The perfume?Feelings?! I don't want to smell rich, I want to be rich! I had so many questions... I. the end the scent of a person or the way they look will never trick me into thinking they are rich. I lived in America for a year and I’ve noticed how common it seems to be for Americans to be in debt. Also huge shopping sprees. Where I’m from debt is very looked down upon unless it’s for a house or something big and important.
I’ve met Americans that were in debt from shopping and holidays and random things. I was honestly shocked. I’m from Germany and that is such a no no amongst Germans. People are gonna think you’ve lost control of your life if you go into debt for a purse or PlayStation. Debt is only for a house or big investments or emergencies.

Wow 😂 I’m from Europe too, I’ve noticed since I was a child how everyone in NA finances their lives because the middle class is shrinking and yet people desire that middle class lifestyle. Debt was sold to consumers by governments and big banks to perpetuate the dying American and Canadian middle class dream, which includes overconsumption. Many banks even - Deutsch Bank profited immensely and illegally by literally stealing Americans homes with the sub-prime mortgage trap/scam and the bank and foreclosing on homes that weren’t meant to be foreclosed on.

Now an adult I realized how people actually get into debt cause of finacial illiteracy, shopping/trends/trying to please/trying to look rich/ect. For me it became easy to use a credit card and not be in debt for it and i have a decent savings account. I also refuse to take out student loans for University. My senior taught me to work first to save up for University and i'm almost there to have enough to pay it in full even if it takes me longer to get into university.

I saw one girl who was maybe 18-22 on tiktok saying "if you don't spend £1000 on maintenance per month on lashes, nails and wigs, then you're a beast" . Tiktok is really killing ussssss. The rise of influencers have been very insidious. Traditional commercials were easy to spot, but when your favorite creator just sneaks in a promo its a different game. Parasocial relationships made us see these people as friends and we treat their recommendations the way we treat our friends’. Add in the fact that a lot of their customers are young and impressionable, and grew up with it, they never stood a chance

My idea of "that" girl is financial freedom, having their own story with romance as a side quest, main quest being their own life journey, who can be kind and considerate while not being afraid of speaking up for their rights and living a life of dignity. I've cut a lot of former friends but have stronger bonds with healthier relationships now. Never been happier. I can be "ugly" and a "failure" to the world but my values and self metrics are met. That's what matters. Moving to a place that is non-consumeristic and not misogynistic matters.

Please, please don't say you have always been poor. Even if you did not have excess material things. Its important to say it in different terms. Like I didn't have that much or something else. We don't want to label ourselves negatively. I am a single mom who raised my son on my own. I did get a little help here and there from sisters with babysitting. Parents died when I was young. My son's father died when he was 9 months old. I was not afraid to go to the thrifty store to buy second hand stuff. In that way I was able to save money and put myself through college. I currently have no student loans. I give God thanks. I try my best not to get influenced by what others are doing. Live within my means. Even if I have a 10 year old Toyota car, I keep it maintained. I am happy as long as I have at least a year in advance savings, with some in bonds. Positive Affirmation and speaking things into existence. Cost a living is super expensive. Just say Lord I am blessed and you are going to blessed me with a lot more. Don"t use the word poor anymore. You are richly Blessed with 2 kids and a Husband and I pray that more monetary richness will come your way in Jesus name.

We know that luxury brands are selling name, while the quality is just so so. We're always buying from small brand/artisan that we can customize the item to our liking with much cheaper price. I agree with you 1000% and love your comment!!!!!!!! A lot of the stuff that I came across was extremely cringe to me. I feel like we are who we are. But when we exist to check off characteristics aesthetically of a trendy type of person, We create carbon Copy versions of each other because everyone is doing the same thing.
Crazy enough I thought about making a video about that too. Somedays I'm very colorful somedays I'm dressed in all black but I don't identify as anything specifically except ME, myself. It reminds me a little bit of the movie mean girls. Then again I never was a part of anything specific As far as labels go I was very versatile growing up.
I was in the band played the clarinet, was on chess team, good grades, dressed okay, had normal friends, Was a news anchor for my school, BUT never was defined by any one of the things I was associated with. I feel that way of thinking is very highschool. At the end I was always just me, and these were think I truly was excited about.
There is no aesthetic in being you. You just exist. But being aesthetic is to but YOURSRLF into a box on purpose. Now if others put me in a box, that's on then, but I would neveeeeerrrr. 💕

Same, I always saw the word "it girl" as someone like Serena from Gossip Girl (daughter of a billionaire and goes to a $50,000 tuition a year private school in Manhattan), I always saw the it girl as not someone to aspire to be or even copy but someone who belongs to the rich 1% and only exists to have the paparazzi stalk them so we know about their personal life and scandals lol. And tbh, "it girls" come and go on and what's popular always changes so I find it a huge waste of money to jump on every "it girl" item trend.

