I started following him on instagram and some weeks after that he passed away. I was really shocked and sad because I really liked his work.
Actually, Gi told exactly the same things when he is in lectures. I'm Korean so I can understand Korean.
Anyways... This evidence backing up that Ethan is a genius.
Genius I don't know, but he's got a keen eye to analyze other people style, construction.
Well, when you have experience in one domain, you tend to do that. The more you're experienced, the easier and the more complex you can see (and so respect others masters as you know how incredible they really are)

That's the thing about clickbait though, they don't HAVE to watch the video, and are perfectly justified in disliking it based on the title alone. I did watch the video, I get that it's a "joke". I still don't like Ethan Becker or the channel in general, but that's beside the point. People have every right to dislike the video when he literally insulted a legendary artist on the thumbnail just for attention. It doesn't even matter that watching the video clears up that he doesn't really feel that way, the thumbnail/title itself still is BS, and people shouldn't be defending it.

I love this video. When teaching myself to draw, one of the more frustrating things was the advice I was seeing. Everyone was screaming practice, but no one explained HOW to practice.

@@johng10 ethan's videos are usually information hidden within satire. At the end of the videos, he usually drops the act and praises the artist he talks about. It's all good and fun.
@@johng10 Simple explanation: His insults are satire. His criticisms actually make Kim Jung Gi's artworks sound complicated and good, he's just simplifying it to the point that it's actually understandable. If you've seen Ethan's artworks, most of his works have a simple art style.
I've been getting into art and drawing for the first time in my adult life and I was pleasantly surprised to realize that somebody (I can't remember who) apparently taught me the basics of structure and perspective when I was a little kid and that I still remember most of it. It all came rushing back to me when I started drawing some train tracks. Apparently that stuff sticks with you for life. I just wish I could remember who taught me and thank them, because it's helped make art and improving my skills in it a lot more intuitive and quicker than it otherwise would've been.

Actually, I saw some old renaissance paintings at the museum near Burbank LA. Forgot the name of the museum but some might know what I’m talking about. Anyway, I saw that some art pieces where out of proportion in the paintings. That made me happy and having hope. Even masters can make mistakes too. :)

One of the things my 4th grade music teacher told us is something I’ll remember forever. He said the same thing you’re saying in these videos. Practice makes permanent. If you practice bad then you’ll stay bad until you try and fix how you practice.

I've always drawn so much when I was younger. Currently struggling with a diagnosed depression episode, and trying to pick up drawing again to get out of it. There are (probably) 3 types of people who dislike Ethan's videos:
1. People who just found out about the channel and don't understand the content and character portrayed in the videos, and then proceeded to not watch the entire video or to read deeper into what he's saying
2. People who either don't like this sense of humor or satire
3. That one person who goes around disliking every video because idk who cares
So in a nutshell, Kim Jung Gi's perspective mastery is Sage Jutsu level. Dayum
I mean, Kim himself tells his students to use reference when drawing.
Ya but sadly you idiots misunderstand him and started literally copying detail other people's artworks MINDLESSLY, which dosent help if you don't understand what you're literally drawing especially if you know nothing about anatomy and never listened to any tutorials...using references dosent mean copying weeb fanarts like most instagram artists out there

note this: if he said "negative" on the artist, he actually being positive about the artist, and he used this opportunity to teach the viewers (especially the artist's fans who gotten mad by seeing the title and thumbnail) on how the artist did their work by breaking down the basics for beginner, it is passive aggressive method of teaching, targeting at beginner artists who is a fan and look up to the artist he mentioned in the video.

I feel like a lot of “professional” artists are afraid to talk about the amount of studies, research and years and reference it takes them to make a piece. My first two years of art school, no one encouraged me to do this kind of work because “real art” shouldn’t need it.
Like the artist community needs to get rid of the idea that using these tools for a long time is normal and expected. I still struggle with illustration because I have to unlearn a lot of the bad habits I developed as a result.
So true!! That’s why sometimes I feel like I could never do what these artists do because I simply don’t understand how it’s even possible but in reality is like showing college level math to a kid and expecting them to understand it neglecting the fact that you need to go through the school math curriculum before that
That is SO ridiculous. I mean, I know a lot of pro artists, and they all do this kind of studies. Some of them still use the actual grid most of the time. Hell, a lot of comic artists still sketch-out with the blue lines that don't get picked-up by scanners! There is nothing wrong with that. It doesn't matter. When I started observation drawing, I didn't get it, but there are reasons why good teachers make you make transparent grids and stuff. They think the Renaissance masters didn't practiced?? There are pictures of the masters "behind the scenes" showing them drawing models with an *actual grid* composed of strings and placed at the perfect angle so they could check the proportions.
learning process of art shouldn't be like a secret recipe, because the path to improvement is not always the same for everyone, neither it should be ashamed of. Speedpaint videos of professionals on youtube sometimes led amateurs to be blind of the real grind process behind to be able to produce excellent artwork because not everthing is laid bare

I couldn’t agree more. The art community is so toxic with that mindset “oh just practice. Art doesn’t have rules!” And if you question their methods they come for your blood
I watched him doing a live drawing at an art fair in Seoul. It was mesmerizing. He passed away 2 weeks later. 😭
Dude. My man. Tha ks for this eye opening message. I never realized it before, but I was always trying to understand how I was able to draw from memory although not even close to good but in my mind an image of what I was trying to draw is an amalgamation/lifetime of referencing and things I have been able to remember by memory and combine some of these images together. Welp guess I suck at drawing.

Not gonna lie, I've been neglecting this video from the title and thumbnail alone, for like months after I first saw this. Somehow, I was able to convince myself to continue watching, and that "Step 0" made me smile in both agreeing the step (because I'm a huge fan of the basics understanding 3D space/construction) and regretting that I judged this video by its cover.
Man I needed this, I’m retroactively teaching myself to draw right after years of subpar service to my skill set

thank you for breaking down the difference between memory and imagination. I never before knew the difference until now. Maybe one day I'll be able to draw star things.
There was this one tip from a Da Vinci lesson that helped me a lot, and it is to not aim to draw/paint watch you see, but more to understand how it functions as a 3D image, so you are able to understand how it will look like and how light will affect it on certain angles, etcetera.
When Da Vinci was into drawing grotesque heads, he would go out and look for weird looking people, and when he would find one, he would follow this lerson around all day until he would understand how they look, and in the end of the day, he would sketch their faces on all angles.
Nothing is original, i felt that when i tried to make an original character and my dad just comes oit of nowhere and says “hmm i think i saw that guy on a poker card”
I would recommend doing mood boards to come up with original characters, find images that you really like, and come up with quick initial sketches using elements of those images, then choose your favorite one and turn that into the final piece. Also, I recommend getting Jazz's app called arty games in which you edit generators with different prompts and ideas and generate a prompt for a character. For Example, I used the app and generated a character prompt of an elf-soldier-female- that has a railgun, then I would find reference images and put them on a mood board, and so forth.
As a “new” artist, I’ve been searching TH-cam for tutorials and tips for the past few weeks. I saw this video in my timeline and really thought he was about to expose Kim Jung Gi. But I learned more from this video than I did in many others
