This video snatched me up. Love your sense of humor and ways of teaching. Perspective is one of the hardest things to learn for every artist but I feel the way you simplified it, when breaking down other art work, helps a lot with learning the concept more quickly. You good sir gained a new sub!
Actually, I saw some old renaissance paintings at the museum near Burbank LA. Forgot the name of the museum but some might know what I’m talking about. Anyway, I saw that some art pieces where out of proportion in the paintings. That made me happy and having hope. Even masters can make mistakes too. :)
I feel like a lot of “professional” artists are afraid to talk about the amount of studies, research and years and reference it takes them to make a piece. My first two years of art school, no one encouraged me to do this kind of work because “real art” shouldn’t need it. Like the artist community needs to get rid of the idea that using these tools for a long time is normal and expected. I still struggle with illustration because I have to unlearn a lot of the bad habits I developed as a result.

That is SO ridiculous. I mean, I know a lot of pro artists, and they all do this kind of studies. Some of them still use the actual grid most of the time. Hell, a lot of comic artists still sketch-out with the blue lines that don't get picked-up by scanners! There is nothing wrong with that. It doesn't matter. When I started observation drawing, I didn't get it, but there are reasons why good teachers make you make transparent grids and stuff. They think the Renaissance masters didn't practiced?? There are pictures of the masters "behind the scenes" showing them drawing models with an *actual grid* composed of strings and placed at the perfect angle so they could check the proportions.
learning process of art shouldn't be like a secret recipe, because the path to improvement is not always the same for everyone, neither it should be ashamed of. Speedpaint videos of professionals on youtube sometimes led amateurs to be blind of the real grind process behind to be able to produce excellent artwork because not everthing is laid bare

There are (probably) 3 types of people who dislike Ethan's videos: 1. People who just found out about the channel and don't understand the content and character portrayed in the videos, and then proceeded to not watch the entire video or to read deeper into what he's saying 2. People who either don't like this sense of humor or satire 3. That one person who goes around disliking every video because idk who cares
Nothing is original, i felt that when i tried to make an original character and my dad just comes oit of nowhere and says “hmm i think i saw that guy on a poker card”
I would recommend doing mood boards to come up with original characters, find images that you really like, and come up with quick initial sketches using elements of those images, then choose your favorite one and turn that into the final piece. Also, I recommend getting Jazz's app called arty games in which you edit generators with different prompts and ideas and generate a prompt for a character. For Example, I used the app and generated a character prompt of an elf-soldier-female- that has a railgun, then I would find reference images and put them on a mood board, and so forth.

I never felt so relieved of being called dumb in my life - "we gotta simplify for your baby brain" - educators are AWFUL at simplifying because is truly hard to get a level that's easy enough for a novice to get, for them there's nothing easier than that BUT THAT'S THE VETERAN PERSPECTIVE!!!! Or they started with that and think the grind is the only way, there's also the fear of avoiding hard work and you end up ignoring inovation. Just genius and incredibly sensitive, and delivered in best way possible, you have a funny american way ("think you're so big, think you're so tough" has to be your motto, calling him G alao fits 😂). I dont even want to learn drawing, im just a desperate struggling student and that was a life savior, it took the pressure of not knowing.

