I love this technique. It really is the only way to kiss that 80's orange wood tone goodbye and allow that beautiful woodgrain to speak for itself!! Great job!!
Oh… so that’s why I have sanding swirls in all my projects… yeah, I definitely press hard as to “help” the sanding go faster…. Now I know, it’s not the sander, it’s me! Thank you for the sanding tips!!
The color is great. What a difference it makes. This piece went from something I probably wouldn’t give a second glance to something that I’d use in my home. Great job.
Great job. Everything done properly. As an old schooler, the oil base finishes were the best. I have always been skeptical of water based finishes because they can open the grain. Also, water based finishes can be brittle especially on wood flooring. Eliminating oil base products was the dumbest things ever done over very, very sketchy climate change claims. Stupid, stupid stupid. It matters who you vote for.
I appreciate you didn’t fast forward the process like other diyers it’s great to see the whole thing happen in 30 seconds but for those of us who have never done anything like this it’s really great to be able to learn and all your tips were great advice. I want to be able to do these things myself but I don’t know even know the names of the tools so I appreciate the slower pace and you going over every bit and every tool! I’ll be flipping my nightstands and replaying this video as I do! This Torontonian thanks you!!
Wow. That table would have gone in the skip or to the second hand shop definitely. But you turned it round so much so it looks like tables that I have seen worth hundreds of pounds. Amazing If I had seen the end product first I never would have believed it was that orange looking table
Thank you. This helps me with our old doors that need a new look. The look of the 80s doesn't match well with a 400 y.o. house. I'll use pigmented linseed oil, which makes any wood pop with its structure and natural sheen.
I was a little sceptical about the green wash but putting the brown stain over it was genius! It’s beautiful and so much better than that orange finish.
Gorgeous! It's almost exactly like our coffee and end tables which are also orange and in bad need of refinishing. You've inspired me to give it a go and I appreciate seeing the paint colours and techniques you used to achieve the cooler, elevated finish in the end. It looks very polished and fresh.
This small table did look old dated but now it is modern again and it is looking fantastic !!!! So with even simple handling you van turn it to a nice piece instead of throwing it away !! Love this video !!
I know NOTHING about what you do, but a lot about medicine. Now, thanks to watching you, I think the table I got from my brother in the 70's is solid maple. It has 2 leaves that drop down the sides, or if up, are held up by a pull out piece of wood. I have carted that table around the world during my military career. Now, it needs some love. Thanks to you, I have some ideas of how to make it lovely again. Thanks!
I like watching your u tubes. You explain exactly what you are doing, and why. Very hands on and educational. You are certainly not boring and do different things all The time…. And mostly you keep everything simple.
I use brown craft paper, Meijer brown bags from the pharmacy, and brown packing paper that comes in my shipments from Sam's Club or Amazon as my final sanding. Works extremely well and mostly free because I already have all of that and lunch bags work if you have nothing else.
Great video, THANK YOU!!! I am refinishing a dining room table and going to use this technique! I wouldn't have thought you could stain over a paintwash!!!
Katie your videos are so refreshing compared to some of the other furniture flippers I’ve been following. Their videos are becoming so commercialized but you’re keeping it real ❤
Amazing transformation. I think a lot of people own/were handed down at least a few pieces afflicted with the "orange wood" syndrome that are structurally sound, but look horribly dated. You see it with kitchen cabinets too and it really dates the entire kitchen. The combo paintwash and stainwash techniques were the perfect update and made the table look brand new. Well done!
Viewer from England here, I loved that transformation I hate that yellowy orange wood, we have a lot of that over here. I have found a beautiful old cupboard with ornate carved drawer fronts in my mothers garage and I am itching to trandform it. I am learning lots watching your videos, thank you. Best wishes Christine x
I had issues with stain on top of dresser until I found the thing for painting wall with pad. It is so much easier and faster now to put stain on big dresser . Love the final color on this one❤
I usually water pop and lightly sand the wood before staining. However, I loved your tip about two thin coats of poly before lightly scuff sanding and will soon be trying that! As usual, a good video and great work on this piece.
Very inspiring! I have that 80’s orangy looking stain on my parent’s oak bedroom furniture - made by my carpenter dad for my mom! They have passed and my husband and I decided to keep it. Just ripped out carpet and put in wood laminate. Now to decide on whether to paint or strip the stain & poly! You’ve given me for for thought. It’s just that there are 4 pieces and it would be a lot of sanding🤔
This is so great! I'm in the process up stripping an old dresser that was so very orange. It's solid maple and I wanted to keep it. The paint wash worked well--I've never tried that. I have refurbished many wood pieces and really enjoy the outcome. I'm going to use some of your tips. Thank you for sharing your ideas with us.
You do such beautiful work. Thanks for sharing your journey of recycling old furniture . My husband and I have always love to up cycle old furniture for our home or our children’s home. It’s so good for the environment. Thank you
I love it. It looks so much better. What a great makeover. I love the way the color turned out. I will have to find a similar color to that driftwood to use as a paint wash. I use Dixie Belle paints. I do the same when I sand. I start with 80 grit (when needed), then 120 and finish with 180. Before I do the 180 I always wipe the piece down with a wet rag to “pop” the grain. I find this really helps when applying my stain and top coat.
This is stunning! I’m in the middle of refurbishing a dining table and this is exactly what I want to do! Thank you so much for sharing your process! ❤
Perfect timing for you to post this!! I have a small kitchen table in exactly the same orange tone, and was all out of ideas as to what type of finish to paint it. Thank you!!
I’m in process for refinishing some very old maple pieces for my own home, and after removing the orange shellac, I paint washed with Annie Sloan “Country Grey.” For a final coat I used three applications of linseed oil and then waxed with wax and white wax. The trunk is finished, and I’m still working on the secretary desk, but I’m very pleased with the beautiful pale finish on the maple.
