      "One of the best" I agree, but under rated ? I think that people who know his work respect him greatly. Why else would Fleetwood Mac choose him to replace Lindsey Buckingham ? Perhaps "under recognized" would be a more appropriate term.

    • @evelynbaron2004
      @evelynbaron2004 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and no -- his taking on the music industry is the stuff of legend and given his abusive father but abiding love for bro and mother I can see that he wanted a stable family in his band and at home -- problem seemed to be that he got railroaded into an early marriage with someone too fragile to handle that new life and things fell apart and this song is painful although brilliant because every once in a while biographical circs found their way into his music and I think that's why this song hurts to listen to.

    • @viviave8
      @viviave8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think a lot of relationships end because one or both people stop believing in it. He's making a brave choice to carry on despite the darkness and hard times, he wants to believe that things will get better. It is sad but it's so damn beautiful.

  • @brycelambley1122
    @brycelambley1122 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    "That's quite a good song," Petty says. "I wrote it quite late at night I think. I thought it was a nice optimistic verse in the end: 'I don't believe the good times are over.' I was probably feeling a little melancholy around that time. That song was one of the few things I was excited about on the album. Also not released as a single, Bruce Springsteen took me aside and told me what a great song that was. That made me feel better; somebody noticed it."
    "When we toured this record in Europe," Benmont says, "in the middle of 'Straight Into Darkness' for about four or five gigs in a row, fights broke out. It didn't matter if we were playing a regular gig or an army base or what, fights would break out in the middle of that song. I really love that song. I like it when Tom writes the darker stuff."'
    -from the liner notes of Playback (boxed set)

    • @jimwilliams3816
      @jimwilliams3816 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I recall how the album (which I still play) got lukewarm reviews when it came out. I guess the critics didn't think it broke new ground. Tom did an interview where he said something apologetic like "well, you've just got to keep turning stuff out, you know?" Fast forward forty years, and a lot of their most enduring standards were on this album, and not just because the videos got heavy rotation on MTV back then. Just sayin'.

    This is during the Pack Up The Plantation tour. They added a horn section (The Soul Lips) and three female back-up singers. While it added an interesting dimension to some songs, I prefer my TP&THB unadulterated. However, Kudos to Scott Thurston for his promotion to Official Heartbreaker.

    • @evelynbaron2004

      quite right but if I haven't fallen down some rabbit hole the album was no. 4 after Damn the Torpedoes and there was a Straight into Darkness feel about the whole project; I dare say we the audience value it justifiably but despite Tom's protestations to the contrary, that he didn't write confessionally, which needs to be said, there are obvious links between what was going on in his own life and his own life wasn't a pink cloud or a summer breeze -- pick a metaphor. I honestly don't want to be intrusive but there does exist biographical evidence that he approved. that Things didn't go well at times.

      The only person who underrated Tom was Tom. That’s why he devoted his life to music and his fans. Mike Campbell said in an interview a week after his death that at their final show at the Hollywood Bowl Tom was at the top of the mountain. He finally felt content. Sadly we lost him a week later.

      @@hannaj4032 I would respectfully agree and disagree ... Dylan got the nobel prize, Clapton is spoken of in hushed reverent tones, Neil Young still poster child for the angry and disaffected. In a 2014 interview for Q CBC Ghomeshi said you don't always get mentioned with your iconic .contemporaries, does that bother you and Tom's answer was no, I don't have time to be bothered I'm just glad I'm still in the conversation.
      But yes you are right, his own harshest critic; read Conversations with Tom Petty, musicologist Paul Zollo, and Tom's 2nd wife Dana would sit him down and make him listen to albums he couldn't bear until he saw what she meant. Great comment on a complicated subject. What I think, presumptuous that may be is that as a man and an artist, although I think he fell on his sword for his audience and died too soon in point of fact he had found peace and forgiveness and redemption -- more than most of us manage in 90 yrs let alone 66. Tx again for great comment.

      @@hapax87 I agree with his sterling worth as a songwriter/musician and the singular thing that happened throughout his career was that people he revered in the world of music just showed up; which speaks to recognisation by his peers. But until he died he wasn't always acknowledged with the reverence meted out to people like Clapton, Dylan, etc.

    "Straight into Darkness" from "Long After Dark" (1982) was the first TP & the HB's LP to feature Howie Epstein on bass and vocals.

      Long After Dark doesn't get it's proper due. It might be my favorite Heartbreakers album because it's...maybe?...they're most guitar heavy record. If it's not the most, it's certainly close. One Story Town another great song that isn't mentioned enough. Same Old You, one of their best riffs. Neither even made it on the Playback compilation set and you won't hear any of these songs on Classic Radio.

    I adore TPHB but they needed those horns & background singers like they needed a hole in their heads. Howie, Stan & Benmont MORE than adequate. Love this song & all of Long After Dark!

      Tom came to the same conclusion. I appreciate him expanding his palette, but, as you noted, he already had one of the greatest bands on the planet. We never heard another horn after this tour.

      You know, John Fogerty among others tried the "big band" approach back in the '80s, but they pretty much discontinued that practice quickly. I think they realized that simpler can be better.

    Phenomenal! Thanks for posting this! Happened across it by recommendation from another version of this song. Wonderful sounds and rhythm. Unmatched in my opinion. Wish there were more images of Howie and others in this but surely can hear him on bass and vocals. Nice touch with the saxophone too; but can’t decide who it was on it. My guess would likely be wrong.

      You got to check out his early stuff, before 85. In 85 he went on a run that is truly epic. Starting w/Southern Accents, Let Me Up, I've had Enough. Then Full Moon Fever, Travelling Wilberys vol. 1 Into the Great Wide Open & Wildflowers. He never really stopped. It's like no other artist I can recall anywhere. 16 was as good a year to see him as1985 was. May Your memory live Forever Tom Petty!!!