Now financial growth, no wealth like they have, no business, no nothing...Just more products to make people feel good until a new one comes out...Rinse and repeat smh

To me, being "that girl" is mostly about feeling and looking healthy, having a lot of energy, glowy skin, toned muscle, shiny hair, being able to DO things (like being an amazing artist or an athlete who can do cool tricks), but it has little to do with OWNING things. Yes, you can buy all the outfits and all the makeup you want but if clothes don't fit right and your skin is dull and unhealthy and your hair has a lot of breakage you're not gonna look like "that girl" that you listen to on TikTok. Focus on being healthy, doing sports, eating all the nutrients your body needs, work on your mind (like learning a new language or doing art), and you're going to be much better off, and also - all these things are completely free and will benefit you the most in long term!😊 Whoever's reading it - you got it💪

@SocialSymone please can you do a video on manifestation and law of attraction etc? I see a lot of influencers and ‘coaches’ preaching about ‘living in abundance’ and acting (and spending) like you’re already living the life you want rather than the life you have.
I think this can encourage people to live beyond their means. Like if you just want it enough, money will just appear like magic.
I’m not dissing manifestation and the law of attraction etc altogether, but I think there is a dark side. Influencers on their private jet to Dubai telling people that by ‘investing in themselves’ (ie spending a few grand on their course or whatever) they can teach them to manifest/attract wealth etc, etc. And that if you’re living frugally you’re not giving out abundance vibes to the universe or whatever 🙄

Oh Im halfway through this video and I love it. I used to be a victim of consumerism and spent so much money on pointless shit. I'm now two months into backpacking Asia and staying in hostels, not wearing makeup and just enjoying life. I'm somehow spending less than I did when I was in London and probably the most content I've ever been in my life. It's made me value living simply, and it took a lot of financial sacrifice to be able to save to get here but I'm grateful. This is 1000x more valuable than the bag that I put on my credit card has been

The thing is, people can be THAT girl without overconsumption and overbuying! I'll give an example with the perfume video - most of my perfumes are under £30! I invest in Arabian perfumes because they smell better and stay longer! I love perfumes so I have a collection of them and because they are affordable I can be out of debt and have a scent for every occasion! Ofc I don't go buying perfumes every week either! What im trying to get at is that you can find affordable things that makes you standout!
I also invested in a more capsule wardrobe this year and my need and want to buy more clothes has been lowered by SO MUCH! And I get 10x more compliments on my wardrobe!
I learned how to do my own hair and eyebrows as well! The only thing I regularly pay for is my nails every month and with that I make sure I get something natural because its more affordable and matches everything! Im a student in university so I need to save but i also wanna look my best at all times so I found ways to be THAT girl without putting myself in a financially vulnerable state!
Moral is - if you're broke or trying to save you can still look good and be the IT girl by being SMART with your money and how the creator said by NOT following every trend!!

I'm definitely guilty of purchasing stuff based on what I've seen advertised on social media. Like the tiktok unbrush. Most of those ads are sponsored, so you never know if the review of the product is genuine. The more time you spend on social media, the more likely you are to spend on products that you don't need. It's a vicious cycle.

    • @SocialSymone
      @SocialSymone  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Thanks for sharing. It’s very common I’ve been guilty in the past too here and there. My thing was hair products. I had/ have alopecia and went don’t a deep hole of trying to find that one thing to help me. I started making my own stuff and then my hair grew back a lot but never all the way back. And I’m okay with it now but I realize it was my obsession to have my hair back pushing me to buy the products of all these brands. None of it helped. I agree it’s a vicious cycle but when You wake up you REALLY wake up I think. plus I think a toothbrush isn’t bad, it’s for hygiene 💜

And the irl regurgitation is wild. I can't brag about a lot but one thing I've done well is manage my finances. For years ive had friends get annoyed at me for turning down expensive outings, only getting one thing on a day of shopping, suggesting inexpensive activities but now they want to get their finances in check and are asking for advice.
You will have to do it eventually or you'll never be able to help anyone, including yourself.

I couldn't agree more. The truth will set you free but first it'll piss you off. Nice to see comments telling people the truth. You are wise, I was always seen as the "cheap" friend and I take that as a compliment. You can be cheap by choice because you don't care to buy unnecessary things but have a great investment account. 💜 Alot of younger people don't get it until they go through it can speak on it later from experience but the truth is they aren't missing out on anything but struggle living to impress people. Heck, some older people still haven't realized it yet sadly. Either way, I feel it's NEVER too late for anyone to do or be better if they woke up today.

