This is one of the best, most informative videos you’ve done for the newbies and the misinformed. I’m sure many will be saving this one to refer back to over and over again. Thank you for all the experimenting and sharing you do for the paint pouring community!
@Lorie Ritter Art I agree! As a complete newbie, some of this I was saying "yep, yes, got it" ... Then there the mathematical equation parts that were like "whoosh, over the head" .. and I hear myself saying "Ummm, I'll just come back to this part later!" 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks LBA. I usually try to avoid thinking on Saturday until after lunch, but you always have a reason to break that habit. Good job, but I try. To avoid Math until Monday morning.
I love all the fluid art TH-camrs, but you really break down the whole art for us. As a real newbie, this is helpful. Sometimes no actual painting, but the basic information, is really needed and appreciated. Also appreciate those who do testing of products comparison so we see right there what is happening. Sometime we can take the exact mixing and actions while following along with a video, but ours is nothing like the one we are following along with..and we don't know why.We did exactly as they were doing..even the same brand paints..but not at all what we see them coming up with. It frustrates when you do exactly what they are doing, with them, and yours is disappointing while theirs is WOW.
I feel that in the depth of my soul Judi. Happens to all of us unfortunately. Little subtle things like temperature, humidity, airflow, paint age, paint surface, etc can all lead to ours being different than theirs.
OMG! Thank goodness someone is doing it! Ever since we heard the terms cell activator, pillow etc I have seen so many newbies becoming sooo confused and I can't blame them! Thank you 💕🤗
You are so welcome! I hope that is the response I can get people to take. So much better to start from a place where we are on the same page at least for terminology.
I am such a newbie 🤣 and indeed “cell activator “ ingredients are paint and ??? (Glue? Water?) or just thick paint? So many questions…. Anyone that has the answer for me? I kindly thank you 😁❤️
I appreciate your time explaining everything. This is getting so overwhelming. It's not an easy art. Using a leveler and scale to paints and a cocktail of additives and chemicals. I can't find a class. Thank you for taking the time to educate someone like me in left field. Should have paid attention in math class too. Lol
I know the feeling. Hopefully I have something more to help the math. If you haven't seen it already go to leftbrainedartist.com/calculator to figure out how much mixed paint you need for a specific canvas size.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I have been binge watching your videos. I NEED to understand the mechanics behind what I am doing. After 70 yrs that's not going to change! I love your videos. I've wanted to try acrylic pour for a couple of years and your tutorials are the trick! You are my mentor for this media...just like Me Tie Dye taught me tie dyeing. He explains everything like you do. My grand-daughter is excited that I am getting into yet another lane of creative art, and wants to do it, too!
Great work LBA, again! This video should be compulsory to watch when being accepted into a pouring group on facebook. There is so much confusion over the different terms
Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge for free. I have just started out, and my mind was frazzled with the different ratios paint to medium/water etc. Explaining how the weight of paint is so important is fascinating. If I could hug you right now I would! 😁
Hopefully one day in the near future, if my art journey goes as planned, I’ll be in a position to give you a monetary tip for all of your tips. You certainly deserve it, I’ve learned so much from you in such a short time. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I appreciate your left brain OCD (ish) breakdown of pour terms. I know when I first started pouring, I was just as confused as a bee hitting a window trying to get out and not understanding how it was possible that I couldn’t. I could see what I wanted. I could see how to get there, but just couldn’t. Pouring paint in the beginning was more like throwing paint in frustration. Mix, pour repeat. Repeat. Throw. Mix, pour, repeat, repeat…repeat!!!! I wanted to throw out the mixing sticks, paint and everything else. I found a couple artists that I watched more because of the way they mixed and what they used. As much as I loved others, their styles/outcomes and wanted nothing more than to make something similar, I knew I was only going to go back to paint temper tantrum’s. Olga and Kanella. They became my go to because of they way they mixed their paints for the beautiful outcomes they create. I got comfortable with my own paints and wanted to take another step towards what I was wanting to do and added the couple more I fell in love with. In the end, I’ve found my groove and realized that my style was a combination of all my favorites. We all jump into what we love. But we also had to crowl and hold onto stuff before we could walk. Start out easy and less complex until what you are making is what you are loving. I do wish this video was done years ago when I was throwing painting tantrums. So my advice is pick an artist or two. Get comfortable with their techniques and terms. Remember that unless you are using the same materials, your own painting is not going to be the same. Every paint, pillow, medium and style is different and won’t have the same results using different materials. Apple Barrel matte paint won’t look or act like Liquitex. Even their level 1 acrylics. Don’t even try lol. That’s the square peg and round hole. And that’s where I was at when I first started. Don’t be me! 😂🤣
So true. I always tell people to start with one mix and one technique. Semi-master that. Then add a change and move slowly from there. Your results will be much more successful and the frustration way less.
