  • This is the first video in a mini-series of myself threading and chambering my first barrel. I am NOT an EXPERT and this is the First time I have done this work. I have NO training and this video should not be used as a HOW TOO. I am learning as I go. Comments Appreciated!

    if you'd like a tip from a machinist. to get the correct measurement with a dial indicator, the ball of the stylus needs to contact the work piece on the spot that is 90° to the stylus.
    it's hard for me to explain without drawing it, but if it's not 90 degeees as the stylus moves up and down, the contact point changes position on the circumference, therefore giving you an exaggerated reading.
    I know it's a small thing and is basically a moot point in this situation, but I thought I'd share just in case you're like me and like to learn.

      I appreciate the advice. I am by NO means an expert and this is actually my first real experience with machining/trying to make something serious on the lathe. Posting this video will likely get a lot of both knowledgeable and not knowledgeable people to provide advice. I appreciate your feedback and will apply next time. Learned a lot through this process and would do it a bit differently the next time. Learning as I go!

      @RobsReloading yeah, that's awesome. learning is half the fun, isn't it? the indicator reading is skewed such a small amount relatively speaking, I guess. that it doesn't really matter in this situation, but i think it's good to know how things work so that when it does matter, you know how to make the difference.
      I would have been curious to see what the runout was in the bore where the center was contacting vs. as far in the barrel as the indicator could reach, when the barrel was running in just the steady rest. just for academic reasons, is all.
      I've only done one barrel between centers, and I was able to get the barrel through the spindle. so the process was a little different. on a new unchambered barrel, and not having everything already machined perpendicular and parallel I wonder how hard it is to get the spot for the steady rest true to the bore without being able to get the barrel in the headstock. It sounds like some good fun to be had. im looking forward to the next video.

    I like the video and the more detailed information the better. If it’s long it might be hard for some people to watch but if I’m not working I would watch for hours 👍. Thx for videos.

      It ended up being a bit long and probably boring for some. I enjoyed the process and did the best to document it. Little bit of a challenge doing things for the first time and trying to film.

    Enjoyed the video. One little tip i mught add. When you put your live center in the head stock put your indicator on it. You may need to skim it to run true to your lathe then mark it so it goes back in the same place or you will be skimming it every time.

    Might just be lighting but as you cut the threads it appeared the muzzle end was moving. If I was doing that I'd easily focus only on the job at hand and forget to triple check that things haven't moved on me.

    Seriously, the muzzle end (4 jaw chuck end) looks like 1/8" out of center 👀 and if the dial indicator stylus linkage is not perpendicular to the work that's inaccurate, they don't work at a diagonal sideloaded like that. 😮

      Holy smokes! I wasn't paying attention watching the first time, but went and looked again while cutting the threads. DON'T USE THIS TENON!!! There's no way possible it's concentric to or in alignment to the bore. If you set up this way you need to check the run out at both ends, at the chuck and at the live center. I assume your through bore is not large enough to mount the barrel through the head/chuck?

    Like others have said, for your test indicator to read accurately it needs to be at 12* to the work and the pivot perpendicular.

    Not sure if i asked already as i am asking opinionions on experience with non gunsmithing lathes and turning barrels. Do you find yourself really healdback by not having a gunsmithing version?
