Good afternoon sir. I bought a tote full of reels on Offer Up a couple of months ago. After I found your videos I thought I would give it a try. Little did I know that I waz going to LOVE it!!! I just finished servicing my Daiwa 4000C. The difference is that mine was FILTHY on the inside with excessive grease. I took my time and cleaned everything. Now it is perfect! Thank you so much for these videos sir. I am going to service all of my reels with my newly found confidence. Thanks again!!!
I checked and I have 21 Silver Series Daiwas now. A year ago I was bemoaning the fact that I only needed a 9000C to have a complete set. I got my third 9000C on Sunday. I used to have three u000C but traded one for a Luxor Seven Seas Saumon Mer reel. I will eventually get another 7000C but that will be about it for these reels. I have fished with all but 5 of my Daiwa Silvers but I’ll get to all of them eventually. I get really ticked when I buy a vintage reel and the drag is completely tight. It is a pet-peeve of mine for sure. I have grown to love the distinctive click of a Daiwa Silver Series reel! It is music to my ears.
I've had my dad's reel in the shed for years. And I finally pulled it apart to clean it it was locked like you couldn't spin it. Turns out the anti reverse shaft was backwards and the spring was catching on it this video saved a classis reel and now I'm off to use it salmon season in South Australia.
Thank you so much for this video. I’ve had this fishing reel since I was a teenager, almost 40 years with me. Hadn’t used it in ages and decided to put it back to work, apparently it’s the first time it’s been opened up and everything was caked in, but your video really helped, thanks again. She’s like brand new again.
Since getting and servicing a 4000C I’ve added a 2500C and 1300C to my collection. I’m going to replace the bearings in all of them and see if I can get them as smooth as possible. I love these reels as you know. Looking forward to your video on a 1300C. As always this is a great reference video in your library!!!
My first surf/pier reel and probably one of the best reels ever made! I have at least a dozen in my collection and several that still get used on the OBX
Hi Dennis, Just got one of these. I have a 7000C Silver that I really like. The 7000 was the first surf fishing reel I ever had back in the 70s. Got an excellent price on a 4000 so I got it. I know the 7000 has three bearings. You helped me get the spool off of the 7000 once and did a video on it. These Daiwa Silver Series reels are very fine reels. I tend to move the bail manually when I fish these reels rather than use the hammer function. I’m hoping this 4000 I bought will be as nice inside as it is cosmetically. Very instructive video. It kind of reminds me of the old Penn 104 but the Daiwa is a better reel.
I'll take the Daiwa Silver series over the Penn Silvers every day. Yes - there are 3 bearings in the Daiwa versus the one in the Penn. Both are well engineered. I just find that the Daiwa reels in this series are smoother.
You just make my day! I was surprised to see the 4000c on this video. I bought a pair of the 4000c from an older gentleman who sold them to me and this is what he said..."this is a matching pair of Daiwa's vintage 4000C. they both have new 60lb braided line. they've both been totally taken apart, cleaned and new grease. also, main shaft bearing on both of these were upgraded with a modern 9x20x6mm ceramic bearing. (if you own one of these reels in rough shape, get this $12 bearing by Acer Racing) these 2 reels will sell for what others go for individually. i haven't time to list individually, or make every last dollar. good luck."
nirknass you are a lucky man. Getiing two of these with all that already done was great. I have one and I put a BocaBearing sealed ceramic bearing in mine and wow what a difference. I’m interested in where the bearings in your reels came from.. the Boca cost a lot more. I have five Silver Series Daiwa and would replace the bearings in all of them if they didn’t cost so much. These reels weren’t designed for braid so be careful. If I put braid on a vintage reel I put on mono first and connect braid with a double uni knot. It really is better for the reel. Glad to read your comment. I am a serious fan of Dennis. I restore and collect vintage surf spinning reels as a retirement hobby.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. The entire process is so beautifully demonstrated that now I can confidently service my similar reel
I received one of these yesterday. Looks Pristine and very well maintained! Like New! Couldn't be happier, especially with the price of New Rave reels! Just give me a bulletproof, reliable workhorse and viola.... Here I am! Thanks for the tour! Might you be able to recommend where to find the Spec's on these? Thanks again!