Great video my friend. So many newbies are overwhelmed with all these terms. Thank you especially for pointing out that Floetrol is not a traditional pouring medium! ❤️❤️
You explain things so well and have help clear up quite a few problems that I had trying to do the acrylic pour that I now know what I did wrong. Thank you very much. I’ll keep listening and watching. Pat
Thanx once again and as always, your teaching style not only answers the questions we have but you anticipate them and their variants so most of the time we can go out and get started using the ideas because you have anticipated what we might run into and answered that as well. Whew, I am known for long sentences!
I wished I had known that long ago, it’s been a search and mess before I found what worked for me. Now I still had a problem with pillow and cell activator, thanks to you that’s elucidated too. Thanks so much again for all your searches and sharing it with us 😊🌺
Thank you thank you thank you dear Left Brained Artist for making this video so simple and helpful, you are so kind in sharing this important information on this complicated technique. I've spent literally £000s wasting money! Wish I'd seen this when I first started doing fluid painting. And also a HUGE THANK YOU for mentioning things we CAN get in the UK, like Owatrol (a similar brand as Flood Floetrol) which is what we have in the UK (you can buy Flood Floetrol but it's around £80 per gallon!). I cannot personally get on with PVA glue, it definitely cracks the paint (even with the addition of GAC 800). It's so refreshing and I'm now subscribed as I love your videos, they are immensely helpful. Thank you again! Heather UK
I will be referring back to this video again. Have not made a canvas yet, still watching all vids. This was informative and I 🙏 thank you so much. You are generous
@@LeftBrainedArtist trying not to leap. Going to start with a balloon painting and then the hair dryer blow. Can be pricey. You show us so many styles to choose from. TY SO much✨🙏
Thank you dear one, it is confusing listening to all that junk. I wasted money on coconut oil syrum, then I found you! You're brilliant! Oil and water do not mix! Makes a mess on canvases. Love your informative videos. Thank you. 🙋💜✝️🇺🇲
THANK YOU!!! Finally someone who can actually explain and answer all my questions about terminology. Great job and I can't thank you enough! Especially on how to figure how much paint to use! Brilliant!
Okay, so it wasn't dazzling or 'take your breath away' pretty, but, it was really informative. Look newbies (me included) if you're going to take this art seriously and really commit and have fun with it then you'd do well to tune in to LBA once in a while. He'll clear the road ahead for you so you won't have to run over all the bumps and rocks in the road. If you want to become a doctor then you have to go to school. If you want to be an artist...there's some things you need to know. I've watched 3 or 4 of his videos and I've learned a lot. I mean A LOT and it's going to come in very handy as I become more involved with acrylic pouring. Thanks for all the tips and information. Now, on to your next video.
Your videos are marvelous! Like this one, that finally explains the terms that everybody else uses, but doesn't specifically explain. Kudos to you. For two years I've been doing this, and I still learn tons from watching your videos. It seems that there is often a tendency to mystilfy the process in order to create additional interest. I can understand that, though it becomes very frustrating and does not need to be that way.
EXCELLENT VIDEO! The best instructional video ever! I’m a beginner n I’ve been trying to find this information n you pulled it all together in one video!! Spectacular 😊
Excellent. When I first start my problem was terminology. Paint, pigment, fluid, satin ,gloss, base1, deep base. Thanks for your explanations and effort.
An amazing tutorial with a wealth of information, which as a beginner is beyond helpful! Thank you so much for taking the time to post this, incredibly useful! Actually, to the best of my knowledge, you are the only site that has given the most important tutorial ~ pouring 101. Thank you!! 👍🙏👍
You are truly the best! The time you take to make these videos for us is amazing, I love Them all, but this is my favorite. I usually listened to Black Sabbath when I'm cleaning, but for awhile I plan on putting this on also til it's instilled in my head! You are "Awesome! "
I absolutely love your videos!! I'm learning and you explain so thoroughly down on the "newbie" level. Please keep them coming. I look forward to them. Thank you! 😊❤
Excellent video! Minor tweak-the viscosity of paint doesn’t have anything to do with quality or cost. Golden paints and other professional series are priced by pigment and how hard/easy it is to manufacture and/or use natural or synthetic resources. Golden heavy body is priced in the same manner as their fluid acrylic line with no loss of pigmentation. I agree the SheleeArt technique muddied the waters in terms of naming conventions (pillow/base/flow extender etc). The cell activator though was named because of the chemical reaction caused by taking one color and mixing it with an alternate product different from the rest of the colors-usually Australian Floetrol. If you compare Aussie Floetrol to American Floetrol with all things being equal, and the results will be drastically different. Shelee didn’t realize that the Flood company made different versions of Floetrol for different countries, so many of us tried substitutes or played with the American Floetrol viscosity to mimic the Australian version. It’s the first time I saw where cell consistency and paint densities didn’t matter-mind blown! Anyway, fabulous fabulous video for beginners! Next up-getting everyone on the same page with the types of pours! LOL talk about muddy waters! Dutch pour/air swipe/blowout-which is it??!!! Cheers!
