His reasoning for not being a conservative is the same reasoning I'd give to explain why I am a conservative. Historical definitions have changed, and what was classical liberalism is now conservatism
Not, we are just siding with the currently least mental cases, and right now the biggest crazies are the left. I will vote for conservatives atm, but I wouldn't call myself a conservative. Rather, in the eyes of the left, everything right of their views is conservative. Which also isn't the case, and is why so many people are now siding with the right, for now. As soon as you guys start pushing religious ideology, it becomes no different than the woke, and i find myself in the middle again. We are not the same, but i will ally up with you to protect our rights, and our freedom of speech. Because though i think religious ideologies are just as bad as woke ideologies, one is pushing for communist like ideals, and we can't allow that.
That is surely true for economics and a great extent individualism, but would you say that "conservatism" currently covers people defending, as Konstantin does when listing his motives against it, drugs and sexual minorities? I would say it usually doesn't.
@Roberto14091989 certainly factions of social conservatism wouldn't defend those issues. Libertarian conservatives would. That said, I don't think anyone other than the radical left would defend radical decrminalization of hard drugs or extreme gender ideology. Children permanently transitioning, for example.

I now oppose decriminalizing all drugs. It would be nice if people could be trusted to have enough self-control not to spiral into addiction at the slightest sign of trouble in their lives, but that has proven to not be the case.
Liberty only works for moral people. That means a strong cultural framework of values. Atomized individuals cannot successfully navigate freedom by themselves. There is too much to know.

A great video. I am a small c conservative and I accept our friends on the left, they are free to live as they please in my opinion. I look forward to the day that they accept my life style choices and recognise my opinions and views are equally as valid as their own. We are not enemies we just need to behave like adults.
Unfortunately the left refuses to acknowledge any ideology or opinion that differs from theirs. They have become a cult. The truly neutral political view would be that of the libertarian, which I embrace for the most part. I would say I'm a right leaning libertarian. I find many of the new leftist ideologies appalling and destructive and they are NOT liberal by any means.

Yep, this. I'm Canadian and my family traditionally votes liberal. Which was traditionally viewed as the center party, with our goal in voting for it to be balance. I'm shocked when I see people trying to tell other people how to live. Most people can't manage their own lives, why the heck should they be taking a shot at anyone else's?

we are absolutely in an era of chaos. the problem is that the requests for a mild sense of order are being rejected by those on the drunken binge of being within chaos because they think it furthers themselves. You cannot keep going with chaos forever and, as we keep warning, the way back after chaos will be much worse. If anything the order type individuals, such as myself, are being incredibly restrained because we know there is great injustice, and ironically chaos, that can occur with high order regimes.
Compared to most of history since about 4000BC this one of the least chaotic times. War, death, upheaval, etc... was constant.

@@Strider1122 Short of a nuclear war, we are still on track to have the least number violent deaths as a percentage of the population this century compared to last the last few thousand years. The percentage of people living in extreme poverty has been reduced a huge amount in the last thirty years. Except for a few countries embracing authoritarianism, and the woke left becoming detached from reality politics is pretty stable too. Of course bad things will happen, but I'm not worried about losing my freedom or lifestyle in the next two decades.
The news is not a good place to get a feel for how things are going. Disaster and violence sell. Bland statistics about the crime rate going down, inflation improving, and world wide extreme poverty being greatly reduced don't get clicks.
Conservatism is not order forced by the state.

I think you largely have it backwards, we are not trying to change them, they are trying to change us.

I imagine what they are eluding to is the pretty obvious fact when you take out needing to conform to a tribe: both currently propagated ideologies that are termed left and right are not even close to being right or wrong in their whole. What's more, the appalling thing is no one seems to value the individual nuance in political views. For example, I believe in tax systems, but not necessarily income tax, or heavy tax for those earning at a normal persons "high end". I believe in free speech, however I also believe we aren't pushing enough social integration of immigrants, and still giving too much allowance for religion in what I would call social infrastructure. Now these may not be the perfect examples to you or explained poorly, but I am yet to see any party or newspaper that aligns with me even 50%, and I would strongly suggest you acknowledge where you differ in views to this supposedly rigid and large group of perfectly aligned individuals you deem as the 'right' as well. The black and white thinking is at best childish and at its worst aiding the doom that people such as konstantin are pointing to coming.
Do you consider yourself politically homeless? Because that's how I feel. I don't trust anyone. I can't have conversations with anyone. People make assumptions about me. They don't seem to realize that there are still people in the world,- even here in the U.S.,- who resist groupthink. It is HARD to be without a tribe. One has to overcome hundreds of thousands of years of evolutionary biology in which being without a tribe was a death sentence AND we have the evidence of history, media, & the internet showing us how cruel, hateful, & violent humans can be & how easily manipulated they can be that they are doing the right thing even as they commit atrocities. So history, the news & social media, & evolutionary biology are all telling us how dangerous it is to be without a tribe. That's a level of perceived threat that even our ancestors didn't face. Throughout most of human history, tribes of humans killed other tribes of humans out of fear & suspicion. Now we try to communicate with those outside our tribe instead of immediately killing them. So we have made progress. Or have we?