Hi Dennis- I wanted to reach out and say thank you for your videos. I thourghly enjoyed watching your videos. You explanations are clear and two the point. The first one I was just yesterday. I looked up how to fix a bail that does not return all the way and followed along another one of your videos that addressed a bent bail. I was able to correct the problem I had on my reel. Then I pulled a Diawa 600X that I have and went to clean it up for a rod and noticed the bail did not trip and the handle did not turn freely. Today I looked on your page to see if you had any Diawa repair videos. I found this video and another regarding the bail spring. The 600X is similar to the reel 4000 but smaller and does not have the red bail trip but a lever on the other side of the bail. Anyway I disassembled my reel and cleaned it really well. I found varnish thick and very hard chips which I think were just hardened grease in the gears. No broken teeth or metal shavings. The spring was out of the bail. I lubed it with reel oil for the time being while I order some blue grease. It works like new. The handle and spool spin like a top and the bail trips again. It is a little tight once in a while but 100% improvement. I may have a new rainy day hobby . Thank you for taking the time to offer a variety of videos with various models. Al
nice job Dennis, I just acquired one from my Dad who never really used that was given to him 25 years ago. I am going to buy a new 5000 reel for surf casting but use this as back up after I Lub eit up.
Excellent video , I have 2 of these reels and owned them from new , but they haven’t been used in years , so maybe I should give them a service now I know how to , thanks again ,
Hi Dennis, I put a ceramic sealed bearing on my 4000C since it needed replacing anyway. That bearing is incredibly smooth and can be slightly oiled or not at all. Anyway it made my 4000C the sbsolute smoothest of my Daiwa Silver Series. My others are great so I don’t intend to get ceramic bearings for all of them - way too expensive! I did put the HT100 drag washers on mine though. Your tip on how to remove the rotor that was stuck on my 7000C will always be appreciated! Love this video! --Chris (interesting that the drag washers on the Ryobi SX4N Silver Cloud reel I just got had no clip holding the drag washers. Unusual design as they still won’t fall out)
2nd Chance Tackle Go to bocabearings.com. They have a sheet you can print out that will tell you exactly what bearing to order. Just put the on bearing on the sheet and find the correct size. They have a helpful chat line on their website as well.
The spring goes under the claw and the hook, which is pointing up slips to the outside of the dog to put pressure on the neck and force the dog inward. I will check to see if I have one in the shop and do a quick video for you if I can find one to work on. Thanks for asking - Dennis
Barry - I just found a 4000c and did a video on how to set the claw. It is currently uploading. You can watch it here th-cam.com/video/p3TQC7q5eiE/w-d-xo.html Thanks for asking - Dennis
Informative video. I have a SS5000 reel and wondered if it's similar to that 4000c? I want to clean up the drag washers, as I figure the washers will be stuck. I haven't used it since I bought it new back in the 70's & had a custom 10.5ft. surf rod built for it. I have to get out more!!!
Yes. This is almost always a case where the plastic shim(s) on the spool shaft are worn or missing. The shims are adjusters that even out the line on the spool. They sit on top of the tooth ratchet that clicks when the drag is in use. There are usually two shims on top of the metal ratchet. If you are spooling high. you need to add one or two. Spooling on the bottom, should subtract one or two. The second possibility is that the bail wire or arm is bent at the roller. That may cause the line to ride up when cranking. In that case, you would need to replace the bail and roller and maybe the bail arm if it is damaged. - Thanks for asking - Dennis
this was my exact problem as well with my 7000c, and i just made 2 shims out of a yogurt lid, and spooled perfectly! thanks for your doctor, my fishues are cured..........for now!
Dennis, you are so fortunate to have such good vision. With my limitations I use a bunch of magnifiers and special lights, etc. You seem to see everything so easily. I had such a time with that little key on the pinion of a Mitchell 402 I was restoring. Took 4 tries to get the rotor back on properly and I still managed to drop it three times. Put a new pinion in so those little C clamps were also a pain. The 4000C I bought will arrive Thursday so I’ll break it down and see what it needs, Do you have a good source for parts for these old Daiwa reels like this on? I have four of them but the only thing I’ve ever replaced were bearings. Love these reels!
The 7000C has a ball bearing on the shaft of the main gear doesn’t it? I could not remove the rotor on my 7000C. The rotor was fine and the bearing was oiled and the whole thing was rotating freely so I didn’t force it. I believe the handle on my 7000C has bearings on both sides. If I’m correct. The 7000C has 3 bearings and the 4000C has one. Am I correct? Thank you for these helpful videos. I don’t know what I would do w/o them.
Hi Dennis. I know this is an old video, but it was the first one up on this reel. I popped in to see a friend, literally ten minutes ago, and totally unrelated to fishing, and she said she'd found a discarded reel, and did I want it? Well, of course I did, because it's a fishing reel, and it was for free. It's in pretty good condition, except the the handle is broke off towards the bend, which I'm thinking either something similar might fit, or I could simply file off the broken end, drill a new hole, and fix a new knob in there, from something I've got hanging around. Also, the anti-reverse seems to need a bit of attention as, it works, but needs to be switched right home, if you know what I mean. Having learnt so much from you over the last few years I feel confident enough to be able to fix the anti-reverse, but what are you thoughts on the handle? I don't really want to buy one, so improvisation is my preferred route. Any suggestions. Thanks a million. Raymondo.
