    Hello evryone. I used to do faux finishing. What I learned from him saved me a lot of grief. I'm going to share my Grandfather's tip when it comes to stirring and turning the paint. He was a painter and never ever used a drop cloth or roller. 1. When you buy house paint store the can upside down before and after opening. When the oils or other additives separate its at the bottom of the can. Slowly turn the can upright. ( it prevents bubbles ) . 2. Instead of stirring roll the can back and forth slowly and evenly as far as your arm reach about ten times. This is easier than folding not stirring the paint. Folding without breaking the surface of the paint thereby creating bubbles takes practice. Hope this helps and happy painting !!

    Every house paint works differently. The reason most of us use it, is that it is economical. I use the PPG multi pro or Sherwin Williams because it’s economical and it doesn’t leave the measles on my paintings. I also love the Glidden semi gloss. I find that you only need a little of it to get your acrylics to move across the top properly. I worked at Home Depot in the paint department for years. I learned a lot about paint. I don’t add anything to it except a bit of water. Amsterdam paint is amazing paint and I use it for my blooms swipes etc but never for pillow….its too expensive. I use a mixture of different paints for my top paints. Usually making my own pouring medium. I spent 2 years coming up with bloom recipes after taking Shelee’s first course (literally texting her while I was at HD trying to find US equivalent paints to what she was using. I am an OG at these recipes. I have been doing this for over 10 yrs.) People also have to take into consideration the weather…what works for me in New England may not work for someone in Florida (higher humidity) or Arizona/Nevada ( dry, hot) I also use a large dehumidifier in my basement, where my paint studio is. Also if you find your pillow is too thin, let the paint sit out open for a day and it will thicken. Your video was very informative and fun. I am all about the bottom line and using less products to make amazing art. Your mixture is great for smaller paintings
    Loved watching you and will continue to do so. PS: paint peeling is very oddly satisfying😊

      @aqua1082 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      😂😂😂 the weather.. SMH 🙄.. don't get me started on that. I live in Minnesota, it can snow at a nice 48° one day, the next day, it's -15° and sleeting, next day, sunny and feels like spring, 100°s in Aug....🌡️. I keep all my paint in a spare room upstairs, that I try to keep at the same temperature all yr round. Even my spray paints have a spot in my basement that they share with my fossils, stones and crystals. 😂. It's the simple things in life that keep us happy.

    • @retreivermomx2847
      @retreivermomx2847 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@aqua1082 my husband thought I was insane when I told him we had to go buy a larger dehumidifier because my paintings were cracking from drying too fast 😂 weather is a huge factor I try not to paint during high humidity. I have lost so many paintings I loved because of the damn weather. We get the same kind of weather here. It can be beautiful in April one day and 3 feet of snow the next. It’s a nightmare. 😉

    • @retreivermomx2847
      @retreivermomx2847 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @Itseemedlikeagoodida Hi! The humidity causes the top of the paint to dry too fast. When the top dries before the rest of the painting it causes cracking. You should never have a fan near your paintings for the same reason. You want all the paint to dry evenly at the same time. If the humidity is over 40-50% I won’t paint. I also won’t paint if it’s just brutally hot. I tend to paint from Fall to late Spring in New England when it is cool. I do furniture refinishing during the Summer and fall here

    Hi Garrick! I was delighted to see the title of this video! I had fallen in love with Rinska Douna's Dutch Pour several years ago. I loved the community that grew from that or at the same time as that. People began sharing their paintings and of course the mixture of paints used. The collective of beginners through experienced artists sharing freely is what kept me watching. What stopped me was when one artist began charging $99 basically for a recipe for "pillow paint" (& the new exclusive term for mixes to get cells... "cell activators.")
    Yes, she apparently taught ways to use this, but the $99 was for the "pillow paint" recipe. What a turn off! And I did turn off! Your video came up on autoplay & I'm writing this because of the title! I'm so glad the cat is out of the bag, & the free sharing in the collective continues! If you find this offensive, I won't be if you delete this. I am not knocking art courses in acrylics or any other medium. I find that very different.😂

    I once was painting the ceiling in an upstairs room during the hot summer. I went to take a hair out of the paint or pop a bubble (both were happening), next thing I knew I had to peel the whole ceiling off. So I painted a section to activate the old then peeled off in sheets. It wasn't so satisfying and I was crying. Next time I will allow myself to fully enjoy it. At the time it was time and money wasted. Both of which I did not have at the time. After the fact, once I had calmed down, I thought, "how cool were those sheets of latex?!

    Oh my God. I really really really appreciate you making this video I’ve been doing fluid art now for about a year and a half and I never understood what pillow paint was or meant. I just know that it looked very thick and it was always used solely for the bloom technique. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Now that you so graciously educated us or (me). I’m so grateful. Thank you. As far as the comparison is concerned I like the flow trawl and glue mixture results better in the store bought house paint. I can hardly wait to experiment now that I know what to do.

    I personally find housepaint easier available then all the glues and thinners available in the US. So therefore the video was more of a reaffirmation to still continue with housepaint for the blowout. But I also experienced that it does not work well for the swipe with Amsterdam color. Same results exactly in my beginner lab.

      I definitely can. I may try to add it to the lineup for 2025.

    Another excellent and entertaining video! I'm saving this video (along with your other videos) and I take them out and watch them as needed. Garrick, "THE prescription man for pour painting" maybe I can come up with a better nickname 🤔 when I'm feeling better😋. But it does kinda work😁✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

    I usually watch your videos a few times and pick up things I hadn't noticed before.. this time I learned about adding "better quality" paint to the mixture. I've tried this when I felt the pigment wasn't what I wanted but didn't want to scrap my paint mixture.

      Good stuff! Especially white paints for some reason. A good quality white paint goes a long way.

      No it does not smell at all.
      Certainly NOT like an oil or enamel. Most acrylic paints have a very subtle aroma.

    Hi, new watcher. Floetrol is a very good product but tends to get gloops. If you take a piece of panty hose, a rubberband, and a damp paint rag, you can put a piece of hose over the spout of floetrol, use rubber band to hold in place, pour and strain, wipe with damp rag, and put the cap back on, ready to go next time. Of course, it applies with any like water based product.

    Wow this is very interesting! Tks for sharing this. I just loooove watching your videos, you make them so entertaining and we learn a lot. One question though for this one...: you say you could have added way much water to your recipe but your home made pillow paint was perfectly ok compare to the branded house paint. So why do you say that? If you would added more water, your paint would have been way to thin, am I wrong?

    • @GarrickBrownArtStudio
      @GarrickBrownArtStudio  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So glad you enjoyed this! Depending on the paint and for other techniques I could have gone a little thinner but not necessary. I wanted people to understand you can make a versatile really easy.

      I typically go for wide blowouts and not super small ones... I just think my compositions come out better that way. It's all preference. 😊