I appreciate the idea, but fundamentally, the issue is one of authority. Does the SCOTUS have the authority to force all states to permit gambling? No. Whether gambling in a state is legal or not is a state decision. The same thought applies to redefining marriage.. or to creating “civil unions”. I’m being technical, but homosexuals have ALWAYS had the right to marry. They simply couldn’t marry a person of the same sex… because that is not what the definition of “marriage” was. If one wants to change the definition of marriage, do so through our representative democratic process… by having state legislatures change the law.

And when the voting system in Britain is so unfair, I often wonder what's the point of voting at all when a party can get 4m votes and get significantly fewer seats that other parties with significantly fewer votes than them.

I think the issue is that in order to achieve equality they destroy or fundamentally undermine norms which provide the structure that allows the society to function. They insist that low-status and taboo practices are equal to high status practices and as such whole generations fall prey to dysfunctional and detrimental choices that they would have otherwise avoided. Hedonism- for example no longer being judged negatively is massively subversive.
Yep, they seem to want no norms. Except for the norms they will inevitably mandate.
It's not the hedonism, it's the lack of any notable substance. That is what makes it bad.
I have always found it hard to verbalize why I don't consider myself a conservative, even though I'm may seem outwardly so. You just nailed it Konstantin, thankyou.
These views represent the silent majority in Western Nations. This is why most of the time the political parties in charge are not too extreme on either end, as they generally sway center left or right. The issue is that the center parties have taken their citizens for granted and opened up opportunities for the extremes on either end to look appealing as the center has not listened to its citizen on core issues………it will be interesting how things play out.

I am afraid this is no longer acurate (has not been for a decade or two). While it is true many traditional ruling parties in the Western world have flocked around the centre (so the difference between the left and the right is waning) and distanced themselves from the citizens (their voters) it is not all.
(1) These 'uniparty' (to use the term most used in the US but valid almost everywhere) elites have grown strong disdain for the public and opinions of the citizens - elites believe to know best and citizens either share their views or are clearly stupid, unqualified, mislead by enemy propaganda or evil reactionaries - elites consider listening to these citizens to be wrong, they call it 'populist' to distiguish from their kind of good 'liberal' democracy (the term popular in EU) - which no longer works like democracy at all.
(2) Politics of these unchallenged ruling elites are shifting to the left or at least more government regulation, intervention and higher budgets (financed by taxes, debt and inflation) mostly not because of ideological reasons but because it gives governments more power and resources and opportunities for corrupt cooperation with large corporations. Ruling elites tend to restrict individual freedoms too - again simply to secure their power.
(3) At certain point many in these elites (both in governments and corporations) started to entertain radical far left policies - fascinating subject as most of them probably do not wish these policies to reach their ultimate revolutionary goals but they still support them for various reasons (until the very last moment - e.g. when looting mob reaches their own residence)
So, while I agree the silent majority of citizens has traditionally been (and hopefully still is) non extremist and that it used to keep societies stable, I believe the politics of the ruling elites are neither centrist nor actually reflecting views of this silent majority. Chances for a purely good way out of this are slim. The silent majority can see their representatives no longer representing them, the system no longer working as intended and just keeping appearances (as KK described a while ago) and citizens are reevaluating their calm silent strategy that lead them here.
I have virtually the same beliefs as you do, but have no problem considering myself a conservative. I disagree that conservatism is primarily concerned with the preservation of order. Who was more concerned with that than the Soviets? Conservatisms primary concern is preservation of traditional values and respect for the accomplishments of the past, as well as the primacy of common sense over idealism. If anything, you trend toward libertarian rather than Jacobin or Marxist values. You are on our side, whether you think you are or not! And I’m glad you are!

