  • Part 1 : Well here we go again. I've had these on a trailer since last fall waiting on some warmer weather to start cracking into them. This time I have two 1986 Polaris Trail Boss 250 two stroke classic ATVs. They are 'mostly' there but have they been ridden hard or hardly ridden? Let's see what it will take to put them back on the trails with the family.

    I just bought a 92 trail boss from the original owner. Its surprisingly quick for how old it it. Now i just need to vet the lights and speedometer to work

      That's awesome! I'm still working through these two. Getting parts for these '86 units is slow.

    I picked up an either 85 or 86 about 2 weeks ago. Had sat for years carb was just as bad as yours were. Cleaned it up along with the tank, runs good. Problem is I have a ribbed carb boot, but from what I've looked they stay the same 85 through to 99. Their quick machines I just need to get mine running right!

    really looking forward to this series! I have 2 of these exact same quads in about the same condition and am doing a budget restore. Currently fighting with a leaking petcock.

      That’s great! We will be doing a petcock on one of these tanks soon as we work to get the old fuel out and move toward first start. What do expect to need to do on yours so far to get back in the trail?

      @@VermontLife careful when ordering, these aftermarket petcocks are harder to find because they are on the right hand side of the machine an essentially have to point the opposite way of most petcocks. Mine was leaking so the new one I ordered also leaked I suspect a ill fitting Oring Gasket, Im thinking about making a cork gasket an putting 2 small individual orings on both screws to see if that will solve it. Otherwise my back brake system is in the same condition as yours and was hoping to see how you dealt with that, couldnt get the handle bar resovoir open and caliper looks to be siezed along with the rusted disc. havent progressed into first start because of the petcock so havent been able to see any other major issues yet. I have thoroughly cleaned the carb and reinstalled it. I also was told these machines need the air filter installed to run properly. Mine will also need new front tires, chain is severely rusted but ive been holding off on that till i know the condition of the engine better. I'm concurrently working on a basket case moto 4 350 so im watching your series on that as well.

      @@firehades2007 It's been impossible so far to find a petcock that exits to the left. OEM stocks seem depleted. I'll either have to run a longer fuel line or use the components in the new kit to rebuild the existing which is what I'm hoping to do.

      @VermontLife received the scrambler 500 petcock today. My screws wouldn't quite fit but the cork gasket off of it fit on the previous new leaker. Viola no more leaks!

    Love it man. U make the best vids by far!!!
    Do you think u have all the parts needed from the parts bike?
    Is it hard to get parts for this bike?

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Peter! I’m confident we will get one running. Finding parts for this first generation has been a little tricky due to many sites listing parts as compatible across more generations than are actually compatible. Overall, each hour we spend working on it makes it easier to recognize what is needed and weed through the non compatible listings.

    Same quad as mine but mine won’t idle on its own unless ur hand on the throttle

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bet you could fix that with some idle screw or carb air screw adjustment. How do you like it. (I haven’t ridden either of these yet. Still working through the repairs.)

    How much would you price a fairly used but running polaris trailboss 250 2x4? My neighbor is selling one for $500, not sure if it's worth it.

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These days a running atv for $500 is hard to find. The trick is determining how much maintenance has been done or not done. $500 running could still need a belt, brakes, have lower compression etc that would all lead to driving the cost up overall. If you’re handy though you can do a lot with a little :).

    Plastic is stock

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Seems it. I’m also noticing this is beefy plastic. It’s thicker than many other quads I’ve worked on.
