Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Review (Part 2 of 7)

    Part two now focuses on the second biggest problem with the Phantom Menace, the story. The mystery plot lacking direction and emotional involvement was really the other big problem. No tension, no drama, no stakes. Characters aimlessly follow along the events.

      ***** I don't know if that's really true, though. Everything I've ever seen indicates to me that the original Star Wars was a fluke that was basically goosed up in editing by other people.

      There's an excellent TH-cam video about how editing saved Star Wars. The pacing was WAY way off until the editors started shifting scenes around. It's really worth a watch. George Lucas had so much fucking help that made a good movie, including his wife at the time.

      @@revolverswitch I'm fairly sure George Lucas is an average film maker. Apparently there was another director or something that wasn't credited, and I feel like it's safe to say that he probably played a hand in making Star Wars actually good.

      I saw this movie in the theaters when it came out in 1999, I had just turned 5 years old. I only remember bits and pieces of seeing it on the big screen because I slept through parts of it. I always thought that, in the original Star Wars movie, that Obi Wan wore the brown robes and hood because he was hiding out on Tatooine, pretending to be some kind of hermit. The Empire wiped all but wiped out the Jedi, so he was being incognito. I never would have guessed that he wore the same brown robes in his prime as a jedi knight.

    Even now I still have no idea what the Naboo thing was supposed to be about. Naboo is a planet, one member planet of the Republic, right? And the Trade Federation is... some sort of company or group of companies that deal in interstellar trade?
    So I guess this situation arose when somebody taxed somebody, and the taxed party rejected this...? But who taxed who? Naboo is an actual government, so presumably they taxed the Trade Federation's trade activities? But then why does the Trade Federation have an army? This is like if the Mayor of Detroit put tolls on the roads into and out of the city, and the companies who were paying responded by raising an army and blockading the city, right? Which... would be seriously weird.
    Or is the Trade Federation an actual government, like Naboo? Did they tax trade to Naboo, and that's what the Naboo government disputed?
    In Star Wars it was so easy - as soon as you say "The Empire", people know exactly what that is. They know how an Empire behaves. And when we see Vader choking a guy, etc, you instantly know that it's an "Evil Empire", and you know exactly what that is and why people would rebel against it. The movie never offers explanation because there's no real need, since it's playing off historical parallels that we all know already.
    But the Phantom Menace presents us with a situation that doesn't map to anything the audience can be expected to know instantly. And yet, it also declines to explain any of it to us. So never once in the film does any character tell us what the hell is going on with this dispute or the blockade. Never once do we even see the effects of the blockade - are the people starving? Is the economy collapsing? We just don't know. For all the film tells us, the people of Naboo could simply ignore the blockade completely and just carry on with their lives.
    Seriously, this dispute and this blockade are meant to be the driving force of the whole plot - removing the blockade is what drives the main characters all the way to Coruscant and then all the way back again. Yet we have no idea why it's there or why it's bad.
    And this from a movie that by all rights should have been made by the very best movie makers in the history of the art. It's truly baffling.

      Look at the wealth of the planet, the lack of industry and agriculture. It's heavily implied that the Nabooans import all of their goods and food products. Without any imports everyone on the planet is running out of food and toilet paper. The Shatnerians are either trying to force the Nabooans to make them a middle man in the trade into Naboo or to give the Shatnerians a complete monopoly on the delivery of goods and services into Naboo.

      I think when he wrote the prequels, Lucas was trying to channel Dune, with ideas like the Trade Federation being sort of similar to the Spacing Guild, and Naboo as an independent aristocratic planet being kind of like House Atreides. The difference is Dune actually takes a little bit of time to explain what these factions are and where they sit in the setting.

