    I’m a med surg nurse and experiencing the low staffing ESPECIALLY since the pandemic.. I am totally burnt out and it’s so unsafe when our ratios go up and we have multiple fall risk/confused patients. Im over it, feeling like management does not care and yet blames us for patient safety. I’m considering PACU.

    • @wedgepressure4313
      @wedgepressure4313 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Kassiex5 call at my current lab is one night a week and once weekend every 6 weeks. It can vary more or less depending on the lab. You can also work strictly diagnostic labs that don't do interventions. There will be much less critical patients there and you won't take call. In a cardiac recieving facility taking STEMIs you will definitely have critical patient's but it's a team of 4 people to one patient and a cardiologist and sometimes an anesthesiologist so it's a huge team of people and lots of help to go around. Nobody is alone in the lab. In a good lab ther other nurses make you better too, they are supportive and can give you tips to make you fast and efficient. I will personally never go back to the floor. The lab is a blast!

    Great video. Students have to know the realities of nursing. I'm a new grad, and I have already had students. Some of them were great and really proactive, really helped me out, some of them just stood and watched while I was taking care of a patient who was desating. They do some charting, which I have to check for accuracy later when I have time. Then they leave at 4 or 5. Being a nurse on your own is amazing, and way better than being a student. With that said, it's responsibility. It's stressful. Students should know the reality, even if just anecdotally, because like you said, you don't know until you experience it yourself. When I was a student, I didn't bear the brunt, and there were some things I just didn't see, you can't fully participate as a student, because you have a nurse behind you. But I tried to be involved as much as I could. Also, I just want to say, even if you have a CNA, that's one CNA for 28+ patients. They can't take care of every one of those patients, whenever they need CNA care. So even if you have a CNA, you are still going to be performing personal care. You as the nurse are accountable for your patient. CNAs are here to help us, they can't do it all.

    I did almost 2 years in nursing/home rehab and now almost 3 months in med surg and we are always understaffed. The pace is so fast and most days I’m doing my job and the cnas job. I will jump as soon as I can, this is burning me out.

    24:00 3 months into nursing and you confirmed my suspicions. They're hazing me. I shouldn't be getting 2 total cares, a bariatric patient, and a habitually noncompliant patient who's needy, rude, and practically a resident because they have no other place to go.
    I'm always behind on charting and have to stay past 8pm. I've been getting thrown under the bus when it came to report.
    One almost got me arrested for patient abandonment because he "mistakenly" told me I didn't need to give him a pt who was being discharged at shift change. The charge nurse and director called me as I was driving hone. The following day, he was kissing my ass as he introduced me to the patients during bedside report as a "great nurse".
    I planned on doing 2 yrs bedside to gain experience but, I don't care anymore. I'm trying to get into PACU at the same hospital, fulfill that 1 yr requirement before I quit, and start my masters program in March. I AM DONE.

      Don’t doubt yourself! Get the experience at least about 6 months. You will be fine, you may make mistakes and that’s ok, learn from them and ENJOY learning new things. Most important don’t rush anything, take your time giving meds, read the medication well ASK QUESTIONS QUESTIONS even if you feel embarrassed to ask. There are many realms to nursing and you are starting off in the right direction. After 6 months if you feel it is too much or you are unhappy then move around. Good luck to you and welcome to the field! I am a recent grad currently in the ICU. I understand your concerns. Good luck to you all!

    • @CinemaDoll137
      @CinemaDoll137 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder why that is too. I'm the only Black nurse in my PCU unit for the day shift. Everyone else is a white/brown Puerto Ricans who talk to each other openly in Spanish so I'm stuck clueless and ostracized from the clique. I go into some white and Hispanic patients room and they state I'm not their nurse although I have seen them like 5 times before noon and already gave them meds. They'll see my name on the board, look back at me, and say "you're not (insert my name here)!". Mind you, I have a white sounding name.

      I think it will be hard at first getting a pen position because employers like to have new grads as full time staff due to the fact that they don't like to pay prn money to a new grad that they invested in by training them. However, I believe after a year or after you've gained experience of whatever unit you start in, you can go PRN, or apply somewhere else as PRN. Just keep in mind that PRN positions prefer well experienced nurses because at times they tend to float PRN nurses too.