Wow! This is the best video you have done explaining every thing so clearly. Thank you so much for your dedication to us with clear instructions in how to create cells. You are the best!
Great job! As you know, I have been struggling trying to paint anything. You’ve given me explanations and examples so kindly to All my questions. Now that you made this amazing, informative video, I can refer back to it over and over ! Thanks so much for you kindness and hard work. What follows are the Questions I wish I had answers to 1.5 years ago: how do I prep my canvas? How do I know what my ratios pm:H2O: paint should be? Is there a specific order to the mixing? How do I know how much paint I require? What happens to my composition if there is too much paint on the canvas? Too little paint? Can I repaint over a used canvas? Can I repour paint onto a wet canvas ? How do I save a painting that has some good qualities and also some poor composition? How do I get organized?? (That’s still an issue) What do I need on hand when I decide to create? What do I do with leftover paint ? How long does mixed paint last? Do I need distilled water? Maybe a whole ‘nother video ? Thanks so much, Shelley
I'm just starting into fluid art. By that I mean I'm watching a ton of videos. But I just now found your video that explains everything about pour terminology. It's fantastic! Thank you so much.
This was great. I knew a lot of it from watching you and Fiona. However, I like the way you explain the more technical stuff like density and ratio. Thank you David.☮️💖🎶
Wow! What a really useful video. I especially needed to hear an explanation of Cell Activator as I've seen people use it but with no explanation as to what it actually is. Also the difference between Pillow, Base and Flow extender was super useful. Thanks so much David.
Glad it was helpful! I get a lot of questions that don't make sense about those terms so I figured I'd help me and the askers out by setting a level playing field.
Thank you for this excelent video. It’s being so much hepful for me. I will be happy if you make a tutorial about the difference between transparent end interference colors. God bless you.🙏🌺
Have watched many videos regarding paint pouring, and have absolutely learned so much more from the LBA than all others combined. This one video answered sooo many questions, especially found the math section interesting. Still a little confused when I see 2:1 or 1:2 and wonder which part refers to what component, still learning. Maybe I missed that part, lots to absorb. These are the absolute best youtube videos for beginners on the subject. Thank you for sharing your expertise on the subject.
I am having problems with my husband saying I am spending so much on different things so achieve different things and now I need alstrailan floetrol to swipe.. Something I have finally mastered but don't get the same results because I don't have the A/F.. Molly art does a tiny swipe and stretch out so big ‼️So why is it we have nothing like that in the USA?..Thank you again for another great vedio..You are gaining quite a following and helping so many people..
@@LeftBrainedArtist Yes I have..I went to the hardware store and home Depot they don't carry Penetrol ,Where can I get it??The guy at H/D never heard of it..I said but you Carry Floetrol ..And he knew what it was ..As always your vedios are great David.. Very appreciated 👍
I tried using a few alcohol inks with one of my last pieces. It's cool to work with different types of paint and techniques but in this case it was like mixing Gatorade and beer. It didn't belong and didn't do much as far as cool effects. I like when the paints do a snowflake type effect. Your videos are better than going to art class.
I'm so glad I found your channel. I'm just starting to learn this craft and I will be using guitars as my canvas. Thanks for taking the time to show novices what you know to speed up our learning process. I'm subscribing now. Thanks again, Jim. 🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠🏴☠Five Black flags out of five.

You are so welcome! If you need to send me pics of your art to my contact us form (same name website) and lets see if we can get you where you want to be Mary.
Helpful to add and demonstrate many terms and techniques. I need to know what type of “gas mask” with acrylic paint. Breathing acrylic paint through the nose or mouth is dangerous. We rarely get advice. Help!
I have honestly never used a mast with acrylic paint. All of the ones I use are non toxic and have little to no smell. If you are sensitive an N95 mask would be recommendation to start with. For resin I use an industrial respirator I use when I used to spray paint houses.
Thank you! This is definitely one of the most helpful videos on terminology for someone like myself just getting started. I follow all the others you have mentioned within this video and over time have slowly come to understand their techniques and the terminology. This very video of yours is invaluable, the icing on the cake!
Thank you so much for this information. I seem to have a mental block when it comes to numbers. I understand colors the density, mica, pigments etc. no problems. I have tried and failed for years to fix this issue. HELP!!!! By the way I failed math in school. Did great in everything else. LOL
Student and Professional acrylic paint can come in Soft, Medium, and Heavy bodies. That wasn't clean in the section on paint quality.

Cheers!
So true. That wasn't the message I wanted to convey for sure. Thanks WA. Always love hearing from my friends!
