Thanks for dropping in,
We are Anne Marie and James Thompson. We put this channel together in 2019 as a collection of our life experiences as a video journal for the future. We invite you to sit back and enjoy life made in our slice of Vermont.
As the channel has evolved it has come to focus on enjoying the outdoors, particularly on small off road vehicles (ATV's, Go Carts) and what it takes to repair, rebuild and maintain them so we can spend time outdoors enjoying trail riding with our friends, family and neighbors.
The hope is that through these videos people will learn and be inspired to take on an old project and realize the satisfaction that comes with bringing classic ATVs back to the trails for another ride.
Our channel is always kid friendly.
Subscribing and watching really does help so please consider being a part of the fun and subscribing at bit.ly/2kPku2P

How to Fix an ATV on a Budget
This video is not about my best work, but about making it work. If you're looking for a video showing how to repair on a budget then you might find this helpful.
Starting with a rough one. This Gen 1 Yamaha Blaster belonged to a friend of mine, who passed it on to another friend of mine, who I offered to see what I could do to put it back on the trails.

What is the wire color of the wire coming from the harness to the coil
Harness to the coil is typically orange although it would come from the cdi and not the harness if that helps.
That is a great fix. What was leaking on the quad you restored?
Nothing leaking on it. I have either seen Blasters with nothing on the hole and this area full of mud/debris packed in that area of the case. (Not great) I’ve seen tape. (Had tape on one of mine until I did this.) Or I see folks reuse the existing rubber plug by pulling the oil lines then capping the holes in the plug with silicone/rtv etc. This fix is awesome as it requires no extra work, works if the through plug was thrown out with the oil kit, no silcone, no money etc.
Can’t wait for your next video to come out . Keep up the great work you do I will keep watching.
FIXED!! i had no spark. Replaced key, stator, cdi, starter switch etc etc. no spark! then i read someone on here said to unplug the key and jump red to brown and black to black and white!. i figured i had 2 new key switches!! but hell ill try it. well it worked!!! immediately got spark back. 2 brand new key switches would not allow it to spark but the key worked for main power, weird!! thank you foe who posted that. just jump the key plug you have nothing to lose trying.
Interesting… brown to red completes a circuit. Then the black to black/white tracer closed the other circuit… interesting. Thanks for posting back. I’ve had switches come in wired in the reverse as some quads need the black/black white tracer circuit open for spark. Yamaha Blaster gen one closing the circuit kills spark for example.) Seems vendors post more model compatibility than is actually the case sometimes. :)
engine waz runnin like crap
how did you take the choke cable off
She looks like she's broken in
More Moto4 episodes ?? I have one as well .. mines an ‘88 . 😊👍
Thinking about it. This one is proving to be pretty solid so some upgrades could be nice to improve comfort for longer rides.
I’ve got a big bear 350 mine is a 94
Nice machine
Thanks. It’s a ton of fun.
I've got a 300 that I'm sealing up and came across this video in search of a gasket. I have my crankcase split and am having trouble finding a gasket for it. Do you know where I could find one or have a recommendation as far as a gasket in a tube? Ritter is not an option for me so anywhere else please if ya would
The crank gaskets? Grab the part number off a place like rockymountainatv.com by searching under oem. Once you have the part number and put it into Google you’ll find a bunch of places to get them. I know Amazon and EBay also have them.
I've run L.R.D.pipes on all my 250rs.The shorter the pipe the greater the top end The longer it is the greater the bottom end.
Thanks for the insight. I think I had my understanding backwards. (In my list of things to learn about is more about two stroke pipe design.)
Hey bud if you want to stop motor from rotating old trick for you . Pull spark plug get 24 inches of cotton rope back piston down in cylinder about a inch feed cotton rope into spark plug hole leave 6 inches of rope hanging out of hole rotate crank until piston stops won’t damage anything because it is soft when your done rotate crank back down and pull out rope .😊
Interesting, thank you.
I need help just got a big bore kit and a Vito’s exhaust but idk what jet’s to put on my stock carburetor???
Hmm, I’m not sure your stock carb is going to do that any justice. Best advice I can give is join a few Facebook groups for the Blaster and post your setup. There’s a few good groups but the one I’ve had the best knowledgeable advice out of is called ‘Yamaha YFS200 Blaster’. I’d be making guesses and have a feeling that if you want to achieve a noticeable increase in power you’re going to want to change up your carb and air intake as a minimum to see the gains. Join that group and get a feel for what guys are doing with the 240’s. There’s a lot of power potential there.
Ooo ok thinks
Got a quick question when when u get the big bore kit does the ring gap come checked already or u got to do it your self??
