      I remember when my self care routine used to be one body lotion and one face cream. I was even using my body lotion on my face. Ever since I started doing the whole scrub, cleanser, serums thing my skin in now f$&ked up more than ever. Now I keep having to change products to correct the problems the previous products have caused.

      @Queen-xq4dj I have had a similar experience when I was younger. I have VERY SENSITIVE SKIN and spent so much money trying to clear it up in the past with products. I now seem a dermatologist and aesthetician because I have no clue what I'm doing. I do understand this is a privilege to see my aesthetician for treatments and not a necessity so I'm am blesses and grateful. I hope you are able t find something that works well for your skin! I know how annoying this can be.

      I’m not sure where she’s from based on her accent, but at least in America I feel like that’s because debt is so normalized. Everytime I use my credit card, I enter debt. It’s encouraged to enter debt to go to school. Most people won’t be able to buy a house or car without entering some sort of debt (a loan is a form of debt). So while I don’t know if she was raised in a similar environment, but at least for Americans, I completely understand why they don’t see stuff like afterpay as debt- it’s just like a credit card, and your parents needed those to get approved for a home loan, so what’s the big deal? (sarcasm, in case you didn’t realize, 740$ in afterpay is a big deal).

    • @aesinam
      @aesinam 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      @@neonradiusso true because outside the west (U.S especially), where credit cards are not really a thing, debt is mostly from loans and such so it's easier to see those as debts but when you're used to needing to have a credit card just to get a credit score to buy a house etc, it can be difficult to understand

    • @sc6658
      @sc6658 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

      DUDE this is why I don’t trust afterpay. I remember I started seeing it as an option and immediately distrusted. Like if I am going to go into debt over something… it’s going to be a large purchase like a car (and even then my ass is avoiding those luxury vehicles that put people in money pits 😭). I’m not gonna finance some name brand slides or some BPAL perfume cause if I don’t have the money for it then I don’t need it right now.

    I think “self care” has really become a way of consumerism and overconsumption. My definition of self care is just that, things to take care of myself such as basic hygiene(toothpaste, body wash, shampoo, etc) and gym membership. When I buy these self care products they’re $20 max and I buy them every 3-4 months, only buy when I run out.

Luckily I went nuts on craft supplies that I still use today, and not perishable overpriced trend products. Self-care has been twisted into a strategy to get people (often women) to buy things they don't need and weren't even thinking of buying. Really crazy how much these impulse purchases are usually the opposite of self-care in the end. Recently I'm also seeing the word "hygiene" being used in the titles of videos of this kind, while showcasing products that aren't even remotely necessary for basic hygiene. It's all manipulating people into feeling that splurging on this stuff is a good thing.
    PS: the girl in the video adding up the list for "the cost of being a hot girl" needs to realize that none of this is "the norm to get in your 20s". Most people in that age range don't have the disposable income to do that. I wish people like this would join the real world. Oh, and if your forehead slightly wrinkles when you move it, that means you're a normal young human, not that you "need" botox.

Grocery shopping for healthier foods and cooking at home, going for a walk, socializing with family and friends, dedicating time to hobbies and passions that you like. I recently found out that I don't need all that products that influencers are trying to sell us. I was shopping at mall, looking at clothes, haircare, skincare, makeup, perfumes, and thought "this makes no sense at all, it's all the same and I have these things at home already". Because who needs 10 th crop top which looks almost exactly the same? And who needs a thousands of different blushes, when an old eyeshadow palette does just fine? Why would I buy hundreds of skincare products, when my skin is not very problematic? It all just takes space.

    • @tryphenarose384
      @tryphenarose384 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Honestly, this is why me and my family shop at thrift stores for clothes. Sure, places like Goodwill don't have as much quality control, but there are plenty of places like Savers for example, that do. And you get those products cheaper than you would get them new. Especially, ESPECIALLY when it comes to kids clothing! I have a 1 and 2 year old, and we've never bought a new outfit for them, because the prices for new baby clothes is INSANE. You go to a used kids store, which we have 2 in our area, and the clothes are usually in like-new condition. Not shabby at all - again because of good quality control. People don't need to spend as much money on new things, as they think they do. And it certainly won't add to long-term happiness and fulfillment, because at the end of the day, it's just stuff.

