    www.redlettermedia.com - Here it is folks! Finally! My epic review of Star Wars: Episode 2 Attack of the Clones. Part review satire, part parody, part commentary, all prequel hating vitriolic comedy. This transformative work delves into this film in detail as well as more general topics about why the prequels didn't quite "work" for most audiences. Part one is an overview about expectations and how the audience is left in the dark to fend for themselves as far as figuring out what's happening in the movie.

    There originally was a cutaway from the elevator scene at one point during filming where Anakin and Obi Wan laugh and roast marshmallows and play grab-ass in the woods (set to the same music as the love scenes on Naboo), but I thought their friendship could be better explained with a simple story about Gundarks.

    The Prophecy idea is so dumb! Vader killed the Emperor out of love and compassion for his newly found son, not some prophecy made millenniums ago.

    • @SonofTiamat
      @SonofTiamat 9 ปีที่แล้ว +88

      Rick Steck Probably because Lucas just made up the story for the prequels as he was going along.

    • @derekswartzl5123
      @derekswartzl5123 9 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      Exactly. I think the prophecy devalues Vader's sacrifice. In the OT he saved Luke because he changed into a good man. Now the sacrifice is a lot less meaningfull because he was destined to save the galaxy.

    • @felipelaser1763
      @felipelaser1763 9 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Michael.TH-cam I agree. By making it prophetic instead of personal, the emotional weight of the scene is taken away. When people watch this part, they're not gonna be saying "oh this is that vague thing they were talking about in the prequels!"

    • @SonofTiamat
      @SonofTiamat 9 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Felipe Laser Not only that, how does that "balance the force"? He helps Palpatine kill off all the Jedi and then *eventually* kills him. Not exactly a net-gain.

    • @felipelaser1763
      @felipelaser1763 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah it cancels out. Since Lucas was influenced by Buddhist and Shinto stuff in the OT, I feel like "balance" is probably in the same ballpark as that (not to mention really vague). Balance to me usually implies some Yin-Yang equilibrium in which the Jedi and Sith have to both exist, otherwise neither do. Just saying "destroying the sith" or "saving the jedi order" would have made some sense. We don't really know what "balance" is to begin with though!

    A lot of responses seem to be missing the point as to why Plinkett acts the way he does in these reviews. Yes, he is deliberately making mistakes and talking in that slurred voice. There's two main advantages to this style:
    1. You can describe Plinkett without discussing his job or what he looks like. He comes off as a psychotic idiot savant with a depressingly cynical view of cash grab cinema, and a quirky, passive aggressive sense of humor. See what I did there? Just by applying the same test that he came up with in his review of The Phantom Menace, we can show that he's creating a fictional character with a more memorable and interesting personality in these videos than any of the characters in the first two Star Wars prequels. If he can do it, there's no reason why Lucas and his multi-million dollar movie budgets should not have been able to.
    2. It allows him to come off as "academic" without thumbing his nose at the viewer. What if Plinkett sounded like a Harvard professor reading off a script? It would come off as pretentious and dismissive of people who aren't necessarily so educated on movie structure and tropes. Instead he's playing a character who is so ridiculous and laughable in his clumsiness that the viewer is supposed to feel more intelligent than the reviewer, which in turn makes every coherent and interesting point the review makes come off as common sense rather than a highbrow intellectual argument.
    This is smart filmmaking and subtle manipulation of the audience of a high degree. We can learn a lot both about reviewing and the art of filmmaking from these videos.

    I think this is what I hate most about the Star Wars prequels: they robbed us of any meaningful portrayal of the friendship between Obi-Wan and Anakin. When Anakin finally turned on him in Episode III, the lack of any believable friendship in Episode II didn't give us any context to care.

    This might be considered a trivial complaint by some, but the idea of the Jedi temple being built on Coruscant just feels a little out of place IMHO. It's like a religion building their nerve center in New York City or Tokyo instead of Jerusalem or Mecca.
    The Jedi temple should be located in a place like Naboo or the planet Yoda lived on when he met Luke ('A New Hope'). Some place where the jedi would have breathing room to practice their ways.
    Actually, the Jedi temple on Naboo would have been an interesting twist to the story... but the script would have to be completely rewritten. Which it should have :)

    • @hanburgundy4317

      Coruscant is the center and Capital of the Republic and is where both the Senate and any embassies are. The Jedi are the appointed guardians on the Republic and the keepers and enforcers of its laws - why would their temple be anywhere else? Moreover, Coruscant is (near) the center of the galaxy.