Always double check if you have the means. (It should be fine but it’s nice to have the confidence of having validated if you’re having an issue down the road and have to tear it apart to see if you should have.) Ask me how I know :)
Got an another question what’s the gap right gap for the rings ??
What was your right jet’s ??? Or what jet’s or good
Ultimately with this setup they are keihin jets so the numbers don’t align to stock Mikuni jets. This is a 45 pilot and 165 main now. If you’re doing a stock build the stock carb factory jets would have been 32.5 pilot and 230 main from Mikuni but again these are two very different carbs between this one and a stock one. I wouldn’t have been able to use a stock carb even with larger jets on this build.
I am having a hard time finding the clutch cover and back plate for that, we're did you get yous put of curiosity.
I have a link in one of the videos in the series. Ultimately it was an aftermarket but it fit great. If you check the descriptions in the videos in the series you should find it.
Junk yard dogs can be nice to . Just how much work you wanna put into them .
Absolutely! You should see some of the other salvage atvs I have in the playlists. I enjoy these abandoned ‘projects’.
@@VermontLife I followed ur blaster build did great job on that . I'm across the lake in ny
@mikewisher4083 small world. I keep thinking of heading out to NY a little west of you to NYOA for an XC race if I can get myself organized.
That is a sad quad . Can it be save or is it worth saving . How do you like the 240 Blaster ?
Loving it (the blue one) but it’s not a 240. It’s once bored over on an oem cylinder with a 3mm stroker crank and rechambered head (among other things.) I’d have to do the math but it’s not a 240.
@@VermontLife keep up the good work and I will keep watching.
Awesome videos in this series u just bought one of these for $500 and it runs and drives all over the place trying f to find proper videos on some repairs for this is difficult so thank you for all the work you put into this bike
Thanks for the note and glad it's helping.
Is the starter wheel (aka big sprocket) that the bearing rides on supposed to be tight or loose on the shaft? The original "starter wheel slides on and off very easily, the new one is going to take some pounding to get on
That doesn’t seem right. I can say I didn’t need to pound anything. Do you think cleaning it up with a Brillo pad or some sand paper then greasing will do the trick or is it way off in size?
@VermontLife Not sure, it appears to be the same size. I'm getting ready to go out there and try to figure it out. Thanks for getting back to me, I didn't think it should be so tight. Getting a wrong/bad part from ebay, imagine that 😒
How does it ride compared to a stock blaster…. Or I’d also love to hear how it is compared to other machines you’ve ridden if any. Thinking about building a long travel blaster for myself. The blaster in mind has a kx250 engine in it.
It's a night and day difference. For anyone thinking of building one up for themself I'd say to build the suspension first, then motor if you still want to. Improving the suspension handling changes the entire feel and rideability even with a stock motor. Considering you already have a big motor I think you'll find that going long travel with some decent shocks and a good steering setup will really open up the fun and comfort.
Bees wax would on that my dad taught me that
I had beeswax handy due to having a few hives here and left over burrcomb. Thought I’d try it.
Keep up the great builds you are doing I will keep watching
Hi I have a question do you know where the start or motor is ?
Lower front of the motor. It’s about the size of a can of soda and will have a black wire running to it from the battery.
@@VermontLife ok thanks
What’s it WEIGH u 🤔??
I actually reached out to the owner for some specs. It’s about 4.5 lbs with hardware included. The plate is .5" uhmw polyethylene.
I like boomerang skids.
I hadn’t heard that name before. Im having trouble finding them on Google to check them out.
Nice I’ll check em out for the Warrior
Interested to know please. I use a cheap “bt intercom t com “ unit for work. It’s great because a lot of the other cheap units have an annoying interference through intercom. Have you found it to be the case with this ? Or is it pretty quiet during use? Thanks
I haven’t had any interference. It’s much cleaner compared to using an FRS radio which I also use for other communications that tends to have a lot of static. Especially clear when on the cell network and going phone to phone too.
@@VermontLife thanks for the reply !
On YOUR BEST RUNNING MACHINE PUT A 14 tooth front sprocket ⚙️ on it and leave the rear alone(assuming 40-41 tooth) and PLEASE TELL ME HOW IT DOES!! mine is WAY BETTER and lOVES alil’ LOAD👍💪. The ridablity is OUTSTANDING. You will LoVe IT
I was actually thinking about that last night. One of the Blasters is a 2nd gear wheelie throttle wheelie machine on a 13t front and I’m thinking of going 14 for some stability and additional speed.