      blush is a little different in that its not as pigmented as eyeshadow, bc its meant to be a more subtle, diffuse color (and the reds dont stain the skin as much after). however its not difficult to just blend out eyeshadow. now i DO have many shades of blush but thats because i like wearing brightass rainbow makeup so its useful to have several shades depending on what color scheme im going for; but i would never expect everyone to do the same as me! my use is niche as someone who practically does costume makeup.most people just need a couple shades that look good on them

Ultimately if you are stressing yourself out by trying to fit in your everything shower into your schedule, or stressing yourself out from the financial situation you’re putting yourself in due to the self care, you are not truly caring for yourself. The idea of self care being tied to consumption has such a strong tie to the idea that you can buy a persona. Like, its no longer a slow roll of building up your likes and dislikes, its micro trends, destash, haul, restock, destash over and over, fast paced as hell with the rise and fall of different aesthetics. They both rely on insecurity to drive sales on the newest shiniest thing, make sure to use their promo code! Its so draining emotionally and financially, but then it sucks you in by promising to remedy that with an even newer and shinier product.

    I also want to bring up the concept of race and self care. Women, especially black and indian, have struggled with being called gross or disgusting due to western ideologies. Its affected the way I've grown up because I am so worried about being called the smelly indian girl or the indian girl that stinks. Its become more of an obsession over others opinions on me and a need for constant validation by purchasing something. I’ve realized that I don't need an extensive skincare routine or a 10 stop body care routine to be clean. And finding beauty in your race will be more important then focusing on the flaws.

      I agree AND disagree. My bath routine is 100% part of my self care. It helps me relax, helps me sleep...but it's because of what I do, not because of what I buy. I light candles, I read, listen to music or watch TV on my laptop. I massage my head when I wash my hair, I slowly massage my face when I wash it. I don't think these people understand that it's not what you buy but how you treat yourself. But I am also prioritising the things you listed too! As with everything in life, it's all about balance!

Taking an Epsom salt bath with 1 candle and meditation music playing, self-care. Bringing a charcuterie board, bottle of wine, 30 candles, and two movies, excuse me what? I also had a list in my note of all the skincare I wanted to try and some of them were really expensive (I try to really manage my finances cause I’m a student and I don’t have infinite money so thank god I didn’t buy those). The point is I finally understood that I was just wasting my money and good products, I stopped buying new stuff and I deleted that note (and I’m trying to stay less on social media). I am now making more money and I have a fiance. He pays our bills and I am paying my debt off. I wish I would’ve seen your channel first. You are such an amazing black women!!

    Great video. I've been operating on the mindset of I'm generally miserable so buy a little treat, a reward at the end of the week. I then lost everything I owned and justified excessive spending with well I meed to replace. But ultimately none of it was making me happier, the new skincare item didn't work any miracles, the expensive pretty shampoo from japan nothing more than any other I've used. And I look back and see money spent. Thousands that could have probably bought me my own home, a major need now. I see my path but everything is honestly so fucking depressing it's hard to stick to.

    My definition of “self care” used to be getting a new tattoo or piercing. I felt good about it, because I was “buying” a product/service that’s permanent and doesn’t contribute to overconsumption. Now that I’ve essentially run out of space, I’ve had trouble stopping myself from buying actual products. Now I just fill my cart, look at the total, and exit the tab :)!

So if I really want to take care of myself, i should be focused on making my habitat more relaxing to be in lol

    this is why I hate tiktok, most of the women on there are already beautiful and ever had acne problems, like me. I've always struggled with acne since fourth grade, now as a 17 year old female I'm trying to clear up my skin. Another thing is that my mom told me a story of how she was in serious debt b 19 because she used a credit card and feel into the negatives. overconsumption is going to increase unless influencers realize they are telling a dream that is only gonna make them hated..

    I always leave this comment on these types of videos and so I'll say it again: anyone who knows anything about psychology or therapy would know that self-care contains at least four parts and only one of them is the physical element of it, and at the same time, that physical element of it is not having every smell of the same soap, it is genuinely taken care of yourself in a way that is needed or relevant or Etc. I'm so ready to leave therapy buzzwords behind in 2024, as an educator that's my take

    The idea of buying and using 17 beauty products as an act of self-care is insane. Like sure if your skin is THAT bad, but like her skin just looked slightly irritated. The only cost I have for myself is my nails. I would love to do them on my own one day, just because I like doing things for myself, but as a single mom not needing to do anything at all for like two hours and focusing only on myself during that time is vital for my mental health.
    What I do as a form of self-care is create. Like making a bracelet for myself, or even editing my stories. If I don't get out my creativity somehow it ends up making me sad and depressed.