Very helpful video and easy to follow. My husband and I are going to try this on our well-used dining table. We had a dark stain on it to cover the orange, but it was too dark. We have it stripped down now, so we're going to try this. Thanks so much 😊
Beautiful. I appreciate your comments throughout about your thought process as to why you are doing what you are doing. So very helpful. Excellent video as always.
Lovely piece. As I watched I was thinking how 'modern' has always adapted depending upon when a piece is either constructed or refinished. That coffee table was modern at the time it was made, right down to the color of the finish. It is interesting that today's modern has a different definition just as tomorrow's modern will have its own different definition.
Way better! The color change made a world of difference.
How on earth can you stain in a white sweatshirt and not get a drop on you? Truly amazing
😅
I love this technique. It really is the only way to kiss that 80's orange wood tone goodbye and allow that beautiful woodgrain to speak for itself!! Great job!!
woodprix is a good solution for every woodworker.
Oh… so that’s why I have sanding swirls in all my projects… yeah, I definitely press hard as to “help” the sanding go faster…. Now I know, it’s not the sander, it’s me! Thank you for the sanding tips!!
Me too, first time was full of swirly marks. Now i know why.
This was the best video for the watcher! You explained what you were doing and why you were doing that. Fully interesting and informative!
Really nice job, simple without overdoing it like so many people do when refurbing furniture
I appreciate you didn’t fast forward the process like other diyers it’s great to see the whole thing happen in 30 seconds but for those of us who have never done anything like this it’s really great to be able to learn and all your tips were great advice. Yes thank you for not fast forwarding!!! Great video❤
All of Katie’s videos are like master classes on how to restore furniture finishes.
Wow. That table would have gone in the skip or to the second hand shop definitely. But you turned it round so much so it looks like tables that I have seen worth hundreds of pounds. Amazing
If I had seen the end product first I never would have believed it was that orange looking table
Great job, Katie. Just a wee facelift for an almost 30 years old.
🌺" Katie Scott". Cosmedic Surgeon for the wood world.🌺
You make it look so easy. Hours and hours of sanding!!
You are an incredible inspiration.
Thank you very much!
How many hours did it take you to sand the top of the table? What grit did you use?
You did a great job on bringing that classic beauty back to live in this century!
What a difference! Average thrift find to contemporary and elegant. It's beautiful.
I always appreciate your narrative---taking us through the steps and why's. :) It looks so upscale and modern now.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You make it look so easy! KNOW it's not. 😁 Beautiful result. Thank you for sharing.
Much better and sturdy enough that in 10 years when the yellowy orange stain comes back in style someone can refinish it!😂😂
I hope not! I have an oak bedroom set that I need to refinish and it's going to take me ages to sand every crevice in there
Love the paint effect. Subtle, but what a difference it made. Well done.
Wow, Katie!!! That looks awesome!! Such a beautiful table now!
Thank you. This helps me with our old doors that need a new look. The look of the 80s doesn't match well with a 400 y.o. house.
I'll use pigmented linseed oil, which makes any wood pop with its structure and natural sheen.
Oh wow!!! Katie you did a beautiful job on that coffee table, you saved it from being ugly to beautiful 🏆
Katie I love that you even painted underside to eliminate that orange glow. Turned out to be one of my favorites so far. ❤
As always great job. It looks so different n perfect. I like the stain you used, nice color.
♥️♥️😊👍👍🌟
I was a little sceptical about the green wash but putting the brown stain over it was genius! It’s beautiful and so much better than that orange finish.
Definitely an updated look. Such a soft neutral color. Who wouldn't want a solid wood coffee table in that color?
So simple but so much better. It really would be perfect with any home decor.
I know NOTHING about what you do, but a lot about medicine. Now, thanks to watching you, I think the table I got from my brother in the 70's is solid maple. It looks lovely. It’s amazing how the change in stain color completely updates the table.🌸
I like watching your u tubes. You explain exactly what you are doing, and why. Very hands on and educational. You are certainly not boring and do different things all
The time…. And mostly you keep everything simple.
That’s gorgeous. Love the lighter earthy tones.
I love simple flips that just turn out absolutely beautiful. ❤
I appreciate your instructions. It’s so helpful to understand the process. You would be a good teacher. Beautiful finished table.
Wow, I thought the yellow orange color wasn't so bad until I saw the new finished color - WAY more class. A new elegant look for sure!
Wow, now that is an improvement! Thanks for sharing! 💯
Beautifully done! New color is perfect!😊
I use brown craft paper, Meijer brown bags from the pharmacy, and brown packing paper that comes in my shipments from Sam's Club or Amazon as my final sanding. Works extremely well and mostly free because I already have all of that and lunch bags work if you have nothing else.
I love how you bring out the original beauty of each piece!
So much nicer! Love the new stain color. 🩷👌🏻
Simple, yet lovely. Nice job Katie ❤
This turned out great! I just purchased a dining table from my local Salvation Army and can't wait to give it a makeover!!!
Nice work! Love how you take your time and sand carefully!
Loving everything about this! Well done! 👏🏼
This is a beautiful redo! This is such a good and simple design, you improved it so much.
Win! Win! You did it again! ❤❤❤
I love this Katie! It really looks fresh and classic now. Good choice and great job once again. *applause*😀
It looks amazing, so much better 👍
Lovely! I'm a little sick of a grey toned paint wash but with the stain over top the color was fabulous! What a great piece!
Wow, stunning flip! You inspired me to do something similar to my yellowed pine pie pantry and I'm so happy with the results. 😊😊
Beautifully brought back from the brink.
Beautiful, classy and serene!
A classic beauty that's elegant and timeless. Your skills are impeccable Katie. BRAVO!
Very nicely done
Im going to attempt this, my first project on an old coffee table passed around my family from one kid to the next. Very excited.
Really great job! Definitely updates it while respecting the wood. 👍🏻
Great job and interesting voice-over explanations of all you did and why. Thank you for this video.
Great job Katie! Beautiful!!
Omg you work your **s off on these makeovers! Kudos !!
Such a good useful little table … and I’m sure it thanks you for its second chance at life!!! Very nice 😅
Beautiful! Such a change!
Katie, love the color and the wood grain is stunning!

