story begins and ends with Clive narrating with an author's voice.

The game broke my heart. I have just completed it. I feel extremely sorry for Clive. He chose to never see the world he was trying to build for the ones he loved. I wish he was more selfish, I wish he wasn’t ready to sacrifice himself. Did the fate really fall? Or was it indeed Clive’s purpose from the start? Can’t stop crying right now. I hate and love SE at the same time for this masterpiece

I have just found out I missed an important side quest - Priceless, which gives a lot of foreshadowing of Clive being alive in the end. Damn, made conclusions too soon and mentally destroyed myself
I didnt even do the sidequests bro. You're telling me I have to do 11 SIDEQUESTS BEFORE THE END!?!? I was already tired of doing them before, but sight of 11 little green exclamation marks all around the map just before the final mission had me ALL the way fucked up.
I'll go and complete them later though. I can't leave them unfinished like that. Even though I have my gripes, most of the sidequests of this game are really wonderful narratively.
Wait, what exactly about Priceless alludes to Clive being alive?
@@SuperSaiyan3985 In the Priceless sidequest, Jill's dialogue is symbolic foreshadowing. "I realized that no matter how terrible the night, the dawn will always come. That you will always come. For me. And you have. Again and again." In it, she also says to Clive "You are my treasure." In the ending, Torgal stops howling as the sun rises, and Jill stops crying, gasping, and then giving a smile. It is a representation that the dawn symbolizes his return, because "no matter how terrible the night, he will still come back for her." The last lyrics of this end song that play just as the sun rises are "My treasure, my star" once again referring to this sidequest.
To add more, there is a lot of implication that the book in the post credits scene is written by Clive with Joshua as an alias. Not only does Harpocrates wish that Clive will write a first hand account of his journey, gives him a very special quill to do so, the title is Final Fantasy which are Clive's words to Ultima, and Clive is heard narrating the beginning and ending of the game, but there is one last definitive hint for only the most obsessive completionist. The single Platinum trophy of the game has the description of "And thus does our journey end" which is his last narrative words after the sunrise scene. The name of the Platinum trophy? The Chronicler. By definition, this is an author who writes of important historical events.
With DLC now practically confirmed, I would say it's even harder now to argue he dies than he lives, as we were never given a death scene and only his hand experienced lithification.

I don't think anyone else pointed this out but at the very end when you have to mash the button when he hits his face and overall this whole boss fight reminds me just of how asura's wrath final boss was exactly the same way their creator god and he killed him in the same way the way asura killed Chakravartin

Man those attacks, the MUSIC and the background/atmosphere for this battle are absolutely mind blowing! So incredibly beautiful when playing on a Mini LED TV which gets absurdly bright, and the HDR implementation of this game is fantastic!
I come from Reddit post about the Malaysia event and someone got Koji Fox confessing he cried while making the ending. Yoshi-P just smiled when asked about a DLC.

If so, what do the updated Active Time Lore entries say about Dion and Joshua? Does the Active Time Lore say whether Dion and/or Joshua were killed?

Two things surprised me this game: The Victory Fanfare has lyrics now and THIS moment being a title drop! No Final Fantasy game, that I know of, has used the title until this one!

@@jonasfadi8213 The overall color of the environment of whole game is darker, but they use very bright colour, keep blinking, changing color, sometimes you can't even see where you are during the fight, most importantly the boss fight is long, it don't give your eyes a rest. The final boss had this issue, very obvious. I know they want to show off their visual effect, but it's too much.

I can't be the only Granblue player who practically fell out of their seat when I realized Ultima's designs were a hard nod to Lucilius HL. When he turned into blue fire and his name changed to Ultimalius, the hype levels were off the charts lmao
Purposefully intended open ending I would say, but a lot bittersweet(betting that the chance of him being alive is 1 out of 100). It all comes down to the main theme(is what I think) of this game, "hope". It is well implicated in the last scene where Clive is talking to dying Ultima. He talks about though humanity is imperfect, it's who they are and when all the sin and suffering come from such defect, it's this defect that makes them still march on; though they see the horizon ever out of reach, certain that answers lie just beyond it. And we have a word "hope" for describing such demeanor. The only thing that differs between one and another is whether one choose to accept or not the outcome and embrace the succession of it, which we may call it life, as it is.
When there are so many implications implying 99 out of 100 that he be dead, there are quite a few subplots and question marks still leading to hopes of him being alive. I mean, if the studio was well pinpoint on making him dead, why did the petrification started so slowly after him showing up on shore. He used up so much of his aether and yet petrification so slow. I thought he would wash up on shore already half petrified. Maybe we couldn't see it because he wasn't half naked but why hide it if the studio was dead serious on making him dead? Now, wouldn't making the gamers begging for his return and reuniting with Jill be a better way to emphasize its theme? So don't be discouraged by what the end of our hero looks like.
You mentioning Jill reminds of me what they did with Noctis and Luna in 15, they deserved better even tho we can only see the good ending in that stupid book they made after the game, hope they have a story DLC where Clive comes back to see Jill again