      Yeah it really takes away form the mysticism and monastic culture of the Jedi. It's like putting the Jedi Temple on Park Ave. in NYC. I guess its more like Vatican City. I guess they have to have access the senate and all that boring crap so they need to be near by....bummer.

      Still, at least one thing the prequels need less of is all the political crap that gets shoved in there. If the Jedi Temple were elsewhere, it would mean ultimately we'd get something more interesting in the prequels.
      I know in the Extended Canon, the Jedi Temple post-original trilogy was located on Yavin IV, which although still being near the Rebel base of operations is still relatively remote and hidden.

    What I don't get is why they just didn't make Obi-Wan the main character in all three movies. Have him this young apprentice who is thrust into training Anakin but ultimately failing because of his own inexperience. Like Obi being young and Anakain not that much younger would have made it easier for them to form some friendship, which could have in turn made the betrayal in the end have more of impact. Also, if Anakin was older in the first movie could have made an attraction between him and Padme begin instead of the lame sudden romance in this. Eh whatever... so many what ifs and things that could have happened...

      Your stereotypes about women are just that - stereotypes. Whenever someone tells you... oh wait... you're the one telling it... anyway, whenever someone says "well well well, you with your male fentesy kekekek, but in REAL LIFE, no woman would ever keep dreaming boy", that's a sure way of knowing they're full of shite.
      Funny enough, I've seen some online discussions about AOTC with mixed genders (the DiF forum is one I remember concretely), and the women are actually more into that romance - the men are just embarassed by his awkward behavior, and the women are like "yea, he's kind of a dork, but also kinda cute", of course not every woman, but that's the point.
      If you think the "oh she's all grown up" fantasy only exists in males, you're just naive.

      Well, from the very beginning it was either gonna be Ben as the main character, or Anakin as the main character, or both. So what you don't get it is why they picked one of the three obvious options? Okay.
      The only thing that's worth wondering about is why both started out as sidekicks in the first movie - had they been proper supporting characters there are ways in which this would've make sense, but this way, not that much.

      Yoda and Obi-Wan -- ESPECIALLY Obi-Wan -- can just as easily be seen as the true villians of the Prequel Trilogy. Anakin Skywalker never caught a fucking break. Yoda, Mace Windu, and Kenobi just shat all over him. Kenobi is RESPONSIBLE for Darth Vader's existence. He left his old "friend" and Padawan to slowly burn to death on a pile of hot coals? What, no mercy killing? That's hideous. Sadistic. Evil.
      After digesting this PT for a few years, I can see myself choosing to be a Sith rather than a Jedi. Not that I'm into murdering kids, mind you. But the lines were so blurred by Episode III, I honestly felt for Anakin, bad dialogue and all.

    I remember being so confused watching this movie in the theater. I think I was 15 at the time so it's not like I had a great critical eye at the time, but I had SO much trouble figuring it out. I felt miffed at how much the chase scene ripped off 5th Element. I thought Anakin spoke with a strange accent I couldn't pin down. I was baffled how someone as omniscient and wise as Yoda could be unaware of a clone army, let alone his obliviousness to this old Jedi Master who made the order. You're 900 years old and have been a Jedi nearly as long. HOW DO NOT KNOW YOUR OWN STAFF?? And they just toss it aside. "Oh, some guy? Hrrmmm derp derp, …naaaaah not worth looking into." What the fuck do these people do with their free time???

    Okay, here's another thing I never understood in this plot hole-ridden shitstorm: Who the hell is "Sifo-Dyas"? Did the Plinkett even mention this in the review? I'm a fan of the Expanded Universe material (comic books, novels, video games, online fan forums) and I still have no idea who Sifo-Dyas was. I used to think he was Qui-Gon for some reason. Viewers shouldn't have to scour the deepest depths of Wookieepedia to find this information. If you're not even going to briefly mention his relevance, then why even bring up a name? Why not just say that a mysterious or unknown Jedi Knight ordered the Clone Army's creation? It's just giving the audience a meaningless name that's never followed up on.
    Why would a Jedi even do that, though? Aren't they supposed to be non-aggressors (I know, the prequels threw that whole concept out the window)? If they're like non-materialistic warrior monks who harmonize with and study an incorporeal energy field, would they not take a vow of monetary poverty? Wouldn't it make more sense for say, a wealthy banker or political ideologue to do it? Like a galactic Mitt Romney. Or, was the Jedi Order actually more like the Knights Templar? What did Sifo-Dyas use for payment? Did he make a ten year down payment? I'm sure those cloning facilities and armaments aren't cheap.
    Sifo-Dyas is talked about like twice as having been "killed almost ten years ago" and then never mentioned again. Not even once. I think his name was thrown in because Lucas realized (as he incoherently stumbled through the script) that he had run into a plot hole the size of Sagittarius A*.

