I can never get tired of watching Blast. In the beginning, that's the longest length of time I've heard someone hold a sustained note. As a trumpet player myself, these individuals are an inspiration.
Yeah. 50 seconds of circular breathing. In my hay day I could have come close, but not 50 seconds of it (maybe 25-30 seconds)... now, I'm lucky if I get 10.
We were ALL having a wonderful time! I joined the cast when it came to the US after London as a low brass player, and I can honestly say that every second I was on stage was exhilarating. Those were the days!
I think most people I know would've passed out from being so lightheaded after trying to play those notes in those ranges at that volume...........if only more people could appreciate such talent
I joined the cast when it came to the US as a low brass player, and its not that we WEREN'T playing loudly, all of our horns were mic'ed, so the sound mixer in the back of the house was the real hero there, turning individual mics on and off and up and down constantly. The second we walked off stage, they would turn them off so conversations offstage weren't piped out into the house.
For anyone who's ever tried to play this, the Stan Kenton arrangement of Malaguena, and do it justice, and failed- as everyone has- only then can you truly appreciate the mastery this represents. The top end goal of brass artists everywhere. Timeless!

The great thing is...if you listen to the encore performance which took place about 2 minutes later, the Sops hit a major 3rd (and I think there is one who manages a 5th) above the final tonic chord.
What are you talking about? Madison Scouts been doing this song for decades. They're basically the only corps who really does it since they set he bar so high.

I had almost forgotten about this! I saw this on Broadway in June, 2001, at the old Broadway Theatre next door to the Ed Sullivan Theatre where Dave Letterman did his show. Unimaginable.