It's REALLY obvious that he's alive though ... I'll just paste what i've been saying for a while now.
-First and foremost, Jill, her reaction at daybreak. If you saw/played through the flower field cutscene you'd know that to her daybreak means clive coming back to her. That's a symbolism and symbolisms are ALWAYS meaningful in FF games. Also the sigh of relief she made and the smile wouldn't exist if she saw anyone except clive. Jill herself is the biggest proof that clive survive and came back for her. On that same scene when we see the sun rising you can clearly see a boat slowly approaching the hideout on the middle-left of the screen if you pause on 38:51. It's between the 3 rocks. Pair that with Jill's reaction and it's pretty obvious that this is Clive coming back. It can't be joshua because 1) jill wouldn't be relieved to see joshua instead of clive she'd just weep more to the confirmation of losing her SO and 2) because we know phoenix can not revive dead people, it can only mend physical injuries. Clive made a last ditch attempt to save his brother but it was futile.
-Secondly there's the metia star. The wishing star that jill always prays to for clive's return. It's disappearance meant that jill's wish was finally granted. She initially misunderstood and started crying but upon going outside and seeing him come back she probably understood what happened. Metia granted jill's wish to bring back clive and it disappeared in doing so. The existence of the star and the fact that it grants wishes has been known and foreshadowed since the very start of the game where Jill was as always praying to it for Clive's safe return.
-Thirdly let's look at clive himself when he was at the shore. Due to exhausting his aether he starter turning into stone shown by his fingertips. It was NOT progressing on its own and it only got his entire hand when he tried to use magic. His hand was petrified and it stopped there. We've seen Cid losing his hand to petrification and the progression stopped there. We also saw cid lose his entire ARM to the petrification and it still didn't kill him. It's obvious that clive just lost a hand. Then he passed out due to exhaustion. A DLC idea would probably be clive's struggle to get back to the hideout.
-The after credits scene. We see two kids looking like clive and joshua. Those are clearly clive's descendents waaaay into the future and the book is most likely written by clive himself. He told hypocratus in a side quest when he gave him a pen that someday he will write something. THIS BOOK is the something that clive decided to write and he credited it in the name of his brother so that his name would not be lost in time. The exact same way he used Cid's name after his death. He did it to honour his fallen brother just like he did it to honour Cid.
-Lastly, the narrator of the story is clive. The beginning and the end it's always clive narrating the story making it seem as if he's retelling it to his kids or something. That just wouldn't exist if he died.
Honestly i wrote way more than what is needed. Anyone that has played more than 1 FF game would know that clive is alive simply by the "when the dawn breaks , you come back to me" jill line and the dawn in the ending. That symbolism is enough to know clive survived. Symbolisms aren't new in FF games and they are never unimportant.

Clive is dead - he turned to stone which we learn throughout the game is what happens to bearers, in both main and side quests, over-using their magic powers. About Metia, in the Active Time Lore text it says that Metia is messenger of wish to the moon and heavens. Metia granted Jill's wish once when they were sleeping in Lady Hanna's barn and had a talk if they remember moongazing when they were kids/teens. Jill said that Metia granted her prayers , returned Clive to her, and the heavens must have a plan for them both - the star IS THERE and SHINING beside the moon. Now in the ending, the star FADES meaning it can no longer bring message(wishes) to the moon and it meant it can no longer grant Jill's wish. This is why she cried. Even Gav cried because he knew of Clive's fate and told the baby that his generation is now free (thanks to Clive and Cid). The new baby being born and the dawn symbolize new hope for the new generation, no more slaves. This is what Yoshi-P meant about hope. With this context for the ending, it's Jill forcing herself to smile for Clive so his death will not be in vain. It's bittersweet actually considering he promised to return... but didn't.
The book "Final Fantasy" written by "Joshua Rosfield" at the epilogue doesn't have to be written by Clive or Joshua themselves. We have several side character scholars from Hideaway who are introduced as story collectors/archivers - they are Harpocrates and Vivian. We can also see them teaching a lot of kids and values the importance of history. It can be a biography of the people who wanted to preserve the legacy of the brothers and their gift of freedom. The story's main theme is - "Legacy" to pass it down through generations.
We can only hope for DLCs for more conclusive end
clive is definitely alive lol. only thing that turned to stone was his hand, and then he passed out. Even with the side quests and main story its evident that he's alive given the fact that the story is told in his perspective. there's a lot more to consider but i don't feel like explaining it all.