I've been getting into art and drawing for the first time in my adult life and I was pleasantly surprised to realize that somebody (I can't remember who) apparently taught me the basics of structure and perspective when I was a little kid and that I still remember most of it. It all came rushing back to me when I started drawing some train tracks. Apparently that stuff sticks with you for life. I just wish I could remember who taught me and thank them, because it's helped make art and improving my skills in it a lot more intuitive and quicker than it otherwise would've been.
You've just made it click to me why I have been perpetually dissatisfied with my artwork, why I never felt like the end product looked like what I saw in my head, why things would look too flat even though I "built" them with 3D shapes in mind, and why I would always get stopped by what I *thought* was creative block... I never did Step 0. Well, actually, I did Step 0, but I didn't transition between Step 0 to Step 1 well enough (Let's call it Step 0.5). What I mean is I *understand* 3D space and usually thought about my main illustration object in 3D shapes (not always, but mostly or partially). But I never took the idea/object in my head and actually *applied* it to a realistic 3D space, or at least not a very dynamic one with perspective. I had a general idea of the environment I wanted it in, but I never actually visualized the object *in it.* Nor from a *camera angle* other than your basic horizon-line perspective. l was so focused on the object or parts of the object that I was inspired by, that I forgot to flesh the rest of that inspiration out and have it live and fully interact with a space. Or a least I thought I did, but not enough. I would usually just start drawing the clear parts in my head and wing the rest as I moved along. But most of the time, I would get stuck at some point down the line, or I would be disappointed because it didn't seem like what I had imagined. It didn't seem as dynamic as why I saw in my head, and turned out semi-flat or uninteresting. That's because my idea, without taking the time to fully realize it in 3D space, did not operate in the space of reality. It was in my own internal, flexible imagination, where the laws of physics and reality did not apply. It *seemed* like it made perfect sense and was fleshed out enough in my head to get started, but it actually didn't/wasn't. So of course, some aspects of the idea I had partially envisioned in my head didn't even make sense in or translate to 3D, let alone in/to a 2D illusion of something 3D, because it was literally impossible. This whole time I've been drawing floating objects, at uninteresting horizon-line perspectives, on after-thought backgrounds that didn't quite line up with the same perspective as the object. I've been thinking of backgrounds as literal * back grounds,* as just some scene behind the object, something in the back of my, the viewer's, *and the object's* mind, and not as environments that my objects are actively engaged in. Mind = Blown. But I never realized because I never took the time to fully envision all aspects of my idea in 3D space until later on. My ideas were never100% realistically possible to draw to begin with. *This* is why I would always get stuck, frustrated, and move on to something else. Not because I had a creative block like I assumed. Now I know to be more aware during visualization and to be very conscious and deliberate in my visualization and planning. All before even touching pencil to paper. This realization will seriously help me turn my unsatisfying, unfinished doodles into dynamic, finished artwork. Sorry for the rant, but you just helped me wrap my head around and solve one of my biggest problems as an amateur artist just by mentioning that one simple prep-step, bro. Thanks!

@@JonDibujon ethan's videos are usually information hidden within satire. At the end of the videos, he usually drops the act and praises the artist he talks about. It's all good and fun.
@@JonDibujon Simple explanation: His insults are satire. His criticisms actually make Kim Jung Gi's artworks sound complicated and good, he's just simplifying it to the point that it's actually understandable. If you've seen Ethan's artworks, most of his works have a simple art style.
This video snatched me up. Love your sense of humor and ways of teaching. Perspective is one of the hardest things to learn for every artist but I feel the way you simplified it, when breaking down other art work, helps a lot with learning the concept more quickly. You good sir gained a new sub!

Actually, I saw some old renaissance paintings at the museum near Burbank LA. Forgot the name of the museum but some might know what I’m talking about. Anyway, I saw that some art pieces where out of proportion in the paintings. That made me happy and having hope. Even masters can make mistakes too. :)

I feel like a lot of “professional” artists are afraid to talk about the amount of studies, research and years and reference it takes them to make a piece. My first two years of art school, no one encouraged me to do this kind of work because “real art” shouldn’t need it.
Like the artist community needs to get rid of the idea that using these tools for a long time is normal and expected. I still struggle with illustration because I have to unlearn a lot of the bad habits I developed as a result.

That’s why sometimes I feel like I could never do what these artists do because I simply don’t understand how it’s even possible but in reality is like showing college level math to a kid and expecting them to understand it neglecting the fact that you need to go through the school math curriculum before that
That is SO ridiculous. I mean, I know a lot of pro artists, and they all do this kind of studies. Some of them still use the actual grid most of the time. Hell, a lot of comic artists still sketch-out with the blue lines that don't get picked-up by scanners! There is nothing wrong with that. It doesn't matter. When I started observation drawing, I didn't get it, but there are reasons why good teachers make you make transparent grids and stuff. They think the Renaissance masters didn't practiced?? There are pictures of the masters "behind the scenes" showing them drawing models with an *actual grid* composed of strings and placed at the perfect angle so they could check the proportions.
learning process of art shouldn't be like a secret recipe, because the path to improvement is not always the same for everyone, neither it should be ashamed of. Speedpaint videos of professionals on youtube sometimes led amateurs to be blind of the real grind process behind to be able to produce excellent artwork because not everthing is laid bare

As a “new” artist, I’ve been searching TH-cam for tutorials and tips for the past few weeks. I saw this video in my timeline and really thought he was about to expose Kim Jung Gi. But I learned more from this video than I did in many others

he's not wrong , i know in general this tip is easy to give to just tell people just draw alot , when people ask me i say it too cause its easier to explain to people who dont have experience with art but if you just draw alot and expect to get like kim then u wont get there,infact i dont think majority of people can get there ,but deliberate practtice is important ,we'll never know how many excercises and methodologies kim as practiced before he got to this level ,so we have to make sure we plan and practice smartly ,good luck guys