The writing style, story progression, character depth, etc... is everything that fans of its predecessor hoped for. It does anything but disappoint. As before, they eagerly await the next chapter. Then, The Berenstein Bears Go to Camp hits shelves (the alleged third chapter in the Lord of The Rings epic.)
      Just suppose for a second that this actually happened.
      I think fans of the first two would be justifiably perplexed and disappointed. And they might talk about it to one another in a loathsome tone. And it might annoy you (after all, The Bearenstein Bears Go to Camp is a fine book in its own right...it's just that it feels woefully out of place in this particular context.)

      +An Outrage I'm not a die hard enough fan to know much about the 1983 outrage. I don't know the specific gripes or anything. I personally loved all of the originals. And I did share a lot of the disappointments expressed here when I first saw Episode 1. I think there are some clear differences in the style of movie making (IMO, this guy's review makes some incredibly poignant observations in that regard.) I just think there are some serious errors that can be objectively identified, and aren't just figments of some over zealous fan boy's imagination.
      As for my point, you came off (per my interpretation, anyway) as if you thought it was silly of people to hold a specific movie to a higher standard and scrutinize it more thoroughly than some other random movie. I was trying to create a scenario that captured and magnified the essence of this one, so that its nuances would be easier to see. My point was that the context matters. I figured there might be some part of you that would agree in a more extreme case.
      The Berenstein Bears is a children's book series.

      It's probably not fair to be critiquing movies you have either never seen or haven't seen in over five years. Palpatine is clearly the "phantom" menace as no one yet knows he is plotting to eventually rule the Galactic Senate and restore the Sith to their former glory. The Trade Federation is just a pawn of his to create a false crisis in which he can seemingly defeat the enemy and become the big hero, gaining him popularity and power. The TF obviously doesn't know this, but they know Palpatine is really a powerful Sith Lord and they think he will help them become profitable and successful. If you watched "Revenge of the Sith" then you would know Palpatine has Anakin kill all the leaders of the Trade Federation and that's why they cease to exist when the Empire is formed. It's actually a really good plot for those with attention spans.

    The whole movie breaks down after the opening title crawl.
    You're telling me that the Jedi's are being sent as negotiators, but they're conducting the negotiations on the seperatist ships rather than a conference under surveillance on neutral ground. Why did the Republic need to send any diplomats? Just do it over the phone. I guess they have more credibility by sending jedi in person but they're not even official government representatives, or are they?
    Seriously, are the jedi like the FBI or are they a religious order independent of the state? Does the Republic have a theocratic influence if monks can operate as generals or is the force interpreted differently by different people?
    Why is the separatist blockade so thin? Just fly your trade caravan in on the other side of the planet. Maybe there are more ships behind the planet that we don't see, but even then it just looks like it's spread too thin even if fighter coverage supplements the blockade.
    Naboo isn't like some fringe colony right? Look at the architecture, that's old, this is a well established colony, this area of space seens largely peaceful, especially because Naboo lacks a major military. Surely the Republic can round up a military force from local planets or neighboring systems and wipe the floor with the paltry trade federation fleet.
    Also, again, why send jedi diplomats? In real life, we have embassies in some real sketchy places. So the film is trying to tell me that we don't have any diplomatic presence on the stable Naboo from the galaxies major governing body. Maybe the Trade Federation attacked the embassy and captured the diplomats but that would make them look really bad and could be met with, again, a republic fleet telling them to pack it in.
    Since it's a federation it isn't even operated under a homogenous centralized structure right? So a collection of individuals specializing in commerce decided to back a militarized blockade of a planet with a high potential for producing a large amount of agricultural goods because two members of the organization were told to by a hologram of unknown identity for a reward we are never told about.
    The Trade Federation just let them do it? Maybe Gunray or whoever operated on his own. The trade federation could have used their military power in conjunction with the Republic to kill Gunray, maybe establishing stronger relations with the Republic, an organization that runs everything, and killing off a band of extremists laying in their group.
    Also, given that the Naboo people are in a borderline state of war with the Gungans, why is their military so terrible? Not to mention that if the system was attacked by a large militant force then it could take some time to get relief from the Republic, and they would have to rely on local forces in the meantime. Ugh, this movie makes no sense.

