I marched Madison Drumline in 88 (tenors) and I'm humble enough to give a big ass shout out to The Cadets( Garfield)'s drumline. They killed it!!! Much respect to them from " The corps if brothers" Madison Scouts- We Never Walk Alone.....
You guys came to Amsterdam that year. I was with Concord drum n bugle corp back then. You guys were so cool. I remember "Ziggy" He was so cool. I went on to do be a drummer playing for Britney, Nick JOnas, Boy George and others. When I saw the show, I knew you would win that year. We all said it and that was us LOVING BD!!!!
You guys killed it also!!! Don’t sell yourself short. 88 was an incredible year and turning point for Drum Corps. And you were part of it. Plus you were World Champs that year. You guys were the best of the best. Congrats
Everyone comparing this to 88 Scouts, remember the context. This wasn’t the Cadets’ closer that year. It was their fun middle number. So yeah, no wonder it’s not as good or intense as 88 Scouts. It’s still a banger. :)
Also 88 Scouts was really REALLY close to the Stan Kenton big band arrangement. And that old chart kicks ass, so of course the show was great. This cadets show is a disconnected highlight reel of that classic chart.
I remember being at this performance. I remember the crowd going crazy throughout the entire performance, and each time the crowd got crazy it got louder and louder. The Corps that year was genius. I marched with s s the v back in the 70s. Its so funny how so much has changed since then. The whole Corps is now in movement almost a hundred percent of the time. Back in the old days it was unheard of.
There is no better version than the Madison scouts. This trumpet trio can’t compete with the Scout trio. That show was insanely awesome. Madison will always have a special place in my heart. They knew how to put on a show.
SUCH an awesome song..... always. Cadets..... KILLIN IT!!!! Love this one. Yeah, love the Scouts '88 too. But hell, love that BLAST! version, too. I dunno. Enjoy music. Don't pick it apart too much..... some stuff is just meant to be loved.
talk about SPICY!! The Cadets version had it ALL! This arrangement brought all the elements of a blockbuster Hollywood movie and then some! It had a subtle/smooth beginning, an intense climax, and a fantastic finish that left the audience breathless and wanting more!! Can't wait to see who tries to top this version of Malaguena. :) - to quote Christopher Walken "aka Bruce Dickenson" from SNL --> "..I've gotta fever, and the only prescription, is more cowbell!" - The Kid, Cadets '79 - '84, snare drummer.
Im a trumpet guy, but my absolute favorite part of this is the snare licks on this mvmt. I’ve no doubt the movement across the 50 was well rehearsed. I don’t know drums well, but the movement combined with the clean triplets around 3:00 is just awesome.
Overall...the Scout's version was more electrifying....Brass was OFF THE CHARTS in KC that year....I think I prefer the Percussion arrangement from this version (The Cadets). WAY MORE tasty. Great writing and great execution. Will always love the piece never the less.
It's very sad that this iconic drum corps isn't competing anymore,I marched in the late 70's and was teaching Bostonn in the 80s. Unfortionly the cadets were brought down by an adult who made bad decisions with members of the corps who trusted in hm.the lawsuites were too much to overcome. We almost lost our corps because of an adult's actions in 1982 but we were able to keep our corps alive with 54 members in 1983, now the boston crusaders are among the top 4 corps. I am hoping for a return of the cadets in some form for the kids who deserved much better.😢😂🎉
While not trying to diminish how well the Cadets played this or how good the players are, the Scouts utterly destroy the song, while the Cadets just play it pretty well. Plus the rendition of the song loses parts of what made it so amazing for the Scouts. It's a nice tribute but not nearly the same level. Although this is just my opinion, and this is the internet so people will probably flame me for it.
You should appreciate a little bit of both... Madison has my preferred key, tempo, emotion, trumpet seniority. Cadets have the demand, precision, ensemble balance and sound, variety (they had a few different styles mixed in to show off their dexterity) drill cleanliness and writing. I think one can love the Madison Version but agree that the Cadet version will always score better.
Im going down a rabbit hole of Malaguena here. This evening, with my little guy, I have put time in on the 1980, 88, 96 Scouts and now the 03 Cadets. Power... 88 Scouts. Electricity... 88 Scouts Tasty percussion... 03 Cadets. Precision, its a hard sell between 96 Scouts and 03 Cadets.
I've always been a fan of Cavies M&M. Madison's always been a powerhouse brass section and I love their sound. I enjoy both for different reasons - though I like Madison a pinch more than Cavies. Devils have fallen in my estimation. I prefer their old Stan Kenton charts. Ultimately DCI is great entertainment with all the members putting forth their best effort. Good luck this year, and have fun. I'll have to check out the Lynn, MA. Manning Bowl show to see who's competing this year ~July 2nd.
@Teder95 Because most kids own a trombone and it's an instrument you can transfer from marching band to marching band. a band director wont purchase 40 marching baritones just to use for the marching band, when he could buy 40 trombones that can be used for everything. pretty sure this isn't the only reason but it's a big reason why.
In 2003, Cadets did this better on an overall basis. But I dare anyone to tell me that the intro Boston did in 2003 wasn't just as intense, if not more so, at the start.
Nobody was going to beat them in drums that year. They had no equal.
I marched Madison Drumline in 88 (tenors) and I'm humble enough to give a big ass shout out to The Cadets( Garfield)'s drumline. They killed it!!! Much respect to them from " The corps if brothers" Madison Scouts- We Never Walk Alone.....
Do you think stepping off on the right foot is better than stepping off on the left?
Sheldon Allen their drumlne did well I agree