All western countries have a large minority that is not a part of their nation, and that minority that keeps growing and growing and will eventually not be a minority but instead a majority.
Do you really think it's possible to come together as a nation and redirect our focus, to make long terms plans for a better future other than what the current trajectory has us pointed towards, when one third of the population has no kinship with you?
Will there even be any room for this proverbial pendulum that you fear to swing the other way? It's not 2 minutes to midnight yet, but indeed the 11th hour for the West.
We need to accept there may not be a pretty solution.

As I've gotten older, my values have definitely moved from left to conservative, based on the reality that we will also not survive if we aren't having enough babies to preserve our species. It gets down to biology. However, am also critical of authority.

We are having PLENTY of babies to preserve our species! Good grief! The population has steadily been rising throughout history and the only setback was the Black Death. There were 4.5 billion people on Earth in the early to mid- 80s, when I was in college. Now we are over 8 billion. That's almost doubling the population in only 40 years. What YOU fear is that there are not enough Brits or Americans or Europeans to preserve that culture. Don't worry about the species. Every problem we have is exacerbated by more people. With fewer people, there would be way more of everything to go around, less pollution, less crime, less stress, less waste, and more land for nature to thrive. The 6th mass extinction is happening now because of human activities. There are only 80 Sumatran rhinos left in the world. There are 191 kakapos. There are 8.1 billion humans. The only thing that will drive us to extinction is if we destroy our life support system, the Biosphere. Earth will remain. Life on Earth may not. And for the first time, a single species has the ability to wipe out life on Earth. Not even ants, which outnumber us, or microbes have ever done that.

I saw a very good video where the differences between Conservatives and Liberals is explained. Conservatives realize that to dance on a stage - one must have a stage with strong foundations and while not averse to dancers - they prefer to take it a step at a time with new styles of dance. Liberals are more concerned with the freedom of the dancers than the strong foundations of the stage, while progressives want to take apart the stage as it represents (in their view) antiquated ideas and oppression.
Kostantin 's observation of the need for balance echoes what Thomas Sowell said: 'There are no solutions, only compromises'. I am sure of it. What has happened to make people think that heading to one or other extreme is going to be the answer to all their woes?

I am a devout Christian. I am conservative; not Republican, actually conservative. However, I agree with most of the views you stated.
The classical difference of conservative vs liberal is not the ultimate goal, merely the approach to getting there. The chasm only tends to grow and there is diminishing ground for someone to stand mid-chasm.
The story that is being written has rhymed over and over and over when one looks back into history. The stories change but the paths and outcomes are close enough to be considered the same.
Human hubris and arrogance leads this way. Always has.
At some point, the beast called Man will learn, but it doesn't look like any time soon.

Konstantin, please change your views on drug legalisation!
As a former drug user, I can tell you legalisation probably would work for people such as yourself, successful people that have it all together personally. The problem is, most people don't have it all together and lack the discipline required to keep these things under control. Often, too, people are exposed to these substances when they are too young and when the brain is still developing. Also, there is a very strong link between drug use and mental illness. Speaking as a father, I don't want to increase my son's access to these things, I want to decrease access. I hope that as a person with some influence you might reevaluate your view on this matter.
What I find peculiar about our generation and the rampant over liberalisation we suffer, is that we look in awe and envy at countries like Japan, yet at the same time we completely reject the conservative social structures necessary to attaining such a state.
The questions I like to ask are, would you be comforted to know that the babysitter for your kids had just smoked a joint? How about your surgeon or airline pilot?

@Deadguy1988 Decriminalisation and legalisation are different things. I too am for decriminalisation, to a degree, at least for the user, though not so much for the dealers.
Advocates of drug use so often point to the Netherlands as the exemplar that it has become a cliché. Things in the Netherlands aren't quite as squeaky clean as you might think. Based on anecdotal data, it would seem things are trending downwards. I would also add that such things are not a one size fits all solution. Perhaps it did once work in the Netherlands, and maybe it will work in Portugal, for a while, this doesn't mean it will work for the UK, US, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Though all countries are majority European ethnicity, there are differences in culture and education which all have an impact on the outcome of such policies. I suspect for the UK things wouldn't be quite so rosy.
He should look at the videos in America in the places its been legalised and what its done there.