There are (probably) 3 types of people who dislike Ethan's videos:
1. People who just found out about the channel and don't understand the content and character portrayed in the videos, and then proceeded to not watch the entire video or to read deeper into what he's saying
2. People who either don't like this sense of humor or satire
3. That one person who goes around disliking every video because idk who cares
When you get roasted by Ethan, you should know you're an expert.
Nothing is original, i felt that when i tried to make an original character and my dad just comes oit of nowhere and says “hmm i think i saw that guy on a poker card”
I would recommend doing mood boards to come up with original characters, find images that you really like, and come up with quick initial sketches using elements of those images, then choose your favorite one and turn that into the final piece. Also, I recommend getting Jazz's app called arty games in which you edit generators with different prompts and ideas and generate a prompt for a character. For Example, I used the app and generated a character prompt of an elf-soldier-female- that has a railgun, then I would find reference images and put them on a mood board, and so forth.
The 2000 dislikes are people who don't get sarcasm. This is golden advice.

Or they started with that and think the grind is the only way, there's also the fear of avoiding hard work and you end up ignoring inovation.

I've been getting into art and drawing for the first time in my adult life and I was pleasantly surprised to realize that somebody (I can't remember who) apparently taught me the basics of structure and perspective when I was a little kid and that I still remember most of it. It all came rushing back to me when I started drawing some train tracks. Apparently that stuff sticks with you for life. I just wish I could remember who taught me and thank them, because it's helped make art and improving my skills in it a lot more intuitive and quicker than it otherwise would've been.
You've just made it click to me why I have been perpetually dissatisfied with my artwork, why I never felt like the end product looked like what I saw in my head, why things would look too flat even though I "built" them with 3D shapes in mind, and why I would always get stopped by what I *thought* was creative block... I never did Step 0. Well, actually, I did Step 0, but I didn't transition between Step 0 to Step 1 well enough (Let's call it Step 0.5).
What I mean is I *understand* 3D space and usually thought about my main illustration object in 3D shapes (not always, but mostly or partially). But I never took the idea/object in my head and actually *applied* it to a realistic 3D space, or at least not a very dynamic one with perspective. I had a general idea of the environment I wanted it in, but I never actually visualized the object *in it.* Nor from a *camera angle* other than your basic horizon-line perspective. l was so focused on the object or parts of the object that I was inspired by, that I forgot to flesh the rest of that inspiration out and have it live and fully interact with a space. Or a least I thought I did, but not enough.
I would usually just start drawing the clear parts in my head and wing the rest as I moved along. But most of the time, I would get stuck at some point down the line, or I would be disappointed because it didn't seem like what I had imagined. It didn't seem as dynamic as why I saw in my head, and turned out semi-flat or uninteresting. That's because my idea, without taking the time to fully realize it in 3D space, did not operate in the space of reality. It was in my own internal, flexible imagination, where the laws of physics and reality did not apply. It *seemed* like it made perfect sense and was fleshed out enough in my head to get started, but it actually didn't/wasn't. So of course, some aspects of the idea I had partially envisioned in my head didn't even make sense in or translate to 3D, let alone in/to a 2D illusion of something 3D, because it was literally impossible. This whole time I've been drawing floating objects, at uninteresting horizon-line perspectives, on after-thought backgrounds that didn't quite line up with the same perspective as the object. I've been thinking of backgrounds as literal * back grounds,* as just some scene behind the object, something in the back of my, the viewer's, *and the object's* mind, and not as environments that my objects are actively engaged in.
Mind = Blown.
But I never realized because I never took the time to fully envision all aspects of my idea in 3D space until later on. My ideas were never100% realistically possible to draw to begin with. *This* is why I would always get stuck, frustrated, and move on to something else. Not because I had a creative block like I assumed. Now I know to be more aware during visualization and to be very conscious and deliberate in my visualization and planning. All before even touching pencil to paper. This realization will seriously help me turn my unsatisfying, unfinished doodles into dynamic, finished artwork.
Sorry for the rant, but you just helped me wrap my head around and solve one of my biggest problems as an amateur artist just by mentioning that one simple prep-step, bro. Thanks!

I honestly appreciate these videos because it's hard to find videos of artist's work process, or interviewers will cut them out/not ask about it. This is such a good way to understand how people get from point a to b rather than continually asking them "lol who's your inspiration artist!"

Imagine being one of the world's best, if not possibly THE best cartoon artist, and still think that way. Impostor syndrome, maybe?
That's a problem a lot of artists have. Comparing themselve to other artists. Beginners and pros have that problem. All i can say is that he most likely sees things in other people's art that he likes but couldn't achieve himself.
