How to Make a Desk Table Top from Hardwood Flooring

  • In this video we’re making a large custom table top to use as a crafting desk. I have an eight foot wide loft area upstairs and I wanted to put a desk there for crafting, but finding a desk that large was difficult! I had already made a similar desk for Brady (Mrs. Billd) and we really liked it so I decided to make another to fit the loft area. Made from plywood and oak hardwood flooring, this design can be modified to make table tops of a variety of sizes and is a fairly simple build that beginner woodworkers can tackle!

    Awesome video!!! Thanks so much for making this video. I’ve watched others and this is by far the best! I love your idea about using the ratchets to “clamp” areas too large to be clamped with available clamps!!!! I can’t wait to get started!!

    Even though it takes a while, the orbital sanders actually tend to be easier to get an even sanding since the belt sanders are very unforgiving and are prone to digging in on the edge of the sander.

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep I've read that since. I did find a more aggressive orbital sander that I'll get and try out should I do a similar project in the future

    Thanks for the video! Planning to build a desk top just like you did using leftover pre-finished wood flooring, but still trying to figure out how to do the edge treatment being there will be raw wood once I cut off the tongue portion. Might be best to try and get a stain close to whats on there now and follow up with a clear?

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah either try to match the stain as best you can or go with a contrasting stain to add a different color border

    • @rebeccaknox2567
      @rebeccaknox2567 ปีที่แล้ว

      On prefinished you could maybe rip the edge on a 45 and attach another 45 ripped piece giving you a square finished edge. That or go with a contrasting enamel painted bit for the edging.

    I built a hardwood tabletop in a basket weave kind of pattern out of Tiger wood and bamboo hardwood flooring. I sealed the top with poly as it was going outside and the poly turned cloudy. The table is now ten years old and has held up well except for the cloudiness. I have cleaned it off and put a coat of Tung Oil. Would you recommend anything else?

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'll start by saying I'm not an expert when it comes to finishes. You could try seeing if teak oil could somewhat restore the finish, but you may end up needing to sand down to the bare wood and refinish it to get a good result

    How long start to finish did building it take? Not including staining and poly steps.

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not including those steps I would guess around 2 to 3 days. A bit of that depends on how much sanding you want to do and how big of a desk top you end up making

      @@ProjectBilld the only bad thing about ikea in my area is I just placed 4 of the drawers in my cart and shipping was $360. Ikea really needs more locations.

      Yikes! I don't have one close to me either. When I got those I had them delivered for around $50 to a friend's house who lives sort of close to one and picked them up when I was over their way

    Would your desktop have bowed in the middle without the middle cabinet?

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope. It's actually bowed a little bit in the other direction since I didn't finish the bottom of it and isn't even touching the middle cabinet. It's veryyy sturdy

  • @bharath700i

    Different approach than I have seen so far. It will be very useful if you can share the cost breakdown for this project?

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Costs will vary a lot based on current lumber prices and what supplies you already have but here's an estimate as of today:
      16 sq ft unfinished red oak flooring at $4 a sq ft = $64
      Sheet of 4x8 3/4 inch plywood = $70
      1x6x8 red oak board = $30
      Various other materials = $20-$50
      I had most materials and tools already on hand leftover from other projects so the cost was lower for me. Hope this helps!

    In my experience, like also using laminates, when you glue something to just one face of ply, without a balancer on the other side, it tends to cup over time. Had you had and issues so far?

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      None so far. Both desks I've made like this look the same as they did when I made them

    • @ProjectBilld

      Obviously this depends on where you are but around me lowes/home depot as well as flooring distributors carry it. Now if it's in stock or not is another question entirely