      ***** Yes, yes, YES THANK YOU. This has bothered me for years...YEARS! Who the fuck is this guy who's SO integral to the plot and yet is vaguely mentioned once or twice and them never again! The most damning part of all of this, though is the way the Jedi react to hearing about the clone army and the guy who commissioned it. Yoda is almost 900 years old and yet scratches his head for a second over the clones, and then decides how convenient the army is and uses it in the end without asking any questions. If Yoda knew this Jedi, then there should be some dialogue that indicates this, even giving some sort acknowledge meant that Sifo-Dyas even existed. And if he didn't? THEN SAY SO.

      Instead he shrugs and goes “huh, weird.”

    I actually liked Hayden's performances in II and III. Outside of the romance scenes which were awful, he successfully portrayed an intelligent and sophisticated yet unbearably arrogant and irresponsible man-child with a god complex that desperately needed checking. He had an Eric Harris like arrogance about him that I think was good for the character. The episodes also give a good basic portrayal of the mentality behind genocide, that your superior intellect and morality automatically makes the lives of those below you worthless.
    I think one of the reasons Anakin's character failed to jive with fans was the lack of a good foil. Sure there was Obe but that wasn't a character many people could really relate to. I'm thinking a somewhat younger and lower ranking Jedi ore similar to Luke Skywalker who follows Anakin around as sort of like a side kick but who gets constantly shoved aside and condescended to by Anakin due to his white knight complex and overconfidence in his own mastery of the force, who then takes over Anakin's position when he becomes Darth Vader and becomes Vader's main adversary until the main trilogy. Granted, its a formula that's been done before, but if you look at the history of Star Wars you'll see that it was originally intended to be formulaic without being trite all along.

      Look at the scenes where Hayden doesn't say anything, he just has to emote. You can see some decent acting trying to get through. But then he has to act with lines like "from my point of view, the Jedi are evil." My biggest problem with Episode II Attack of the Clones is that as a sequel to Episode I The Phantom Menace, it didn't develop characters or move any story forward; the protection of Padme Amidala is literally the same subplot as in Phantom Menace. In addition, we knew nothing new about Anakin and Obi-Wan other than they hate each other, the Jedi hate Anakin, and Anakin obviously likes Padme. Hell what was rather underwhelming about Attack of the Clones is we saw the BEGINNING of the Clone Wars, NOT the actual Clone Wars.
    Episode I and II - the establishing stories - are fine, if you cut the fluff of both stories and melded them in one story as THE Episode I (Jar Jar can work if you made his character more like Hiccup from "How to Train Your Dragon"; feel free to ask more details if you find that shocking to hear). Episode III Revenge of the Sith, well it can be left alone albeit with some major and minor tweaks and additions here and there.
    Episode II could've been set during the Clone Wars. We could've seen these following events....
    - Diving deeper into the lore of the Force and the Chosen One prophecy
    - Anakin and Obi-Wan transitioning from apprentice and Master to friends/brothers in arms
    - Anakin and the Jedi Council's philosophical differences
    - The sinister machinations of Dooku and Sidious
    - Anakin's need to do justice and good for the galaxy being used against him

    8:15 The thing that's always confused me about this whole prophesy thing is, so you've got a TON of Jedi, and only a couple Sith. In that scenario, balance would either be wiping out most of the Jedi, or making a ton of Sith. If one person is supposed to "bring balance to the force" then he's either super powerful and will kill all the Jedi, or will recruit and train a bunch of Sith. That will be balance... and both of those prospects are not good for the Jedi, so why do they want to find this one to bring balance again?

