This song makes me feel so nostalgic. And it sums up a lot of what my life is. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' music has been there for me through the good and the bad. I don't know what I'd do without it.

I just about had a breakdown after hearing of Tom's death.!Iirc, I think I initially heard of him in Trouser Press not long after his debut came out on Shelter Records. I ended up picking that LP up on a whim before it had received any airplay in the U.S. and I think I played "American Girl" about 50 times that day because I loved the Byrdsy tinge to it. I was hooked after that, of course.
I only saw him live once, at the Santa Monica Civic with David Johansen opening on the You're Gonna Get it tour. It was a great gig and I had excellent seats to boot!
Arguably even more so than with Springsteen, Petty was America's best post-Dylan and post-Joni Mitchell singer/songwriter and, at a time when pop music is just overthought and dumbed down manufactured crap, losing a qiant like Petty at such a young age is downright tragic. He definitely elevated the art form and for that we music fans will always be grateful.

This song gets better and better the older I get - the meaning shape shifts over time - a classic. Seems about America the country now - not just some young girl - America is the young girl....and the dream has always been a myth - always just out of reach as a country. thanks Mr. Petty.

      +teej
petty said stan's drums and voice at shows was the best in the world....
the problem with stan was his life-of-the-party-type-egoist-jerk persona.
(can we all say david lee roth)
      petty just out-grew that scene.

    • @christinemcginnis8659

      @80spenn37 5 ปีที่แล้ว

According the Zanes, Stan also asked for a bigger cut of the pie (maybe not directly) and Tom didn’t like that...just another one of the reasons why Tom parted ways with him, it seems.

Notice the beat is off on purpose. I heard it's a challenge to sing, or play together that way, but it sounds fantastic. I think Stevie Nicks or Fleetwood had a song that was off beat like this, too, and it was a hit. I can't think of the name of it at the moment. Just a brilliant song!

Tom Petty has the most Beautiful Sexy Eyes ever !!! Just look at his long silky hair.
So much energy with a positive message to all of us in the lyrics of his many songs (gifts) he has given to us. Any man would have loved to walk in his shoes, but too many are not worthy. Any negative comments are out of envy.
Ignore them as Petty has done. He had a Heart of Gold & gave that to us.
A Beautiful Man Indeed ! We love him so much, RIP Tom, You Are Missed So Much 😚😔

A lot of musicians at his level play to gratify themselves. Tom Petty was trying to share an experience with us. I'm wrong a lot, but the best music is honest, and this man had that. A true artist. A communicater. A guy that could make everyone feel like he wrote a song just for them. Not a hint of pretentiousness, but totally aware he was special and like us at the same time. He believed in music. He made that so obvious. When a celebrity passes it usually doesnt effect me, but this guy took you on a trip with every song...made you feel like everything would work out...rappers, doctors, punk rock kids, anybody could get lost in a Tom Petty song. He's a guy that i truly believe if he never made a dime off music would have continued to make it.
"The ability to master music is to be able to do anything you want and then not do it." - Chopain (probably spelled that name wrong).
We all had access to the same words...but he could take a sentence and say something everyone felt but just couldnt find the words. Truly special. Glad I got to share a planet with this guy for a little bit.

They say here in Gainesville it's in part about a U. of Florida college girl who lost or never got the guy she wanted and committed suicide by jumping off her sorority balcony on the second floor down onto Highway 441 (called 13th St. in town) to her death. Another version has her living in a dorm on 441, taking substances to make her high, thinking she could fly, and jumping out to fly only to fall many stories down onto US 441. Think about the 'macho' it must have taken to title a song "An American Girl". Could be cuz TP wrote the song on a July 4th. Totally cool, this group is and was and always will be awesome, held together by TP himself, who lived and grew up in a little house 10 minutes from me........................

Tom I just heard you singing....my God if we had got together many moons ago back then. ...I would have been in a few cat fights. " That's My Tom Cat, what are you lookin at.,.you better stay away from my guy or I will knock your ass out" !!!! LoL. I'm serious :). I am for real.... Mary Poppins. Jk. I was Mary Poppins in a play in kinder garten. And I tried to jump off my roof on Rockledge in Pleasant Grove..I lived next door to the Parigis. They had a picture of Cher...you know Sonny and Cher Bono...and Chaz is doing great! They had a garage band next door..I met JoJo. The Taylors Jack Taylor would sneak in and play with his daughter Michelle...bit Wayne played me It's a beautiful day and I would listen to the whole album while he used me as a prop...said he had sex with me butt didn't. He had pretty blue eyes and dark skin. He looked like a native Indian. Lori Rnright and I were best friends in school. JoJo must have been younger than me or attended another school I dunno. But I would crae l in Frank rules lap and say. No I'm not tired I just need to rest my eyes in his rocking chair . They drank bud beer. Monica and Kathy and John Lamb knew Mark caccuzo they worked together at a glass cutting company. Butt Marilyn rule. Franks wife taught me how to twist. I'm not Dana York. And I have s scar on my hand where I got hit at 3:33 pm by a truck which bono from U 2 writes a song about. On Americana when I lived in Apts close to where I am now...Butt I learned how to twist like Marilyn and when Tom Petty with brown eyes was battling cancer...oh I made him laugh....pamala. We broke up once he said she took my rings. My babies. Pam Harty

As my buddy John said over 30 years ago as we were "digging" in his Jeep back home in Florida; "the greatest rock n roll song ever." I won't agree or disagree. Top 5 for sure.

BEFORE teenybop? Just want to remind you guys of Tommy Roe, The 1910 Fruitgum Company, The Archies, and the Ohio Express. And don't forget the Monkees. That covers both bubblegum and teenybop. The best teenybop band IMHO was The Bay City Rollers. They could really rock! All those bands came before Tom Petty. Teenbop music nowadays can't hold a candle to these teenybop and bubblegum classics! But, I love Tom Petty!

He touched so many people with his music, a gift to the world, we all are a little better for having had him to play the music that touches us all. He made things a little more tolerable when things aren't so good and made us happy when they were.

Sure David, but i think you missed my point. I said I can think of some, but I was really interested to get your recommendations on current acts that can be as classic songwriters/performers as people like Tom Petty?
If you share your suggestions, I'll share some of mine.

Lism no comment. Nuff said OK find someone else to talk to I have his bloddy phone number I know and streamline with all kinds of musicians. You don't want a come to Jesus meeting. You are getting on Tim and my nerves. I was told rumors about him. He lives very close to me now. He always said he would come back for me get a life and her onver it

I have watched his videos everday since 10/02/2017. He is very high in this one. Just because I have seen them all and many over and over. I see the pattern of the times he was and wasn't. I seriously love this band and am definately obsessed. It is good but he has sang it better. He's sweating from being high just another sign.