While I share your sentiment, I worry for a different reason.
You are correct that people in the past have tried to force others to fit into their order and usually through violence. I do agree that people should be allowed to do what they want as long as it doesn't infringe on others.
What I worry about is the pendulum swinging the other way too hard. I can't speak for the UK but I've run across people these days who hate when you have individual freedom and do as you want in reverse. I've met those who shame you when you don't want to date transpeople, or black people or a number of other categories. You're called an incel or some other derogatory term for standing on your own.
People should always have freedom of choice, but I think that humans will always try to coerce others into partaking with them. The pendulum is swinging the opposite way and I've been in conversations where people didn't take kindly to me saying no to things I didn't want.

Look at the Weimar Republic, especially in Berlin. That was swinging really far to the left (very similar to today’s society) then look at what happened.

To avoid disaster we have to work together. Unfortunately the only groups I see working together seem to have totalitarian tendencies: UN, WHO, WEF, EU , G7 etc.

How about an example? I believe that religious marriage and other marriage should be separate so that there is a separation of church and state. If a church or mosque or any religious establishment does not want to disobey their beliefs then they will not be forced to by the government (Bake me a cake).
Religious freedom is far more important. I do not care if people want to be gay and get married, but there MUST be a separation of church and state.
Women working. I guess my only real opinion of this is that it pretty much started as a corporate scam, but I don't think people want it to change. Work sucks. I have a great job, but if I could not work and still make money, I would do a million other things. I would say a big problem that SHOULD be solved in America is that women have a choice to and are HEAVILY pushed to work, but honestly most women do not have a choice NOT to work. A good friend of mine recently had a child and his wife had to return to work after only a few weeks post-birth. She was crying about how she wishes she could stay home with her daughter, but they cannot afford it. I would say this is a pretty massive problem in this country. Both people are working so they have to leave a 1.5-2 month old baby to be raised by .... ??? Someone??? Parents hopefully? Maybe a super expensive babysitter? But then do you feel comfortable leaving an extremely dependent human in the hands of some random person you found on the internet?
Forcing a baker to bake a cake against their religious beliefs is something that the progressive left does, not conservatives. Also, if women didn't work, and we had the more traditional society like what we had in the "old" days, the cost of living would be less, there would be more jobs, and wages would be higher. Women working just means the labor pool is larger so companies can pay less.
Personally I find myself to be more Libertarian in my political views but I will not mince words when I say that the LGBTQ culture is disgusting these days and they have perversed the whole movement. I voted to allow gay marriage but now these people want special protections and rights that the rest of us don't have. That's what happens when you "give an inch".

Poorer women have always worked outside the home. They were teachers, nurses, secretaries, bank tellers, and worked in factories. Even housewives sold or traded goods they'd make. Baking and decorating cakes, canned goods, clothing they made, quilts, etc. Studies show the majority of women want to stay at home and raise families. That's why many didn't re-enter the workforce following the lockdowns. They figured out you can do it, it just takes budgeting and doing without every new gadget. Democrats and some Republicans openly chastised them for not going back to work. I know what his fear is, and knowing that little fact tells me it's pretty unfounded. The US also has been through extremely similar situations repeatedly and that did not happen.

To define conservatism and liberalism as purely social concepts is I think to miss the point a little bit. We also have financial conservatism and liberalism. We have political or governmental conservatism and liberalism. These concepts are not just something to be played out in the social arena.

Basically this is the premise of the Tv., Show ' Babylon 5 ' . Every 1,000 years the Galaxy goes through a reset between ' Order & Chaos ' . What's he's describing is a reactionary, not a conservative. It would be nice if we would strive for that middle ground and I actually think many people would agree with your assesment. A differentiated view is not good for the algorithm howewer, because the extreme positions carry more emotion and that is what draws attention. I really wonder if social media will manage to tear our society apart.

It is because that view of equality changes the basis of marriage from being based on a lifelong love covenant to being constructed around romantic love. The latest pillar to be chipped away is no-fault divorce. Marriage was socially constructed as the best way to create stable society by sacralising the covenant love relationship in marriage which produced the best society for raising socially integrated children and so securing the future!

The only thing is when it comes to marriage, marriage is a institution ordained by God and something like gay marriage is a mockery of God and religion.