    • @HeadshotProductio100
      @HeadshotProductio100 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It's actually pretty clear that a show of military force would make Gunray surrender. His tactics in diplomacy are very passive, for example, he feigns ignorance when they call and ask where the jedi diplomats are. This screams of cowardice to me and sending an automated scout drone would show the Federation's fleet was no threat.
      Gunray would be facing a sizeable in space engagement against a superior force while also maintaining an occupation on the ground.
      He would have no choice to surrender at the threat of Republican military action.

      Don't forget the fact that Newt Gunray is a viceroy. In real life, a viceroy is a state appointed governor running a territory on behalf of a monarch, usually a king or emperor. Is the Trade Federation a monarchy? Wouldn't Gunray's superior be pissed off that one of his lieutenants did something that could start a war? DID FUCKING LUCAS EVEN KNOW WHAT A FUCKING VICEROY IS??? It's not like this an exotic form of office, viceroys still exist! Fucking Canada has one!

    • @TheGrimPoe
      @TheGrimPoe 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Jason Fenton you pleb. you answer those questions by interpreting the movie, not being spoon fed answers, would you expect a character to just start reading off stuff to answer these in depth details. You could say the same about the original trilogy: Doesn't the empire fear repercussions from taking a peaceful democratic ship hostage. Why would building a death star resolve the differences in ideologies of the empire and rebels? Why is the empire even occupying tattooine a shithole planet that has literally never advanced in millennia. Is it strategic? the list goes on, but I can extrapolate my own answer to these questions because im not a pleb.
      Clearly the separatists employ a paramilitary army to coerce better deals and are fairly cutthroat. Clearly the republic embassy and governing body is too weak or inept to solve this by mere conference calls. The only negotiations that the federation would respect is a higher up in the governing body ie the Jedi knights who have a very high rank in all degrees of government. The republic army is also pretty ragtag since they need to literally clone whole swaths of troops for the clone wars
      Yes the Jedi have the authority to act as the FBI, as we see Obi-Wan investigate both count Dooku and the Emporer
      the blockade is so thin, because its really strong, those ships are numerous enough that to penetrate it the freighters would be smuggling in very small cargo or be blown up since trade vessels aren't military grade.
      extrapolate that the hooded figure has immense power, realize they would be fairly unopposed and can create a war time economy with a trade monopoly. They make money and do their jobs. Also yes, companies have paramilitary organizations, see Enron or the pmc's fighting in the middle east right now.
      clearly the droid army is cheaper and better trained than any ragtag militia. Also, we can assume that the republic does not have the political clout to organize a fleet to apply military pressure to the fleet.
      Jedi are trained diplomats and hold high power in government, thus a negotiation with them is much better. This happens all the time IRL. Imagine handling a hostage situation with an average cop vs a police chief/ negotiator. I would trust the chief over the cop and be more compliant.
      clearly the trade federation cares more about money than with complying with the law, also it seems pretty unanimous decision. See the republic negotiating with the TRADE FEDERATION, not Nute Gunray.
      What in the movie implies that there is conflict between the humans and the gungans? they isolate themselves from each other and are fine with that.

    • @HeadshotProductio100
      @HeadshotProductio100 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +TheGrimPoe But why does the republic have such a weak military? How do they run anything with no muscle? Also the Gungans and the human looking residents of Naboo are in conflict, I think Boss Nass comments on how he hates the Naboo people that Padme is in charge of.
      Hearing Yoda talk in the originals it seems as though he would not support jedis being used as generals or official government agents. It's all very utilitarian for a group of monk types, he himself said "war does not make one great."