    • @Goldarlives

      It would have been nice to have a scene where the Jedi Council discusses their interpretations of the prophecy. Then we could at least understand why they care so much about it. Maybe some write off the prophecy as nonsense. Maybe some think it will lead to a Jedi rule over the Sith. Have the characters have some passionate disagreements with each other. Instead we’re told the prophecy exists and the Jedi have to abide by it, even though it’s unclear what it entails.

    at 9:00, you see the laser rod thingamajig. i was watching the old wrath of khan yesterday and saw it inside the scientists' ship around the planet, too. you can catch a glimpse of it when kirk and the rest first enter the empty station and are trepidly walking around. it'd be in the lower left portion of the screen if you're curious to see it. :)

    Easily the worst of all the star wars movies. It's like Lucas learned nothing from Episode I and actually tried to troll the audience by making it worse.

    If I had to take my pick, it would be Anakin. It is easier to relate to him. Anakin falls in love and avenges his mother (and rightfully so). Obi-wan is emotionless.

      Rick Steck Was it ever mentioned in the movie that it was a VILLAGE. And even so, I doubt I would go all the way to overcome my emotions, when I could just kill the ALIENS. They aren't even humans.

    That whole "brotherly" thing going on between Anakin and Obi-Wan is best portrayed (as far as film and TV go) on The Clone Wars series on Cartoon Network a few years ago. They really did have a sense of brother-ship and care for one another, not like these miserable attempts at communicated a strong friendship

    Because they never explained right about the prophecy, I remember that lots of fans had different interpretations about it. Me for exemple thought that the chosen one was not Anikin, but Luke. Because Luke would bring balance to the Force. And the Balance means the end of the Sith. And then it came Disney saying that the balance means that the Dark Side and the Light Side must co exist 50%-50%. That doesnt mean any fcking sense. Looks like more like tolerance for evil to exist. Thats not balance at all.

    You know what I hate? People who think they will be looked upon as true Star Wars fans if they detest episodes I-III. Everyone hops on the bandwagon and lists Empire Strikes Back as the best one and Episodes 1 or 2 as the worst. Have your own opinion like I do! I like every movie ...some have flaws but I appreciate the movie in general! Each film is 8.5/10-10/10! Now throw your hate at me bandwaggoners with your 'jar jar' crap.

    • @micricsan
      @micricsan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +139

      You know what I hate? People that claim everyone should have their own opinion, but it's clear if it's not the same as theirs they get angry with you - Like You.
      There is no Bandwagon. That implies it's just considered cool to hate something and most people hate these movies because they want to be considered cool or something -
      Wrong.
      People hate these movies because they suck! I remember siting in class in my senior year in high school when episode three came out and listening to everyone going on about how all the prequels were so great and thinking to myself 'Am I the only one who thought they sucked? Oh well.' I hated these movies before you seem to think there was some kind of bandwagon to jump on - or before I knew These reviews even existed. Just like a ton of other people.
      Do you think your some kind of rebel for liking them?! No, you're just some Lucas Bandwagon guy who loves just because you're a fan. Just like any other fanatic fan of anything will do - no matter how badly it sucks they will love it because they have to.
      If you want to like these movies fine. But don't be douche-bag about it. That just makes the people who hate them hate them even more.
      And, I didn't mention any "Jar Jar Crap" .

      ***** Calm down man.
      First of all, I don't control people thumbing me up or down - so taking a swing at me for that isn't exactly fair. (Hell, I didn't even know how many Thumbs up I had until I saw you replied to my comment and pointed it out. I made that comment like a week ago - I hadn't been back here till now.)
      As for being a "Fanboy" one way or the other - not in the slightest. I liked the original trilogy and didn't really care for the prequels. That's as far as I took it.
      As for people having there opinions and what-not - I don't really care if someone likes the prequels or not, more power to them. The only reason I said what I said to Speck_Matrix is because 'he' was being a hypocrite. (Like I, apparently, am) You can't tell people they can have their own opinions and then when their opinions are different from your you get angry and call people names. Or act like a dick about it. So yeah. when he acted self-righteous and pissed, it bothered me. If he had just said he liked the movies and didn't care what anyone else thought - or whatever, I probably wouldn't have even said anything.
      But I apparently tweaked a nerve with you - sorry it bothered you so much.

    The Star Wars Prequels are so perfect in their entirety. The story as Anakin is well thought out and executed, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Plus, Jar Jar was a smart move, since he brought the perfect amount of comic relief to such a tragic story.

    4:36 - It's even more sad that the "60 seconds in the elevator" scene wasn't originally in the script, it was added in the reshoots, hence the stunt beard. That means there was originally nothing all...
