It's easy to answer: the tuning in those times was lower, and the strings made in gut, so the instruments were less brilliant but more resonant, even those doscret "continuo" tiorbas and other plucked instruments have a lot of bass open strings who resonate plenty. Also, the music was conceived for small, resonant spaces, like churches, and is in a church that this performance, as it should, is taking place.

Overall I find his orchestral works to be lacking, especially compared to the rest of his music. Bach's music is very structural and thus, orchestration doesn't matter much, which is in direct opposition with the very idea of the symphony + he was a baroque composer and symphonies aren't really compatible with how baroque composers thought about music.
There is a joke among musicians here in Croatia. I apologise if it sounds sacrilegious, it's just a joke. When Mozart died Saint Peter welcomed him in Heaven and took him to meet God. As they slowly made their way Mozart was thrilled to hear the heavenly sounds of what he thought was the most beautiful music one could imagine. It was Heaven's choir and orchestra. Thinking this he met the Lord and the Lord said unto him: "Oh Mozart! I am very pleased you're here. You will be in charge of the ensemble." And Mozart, a little bit confused, responded: "I would be most honored, oh Lord. But... Do I deserve such a position? I mean, isn't Bach around somewhere?" And God looked at him calmly and said: "I'm Bach." ☺ 😁
@@margaretharypkema9290 I guess the Leipzig councelors who deplored that the 4 best candidates had preferred other positions and they had to be content with the mediocre Bach, or Scheibe's attack on Bach, whose music was "too complicated and bombastic" represent some of the many testimonies to the fact that most people didn't understand...
For sure the best interpretation so far of this section of the Passion. My only comment is that , for some reason, all interpreters favour slow tempi for Bach's religious works. I think that lifting the tempo somewhat would be valuable.

Notice the always present pulsating base tempo (the fire amber) from start to the end... and the voices are the flames and sometimes one spikes higher than the rest of the flames(the soprano)
....you should be! And Germany of her illustrious son!
Tarkovsky’s Mirror brought me here…that combination of memory and nature is perfect for a Bach piece.
Absolutely Stunning in dreadful & viscous sorrow!
Could you please upload this to Spotify? Please please please, pretty please!! This is my favourite version
Imagine Bach would have written Symphonies. It would have absolutely dwarfed every other composer ever (maybe with exception of Beethoven)
One of the greatest interpretations I’ve ever heard. Leave it to the Dutch. The acoustics in that cathedral don’t hurt either! 😉
Amazing beautiful! Praise God, Almighty! 🙏💖
A wonderful ,excellent performance .The best one.
Superb orchestra and choir interpretation. Perhaps the best that I heard so far. Bravissimo to the orchestration and fantastic voices.Bravissimo!!!!!
Thermonuclear opening...
I love the tempo of the opening choir.
oh, so wonderful, thank you
Bach is simply God transcribed into music.
DESLUMBRANTE, GENIAL, ES TAN BELLA Y POTENTE LA INTERPRETACIÓN
QUE MÍ EMOCIÓN SE DISPARA Y CUESTA RESPIRAR.
GRACIAS DESDE MÉXICO.
What an amazing video, thank you for spreading the magic of the human beings
J.S. Bach was 200-300 years of his time...
No wonder people of his time did not understand.
More than that. People are still trying to understand Bach today.
Who says they didn't understand...?
@@margaretharypkema9290 I guess the Leipzig councelors who deplored that the 4 best candidates had preferred other positions and they had to be content with the mediocre Bach, or Scheibe's attack on Bach, whose music was "too complicated and bombastic" represent some of the many testimonies to the fact that most people didn't understand...
There’s probably no progress in art and music. See the cave paintings.
Bach unser Herrscher!
Transcendental; both in conception and realization.
MAGNIFICENT SPACE PERFORMANCE.
This gives me chills
2023 still realy good !
Nice !!!
The ending is perfect
Love the use of Baroque instruments!
Sounding like heaven....loved it
Great masterpiece, good performance...
Sooo many goosebumps what an entrance wow!!
In één woord: fantastisch.
After a while it seems as if the singers and musicians entered some sort of trance state.
This is epic.
So great¡¡¡¡¡ so coOl¡¡¡¡ congratulations from México¡¡¡
Beautiful
JSB composing twentieth century music alla Ligeti .. unbelievable!
Umieram... Umieram!! Czy jest jest coś piękniejszego, niż Bach? Niż Jego Pasje i cała reszta? Brakuje słów, by opisać ten... odlot..
For sure the best interpretation so far of this section of the Passion. My only comment is that , for some reason, all interpreters favour slow tempi for Bach's religious works. I think that lifting the tempo somewhat would be valuable.
I actually prefer the slower tempo. It adds to the tension and suspense for me.
EXCELLENT !!!! BRAVO!!