There should be a pin that joins the handle to the shaft. If you knock out the pin, you can install a new handle arm, if you can find one. I do not have one, check eBay or other sites for a used one - Dennis
Thanks Dennis. The anti-revers issue was resolved using your recommended method of a few squirts of WD40. Old grease was the issue, I wouldn't have known that without your tutorials, so thank you. It so happend that I have a budget reel that had the same handle spec, so I simply replaced the Daiwa handle with it, and now have a much better reel which cost me nothing. A while ago, I wouldn't have had the knowledge, and confidence to attempt tampering with such seemingly pro-only endeavours. Now I can, and do. Thank you so much Dennis. You are an invaluable resource to those of us who love to learn how the tools we use to catch fish actually work, and how fix them when they go wrong. Take care, Old Sport. Raymondo. UK.
Hi Dennis You have an amazing channel. Viewers really appreciate the time and effort you put into this. My question about G4000 and how it is well made compared to the silver series. There is limited information about it G2600/G4000 however schematic is available online. It has graphite body with 3 ball bearings. Kindly advise. Thanks.
I prefer the comparable 4000C in the silver series to the G4000. There are two different internal designed. The Silver series uses a crosswind gear and block that drives the axle shaft up and down. The G4000 uses a design similar to the Daiwa RS series. That uses a crosswind arm and pin to hold the axle and it is driven by the main gear. I also like the metal versus the early and bulky graphite bodies. Having said that, both designs are solid and will last a long time when they are properly maintained Thanks for asking Dennis
I agree. One of my absolute favorites, despite the LOUD anti reverse dog click. Apparently it bothers other folks when I am reeling in the catch. Too bad! Thanks for watching - Dennis
Those are no longer available new, so check Ebay, Craigs list or other used equipment sites for either a parts reel or the handle itself. Thanks for asking - Dennis
Thank you for the video. I was able to break down my 4000c, clean, and lube it. It had been packed away for many years, so it was in bad shape. I do have one question though. After reassembling the reel, the handle will not stay locked in the open position. It wants to loosen, and fold up, like you would when storing the reel. I don't recall this being an issue before I disassembled the reel, so I'm wondering if I did something wrong. The only thing I did differently on reassembly was to switch if from right to left hand retrieve. Do you have any ideas about how to fix this problem? Thanks! Dave
My quick thought is that you have not reset the collar nut to tighten the handle shaft. The collar nut is on the handle between the elbow and the shaft. If you turn this counterclockwise, it should work it's way towards the handle side and lock out the folding feature. If this does not work, try turning the collar the other way - clockwise. Last, make sure the attaching screw opposite the handle side plate is fully tightened. Let me know if these thoughts do not fix your problem and I will try to replicate it on one of mine. Thanks for asking - Dennis
Hi Dennis. I tightened the attaching screw as much as I could without risk of over-tightening it, and then tightened the collar nut as much as I could by hand. At this point everything looked fine, but after a few turns of the handle, the collar nut loosened, and the handle began to fold up. I tried this a few times, with the same result each time. Please let m know if you have any other ideas. Thanks, Dave
Great video on the 4000c but I didn't see any info on to reset the bail spring on the 4000c ? I can't seem to find anybody that shows this . I have mine apart and can't seem to get it back together....
Hang on Gary. I have a 7000 and will do the video for you today. I believe that they are the same. Most of the videos that I do are how to service the reel for a tune up. They focus on gearing, bearings and other internal parts. If the bail trip arm is working, no service is required there. - Dennis
Gary - I did the video and it is currently uploading. It should be online soon. It will be available at th-cam.com/video/x7mwrlN2xd0/w-d-xo.html once the uploading process completes - Dennis
Hello Dennis, I have several 7000C models for surf fishing. Love these reels, however I wondered if there is a way to silence them as the new reels are today. By that I mean the clicking sound during retrieve.
Hello sir I just purchased a brand new daiwa 4000c silver series has never Ben mounted on a rod, from a old timer, can u please tell me what’s the difference between the silver series and the black and gold series ?
Check eBay. I think most to the Daiwa's of the era share the screw. I don't know if I have any in the shop. I will see if I can find one around if I can locate an AG model - Dennis
Thank you for the video. I have a 1300C I cleaned up using your directions. One question though. When I took mine apart the spool shaft had quite a bit of old grease on it which I wiped off. I assume this just came from the worm gear? The grease in my reel was quite old and dried.
