    The first Halloween I saw as a child from beginning to end, the moment Laurie grabbed the fire axe and screamed "Michael," I permanently became a fan of this franchise.

  • @dougdeveloper8850
    @dougdeveloper8850 ปีที่แล้ว +231

    This movie is incredibly underrated. To be honest, I think the scene with Laurie, intentionally locking herself with Michael, and screaming, "MICHAEL!" while carrying an axe was more badass than what we got in Halloween Ends. When the Halloween theme kicked in, I felt tension and, "oh it is on!" and the same time haha

      @TrippingHawk ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I think it's because we get a nice character arc. In 2018 shes overdoing it and preparing to fight from the get go, so it's like "ah cool, shes finally fighting him." but in H20 she's actively avoiding him and hiding so by the end she has to turn everything around and stand up and face him.

    • @TheScottThomas
      @TheScottThomas ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Exactly, her screaming Michael is soooo good. She’s done hiding and running and it’s time to take a stand. My favorite moment in the movie by far.

    • @RobVespa
      @RobVespa ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Low bar. There was nothing bad ass about Halloween Ends. It's the most ambitious of that trilogy and is a bad movie. The first was the most straightforward, yet it managed to drop the ball and set itself on fire. The world wouldn't miss anything without the past 5 Halloween films (and quite a few of the others). The best scenario would be to only have the first - Otherwise, just it and this (H2O).

    The ending scene is oddly emotional for me, after being pinned on a tree, Laurie and Michael have a brief moment of symphaty, he is her brother anyway, then she remembers all of her friends and people he killed back then, if thier hands had clapsed he would probably grab and choke her to death, Michael is a monster in the shape of a man whose sole purpose is to kill many people as possible, after Laurie decapitates him she breaths heavily in relief that evil is finally vanquished. Resurrection sadly took a big shit on this perfect ending

    The reason Michael waits 20 years is explained in H20. He killed Judith Myers when she was 17, he tried to kill Laurie when she was 17, and he’s attempting to kill John now that he’s 17… Is that a contrived reason? Sure! Does it make sense that Michael would just chill for that long or even care about people’s ages? Not at all!

I was probably about 13 and it was just running on TV late at night and my cousins and I watched it in the dark in the basement. My parents never let us watch horror movies but when my cousins would sleep over in the summer, we'd sneak in the basement late at night and try and find horror movies on TV or DVD's my cousins would smuggle in from their friends. I watched H20 for the first time recently and wondered why so many people hate it. I thought Halloween 1, 2, and H20 make a pretty good trilogy. I also have pretty much all the same thoughts as you on why I liked this movie. I haven't seen the new Halloween trilogy, but from the trailer footage I've seen, I appreciate H20 even more with its realistic take on what Laurie's life looks like 20 years later. Helicopter parent trying to protect her son, alcohol problem to help her cope, and trouble trusting people. BUT not letting her past completely stop her from doing good things with her life. I also really like the ending of H20. I felt that her killing Michael the way she did was satisfying and deserved after so many years. But alas, the Halloween franchise is a cash cow, so they never really planned on letting that be the ultimate ending. Retconning everything but the original Halloween is frustrating. Even if most the movies are bad, the whole obsession with what's canon and what isn't has really ruined a lot of things where we could have just been getting a bunch of fun movies.

    After watching the most recent trilogy, my love for this film grew. I think Halloween, Halloween II and H20 are the better trilogy. Sure, the other films have things that I like and or enjoy, but when it comes to the Laurie Strode story, H20 is a fitting ending and my favorite by far. The scene of Michael and Laurie through the door window is iconic and I don't think the rest of the franchise has a moment quite like that.
    Moving forward I think it would be great if you review some horror anthologies, a lot of those have amazing Halloween vibes and fit perfect for October 31st. Amazing special this year Chris, THANK YOU!

Be it characters saying something, characters doing something, a setting, a shot, they make *numerous* call backs to the non-canon movies.

    I find the set up for Laurie in this film much more believable than the one in 2018. I feel like the situation Laurie was in between 2018 and Ends should have flipped because it made absolutely no sense why Laurie would be so paranoid about an event that happened nearly 40 years prior and her actual involvement in was very minor with the actual killer being locked up. Ends had her over the events of the 78’ film + the Trilogy and writing a memoir about it when legit Michael was actually still in the loose after killing like 100 people. H20 was a much more realistic set up with Laurie being somewhat paranoid but still able to have a normal life even though she went through two films with Michael in this universe.

