    www.redlettermedia.com - Finally it's here! The truly epic review/critique/analysis/film making educational video of the 1999 film "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" There was so much to discuss with this film it had to be long so please don't complain. If you think it's too long then don't watch it. In this opening segment I discuss the major flaw of The Phantom Menace which is the characters and the lack of connection with the audience.

      And what i have realized is that the people who are just getting into Star Wars now, they dont hate the Sequels, prequels or originals. It's made me rethink my view of the prequels.
      And for the record, Qui-Gon is a stotic man who is angered and annoyed by many things around him, but he chooses to be patient and gentle instead. He defies his superiors at many times, often to their faces.
      Padme is a child who carries the responsibilities of an adult. She is not afraid to sacrifice her own life if it means the benefit of her people. She is not corruptible, but doesnt assume others share that trait.
      It's not that hard even if you only use episode 1.

      They don't stand on their own at all. They're an illogical mess. And even the things I used to like when I was 9, like the Anakin obi wan fight, look bad now. The comparison they make with the sword fight from 007 is spot on. That fight is raw and realistic. The Anakin fight is like a video game.

      +Zer0dog I thought that was KOTOR 2, Chris Avellone said they thought of doing something in the clone wars era when they were first approached, but either way you definitely are right, and we got two amazing clone wars shows that is 100 times better in every way to the prequels. There are many film school teachers who make their students watch bad films and take notes about everything that is not done well. Then they have a group discussion based on the notes. A good example is Plan 9 From Outer Space because you can show it all during a two-hour lecture and have plenty of time left to begin discussing the fukk-ups. Probably my favourite that the film school teacher who was in Flying Saucers Over Hollywood mentioned was, put simply, "rambling dialogue". Ed Wood could write and direct dialogue to *sound* the way real Humans talk with the emphases in the right places and the sentence construction and such being right. It was just that he took 500 words to get across a point where only 50 were necessary.
      Lucas has no idea how Humans really speak in terms of sentence construction, shortcuts, how to get to the point, and on and on. Not only does he take 500 words to get across a point where 50 will suffice, but the 500 will be so awkward and unnatural that you might need them to be repeated so you can reprocess them.

Where is the evidence that GL had people telling him no during the OT? Why do I have to take these 4 people from a trailer park serious when describing characters? Not only are the prequels miles better than the sequels I’d say they’re pretty good movies in general with a very interesting political plot that I’d say is relevant for today’s politics, just watch Alex Jones describe them better and in more detail in 2 in a half minutes than this “hilarious” film critic needed however long this playlist is.

But in retrospect the sad reality is Anakin's past life, was that of a whiny, obnoxious and self centered teenager who never really matured or grew up. Introducing Anakin at like age 8 was just a WTF decision by Lucas?? Anakin should have been around 19 in Episode 1 and a dark bad ass, that Obi Wan was trying to reform and bring over to the force.

      Dan Arschloch In all honesty, this review of RLM's is certainly not my favorite. I vastly prefer the one for Attack of the Clones. But where exactly is the line drawn between "thoughtless fanboy rant" and "intellectual discourse of cinema"? Is it the fact that he talks about plot holes? Even critics of respected media venues today do that.
      In my opinion, this one, although it singularly has and debuts many of the staple memes RLM is known for ("It's so dense," "...Worst thing since my son," etc.) they had to find their niche (also a probable lack of budgetary security at the time, I would presume.)
      Stoklasa's most potent arguments--the lack of memorable characters and the overall absence of any cinematic language (other than that shot of Anakin and Padme's shadows in AoTC; a rare sight to witness such visual expressionism in one of the prequels) stand out most among viewers who appreciate these critiques.
      So again, I just ask, what would have made this thought out? If Stoklasa had just expressed high praise for the prequels? Stoklasa makes arguments that could have been made by any New York coffee slinging film critic. His WAY of telling what he found issue with may have been a bit more... upfront than others who engage in these sorts of movie discussions may have otherwise been. But other than the particularly vitriolic approach, and the character acting of a rather unsettling narrator in Mr. Plinkett, it seems all the chips have fallen in the right spot for this to be identified as a "thought out" review.

      LJK401 Might be true, but my point is that it is an unfair test, multiple variables as to why they couldn't describe the characters, I was able to name several traits for Qui Gon (less so for Amidala, she was just shit, at least in the first film). And not really, what do you know about the Emperor in the first one? He's evil and an emperor, both of which break the rules of this test i think.

    • @avogaming7129
      @avogaming7129 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      LJK401 It drm, my point still stands, this test has too many variables to be a true test.

    • @avogaming7129
      @avogaming7129 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Ancap2112 Yes there is xD how you can you say with a straight face that there are no possible variables other than one film being better than the other. For example, let say that you have seen episode 1 3 times and any of the original trilogy 50 times. You are of course going to understand the characters from the original trilogy better than the ones in the prequels. While they may not be as memorable they do still have individual character traits, some of which are subtle and you may not seem them the first time you watch the film. From a character development standpoint Qui Gon is well developed (at least from my perspective, you get a feel for who he is as a character, a jedi who is meant to be a call back to the OT Obi Wan Kenobi, a mentor figure. But at the same time he is a character who is very much against the main jedi order, believing that they should serve the force rather than use the force like a tool. He follows it to a religious degree). And having additional movies greatly helps when developing a character, additional movies these people will have seen many times. So while if you did just look at a New Hope they MIGHT be better developed than the prequel cast, there is no possible way of knowing, at least from this test without asking someone who has only seen Episode 4 and Episode 1 and seen them the same number of times.