It is like this is not the original grease, so hard to tell. Even if it was, the grease would normally be applied to several spots - bushing, main gear, axle shaft and worm gear, and then spread to all parts under use. I recommend annual service for normal use reels and that keeps the grease from drying out. - Dennis
Good day sir. I have daiwa sportline 1000. I dis-assimble the gear in the anti reverse but there is one sprint that i forgot where is the exact location and my anti reverse is not functioning... Need help.
Neil - I just did trhe video using a 4000c to show where the spings are and how to reload them. Watch it here th-cam.com/video/1PJThzcmWtg/w-d-xo.html Thanks for asking - Dennis
I do not have that reel in my shop at the moment. I will add your request to my list and do a video when one comes in for service - Thanks for asking - Dennis
That's a good deal! To start with, just take the side plate off and spray the internals with a liberal shot of WD40. Don't be afraid of too much, you can drain off the excess later. Make sure to turn the reel upside down as well, so you can get some on the pinion gear and the top bearing assembly. Then take a break. Let it sit while you get a cup of coffee or beverage of your choice ( 10 minutes or so). When you come back, the reel should turn freely. You can then follow the video if you want to rebuild and re oil the reel - Best wishes - Dennis
Hello Dennis, congratulations for your channel and the wonderful posts. I have a Daiwa 4000C reel, but I lost the drag knob and I can't find it here in Brazil. Do you have it in your stock?
Love these older reels. I just did a Shimano AXUL-S and will post a video on it this week. The Japanese Ultra lites from this era are nice reels. Thanks for watching - Dennis

It is similar, but it is closer to the Black Gold series than the silver series reel. Overall that is a nice reel and will treat you well - Dennis
Hi Dennis, the drag pressure should always be backed off when the reel is not being used, especially over long periods.
Absolutely right on. Especially on the conventional and bait casters - Thanks for watching - Dennis
Great video, very informative and helpful.
Thank you for watching. Best wishes - Dennis
Hey Dennis love watching your videos

The 7000C has 3 bearings and the 4000C has one. Am I correct? Thank you for these helpful videos. I don’t know what I would do w/o them.
Yes, the 7000C is a 3 bearing reel. The main pinion gear and the two sides of the main gear how the individual bearings.
4000c has two bearings, should state this on the side plate badge.
Hi Dennis. I know this is an old video, but it was the first one up on this reel.
Raymondo. UK.
great video , thank you , I have found another 4000c but the handle is missing ! Do you know if that handle is available , if so where ?
That handle is no longer available - Check Ebay for a used one - Dennis

Hi Dennis
You have an amazing channel.
Having said that, both designs are solid and will last a long time when they are properly maintained
Thanks for asking
Dennis
A damn fine reel. My fav.
I agree. One of my absolute favorites, despite the LOUD anti reverse dog click. Apparently it bothers other folks when I am reeling in the catch. Too bad! Thanks for watching - Dennis
Hi Dennis,
Love your vids. I have just broke the handle of my Diawa 4000, while tripping on a rock. Do you know where I can find another?
Thanks, Bob
Those are no longer available new, so check Ebay, Craigs list or other used equipment sites for either a parts reel or the handle itself. Thanks for asking - Dennis
Thank you for getting back to me.
Thanks,
Dave
The click noise is the anti-reverse set up. The only way to silence them is to use the over-ride or remove the anti-reverse - Dennis
Hello sir I just purchased a brand new daiwa 4000c silver series has never Ben mounted on a rod, from a old timer, can u please tell me what’s the difference between the silver series and the black and gold series ?
The silver and gold series predated the Black and Gold. There were some refinements in the later versions, but they were not that different
@@2ndChanceTackle thank you
I have a Daiwa AG4000X, I have lost the handle screw. Any idea where I can get a replacement screw or an alternative screw?
Can you show the Daiwa Laguna 5000 parts greasing?
I do not have that reel in my shop at the moment. I will add your request to my list and do a video when one comes in for service - Thanks for asking - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle thanks. I got it working
Do u have a video on the 7300 is it the same ?
Similar but not the same. Watch this one on the 7500

Hello. Will this reel je possible To substitue to ht100 washers? Merci
I'm not sure. You should check an online source for Carbonex drags and ask the experts - Dennis
Just bought an old one on an old 7' Pole for $5 it's gummy feeling when you crank it. Need to clean and regrease.
@@2ndChanceTackle OK. And I need grease right? Yes a great deal!

Hello Dennis, congratulations for your channel and the wonderful posts. I have a Daiwa 4000C reel, but I lost the drag knob and I can't find it here in Brazil. Do you have it in your stock?
Thank you
You're welcome
I had a 500 ultra lite version
Love these older reels. I just did a Shimano AXUL-S and will post a video on it this week. The Japanese Ultra lites from this era are nice reels. Thanks for watching - Dennis