Strange coincidence, just booking a holiday to Canada this morning. C
I’m in LOVE with that stain color combo!! Just beautiful!!
Loved this table ❤
I had issues with stain on top of dresser until I found the thing for painting wall with pad. It is so much easier and faster now to put stain on big dresser . Love the final color on this one❤

Very refined and lovely finish. You are an excellent teacher.

Another beauty!!! Thanks for the ideas Katie.
I'm going to try this method. I have a mahogany chest that is soooo red orange. Thank you, your directions are straight forward.
Fabulous job, Katie! And I also love listening to podcasts while refinishing furniture! 😊
I love it. It looks so much better. What a great makeover. I love the way the color turned out. I will have to find a similar color to that driftwood to use as a paint wash. I use Dixie Belle paints.

Absolutely beautiful! Love the color!

Perfect timing for you to post this!! I have a small kitchen table in exactly the same orange tone, and was all out of ideas as to what type of finish to paint it. Thank you!!
Absolutely LOVE this. I am going to restore an old family bureau following your steps! Thank you!

And it has stood up nicely to my cat’s traffic…the trunk is is his path between furniture!
Just beautiful! Great job! You have a gift for this!
Looks lovely, I want a sander! LOL.
Always trying to neutralise orange. Keep it "warm" & show the wood! Beautiful reveal, thanks!
Very helpful video and easy to follow. My husband and I are going to try this on our well-used dining table. We had a dark stain on it to cover the orange, but it was too dark. We have it stripped down now, so we're going to try this. Thanks so much 😊
What a beautiful transformation Katie, the light wood is a massive improvement! 😍👏🤩
Beautiful. I appreciate your comments throughout about your thought process as to why you are doing what you are doing. So very helpful. Excellent video as always.
What a difference! Fabulous now👏👏
Lovely piece. As I watched I was thinking how 'modern' has always adapted depending upon when a piece is either constructed or refinished. That coffee table was modern at the time it was made, right down to the color of the finish. It is interesting that today's modern has a different definition just as tomorrow's modern will have its own different definition.
Love it! My bed frame is that orangy tone. Strongly considering giving it this makeover and just following what you did here! Thank you!!
Hi Katie,
Ohhhh yeah this looks awesome!
As always job well done!
Stay safe, warm and God Bless ❤
Waw, the table looks amazing now. I would not have guessed it's the same one. 😅
Your vision and skills are a joy to behold!
Amazing…. Didn’t realize I was watching another NB girl!
It looks fantastic!
Now it's really elegant. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I personally would never have taken that table apart, but you are the professional and I'm not. It looked great!