gotta admit the pit was killing it on this song

yes, I particularly love this movement for the general timbre, drill, anyway, I love it.
Michael says it the same way
Also 88 Scouts was really REALLY close to the Stan Kenton big band arrangement. And that old chart kicks ass, so of course the show was great. This cadets show is a disconnected highlight reel of that classic chart.
@@lietz13yep, damn near a Bill Holman copy.

2:00 it's why you're here.
You just made my life so much easier. Thank you.
aenyxx .
If he could, he would
I somewhat agree. I think 3:23 is really why you're here ;-)
Without a doubt. In 2019
Probably one of the most fun songs to march to. :) I miss being in a marching band.
2003 continues to be my favorite DCI year. Not a stinker among all shows to hit the field that year.
There is no better version than the Madison scouts. This trumpet trio can’t compete with the Scout trio. That show was insanely awesome. Madison will always have a special place in my heart. They knew how to put on a show.
Boo Yeah!

im gonna miss the cadets, they were one hell of a corps
BRO THIS IS FIYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Scouts had power and electricity, Cadets had flare and precision (especially percussion and pit)
@@meuzikman0181 relax.
Josh Hahn oh ok. Yeah I’m not a drum corps fan.
Relax.
Josh Hahn hey.
Relax
@@EanGoreham lol he got u bro. Career ended
Ean Goreham when a Cadet gets called not a corps fan lol
Played a version like this, even did the snare break in 12/8. Probably my favorite show I've played!

I also find it impassionate my friend
oh them cowbells. never realized how much I love them till later in life (now.)
OMG that D Line section was killer this year!!! Very clean and powerful
Gotta come back to this video every now and then. HEAT!
Cadets, killing the visuals as usual! I'm loving you guys!! Huge Shout out to the percussion visuals
Overall...the Scout's version was more electrifying....Brass was OFF THE CHARTS in KC that year....I think I prefer the Percussion arrangement from this version (The Cadets). WAY MORE tasty. Great writing and great execution. Will always love the piece never the less.
My all-time favorite DCI show, hands down
same
Jeez the tenor player pointing at the judge after their feature was badass
This is what Marching band and drum corps is about for me
Nobody has or ever will do this song better than the Madison Scouts, bar-none.
Blast! version was better than 88 madison scouts version
Don't get me wrong I love this version of Malaguena but I like how the Scouts played it in 1988 more.
An on-field adaptation of the Blast! version..... i'm loving it
Absolutely
I marched Madison 74-76. We messed around with it. Always was a great tune.
The balls of that guy to hang his high note over. So fucking awesome.
JOHN MOLLOY
+Quyen Dang JAHN MOBEY
i thought john molloy marched magic 03. and also had his name yelled during a silent moment at the end of BD 03. hahah
@@tp24072 Best time of my life. Glad you enjoyed it! 😃😇🎺❤️👍
@@tp24072❤🎺
I can appreciate this version but for me 1988 Madison Scouts is the Standard for this chart.......
What about ‘80 Scouts?
‘88 or ‘96 Scouts is almost a toss up for me. Both are superior to this version.
Chris Wire yep. Those are THE years!
‘80 Scouts is my favorite
Madison's is excellent but I believe The Cadets rendition is equally superb.
Drum line is having too much fun at 2:12
First time I have really seen the Cadets really cut lose and I've followed them since the Garfield days. Killer!!
Best summer experience of my life 😊
J J what did you play/spin?
One of my favorite performances by the Cadets. 👏👏👏👏
Wow brings back fond memories, because I was there; the world championships were held on the campus of UCF in Orlando FL.
Damn,,, I forgot about the Cadets Drumline this year. Shame on me. Freakin Bravo!!!!!

