I don't know a single keyboardist that meant more to his band then Ray Manzarek of the Doors. I don't know how a talent like his could be overlooked.

Roger Waters may have given Pink Floyd its direction but NOBODY was more responsible for The Floyd's sound than keyboardist Rick Wright. Forget who's on the writing credits....Wright set the tone for the PF that we know and love.

Totally agree... I think that also applies to Tony Banks and Genesis (I'm referring to the bands' characteristic sound of the pre-poppy years)… even though he may not be the most sympathetic character... somewhat the opposite of Rick Wright.

Tony Banks is the secret weapon of Genesis. Of course Hackett is a guitar master, Peter was a great vocalist and so was Phil in addition to being an excellent drummer, but listen to the keyboard riffs and solos of Tony Banks. He added so much texture and created so many awesome melodies. I'll be damned if the intro of Firth of Fifth, the second half of The Cinema Show and the solo in the Apocalypse in 9/8 section of Supper's Ready are not some of the most awesome moments in their discography. The mellotron intro to Watcher of the Skies and the solo in the middle of In the Cage also come to mind. I could go on, but you get the point

Tom Coster from Santana. He's played on many Santana albums starting with Caravanserai and he co-wrote the all time classic instrumental Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile) amongst other songs. Tom was a huge part of the band during the jazz fusion years and later incarnations of the band. He's also worked with other artists such as Billy Cobham, Joe Satriani, Frank Gambale and Larry Coryell among many others. I find him really underrated.

A bit unoriginal, but my no.1 is Keith Emerson, my introduction to Prog was ELP's first album & Pictures at an Exhibition. Fun Fact : Keith cites Dudley Moore as one of his jazz influences.
Richard Wright-a big part of the Pink Floyd sound.
Tony Banks-a big part of the Genesis sound.
Mark Stanway-a big part of the Magnum sound.
Ray Manzarek- a big part of the Doors sound.
Thijs Van Leer-a big part of the Focus sound.
Manfred Mann-big fan of the Earth Band albums.
John Lord-Master of the Hammond in Heavy Rock.
Vince Crane-main man of Atomic Rooster.
John Paul Jones-No Quarter one of my favourite Zep tracks.
Singer/keyboardists : Steve Winwood, Freddie Mercury, Elton John, Bruce Hornsby, Gregg Rolie.
Clive Nolan-keyboard player in two of my favourite bands of recent years Arena & Pendragon.
    Michal Lapaj-Riverside.

And Rick Wakeman for being Rick Wakeman.

Biggest Omission: Ray Manzarek. I got to know Manzarek in L.A. and he was very involved in preserving and promoting the work and history (legacy) of The Doors -- that's why he didn't like that Oliver Stone biopic at all -- and although he's not on the list I know he'd really appreciate Pete keeping that going on this channel if he were still with us.
Personal Favorites: Great to see Billy Joel on this list, he is The Piano Man after all, and you're right, Pete, about seeing him live. If anyone watches the "Live From Long Island" concert video you'll see him running all over the stage from piano to synthesizer, organ, keyboards on "The Nylon Curtain" tour -- and Billy always cited Winwood as the best. When I saw Billy back in '86 he had Winwood album playing before the show.
Best Keyboard Movie Theme: Vangelis, "Chariots of Fire." Runner-up: "Axel's Theme" from "Beverly Hills Cop" is really cool too!
Best Keyboard TV theme: Jan Hammer, "Miami Vice."
Best Keyboard Hit Song: Herbie Hancock, "Rockit." Winwood's work on songs like "While You See A Chance" is great too, though these are standard pop/rock tunes.
Best Keyboard Cover Tune: Manfred Mann, "Blinded By The Light."
Best Keyboard Concert Moment: For me, when I saw Queen in concert and Freddie played a long random (not recognizable) piano solo transitioning into the opening notes of "Bohemian Rhapsody" with a laugh as the crowd roared!
And since you mentioned a couple piano players (Billy and Elton) I would note the extraordinary work of Roy Bittan "The Professor" on piano and Danny Federici on the organ of The E Street Band. Also, I'd rank Porcaro higher, those guys in Toto were the top studio musicians in the business with their instruments before they formed the band and took off.

and the duo from Supertramp, Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies. For me, Keith Emerson will always be the top of the tree, but I’d not argue against the great Jon Lord! We lost Lord, Emerson and Richard Wright far too early.

Really Good and very interesting list plus Geddy Lee, John Paul Jones, Ian Mcdonald, Robert Fripp apart from guitar, Kevin Minear (big influence on Lord), Hugh Banton and Petet Hammill, Chick Churchill, John Evan, Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson, Simon House & Del Dettmar, David Paisch, Mark Kelly, Ray Manzarek, Kevin Moore (atmosphere and weird soundscapes), John Oliva, Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre, Stomu Yamashta, Richard Barbieri, plus many others that weren't mentioned and i would like to make a very special honourable mention for one guy that he is famous for his huge big voice but not for his piano talent and skills, because people tend to forget how much great he was in piano, composer etc because he was a grandiose voice frontman... It's Freddie Mercury. He was a top notch piano player (even sone hammond) who mixed and merged lots and lots of different music styles together with great sense of melodies like opera, jazz, pop, RnR, cambaret, classical, funky, etc...

You sure covered a lot of my favorites, I was so glad to hear Jurgan Fritz & Triumvirat as I don't feel they really get their dues. I would like to add Keith Jarrett. I think he's amazing. Very a experimental and love the improvisations. I wish I could pick one from Tangerine Dream, but it's hard to decide who does the best. They're so well together, like most I like the Frose, Franke, Bauman line up. I give Mike Oldfield an honorable mention too. The way he composes for his own keyboards is (not to mention guitars etc), is wonderfully creative a d texture laiden.

I know that there are limitations in the numbers of guys to be highlighted, but, I am a little older, and have great affection for some of the early Keyboardists in Prog and Rock. Mike Pinder, for the Moody Blues, a mellotron pioneer, was instrumental in promoting the instrument, and key for the MB's sound in the "core 7" albums. Ray Manzarek, was the glue that held the Doors together, as they had to follow they ebbs and lurches of Morrison's delivery. Stevie Wonder could lay down some funky grooves. And Alan Price was key to the early British Invasion Blues sound of the Animals.
But, thanks for your list, Pete, it was interesting.

    1. Art Tatum, one pianist to rule them all. No one else comes close.
    2. Vladimir Horowitz- His televised 1986 Moscow performance said it all. I still tear up just thinking about it. His receipt of the Presidential Medal of Freedom sealed it. He also stated that Art Tatum was his favorite pianist. After that performance, at my next piano lesson in college, I tried to emulate Horwitz's "bad" technique. When my teacher corrected me, I sited Horowitz. She replied you're no Horowitz, get those wrists up.
    3. Malcolm Frager- He could make a piano sound more than just a contraption. He was the master of the Beethoven Concerti. He soloed with my orchestra many times and it was always immensely fun in the rehearsals and the performances were thrilling.
    4. Patrick Moraz- He had a unique sound. I can always identify him just upon hearing.