@@VermontLife I’m not so much a speed guy with the blasters as I am w/BANSHEES (you can see in my shorts/post) but just the rideablity in the woods, trails, and hills with out having to shift as much is WAY LESS WEAR on the SHIFT FORKS and having to run the rod out of the machine in high RPM. It is the BEST upgrade for the $10 I did on it
Loving the blasters. Looks like you bought every one in town! Lol Everyone needs more ZZTop in their life!
@Tharpification gotta love some good ZZTop :).
A special thanks to you I've searched and talked with so called technicians that couldn't or wouldn't help with my overreving issues Your video helped me to results needed Thanks again
That’s awesome! Glad it helped.
Going to have to change channel name to Blaster Life lol 😂
I know right. It’s a Blaster farm over here right now.
I've got a question... what kind of oil do u use in the crank case were the clutches are ..I changed mine awhile back I got some good mods but now clutch is slipping some...I just ordered a Vito's kit for it and I don't want to make a mistake on what type of oil to use to soak them in ....
U helped me so much I could not find the thing under the reverse handle
lol 😂
doesn't the stator have seperate charge, trigger and lighting outputs already, and can't the lighting output go through a half-bridge rectifier without floating it? (maybe small capacitor to make it continuous dc that doesn't drop to 0v every engine rotation)...?
Great vid I am looking for the same thing for my bike ///stator also WHAT COLOR IS THE FRAM LOV IT WANT THE SAME FOR MY BIKE 03KX250 M1
The frame is ‘neon yellow ps-1104’ by prismatic colors. Thanks for the note.
I didn't understand the "on / off switch test you did? It cranks when on or off. I think it was the off and on switch the whole time. You never really tested it.
Watching this guy try to pull a flywheel is painful
One of the first I pulled. Looking back now I cringe a little bit :).
And I take that back… this one was the Polaris I did with in the last few years and yes, painful. Super neglected atvs.
You got this, keep making more videos of this go-kart!!
Hey I had the same lrd exhaust on mine same plastics to u should be good never worried about burning the plastics
Thanks for the insight. It’s a little odd but I can’t see that any mounts were stressed or bent to see why it’s so tight. So far so good though.
Could this be the cause of spontaneous full throttle condition ?
Yes, an air leak can make your two stroke rev to the moon like a runaway. Kills compression making starting and running tough but the lean condition can/will wreck a motor.
First place that bike should have gone to is the dump😂
Pretty sure it was on its way there until I stepped in. Pretty solid learning experience when just about everything is in a broken state :).
Would it work with the original lighting circuit or would i have to do anything different to make work with oem lighting circuit in my head seems like if i still wire yellow and red wire and still have rectifier on same wire and then earth battery to frame/ engine would it still work ?
In this case I converted the lighting system to dc power then put a regulator in to provide a consistent 13-14volts to the battery so I didn’t kill it. In the scenario you are proposing you would need to find some form of regulator/rectifier that does the conversion from ac to dc, then regulates the output to the battery otherwise you risk destroying your battery. I’m out of my depth though. I would suspect if you put a dc regulator on an ac circuit you would have issues and fry something.
Hey bro, im watching from Australia, ive been watching this build series for ages, just saying, top work and effort mate honestly. Mint bike
Thanks for the note! Glad you’ve been enjoying the journey.
This was already said but when comp testing u kick until needle dont move. Over 3 kicks ur barely bringing any comp up
Thanks for the insight. I’ll give it another go. It’s been running well so it would make sense. That or my knock off compression tester is also way off :).
Yup kick it like it owes you money. Yeah those cheap compression tester are junk, tusk makes a cheap on that is alrite.
Front grab bar looks funny not matching the frame.. reminds me of a stub nose semi truck
@@CourtJ_ml9to kinda looks like the front grab bar is missing it’s SO BLACK vs THE GREEN
What was ur piston to cyl clearance and ring gap clearances????
I’m anxious to know the clearances too.. sound like alil piston slap.. I presume it’s a new top-end on this build??
We build motors and our HEAT CYCLES are PASSES on the DYNO-JET CHASSIS DYNO!!😮😂🤣
Dyno out here would be awesome. So far I haven’t had any luck finding a place in driving distance that will do/can do an atv.
@@VermontLife they are hard to find because of cost and the knowledge of how to even run one. The one here in Illinois is a “load cell dyno jet chassis dyno (motorcycle/dirt bike/SxS/quad/go-cart)
I hope u didn’t use synthetic (premix) in ur oil-gas mix too.. on “break-in” so the rings seat is 16:1, 3-heats “slight revs” up to operating temp 170’s with crappy “non-synthetic” oil
