    Seating depth! Seating depth! Seating depth! I know you're educated enough to know when it comes to trimming group sizes that Seating depth is extremely important yet in all your video talk no mention of Seating depth. A little tweak 2-4 thousands and that low es load could easily shoot consistently in the tenths.

    Van Halen played a concert in my home town in 1980. That is where Eddie Van Halen met Valerie Bertinelli. Bertinelli's father was an executive with GM and had moved to Shreveport to open a GM production plant. And as they say, the rest of the story is now history.

    7:05 ..."and then I had a much larger group.." That would probably be the best 5 shot group achievable by me. Great shooting.

    Be great if you could max out without the tuner first by using charge, seating depth, neck tension, etc., and then jump to the tuner to keep the testing controlled.

    When I shot 6.5x47 about a decade back or so, I found that H4350 worked better with heavier bullets and Varget worked better with the lighter bullets. I ended up with 130s with Varget at around 2920 FPS. I had a dual-role rifle that was for F-Class and PRS matches before they were called that.
    Also, primer can greatly impact ES/SD in the round. Back in the day, Wolf SRs seemed to be very popular. I personally found CCI 450s to work in my gun.
    Though I don’t shoot them anymore, 6.5x47 is probably my favorite all round cartridge. It was so easy to tune for. My rifle was barreled by GA Precision for a .292” no-turn neck and throated for the 140 VLD.
    Ultimately, I went to .260 Remington and ran AW magazines for more speed and better feeding because I moved toward primarily shooting PRS.

  • @pickin4you
    @pickin4you 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know nothing of this caliber, but for me, none of those groups are small enough. If it were me, I would do more load work and get it as right as possible before adding a tuner. Then it will be even better, but to take a tuner to tune in mediocre groups is a waste of time. You also might want to try the new Hornady A-Max match bullets. The ones with the machined aluminum ballistic tip. Just my 60 years of experience here. Also, keep any copper solvent out of that bore. I have used nothing but Hopes #9 forever. I used copper cleaner once and never again. My custom barreled Remington 700’s would break in and after about 40 rounds, no copper at all. Just needed a couple of wet patches then a dry patch and it was spotless. Ammonia will eat pits in the steel over time, causing the bore to collect more copper.
    Try more powders. You just tried two. My 22-250 custom, I had to go through about 7 different powders and 3 primers to see what MY rifle liked. You can do all the research you want about that caliber from gun sites, but your gun is unique. Your chamber is not the same as anyone else’s, so you need to work more on the loads to work in YOUR rifle.
    I also agree with someone else’s post about flat based bullets for BR shooting. Boat tails only make a difference for long range shooters. 1000 yards plus.

    This is really promising. It's weird for me as I always have seen Berger bullets do well seating long and Hornady bullets seated short. Looking forward to what comes next. I have no problem seating short, that way I can seat to throat erosion.

    @maxtheroofer8004 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I sure am impressed with your abilty to run the lathe and mill, you have come to be one hell of a gunsmith!
    it seemed to me that your rifle might like those berger bullets better, using those with the H4350 might be the ultimate combo, obviously you'll have to play with seating depth.
    the ELD M also might shoot just as well, just have to play with seating depth on those. although this is apples to oranges, i shoot 178gr ELD M in my .308, and it likes a 20thou jump the most.
    Most of us are scared to shoot much, with the unavailability of components. i have only been loading for rifle for about a yr and a half, so i havent even had the chance to stock up on components. im sure you have stuff pretty stockpiled though!
    i enjoyed the video, as always. Looking forward for more

    Most shooters have no idea what 6.5x47 is capable of achieving. I started with 130gr ELD M (1:8" twist), then 147gr, but, now I sactrifce a little bit of accuracy and shoot 153gr A Tips (1:7.5" twist) so I can reach out to 1,000 and buck the wind a lot better for F Class. Best of all, barrel wear is just 5 thou in 900 rounds.

    Great video. Looks like your 123 ELD load is the right ignition combo (bullet/powder/primer/case) so I’m curious why you’re looking at adding a tuner rather than just try changing seating depth for better accuracy? Have you not had success with that method in the past?

    Very informative video, and nice tribute paint job to Van Halen, one of the true innovators in modern electric guitar. I noticed a couple of omissions in the barrel specs: Krieger barrels are highly respected for accuracy across multiple disciplines of precision shooters...what was the finished barrel length, the outside barrel diameter, type of rifling and twist rate? Best wishes in continuing to search for the ultimate consistent accuracy out of your handloads and rifle; off to a very promising start and please post updates.