    • @samg7325
      @samg7325 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamie Lee Curtis has said Laurie in 1978 would have received no mental health care after that evening and was sent back to school and told to get on with her life. She was traumatised and received no help. In 2018 she believes Michael is after her and will come for her but as we find out he didn't care and it was just the evil doctor forcing them together. It's mentioned in Ends that she got sober and received help and has now come to terms with the fact Michael was never after her: it was just unfortunate circumstance. She went from believing he was the unstoppable boogeyman in 2018 to "just a man" in Ends.

    The 2018 doesn’t recognize the second for a pretty good reason to be honest, David Gordon Green actually almost kept it canon in his film up until they started writing it when Danny McBride convinced him to drop it, the reason is the twist, Laurie being Michael’s sister, John Carpenter has said that twist was a mistake himself and changed Michael from no motive to someone hunting his bloodline, the takeaway for DDG was that it’s much scarier when it’s random and I agree with that.

    My biggest issue with this movie is how they use a lot of the original Scream soundtrack for the chase sequences. This came out shortly after that series revived the slasher genre, and adding songs from that movie to a Halloween movie made it so apparent that they were trying to replicate Scream’s success. Still enjoy H20, but the original Halloween will always be my favorite. Keep up the great work, Chris!!

    H20 was a great entry in the series. I love that they got Jamie Lee back, the fact that they kept close to the original in terms of story simplicity , and Chris Duran played a good Shape. My only issues are the inconsistencies with the mask and the decision to not let this be the finale. Resurrection should not have happened.

    Definitely love your channel, you do a great job and it feels like a real show cause well it is! soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo..........I know everyone and their mother has done one....but you kinda have to do one also on the new Halloween ends debacle. I think to me where most of the movies fall short is they never really go back to the basic reason the 1st worked so well. the mystery, the face in the window, the shape staring at you across the street ...eerie and dark....Yes we know who he is now but I think they can still make him creepy instead of just a slasher....anyway...always enjoy you! and you are one of the few I listen to LOL :) lets hear it! ....the mood the sad and the yuky :) Cheers Lad!

    Halloween H20 is one of my favorite films in the series. Chris Durand who played Michael Myers in this film was exceptional as the Shape. Jamie Lee Curtis once again is at her best as Laurie Strode! Best kill in the film is when Michael kills Laurie’s boyfriend similar to the nurse in Halloween 2 (1981).

    Listen Chris, as a guy in his 40s, I got back on the basketball court with some college kids...and damn I never felt more slow motion in my life!!!!!! Lol. I agree, he needed to slow down and be a brutal tank. Thanks for the series. Looking forward to the movie. Stay great!!!!

    Chris you have gone above and beyond here. Every single reason I love this movie and consider it my personal ending to the series (Resurrection can just be looked at as a funny brain fart of Moustapha Akkad who had it written into the damn contracts that Michael could never die… 😒) and put it into words perfectly. I cannot stand the new “Trilogy” (Rob Zombie’s films are also fodder, but at least his Halloween 2 had the balls to really go in an insanely different direction) for the very reasons you brought up too. I hated 2018 and vowed to never watch the rest. A vow I partially broke by trying to watch Kills when I knew Ends was coming and I tried to give the whole thing a second chance and I just could not do it. So H20 is where it ends for me. Laurie is just so much better represented by the film and Jamie really tore into it. Josh Hartnett is also very likable. Fun fact, he shot this and The Faculty either simultaneously or back-to-back, but H20 came out first and so it got the Introducing credit for Josh. This video really made my day. Thank you Chris.
    P.S. I am surprised you didn’t mention the treatment of the Marion Chambers Nurse character played by Nancy Stephens (who played her in the first two and also came back for Kills). I think H20 handled her death so much better and also made me truly feel for her as not only did she go down fighting (something Stephens herself appreciated), but she also tried to protect Laurie and it was noted that she took care of Loomis in his old age until he died. That made her death count so much more.