      To be fair the actual guy behind Mr. Plinkett said he liked the Desolation of Smaug and thought the first hobbit movie was okay so maybe you could consider cutting these movies a little slack.
      I mean acording to Mr. Plinkett one of the worst things about the prequels was its poor acting well The Hobbit Films actually do have a lot of good acting like Ian Mcellan as Gandalf.
      Not to mention the characters are way more interesting than the prequel's monotone speakers

    Now we know why every scene is so dense. When the scene has no importance to the story then it's boring. Having the baddies be "droids from the trade federation" instead of the imposing terminology of Storm Troopers from the GALACTIC EMPIRE

    • @Darkslayer289
      @Darkslayer289 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      What I want to know is why they didn't design new droids. Why would they use ineffective models? Were they cheaper to make and able to mass produce them, or they were being tight-wads and didn't want to spend the money for better models to fight the Jedi and Clones?

    • @felipelaser1763
      @felipelaser1763 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ***** Your raise a very good point. Also...did the droids still need control ships to operate in episode 2 like in the first movie? Why not just have the clones blow those up and have the whole army fall down like piles of scrap metal?

    • @Darkslayer289
      @Darkslayer289 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Felipe Laser They should have the droids be more like the Geth in Mass Effect. Have you played Mass Effect? Well the Geth gain complexity the more of them there are in close proximity. That's what they should have done.

    • @felipelaser1763
      @felipelaser1763 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The Geth are a prime example of how freaky robo-baddies can be. God knows they gave me the heeby-jeebies, especially those husks. I had to do the derelict freighter with the lights on at full blast to get through that. Funny how Bioware (both here and in KOTOR) can make stories that would make much better Star Wars movies than Lucas. ME is more a little more sci-fi than Star Wars BUT at it's core I believe it's a Space Opera/Space Cowboy epic that has plenty of qualities that would make for a GREAT Star Wars movie. It's aesthetic has been surprisingly influential in sci-fi movies, the most recent being Guardians of the Galaxy (that city scene where the protagonists are all fighting to get a hold of the Orb thingy looks JUST like the Citadel interior with a little Logan's run thrown in).

    • @felipelaser1763
      @felipelaser1763 9 ปีที่แล้ว

Get fucking real mate. Let me guess you hate Awakens cause it copies from a New Hope right? Sorry but it's still better then the shit that was the Prequel Trilogy. Awakens didn't fuck up the lore to large extent the Prequels did. Hell the Holiday Special and Ewok Adventure are better then all Prequels combined.

    I gotta say, about the topic of clutter ruining the shots, one of the things I think the cinematography of the originals did so well as to craft these shots which highlighted a particular character or object and lent it dramatic relevance. I think one of the best examples is one of my favorite shots in any movie, being the one of Vader standing on the staircase after challenging Luke on Cloud City. There's all this cool techno stuff around him, as well as dramatic mist, but none of it distracts from the imposing figure of the Dark Knight, whose massive silhouette stands out against the background.

    right after rescuing the queen on naboo as she's being lead to some unseen camp, why don't the jedi go arrest nute gunray then and there? what exactly was their plan after getting into an occupied city anyway? i mean, if they hadn't stumbled upon padme, what would they have done?
    they attempted to arrest nute on the command ship, so they obviously have that in mind. and given that they allow a girl and some other guys to go capture them in the end, they must have thought it was a manageable task, yeah? the battledroids, after all, 'aren't a problem.' so, there's no reason to think the jedi are intimidated by the droids that may or may not be guarding nute in the throne room.
    you're the jedi: you have the element of surprise, you're in the city, you know the droids are likely engaged elsewhere doing droid shit during an occupation, you know the general whereabouts of the bad guys and can catch them off-balance before they dig their heels in and possibly set up defensive positions making it hard if not impossible to get back to this very spot later... so they decide the plan should be to risk their lives running a blockade and come back in a couple of daze, hopefully after the senate, who hasn't done shit for you so far, makes it all okay?
    just go get nute while you're right fucking there, you fucking morons!

      His whole idea of rewriting the story so it was more like how Germany got into WWII would have worked at least on a couple levels. Logically because the events would flow more realistically, since, it has happened, and also it would connect with the original trilogy in the sense that the original borrowed a lot from WWII films. How the writers missed that opportunity is astounding.