This is right up there with Rite of Spring for best musical performance ever
Absolutely MARVELOUS ! !
An arrangement based on the arrangement used in "Blast!"
Hawthorne Caballeros and Muchachos did this to perfection back in the 70s - Their signature stuff!! But this is balls to the wall Cadets!!
Michael McCartney, Jr. the whole cabs show was centered around it this year, being the 70th anniversary
Very good! Just not the same without that extraordinary baritone solo with all the pitch bending
I love this version. I feel that 2Cellos took this vibe and made their Thunderstruck video for the world to enjoy.
Point at the judge after the quad solo. HELL YESSS

Hot damn drumline! Those are some nice clean beats!

I like this show better than the Cavie's spin cycle that year... The BD show was pretty nuts tho.
So much respect.
POWER!!!!!
one of the soloist from this show I met him yesterday ^.^
The Cadets are one of my favorite corps, possibly my favorite but was technically wonderful. It lacked the felling!
wooowwww i love this ,....very good marching
'88 Scouts Malaguena...cannot and will not be matched for the rest of history =]
I honestly love The Cadets playing this but When northwestern State demon band played this song it sent shivers down my spine.
Very good indeed . Great job
Second best ever played
who is the first?
88 Madison
3:48 has been my ringtone for the past 8 years
you should find some way to tell rick brown that
The cadets are bad ass!!
This may be better than Kenton's version
Very nice rendition of what the Cabs have been doing for centuries
Now that's a party!
Cadets great on the chart...
SCOUTS REDEFINED THE CHART!
I have been a Madison Scouts fan for over 40 years but this has to be the most exciting version of Malaguena that I have ever heard. Incredible!
One of the last great latin jazz shows. 😊
Holy jeeeeeezus. NICE.
That was fucking crazy.
Excellent mallet work.
Wait for it . . . . MAN, YEAH!
There you go trumpets
Clean.
Anybody notice the tenor that points at the judge. If you did he's obe of the band directors at my school. I'm so lucky!!!
i play trombone AND baritone like a BOSS!
Such a bad ass song, regardless of how you play it.
Greatest thing about music is if you can't see it, you can't tell who's playing :)
what great!verycoo!!
Great but Madison 1988 will never be topped

I love it when the drumline "UHNS" the judge in his face at 2:30 xD
God they make those high notes seem so easy.
2019 🎺👍
2020
I now have a headache
@Teder95 Because most kids own a trombone and it's an instrument you can transfer from marching band to marching band. a band director wont purchase 40 marching baritones just to use for the marching band, when he could buy 40 trombones that can be used for everything. pretty sure this isn't the only reason but it's a big reason why.
even if they played this in 2004 there was no way they would have won over the cavaliers
The SNARES
wow
MEATY drum book!!!
@Marix54888 drum corps only use bell front valved instruments (also why there are no sousaphones)
anyone know where i can find that lead trumpet part??
In 2003, Cadets did this better on an overall basis. But I dare anyone to tell me that the intro Boston did in 2003 wasn't just as intense, if not more so, at the start.
I did like the hot line drill.
@thedypunisher Well I found out very recently that there is such a thing as a bell front marching trombone. 3 valved, no slide
*was. PBS hasn't done a DCI broadcast in like 8 years.
is this madison , this is their piece that i like, cause here in he i'm the one who is the soloist this piece. MALAGUENA!!!!!!
so bad ass
That shit is crazy