She says she was pretty much trying to figure out what works for her and made a mistake doing all that. I applaud her her her accountability and honesty! I'd love to know how to do nails too! I just wear mine bear, but I used to keep them done but I was looking for ways to save and it was THE 1ST things to go lol. I hope you learn, it could save so much! These are some great ideas! The creativity is a great outlet! I like using it as a release as well 💕

    As someone who was born with skin conditions and A LOT of allergies, I have never been able to wear makeup, use 99% of beauty products, or even wash my hands with normal soap. I struggled a lot throughout school feeling as though I wasn't clean enough as I couldn't use all the fancy products the girls in my grade used. I technically have a morning, midday, and night skin routine however it's something that was created by doctors and purely for medical purposes. I HAVE to moisturise my entire body about 3 times a day, but I don't get to use creams in cute packaging with pretty smells, instead I get massive tubs of unscented cream in medical packaging.
    As I left highschool these things started to not bother me anymore, but it's horrible to think that I was convinced I wasn't clean enough and made fun of not being trendy because of skin conditions and allergies. I was never on the beauty side of social media so it makes me sad thinking about kids who may be in a similar situation to me now having those feelings reinforced by these sorts of videos...

    My tips:
    *Do not buy Anything Online!
    *Use cash only!
    *Do not splurge on yourself until all your bills are paid!
    *Do not borrow money or get loans for "stuff"
    *Do not shop when you are sad (or having a lot emotions that day)
    *Do not buy new stuff (as in anything that has not been out for atleast a year then read reviews)
    *Do not buy anything if you have not looked around, price checked and looked in 2nd hand stores first!
    Hope this helps and yes this is what I do ❤

    as much as i loveee a facemask and a lil treat.. that's not what self care really is... self care is sleep. self care is eating good foods. self care is meditation, taking breaks, showing yourself love and compassion when you're feeling down. it's awesome to buy things that make us feel good, and make our skin look good, and our hair smell good.. but maybe we should consider spending your money mindfully and not over consuming as self care as well!

    I'm a social worker and we constantly have self care pushed on us because our workplace health and safety risks are related to mental health and trauma.
    Recently a survey came out asking staff what self care activities we need at work, the examples on the survey were team lunches, meditation etc.
    The feedback from staff were role clarity, manageable case loads and clear communication from management. Team lunches make us feel better for half an hour. Good work conditions actually support our wellbeing long ter. That's what Audre Lorde was talking about. Caring for ourselves and each other is a powerful act of resistance

I never really fell for it since I think really hard before I buy but I buy the products that I need and that’s it. Yesterday I was considering spending £20 on that “life changing” summer Fridays lip balm. I’m so glad I have control. If anyone wants a tip for online shopping put things in your cart then wait for a week or 2 . If you truly want it you buy it but usually by then you realise you don’t need it at all and you save money and use it for something important!!!!

    I’m 26, getting married in a few months. My future mother in law got some Botox done a few months ago, and she was speaking to the doctor about the next time she should do it because she wanted it done again before our wedding. So after they talked about it, the doctor was like “well what about the bride? Is she going to come in?” And my fiancés mom was like oh no, she’s too young for Botox, and the doctor was like oh honey you’re never to young for Botox… when she told me that I was like yeah absolutely not. I’m not at all concerned about aging. My paternal grandmother was like 65 before she started really looking her age. I think I’ll be okay 😂 But that’s how they get you.

    I have 3 shampoo - deep cleaning and 2 gentle clean. Same with skin care - few cleaning, acids and moisture products. And one cream + spf cream. Ofc i check from time to time what is new in shops, add smth to wish list. But having 100 of items is literally waste of money- you cannot use all products before expire date. And creams are still chemicals, so there is the reason why it's better not to used expired products. Sadly there are some stories, when people decided to use expired eye shadows or creams - they all had bad irritation and chemical burns.
