You're doing cells all wrong! How to get cells with silicone

- One questions I get a lot from my viewers is how to get cells with silicone. Acrylic pour cells are one of the most recognizable effects seen on Instagram, Pinterest and other social media.
One of easiest way to get cells in your acrylic pour is by using silicone. Silicone is a very lightweight substance the floats in most acrylic paints and as it rises to the surface it catches and surfaces the different color paints it comes in contact with.
The three most important part of getting cells with silicone are (1) paint consistency, (2) heat application, and (3) the amount of silicone used.
In this video I show multiple examples of acrylic pours with cells and do a demonstration of how to get cell with silicone in an acrylic pour.

Your tutorial for doing cells in pour, your tutorials are 100% better than all the others I have seen on utube. I am your fan from now on, thanks so much. I am in UK.
You are so welcome! Glad to help Joyce.
Cheers 😊
Yes finally a video that is instruction on how to get cells. It drives me crazy not getting cells I hate them I hate the paints and it's a big mess for nothing .thank you
Glad to help Deena!
Don't feel that a painting without cells is a failure or a waste of paint, think of it as a base layer for another attempt at a pour or even as a background for an acrylic painting, a landscape or a floral, or abstract, etc. I have repainted over many canvases that did not come out as I had hoped but then became good paintings because I repurposed them
When you said the heat breaks the surface tension, it finally made a lot more sense. Thank you
Glad to help!
Sooooooo helpful!!! Thanks for spelling it out simply for a beginner.
You're so welcome Vicki. Glad to help.
Omgoodness! You are my hero! I couldn't make a cell to save my life, now I make so many.. no big ones yet, but that's next... Thank you so much... Your amazing!
Glad I could help!
By far the BEST video that explains so well the process of creating silicone cells . So many videos out there pretending they offer knowledge and good explanation for creating cells but instead they only trying to attract ppl with the title. Thank you so much for making this video for us. Plsssss do more :) All the best and much success with your work! ❤
Wow, thank you! I do try to be pretty analytical about my videos and the why behind the how.
I love how you make it into a science! As a beginner, so far, you've helped me with consistency, cells, not wasting paint, understanding silicone and so much more. Can't wait to catch up on all your videos! Thank you so much!!
Great to hear Stacey. Can't wait to see what you create.
This is by far the BEST channel for explaining all the nitty-gritty of acrylic pour! So glad I found your channel!
Wow, thank you so much.
Great info. Not only how, but why. Much appreciated.
Greetings from the UK.
My pleasure Tony. Glad to help.
You are the best teacher I have ever seen on TH-cam!!! Thank-you!!
Wow, thank you very much Wilma.
I cannot express how informative this video was! Thank you so much. This has made my creativity just go nuts. Thank you thank you thank you😊
You are so welcome Jessica. I am the same way.
@@LeftBrainedArtist do you know a good silicone to use? I've tried a few.
@@JessicaDoingThingsDifferently I use spot on. it was branded as pouring oil but it is really just their treadmill silicone.
I love how descriptive your videos are. I’m so grateful to you for sharing your knowledge with us,
You are very welcome Janet.
I was going to agree with others, but decided to make this more prominent.
You do a fantastic job in explaining WHY to do things! I really appreciate that! You explain what will happen if you do x, y, or z. As an engineer, I love how you experiment and break down what you’ve learned!!! I have watched hundreds of videos over the last three months, and I have enjoyed them, but I have learned MORE from your videos than anyone else’s videos.
Your videos about how the thickness of paint affects the final outcome…how the amount of paint per layer affects the outcome…the opacity of the paint and how to layer them so the translucent paint is not muddied…the amount of paint to use by area…and this video on how to get the cells you want using silicone….I could go on and on!
I have to admit, I am still trying to learn the blowdryer technique! I have watched your video a few times, and it has really helped me understand what angles will do what to the paint!!! My issue there is STILL viscosity! But I will get there. 🙃
You are a natural born teacher, my friend! I am SO glad TH-cam directed me to your channel!!! I sincerely thank you!!!
Thank you so much for the detailed reply and the nice comment. I blame any teaching knowledge that has rubbed off on my on my mother (English teacher for 20 years).
I suck at blowdrying😢😢😢
@@simoaneholmes4917 ME TOO!!
@Smith I'm sure you're better than me🙆🏻♀️keep going though and enjoy the process while learning😬
@@simoaneholmes4917 I actually stopped doing it for a while because I am so bad. I may go take the Sheleeart class he recommended.
Figured it was time to rewatch this. I remembered the contents from when you'd first posted, but it never hurts to refresh. Thanks!
I am the same way Rebekah.
You are one of the first people that helped me begin paint pouring. I love your website on ratios of paint to canvas. Thank you and keep at it!
Thank you so much Lidia. Glad to help.
Thank you. I am just starting and have seen so many videos that were not as easy to understand.
You are so welcome Johnny. Good luck.
Best tutorials on the web! Thank you!!!!
Wow, thanks Tammie.
Very good video! Good job! Many videos really don't explain it correctly, but yours does!!
Wow, thanks!
You’re the best for explaining everything, thanks so much ♥️🙏💯
Thanks Rachelle. I appreciate the nice comment.
Paint the like button 🤣
I've been doing this for a while.. thought I had nothing to learn.. but Im stealing a few of your ideas for sure lol
Please do!
David, You amaze me. You are so full of knowledge. I wish it could be passed by osmosis! I will just keep watching you and become one of your biggest fans! You are loved!!
Thanks. Always glad to help my friend.