    You can't get get consistent results with the Hornady OAL tool (Stoney point). Alex Wheeler use to have a good TH-cam video on finding the lands by the stripped bolt method. I find this better for multiple reasons. First it's more accurate, second it gives you a number to track the throat for your notes. Notes, having good information can be a time savor and component savor .

    I would test many berger bullets with different shapes & weight to find the right one (without polymer tip). I've got the same kind of issues with my first 6.5 (the Creedmoor). It was very difficult to tune my loads. I changed powders, primers, seating depth, etc. until I tried a different bullet shape. I dont know if it has something to do with the leade angle or throat length, but I never had this kind of problem with the .308W or the 6BR.

    My 6.5X47L arrives this Sunday therefore very interested in this content (and your reloading videos). From my research, 6.5x47 is ideal for 123 -130gr bullets, 140's are tad heavy (?), I'll follow closely how you go with the 140's. Would be interested if you run the Hordady A-Tip 135gr? • @scottcrawford3745
      @scottcrawford3745 ปีที่แล้ว

      140's are for F-class and PRS match long distance. He's building a benchrest gun., so 100 to 136gr is his sweet spot there. He DID go with a faster twist barrel, which is generally more for the longer heavier bullets. Most BR guys like to play with the ragged edge of stability, shooting a twist just fast enough to stabilize the heaviest weight they'll shoot, and shoot bullets to the lighter weights.

    • @Central_Desert
      @Central_Desert ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scottcrawford3745 Cool, I have a 28" 1:8. The 140's Hornady ELD-M's are about the only ones available in 6.5 here in Australia, there are a few 143's and 153's. Berger and Lapua pills are rare as rocking horse pooh.

    • @scottcrawford3745

      @@Central_Desert Sierra, Barnes, Nosler all do at least 2 match bullets for 6.5, one in a lighter weight and 1 heavy. Might scrounge some of those up ?
      With an 8-twist you can ignore the 153's.. they're not very likely to stabilize with anything over a 7 twist.
      Your 28" barrel length at least means you can push them fast enough to try all of the 140's and maybe the 142-143 ones. Some 8-twist barrels love the lighter bullets like 123's and 136's and shoot them into little tiny groups... don't ignore them. Same as the 155 Palma bullets by Sierra for the .308 Win seem light, but are engineered for the long range to keep them supersonic to 1000 yards. If you can push a 123 to 3000 fps, that should stay above Mach til a grand, too. The 6.5 pills are very slippery with amazing BC's we could only dream about in the 1990's.

    I think with these 6.5s (fast bullets & twist rate) choosing the right reamer specifications (leade angle, free bore) and kind of rifling is very important. What kind of rifling is it, 5R ?

    Just adjust seating depth to tighten the group. Tuners shouldn’t be the go-to as a resolution for big groups. They should be used as a last resort if your groups open up slightly. They’re brilliant devices but they make people lazy and stop load developing properly.

    I’m a big fan of your channel but your making a lot of odd choices for benchrest. Benchrest rifles are typically 6mm, 1.250” straight 22” barrel and flat base bullets.

    Seating depths?

  • @kriswilson5400

    Barrel break-in is a myth - load and shoot. 130gr pills work better in the 6.5x47 - get some VLDs and jam them with H4350 and get an Edgewood stock protector to help protect the finish on your rifle when cleaning it with the rod. Since you're using one of Alex's stock, you may as well use his method on finding the lands - more consistent than the Hornady OAL gauge.

    • @br4713
      @br4713 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Barrel break in is not a myth. Same thing as for "cold bore shot" : it depends on the barrel. I've seen a video of a guy showing no cold bore effect with his rifle, he simply concluded that it was a myth ! About barrel break-in, I have 2 Lothar Walther that began shooting better after 500 rounds. After asking other shooters I learnt that it was better to do a break in with this brand.

    • @kriswilson5400
      @kriswilson5400 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@br4713 Agree to disagree then (as would Erik Cortina). My last 4 barrels (2 x Krieger, 1 x Brux and 1 x Bartlein) did not require 'break-in'. Yes they sped up after 150 rounds or so but that's separate to what people refer to as 'break-in'. I've suffered no ill effect with accuracy or fouling and have won F-class Open matches with these barrels. I don't know anyone shooting Lothar Walther - they're not on any of the top F-class rifles out there.

    • @br4713
      @br4713 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kriswilson5400 Lothar Walther aren't the best, but that's all we have here in France. American barrels are way to difficult to import here. Maybe on the best brands you've mentioned you didn't noticed any significant accuracy change, but it doesn't mean it's a myth generally speaking, it depends on the barrel. Also there's the guy of "winning in the wind" channel who made a video about that, showing clearly the machining marks on a high grade barrel with a bore scope before the break in procedure..