      " Chancellor we're peace keepers, not soldiers" there's your answer, and the clone wars series does show that the jedi do start to wear armor, but only enough that they are still highly mobile and able to easily use their lightsabers, their main source of defense

    • @USSMariner
      @USSMariner 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      852kronos As a kid, I always assumed that elements of Vader's suit were repurposed from his Jedi armor. The metal grieves, puffy suit material, and the hard upper collar/shoulder plate very much match Obi-Wan's description of Jedi being the "knights of the Old Republic," which is already implied to be fairly literal given that they use light"sabers".
      EDIT: Medieval knights often wore long tunics in place of and prior to the advent of chestplates and plate armor. Vader's suit is also quilted, which could easily reflect chailmail.
      Unintentional? Sure, but most of Vader's background in the original trilogy wasn't nailed down until ANH was mostly finished filming.
      Lucas only made him Luke's dad when writing Star Wars II (the unfinished sequel concept prior to ESB,) so rationalizing stuff after the fact isn't new to SW.
      Overly complicated, insane bullshit is, which leads us back to the Prequels.

    6:54 I keep thinking about and using the characterization test to this day. Really helped me put into words what I found so bland and frustrating about especially the Phantom Menace. What a great way to just really just measure how well a character is fleshed out, especially if you do it after just one viewing.
    Like, I love Rogue One but there are definitely some rather significant characters that I feel like a lot of people would fail to say much about (would they even remember their names?)
    Meanwhile, with Andor I could say a lot about, like, Cinta, and she probably has no more than a handful of lines throughout the entire show. Kinda funny that they both had the same main writer (Gilroy). I guess the importance of having a good director and good staff?

      Your point about the name thing is startlingly accurate. I've known a lot of people who would argue that solo/rogue one where good movies, when asked to name one non-legacy character they fail 9 times out of 10 and at best can name one character. I dont think those films are especially bad (at least compared to the depths that I've seen cinema go) but its astounding how badly they failed to establish their characters. I wonder if it wasnt for all the games, comics, books, and toys would people even be able to name the non-legacy prequal characters.

      In all fairness, Tony Gilroy was working with Chris Weitz (who worked on Twilight New Moon and later the 2022 Pinocchio remake) in Rogue One. In Andor, he got to work with his brother Dan who written and directed Nightcrawler (I haven’t watched it yet), and Beau Willimon, who created House of Cards, and the difference of writing quality between the two is pretty damn stark.

    I’ll say this about the Sequels vs Prequels: The Sequels are better on a technical level, but the Prequels are better on a conceptual level. Like, the Prequels clearly had an end goal that they were working towards even if the execution was poor. I’m sure the Plinkett review of TROS will put this all in perspective.

    The funny thing is that a lot of people like to say that the Clone Wars redeems the prequels. Nah dude, it straight up REPLACES the prequels. There is legitimately no reason to watch episodes 1 and 2 now that we have the Clone Wars. At most, you’d miss a couple references to certain events from those movies, but even then you can pick up on most of those things as you watch the show (the fact that Anakin grew up as a slave on Tatooine, that his mother died, that he’s the chosen one, that a clone army was created on Kamino, etc). The only prequel you need to actually watch to understand the show is Revenge of the Sith. Most people say the Clone Wars makes the prequels better, but I’d argue that, because the show is so much better written, that it makes those movies look even worse by comparison.

    I hear over and over that the prequel trilogy "are good movies, just not good Star Wars movies."
    No, no they fucking aren't. They aren't even close to being good movies. They fail in every single aspect of good story telling. The *only* reason people are so forgiving of them and still talk about them is because of their Star Wars label.

    • @heywoodjablowme1624

      yuoke "The prequels are very creative in their new planets, settings"
      Dreaming up backdrops, settings, and aliens is just about the easiest (and most inconsequential) part of the Star Wars movie making process. A water planet? A desert planet? A lava planet? Not very creative if you ask me. It's like George played Mario 64 and said "yeah, let's go with that."
      "the base idea for the stories are actually good"
      I have to strongly disagree with you here. I thought George's base idea for the prequel trilogy was the worst, most unforgivable thing about them. The prequel trilogy still could have worked with the stilted acting, groan-inducing dialog, overuse of CGI etc as long as the base story was good. It wasn't... it was absolutely horrible, and it made the entire trilogy unsalvageable.
      "Everything was mostly executed really good, but the plot... ...the main character is a mary sue, no creativity"
      I agree with your points (and was also sorely disappointed with The Force Awakens), but at least the movie itself was competently made and was a decent popcorn flick, which is far more than can be said about the prequels.

      ***** Sounds design was top notch (with the sole exception of using F1 engine sounds during the race in Episode 1.... that was extremely lazy and disruptive), music was also good, although I thought Williams played it safe when composing the prequel soundtracks. But yeah, there isn't a whole lot about the prequels to really appreciate outside of some of the design aspects.

      yuoke Revenge of the Sith is crap though. Yes Revenge of the Sith has a clearer story then I and II. But that doesn't mean it's good. Characters are still bland and uninteresting. Anakin is still a whinny piece of crap who falls to the Dark Side in a snap. Everyone is blind at how obvious Palpatine is behind everything. Padme is utterly useless and is resorted to a crying damsel who dies from a ''broken heart''. The final Lightsaber fight is way over the top in every way and the only thing that gives it the illusion of depth in any way is John William's amazing score. Episode III is easier to sit through then I and II, but it in no way is good.
