I have been watching your videos for years now. I have redone the drywall in my entire house All ALONE!! I’m so good at it that when I got the pro in to do the cornice he tried to hire me 😂 you have saved me thousands! Thankyou!! Now I’m off to watch your corner bead vids…
Hi Ben. I watched 4 other videos but you were the only one that probably explain which side of the tape to apply against the wall. That was a very important detail. Thanks.
I love how there is an art to taping and mudding. There’s so much more to it then just throwing globs of the shit on the wall and pushing paper strips into it. I always appreciate a good tradesman when I see one, especially if I’ve had experience trying it myself. And you definitely know what you’re doing. Thanks for the instructional videos.
I will always appreciate a good tradesperson too. Construction and the trades are much harder and require much more skill than they receive credit for!
Thank you! If today I’m able do do my drywall, taping, mudding etc. then it’s because of you. Best tutorials ever! So comprehensively , to the point and nice to watch.
Thank you so much for your education work! I can't believe how much I have learned from you in the last 24 hours prepping for my project! From a frustrated homeowner who has done it wrong more than right, seriously, THANK YOU!
Thank you! I'm doing my attic now. Your videos are really helpful. Here in Poland it is kind of "abnormal" to use paper tape on joints. I bought quite expensive german-made mud which is designed to use without taping. I think you Canadians (and craftsmen from the USA) know drywall best, so I decided to use paper tape though. Blah blah blah :) Thank You!
Nice work mate. I've been a carpenter for 20 years, and have done most things in the building industry .You have great skills and a brilliant way of explaining how to carry out these tasks..Great work mate !
He explains so clear n deep that now i get guts to do it by myself all my work. Thank you apart than this he looks soosmart beautiful with nice voice I feel keep watching all his videos.
Kevin Kenney lmfao same here! My mud was too thick as well. My tape kept getting air pockets underneath. So I had to come back to Vancouver Carpenter’s channel. Now I know why! I’m just remodeling a room. I’m no pro.
Thank you Ben!!! I've watched more than a dozen of your videos, and they are spot on. I'm patching a 6 foot crack in my ceiling that happened in the summer, it's now November 🙂 I've been watching your videos for a good amount of time and finally built up enough confidence to tackle the job. Cut out the joint and filled it, it looks great don't need any sanding before doing the tape. You make everything look so easy, thanks, look forward to finishing the job...
Complete noob here, bought PB paper tape today thinking it was "sticky back".... On opening it I though WTF do I do with this? Quick look at YT shows me this well presented and concise explanation. Well its more involved that I thought, but I'll have my "jointing compound" tomorrow, and we'll see how it goes. Thanks for the excellent vid.
Thank you for an excellent quality video that identifies the key performance requirements and the techniques for achieving those requirements. Your teaching style is one of the best that I’ve seen on TH-cam. You’re a real professional in every way!
Onnce i worked for home inprovment man and every one always say the taper and mud guy is most valued skill on the crew it almost a art form ive seen some amazing work and seen some work that would of ben better with out mud at all it was so bad guy i was just working with is going to teach me and he dose awsome job
Also not prefillong especially on ceilings where there are any gaps in meetups trying to fill cracks while taping instead of filling first will cause saggage in the tape line down the seems. Very important step, it will form a beer belly if not
As for the ends of tape, I tend to wipe inwards, toward the center. Carefully the first few times to bond the tape, then harder to flatten it out. Tiny joints (less than 4 inches) I've found its best to prefold, then flatten again your tape, then back-butter the tape on your hawk. Bond it to the wall with your fingers and then wipe out with your blade, it doesn't slide. I use CGC beige all purpose lite, for most plaster work, for full clarity.
Nice video. I have done a lot of dry wall work around my house and I never new that the crease of the tape needs to go against the wall. Makes sense. Thanks for sharing this.
Its definitely an art. I was horrible at it. After some trial and error on my own, im still horrible at it but able to make it look good. Just caused myself alot of extra sanding. These videos are top notch to help you learn
That was pretty good! Nice, friendly, good looking man helping me to finally understand what the hell drywall taping is and how I might actually proceed!
There is no doubt this man has experience and talent, my first attempt was to say politely, absolutely horrible but after 6 hours I got the hang of it.
Bout to do some drywall taping and puttying tomorrow for my boss. I already told him I know how to do it thanks to this video lol. Here's to making a lil extra cash on the side!
Thank you for this video. This was my first time doing drywall patch and hadn't a clue how to use paper tape that hadn't any "sticky". Patched a medicine cabinet hole and made a HOT MESS of it, but it will be covered by a flush wall cabinet lol. Least I got the tape right due to your help.
In case Ben doesn't see this soon, here's my novice input: If you can spare the time, let it dry hard. I've accidentally gouged out slightly damp prefill when taping corners. I've also seen Ben tape over quickset that's firm but not dry.
Hello Ben! I am an avid follower. I love your approach in teaching us DIY'ers. You articulate detail very good, include humor, and if I had to guess, you are educated past HS. Just a guess. I love your style. You leave no (sheet) rock unturned. I'm impressed! But I have a problem that isn't addressed in an internet search, youtube, or any online media. I really hope you can find the time to help me out. I had/have a factory joint crack 8ft long adjoining/adjacent to a 4ft butt crack on one piece of textured knockdown vaulted ceiling drywall. Where those two cracks met, I also had a field crack, which broke off once I removed paint, mud, tape, & tape bedding mud, down to original DW seam. So in that corner where the 2 cracks met, where field crack cut cattiecorner to the 2 joint cracks, I cut out a 23-13/16th square patch shaped from a 2ftx2ft patch from Lowe's. Soooo, the factory joint seam is not great, but ok, along 8ft side. Original DW guy was a bad aim with hammering DW nails. And I dont know what he was nailing DW to, except air. But along the butt edge, minus my patch, he ran out of 2x4 joist, and again nailed DW to air most of 2x4 width. Hanging joint! This 4ft butt crack, minus my 2ftx2ft patch, both butts, are spotty cracked & broken. Again, his hammer aim was off. If I cut out installed DW, there's no guarantee the next joist over will be any better. Could be an endless loop, catch 22. So how do you butt next to damaged DW? Remove loose pieces, make my butt, then prefill with quickest before taping? Is there a better solution? I'm all ears.
Hey man I really like your content very educational for someone new to the trade. Looking forward to seeing more videos on sanding and painting perhaps? Keep up the great work!