    I think the one thing I might disagree with you a bit is how Michael moves. I mean, yeah, he's not in his 20s anymore, but 41 isn't exactly old for a guy who (suspension of disbelief) seems to have kept in reasonable shape since 1978 (both ignoring and factoring in the movies H20 retcons). The big reason why this doesn't bother me much, however, is if you go back and watch Halloween (1978) Michael moves faster and more deliberately than what most people remember. Yes, he walks when he could run, but when he walks across the street to a screaming Laurie trying to get into her house, he's walking pretty fast, whereas other Halloween films (including II from '81) he really, really moves slow. When Michael knocks Laurie off the staircase in '78, he looks over the railing and practically runs down the steps. When she's in her house telling the kids to hide and Michael winds up behind them and starts to chase them, he's walking, but it's pretty deliberate and aggressive. It isn't a zombie walk. I could forgive Michael walking slower in Halloween 4 because the guy just came out of a coma, but in H20, with that being retconned, it doesn't surprise me that Michael would be back to moving more like a motivated, flesh and blood killer.

    I think I've re-watched this one more than any other movie in the series, it just seems to have a very nice flow all the way to the end. And I love what they did to Curtis' character; it feels like a realistic development to such a surreal but brutally real incident as the one depicted in the first two films. She is supposed to be a normal woman caught in an absurdly awful situation; of course she would be afraid - paranoid even - and develop anxiety, some sort of self-destructive habit for comfort, and be a handful of misery and rage for anyone close to her. And of course she would, at least partly, understand it, but be almost unable to do anything about it, however much it ruined her life or hurt the people that she cares for.
    At the same time this movie has some of the goofiest scenes I've ever seen in a movie in general. The opening scene where the nurse sends a child in her house where a burglar may still be is so stupid, as well as everything that happens after, including how the neighborhood suddenly becomes seemingly abandoned, and the police take so much - and just the right amount of time - to arrive. The fact that papers regarding Laurie's fate are just in an office, not secured or hidden much just adds to the hilarity of it all.
    And the slaughter-fest in the end is kind of tame. Two kills not on camera, Will dispatched very quickly - after one of the worst excuses for a "mistake" one could make, Ronald pretty much doing nothing when stuff starts happening, and the way the whole thing seemed to take place in the same 3-4 rooms plus a hallway.
    All that being said I still prefer it to the over-written and produced 2018 version - as much as I loved the violence there, and that movie's Laurie "Rambo" Strode.

    I've always thought that, at least dramatically speaking, H20 was a perfect ending to the series. Laurie stopped running, fought back, and ended Michael for good. I agree with Chris on Resurrection. Hard to believe that even happened.

    I love this movie, it's my favorite after the original. I totally agree about the mask though, I found this video cause I was actually wondering if anyone had used a face swap or deep fake to give him the 1978 mask in any scenes lol. That would be sweet, someone just go through and make a version of this film with Michael wearing the 78 mask in all his scenes :)

    We just rewatched this film this year again, and absolutely loved it. I preferred this Laurie to the one in the new film. This is a strong woman, who has her issues but doesn’t completely collapse because of what happened to her 30+ years ago. Very enjoyable. Way more than the new ones imho. Thanks for the review!

  • @BetterWithBob
    @BetterWithBob ปีที่แล้ว

    It's brief but the film actually does offer an explanation as to why now. Laurie has a realization that he killed Judith when she was 17, didn't come after her until she was 17 and now that John has turned that age...it's never said why but I think it's a good compromise between offering a reason and not outright explaining everything like people didn't like in the sequels.
    Anyway H20 is my favourite of the sequels, and I prefer its characterization of Laurie to the 2018 film. She had more growth, more struggles and way more going on than this one-dimensional crazy survivalist. I just never thought the 2018 film was more than 'fine', but I think H20 is a legitimately good movie. The call backs and role reversals, and bringing back Marion Chambers and giving Janet Leigh a cameo...it felt like a proper reunion and finale to salute the franchise. But I agree that it's a bit too short, and I would have liked the Michelle Williams character to get a little more development. They're all very minor gripes compared to my ones with the 2018 film though. Glad to see H20 getting more recognition.

    What I like about the H20 timeline is that you get to play around with in your head is what Michael Myers has been doing for 20 years until he found where his sister was. I like to believe that he was stalking and killing other innocent people during that time and that he was wearing different masks and costumes as well. Also showing how evil he is because he'll go after other people too than just family. I think that's what they were trying to hint at in all the newspapers in the opening sequence. I think there's also comics based on that too. Non-canon though.