Sis thanks sm for making this video! A lot of TH-camrs that I enjoy watching heavily promote the ‘That Girl’ aesthetic and a lot of over consumerism and can’t help but think of how unnecessary it is to spend all this money that the average person doesn’t have. I try my best to make sure I have balance, yes it’s nice to treat ur self but it’s not everyday luxury or that girl, it’s also nice to be I have money in my savings girl or I’m content with what I have girl, I find it’s always best to focus on what we all have individually instead of just watching what others have out of popularity. Stay safe girls❤❤❤

I agree YOU ARE SPOT ON! I LOVE that you mentioned balance! If people prioritize and treat themselves to nice things after who am I to speak on it. I treat myself all the time. But some people are snaking the gullible due to their desires and unwilling to really become better and I don't like it. I even see no issue with saying links in the bio, but when people say stuff like "If you want to transform yourself into your dream girl" etc BUY THIS! How phony...Selling the product is okay but selling dreams is not to me..💜 💜 💜

4:52 SO SO SO SO TRUE OMG!!! I HAD THIS HAPPENED TO ME WITH COLLEGE! My G.I. Bill wasn't going to pay for my tuition since it consisted of class retakes but luckily after 3 months and selling some items on depop, as well as saving my monthly G.I. bill, I was able to save up to $3000 and in the end I had $2100 in my savings since my college tuition was $900! Phew... That was so close.. I definitely care less about fashion and designer brands now and I now save up a little after every paycheck I get.

However, it only take a few seconds for you to fall into poor habits especially with influencer culture and I have fallen victim lately to buying things and using my credit card for things I don’t NEED. When you have days/months of feeling lest than, it’s easy to fall victim to looking at products/trends. Hi! I’m a recent subscriber so I’m slowly making my way back through your content. This is great info. I want to speak as an older person without TikTok, a person who is almost ready for retirement. As the reality of not having a paycheck sinks in, I am SO GLAD that I wasn’t “trendy” or “it” in any way, shape or form, and that my dad insisted on instilling decent financial sense into me. I have a pension waiting for me. I have savings. No, I don’t have fancy handbags….but I’m going to be able to enjoy retirement because I thought about MY future instead of impressing people (who couldn’t care less and couldn’t matter less) in the present.

yes yes yes!! and let’s be real, it’s been time for the conversation about the general narcissism surrounding “that girl” and “main character” content, which only focuses on how you are viewed by others and achieving a feeling of superiority through that external persona. Ladies let’s say it together, superiority stems from insecurity! Nothing will make you grow more as a person and live a fulfilling life than finding your worth at its essence, separate from looks and possessions, and embracing how connected we all are, so there is no one main character but rather a beautiful constellation of souls ✨

Now since all brands left the country, people focused on local manufacturers and buy a lot of stuff from marketplaces. I find all these exhausting, because you are right. If people don't know they are being marketed to even when they "think" someone is trying to help them "become" an aesthetic they are FISH FOOD FOR THE SHARKS. Like I said, nothing against the links (We all gotta live in this society) But some people are really unknowingly falling for people selling them "Dreams" and I don't agree with that sort of business practice. This is a great video! I’m a financial adviser and having grown up pretty poor, I had to sacrifice looking like an ‘it girl’ in my teens and early twenties to achieve my goal of being financially stable.
I’m now 27 and thanks to those sacrifices I now have the money to get my hair done on occasion, shop at the nicer stores, and put more effort into looking good if I want to.
I also own my own home, have an investment portfolio, and a healthy retirement account for my age, which gives me a strong sense of security and contentment.
I’m far from an it girl (I still drive an old Toyota 😂) but I’d be nowhere near where I am today if I’d been sucked into the trap of keeping up with the Joneses.
If any young girls are reading this, get obsessed with personal finance. Listen to podcasts, read books, and never take financial advice from broke people (you’d be surprised how many of these influencers are in debt)!
Your time will come to have all the nice things, but if you first spend time building your career and money habits, you will be able to enjoy those nice things forever. It’s better to be rich than it is to look rich.

Whew. So much said here. I think people need to be better aware of where they are at and think for themselves.

I thought you were gonna drag me cause you said girrllllll in the other comment 😂 I am glad we think alike and you must be my long lost sister, I don't do makeup either or rarely shop, love to travel from time to time too but I invest and save so much when I do ANYTHING it doesn't even make a dent in my budget for leisure. So I like to eat food lol....but you are 1000% the stats say everybody ain't rich...and definitely not ready for an emergency. The brain is a terrible thing to waste.

Thank you for speaking about this. So many people are spending everything on this crap and so close to being homeless.