Thank you so much for making this video. I finally had a go at my first acrylic pour and I had patches of plain canvas and for the life of me I didn’t know why. I thought there’s no way anyone would tell me why that happened. Well who would of thought - I went to one of my favourite acrylic pour teacher and you went and told me why that happened. You are truly amazing, you even explained the difference between a heat gun and torch. Thank you again.
Aw you're making me blush Shabana. Glad to help a fellow pouring artist.
I've used industrial silicon, because it came handy. It also works fine for me. Thank you for being so precise. 🙏
Any good quality silicone should work and it is nice to get confrimation on different versions. Thanks pasilli
I am a legally blind pouring person and this is a perfect description and analysis! Sooo helpful... THANK YOU!
You are so welcome!
Thank you! I've been looking for a video like this. It saves us noobs time and money! Great job explaining everything it makes so much more sense now.
You're welcome! Glad to help out Jacob.
Than you for your tutorials I am a total novice and wanted to find a bit about the do's and don't s.Can't wait to get started now
You've got this Ann. Let me know how it goes and if you have more questions.
I like the cells on the side that the torch was used Thanks 😘
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you David for the tutorial. It was a great help as usual. 😊
My pleasure my friend.
This is the best explanation of how cells are formed - thank you. I feel like I understand the process better and can’t wait to try again!
Glad to help Shirley. Good luck!
Thanks for all the info & explanations LBA!
Any time!
Wow! Thank you. Perfect explanations:))
You're very welcome!
Thank you
Your advice, tips, options are great, keep them coming !
one clip you were talking about the consistency of the paint, what struck with me was when checking the thin or thickness, when it hits the paint in cup there’s a little mound that should level , if too thin there will be no sight of a mound. And so on 💡💡those little observations and descriptions are very helpful b
Consistecy is so important the quicker you learn those little tricks the faster you'll be getting the results you are looking for Michaela.
Hello David. Thanks for tutorial! I’ve found that by adding maybe 1/2oz of titanium white if doing say an 8oz (flip cup) pour, helps a lot w/ cell Structure. I believe it is, as you know, due to the fact that titanium White is a heavier paint. So even if you’re thinking well I wasn’t going to include white in the painting that small amount doesn’t overpower the painting but it does help with cells.
Interesting. I'll have to try that. Most of the lighter colors had white here. It was just a bit too thick and I didn't take in to account the summer heat even though I have air conditioning.
Just read this comment after leaving my comment above about not wanting to torch if I don’t have to...and I realized even though I have prepped and painted my canvas prior to pouring, I haven’t left it wet (poured titanium white)...and I think I am going to try that first next time, to see if that helps create more cells. Thanks!
@@wholewellnesswithann Hi. Well I don’t actually usually do anything to prep or paint my canvas prior to pouring. What I was referring to was if you’re doing a flip cup or a dirty pour to add in a few layers of titanium white maybe a half an ounce total. The titanium white falls down through the other colors creating cells and lacing too!
@@bigtimetorifan Oh! Great tip too - do you then just add the titanium white to the layers in the dirty pour cup? I’m excited to experiment!
@@wholewellnesswithann Yes that is what I typically do. And I’m not talking about as much paint of the other colors that you’ve chosen I’m talking about a half oz total in an 8oz pour. Maybe spilt that 1/2 oz in 2. So put 1st 2 colors in, then 1/4oz titanium, another color or two, then the other 1/4oz. And that’s it. I’d say three out of four of my flip cups yielded happy results. And so maybe if you added that along with the recommendations David is giving, you will have double success!
Omgosh I finally understand the timing on the application of the heat gun. Thank you so much!!🥳
I have a request for us newbies on a budget & paint availability issues.
Will you please do a pour using only dollar tree Prang paint for us that are still in that phase?
I would really appreciate that!
Thank you for your wonderful teaching! It’s so easy to understand when you say it. 😊
I’ll take a look Suzy. I don’t generally use craft paints because they ultimately aren’t as cost effective as student level acrylics when you do the math. I’ll have to do a video on that soon too.
@@LeftBrainedArtist I guess I didn’t know the difference. I just thought they are acrylic paint. Omgosh, now I’m even more confused!! LOL
*Also, thank you so much! I can’t wait to see it. I hope you’re surprised in a good way with that paint. :)
I love prang paint! It is great as a stretcher.
@@suzyhomeacre I am right there with you Suzy! I have watched so many videos before I attempt it because of cost.. I just found the @LeftBrainedArtist and it makes more sense to me. Good luck!!!
Isnt the Prang paint only poster paint not acrylic paint?
Excellent explanation for newbie like me 😂❤
So glad your are getting continuing value from my videos Glenda.
Thank you for explaining this so beautifully... What I understand from your explanation is that the Rayleigh-Taylor instability theory is causing the cells to form. Same as explained by you.
Yes, exactly. Thanks for watching.
Very helpful. Thanks David!
Very welcome Jan.
Love how you explain everything. Very helpful, thank you.
You are so welcome Lina. Have a good rest of the week.
Thank you for this video!! ❤
You are so welcome!
I love how you’re expanding all of this - thank you so much!
You are so welcome LAA. Glad to be of service.
Great detailed information. Thanks for this.
Thanks for watching Marlynda. Glad it was helpful.
This is so useful!
😀 I wish the end result painting came out with a bit bigger cells but I think seeing what thick paint causes is just as useful.
Looks great- thanks for the tutorial 🥰
Thanks for watching Laurie!
Thank you, really learned a lot from this video. Cheers!
Very welcome!
You are a good instructor- thank you
I appreciate that Pamela. Glad to help.
Nice colour I love it !
Thanks Ayata. Not quit what I was looking for with the cells but a great video for a demo.
Excellent!
Thanks so much Lisa.