@@vancouvercarpenter do you have any advice for repairing plaster cracks (wood lath and plaster) in an old house? It's been stable for years. Can I just mud over it, or use tape? Should I carve out a notch in the crack? Thx
Accurate, short and to the point. Excellent video. Now, how do you put drywall on your ceiling when it is repair between a single pair of joists (16 inches center to center... after removing galvanized pipe) ?
what I do is cut 2x4s 2 inches larger than the opening and place into the cavity, and turn them perpendicular, then I screw the 2x4 though the existing drywall. place these every 16 inches, now you can cit a new piece of drywall to fit the gap and and screw it to the 2x4s you just installed. Mud, tape , sand and paint. good luck.
Awesome tutorial! thank for sharing. What sequence are seams/angles/butts tapped? Is the tapered seam tapped first? Or the inside or outside angle? or butts? Thanks
Thank you for doing all these videos. It really helps us new to the trade. Question, after you set the tape like you did at the end of the video, do you let that dry before you apply more mud over the tape?
Hi Ben - first off thank you. Your skill & dedication to helping others is amazing and has helped us embark on our own journey of home renovation in France. Have you done any videos of the butt joint process after the paper has been applied? I. E. 2nd & 3rd mud coats with feathering?
What purpose does putting a thick coat over the paper tape serve? Isn’t the surface of the drywall paper? What problems might I run into if I laid the paper tape, let it dry, skimmed it over top super thin to fill any unevenness and used a 6” knife to feather from the edge/height of the tape to the wall? I’m not great at feathering and such and am wondering if essentially being able to see the tape through my thin, but smooth coat would cause any problems. I’m also thinking that keeping it that thin over the tape will keep the seem less raised from the wall and require less of a feather. Thanks and awesome videos. I’ve watched a ton of them already.
Thank you for the lesson. I have been watching videos like crazy on this subject. I live in a mobile home and on the walls are strips of cheap ugly wood that hides the joints. Well, I'm going to fix the whole house. A big project for someone like me with no experience. As I started putting mud on the first joint I noticed grooves being created in the mud. WTF? Investigating I noticed the paint was coming off the wall as I put the mud on. Then I realized there is wallpaper. You can scratch the paint off of the wallpaper. What do I do in this situation? Should I use a primer first?
Take all wall paper off and skim coat it all after I'm in same boat as u buddy lol u should see the nightmare I'm in lmao I'm thinking of going over it with qtr inch lol
going to try tape, as have always used mesh. i take it that "taping mud" is equivalent to "jointing cement" here in australia. cheers for the crease tip.
Hi Ben, I watched most of your drywall application videos, amazing, but the only thing I couldn't find is how to deal with joint between new built drywall and an existing ceiling. I'm doing an addition at my house and really wanted to know that. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the great videos. I have just done my first two butt joints and I'm getting bubbles. First time I did not thin down the mud, second time I did a bit. Overall my mud started to dry rather quickly. What is happening? It's a mess, this is harder than I expected!

It’s really interesting how different drywalling is in different countries and how local the crafts still are. I am from germany (carpenter, architect...and skater) and its so different. I loved the round corners i saw in canada. Over here, drywalling is totally connected with insulating and vapor barriers, you don’t do that, do you?
As I understand it here in western Canada, the building envelope ends at the vapour barrier on the inside of the building. Thusly materials such as drywall are protected from the elements. I am curious as to how you see drywall as connected to the building envelope.
All these years of working with sheetrock as a hobby and never knew it mattered what side to use. I always use the wrong side because it was just easier I guess.
Need advice here… what if I have a drywall that has a flat joint on one end and is up against a butt joint? Just prefill, or do I cut out a bit of the edge to the butt joint before prefilling?
Do you still need to cut the v shape and pre-fill if you've placed the boards with a suitable 1/8" gap between the boards or would that be ok to not pre-fill?

me too I hope the outside it'll roll is the part that goes on the wall I'll see tomorrow
Can sheet rock 45 be used as pre filler? Also can the joint be touching or should there be a gap between the drywall?
Paper tape is fuzzy one side smooth on the other side? Is that why you put the bend toward the wall? Just curious 🤔
Pre filling with wick set is a good idea
i cut out a square hole in my drywall ceiling 33 inches long 17 inches wide! Can i use spackling to fill and tape the butt joints?
Need advice here… what if I have a drywall that has a flat joint on one end and is up against a butt joint? Just prefill, or do I cut out a bit of the edge to the butt joint before prefilling?
Do you still need to cut the v shape and pre-fill if you've placed the boards with a suitable 1/8" gap between the boards or would that be ok to not pre-fill?
I watch your skateboarding tutorials and now i need to learn how to drywall😂