THIS IS A GREAT EDUCATION TODAY!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Any time Leslie.
Another great video David...thanks so much, lots of people don't understand all these words....wonderful...!!!
You are very welcome. I get a lot of people asking weird question that don't' make sense because they are using the nomenclature wrong.
Excellent information thank you very much. Haven’t started pouring yet. I like to get all the technical stuff in my head first.
Glad to help Lally.
Wow! This is the best video you have done explaining every thing so clearly. Thank you so much for your dedication to us with clear instructions in how to create cells. You are the best!
You're very welcome Laura. Seemed like my questions were probably other people's questions too.
Thank you for clearing things up. Always helpful videos
Happy to help Astrid. Thanks for coming back and watching.
Thanks so much,
Shelley
I have them on my list now Shelley.
You’re a generous guy. Thank you.
Love this David. Awesome info. Things we need to consider and know. Appreciate you
My pleasure! Glad to help Lori.
All this info in ONE video! Perfect. Will be saving this so I can refer to it depending on what I need at the time. Thank you!👌
So glad! Nice to have a comment set of terms to start from in a pouring conversation.
That was extremely well explained. Thank you 😊
You're very welcome Diane. Glad to help.
I'm just starting into fluid art. By that I mean I'm watching a ton of videos. But I just now found your video that explains everything about pour terminology. It's fantastic! Thank you so much.
I'm so glad Bonnie.

Wow so much valuable information. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching Carol. Glad it was helpful.
This was great. I knew a lot of it from watching you and Fiona. However, I like the way you explain the more technical stuff like density and ratio. Thank you David.☮️💖🎶
Noted! I'll try to keep that style coming as it seems to resonate with a lot of my friends like you. Thanks Marcey.
You are an awesome teacher. Thank you so much
Wow, thank you Erin.
Great overview & clear!👏👏👏
Thank you!
Thank you for this excelent video. It’s being so much hepful for me. I will be happy if you make a tutorial about the difference between transparent end interference colors. God bless you.🙏🌺
Thanks for watching Mirna. I'll make a note of that.
Thank you for another excellent tutorial.
My pleasure Helen. Thanks for watching.

Extremely helpful. Thank you for the info.
You're welcome Jane. Glad to help and thanks for watching.
Almost always the bigger number is medium and the smaller is paint Patricia.
Did you see my new videos about swiping with American Floetrol and a few drops of Penetrol (also from Flood)?
@@LeftBrainedArtist Yes I have..I went to the hardware store and home Depot they don't carry Penetrol ,Where can I get it??The guy at H/D never heard of it..I said but you Carry Floetrol ..And he knew what it was ..As always your vedios are great David.. Very appreciated 👍
@@LeftBrainedArtist can you please tell me where I would find it
@@carolynbrew3770 www.homedepot.com/p/Flood-Penetrol-1-Qt-Clear-Paint-Additive-FLD4-04/100130893 Lowes says it is out of stock.
Thank you for posting this tutorial! So informative
Always a pleasure to help Gretchen. Thanks for watching.
This is a great video for beginners!
Glad you think so! Did you have any more questions you’d like answered?
I tried using a few alcohol inks with one of my last pieces. It's cool to work with different types of paint and techniques but in this case it was like mixing Gatorade and beer. It didn't belong and didn't do much as far as cool effects. I like when the paints do a snowflake type effect. Your videos are better than going to art class.
Man, that is a huge compliment. TYVM.
That sound amazing Jim. Do you build them yourself or buy them, strip them down, and paint them?
Thank you so much for explaining all those terms. I'm just starting off, on paint pouring, and not having very good results, but I will keep trying. Thank you again for explaining everything. Very much appreciated.
Another great lesson. Thanks😃
Thanks! 😃
This is really good information! I appreciate your channel so much! I just saved it to my channel so my followers can see it! Thank you!

Thank you! This is definitely one of the most helpful videos on terminology for someone like myself just getting started. I follow all the others you have mentioned within this video and over time have slowly come to understand their techniques and the terminology. This very video of yours is invaluable, the icing on the cake!

Glad to help Ingrid.
Excellent video. Thank you.
You are welcome Rebecca.
I'm impressed you can say "craft paint" that many times and not accidentally call it "crap paint"
Oh, I used my editing skills to get rid of those mistakes. 8)
@@LeftBrainedArtist In those cases my humor skills override my editing skills and make sure they stay in.
Thank you so much for this information. I seem to have a mental block when it comes to numbers. I understand colors the density, mica, pigments etc. no problems. I have tried and failed for years to fix this issue. HELP!!!! By the way I failed math in school. Did great in everything else. LOL
I might have something up my sleeve soon for this. Stay tuned Rebecca.
@@LeftBrainedArtist Will do that!!!!!