Many thanks Pauline. It does take a village to teach for sure.
No mixing of 4th color?

My pleasure Astrid. Love your name by the way!
Super informative and just what I needed...thank you
You are so welcome Tracy. I hope it helps your future pours with cells.
I love your explanations. Very helpful
I'm so glad Terry. How are you donig with your cells?
I understand your explanations, thank you
Great! Thanks Jodie. Glad to be of service.
I love how well you explain things it helps a lot. Thank you
You're very welcome Janet. Glad to help. Don't hesitate to ask any additional questions you have.
Thanks for another informative video. Appreciate you doing these for us.
I really like the one with the caterpillar cells, beautiful colors. I look forward to the Saturday morning videos.
The base coat is a pretty color, and this turned out really awesome.
I wish the cells were a bit bigger but I didn't account for the heat here so it dried up as I was tilting more than I wanted. Every painting you learn more, even years after starting.
I can only agree with Smith: your video is excellent!! Thank you!!
TYVM!
Such an articulate discussion! Very useful
Thanks Matt. Cells are so finicky that we need as much help as we can to get them to come out right as is evident by the smallish ones I got on this painting because I didn't take in to account how hot my studio was.
Your detailed descriptions of process are so valuable. I've been pouring for a year and despite following recipes obsessively and using a gram scale, fail to produce my envisioned effects. You cover not only process but some science, and pitfalls too. Great learning tool. Perhaps using the same type of discussion on pearl cells and bloom and effects of different paint densities would be appreciated by those who still stumble( eg. me!). Kudos!
A great little chart summary. I snapped a pic for my phone, along with the measurement charts. Your art here has exactly the cell type and lacing I love...going to try your suggestion here today. So frustrating when you get it perfectly in one, then the next is a bomb. Process :)
So true. As you can tell from this video it still happens to all of us.
@@LeftBrainedArtist yes its really an art of co-creating, the paint formula does its own part that we attempt to anticipate and make the best of.
David ,thank you so much for this video.👍👍👍👍
My pleasure Janja. Let me know if you have any more questions.
THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH. SO HELPFUL!
You're welcome!
I actually love love the one with the big cells.
Thanks Gisele. Isn't art so interesting how we can all appreciate different things?

Thanks so much for all of your informative videos! You are like a science teacher in an art lab. I have gone from one of your videos to another and forget to click the like button in between. Sorry. But all 10 or so I have watched so far have been so useful. I know I’ve saved a lot of frustration and paint because of your videos and research.
That is awesome! This is exactly what I love to hear and why I create these videos. Thanks Lana.