And Clive drained his magic so ...? Common sense. It was even shown it started from his finger tips and rapidly spread to his while left damn hand.
Don't start me with the side quests because those are supposed to be empty/failed promises. Joshua - failed to protect. Jill - failed to return. But the good side was he is able to save the world and bring back the sun again. The sun was gone after we beat bahamut/dion and the NPCs believe it's the end of the world, but some Clive is alive believers mistook it as the dawn when in fact it's not. Tell me you only watched and not played the game without telling me lol
@@aileene-ez9gx im pretty sure that was Joshuas book, the kids mention bahamut and ifrit both eikons that died during that battle and it kind of feel like that joshua would focus on them over himself in a book written by himself.

I mean, clive has flashbacks about protecting joshua before he use the phoenix hand to revive him. if joshua was dead there then the scene make no sense, and clive had no power left at that moment. in fact, it was clive being the older brother and protector of joshuas which was the reason he choose to give up his own body to save his brothers. so yeah, that someone else wrote a book and named it final fantasy by joshua rosfield is bonkers to me, that was his book. Also it fit in with being the phoenix as a metaphor, you know "rebirth" and being revived.

Magic is still around but is only present with the dominants which is only clive now lol. Dominants are the only people who can use magic without the crystals. The mark bearer don't have to have a crystal with them to use magic but they still need crystals to exists since they channel their power through the mother crystals. The dominants channel their power straight from the aether which is in nature.

As for the book Clive probably used Joshua's name much like how he took up Cid's name so his brother's memory isnt forgotten and is honored.
As for the book being treated as a legend FFT did this a LOT where stories that were true got turned into myth and legend because they had been around so long.
Keep in mind FFT was mentioned as the story writers favorite FF and it did this for its ending with people wondering if Ramza survived since he was left in an airship graveyard under the sea with no known way out but it was confirmed he did get out and he was present as the fake funeral before leaving ivalice with Alma.

I love this bossfight. The way it scales up is so awesome. The epicness starts off as like a 4/10 then cranks it up to a solid 7 with Ultimate Risen. After that it becomes an easy 10/10. Then they decide to dial it up to a 38 with the final phase

Can't help but smirk at how they made the very last blow you deal against Ultima be a guaranteed 999,999 damage...even though you deal far more in some of the Eikon fights. Maybe if they tacked on an extra 9 (making it 9,999,999 damage) it would have really felt awesome.
This is basically an older version of Squall with his Dog. Combine with Devil May Cry and Asura Wrath. Square Enix must of seen how Lost Soul Aside was combining everything and took that idea lol.

I'm with those who believe that the game clearly points out that he's not dead as a reward for completing all the side quests, but seeing the ending for the first time i felt like if he really did die, so it would be SO (!!!) unfair to Jill. Like if he really chose to die and died, then it's his choice at least. To be a hero, to be a saviour. But the girl is the second important character in the game and everything she's ever wanted to be with him again, she did nothing wrong and didn't choose otherwise at the end... So it would mean that she's the one left fool at the end, idk. Joshua was doomed from the start, like surely they'd kill him again, like they did in the begging. He also didn't have any clear motive of his own after reunion. But Clive and Jill wanted to build a better world to live there together. So Clive's death would have been tragic, yes, but from his perspective at least his final choice, but from hers... Totally unfair and unexplainable. Like i said, she would have been left the one and only fool in this game. But why? So it's the other reason to doubt he died
i beaten the game and i was so happy this final fantasy was so amazing and an amazing job square did with this game i know for a fact clive could be alive for certain but maybe he didn’t we leave it to our own expectations clive x jill is the best i too wanted them to have a happy ending 😢
