I think watching classical singers and vocal coaches react to this song is gonna be a new comfort thing for me. the surprise moment is always brilliant.
She broke herself with no choices in that matter regardless of being a strong lady. Her life got fucked not her . Power pay attention ladies okay. She is amazing as she is. No accept just love for who she is.
Heck out “The Charismatic Voice” , Elizabeth Zharoff and her interviews with Will Ramos. They actually put a camera in his throat and recorded his vocal folds while he was singing like this!
this video was made to Highlight the new drummers (Vlad) skills, and Take on Pisces. Vlad is Self taught, stepped in in his old band when they needed a drummer and vlad made the best decision of his life to try it out.
I feel 7/8 in the beginning guitar riff and 6/8 when the drum beat changes still in the verse. However the count for the pre chorus is a 4/4 feeling to me with the rimshots, and the chorus is a "4/4" feeling as well but with 5 bars before it repeats. A lot of the djent type of music does a lot of over the bar type of riffs. The way the time changes are so seamless, keeps me coming back to this song.
Just FYI. It alternates between 3/4 and 4/4 during the first two verses, another way of saying that is that it's at 7/8 all the time, but it does not go from 7/8 to 6/8.
@@janfransson5910 Time stamps for this video not the original. 0:10-0:46 7/8 I understand your point about counting it as 3/4 and 4/4 alternating here if you want, no argument. 0:46-1:06 6/8 Here however its a swing type feel. 7 doesn't fit, its only six. 4:23-4:32 I count as 4/4 but could be subdivided as 3/8 and 5/8 repeating if that feels better for ya.
I would suggest watching the One Take Live performance of "Judgement and Punishment", so you can see her body and facial adjustments as she sings very clearly as it stays focused on her.
This studio session is basically a studio recording for the "at the time" new drummer, Vlad, so the vocals are the album version with layers, etc. Tatiana is a Pisces, and the soft/harsh vocals are reflecting the duality of the two sides of her personality, along with the fish references and her plugs in her earlobes have fish on them. The most common follow ups to Pisces are one of a couple live concert performances, like "Perrenial" at Wacken 2019, or "Who is gonna be the one" which I believe was at an Atlas Festival. Others go directly to her One Take Vocal performance of "Judgement & Punishment", which is just the camera on her singing in a booth at her home the entire time, so you can see what she's doing as she sings.
absolutely agree - Perenial and Judgment and Punishment should be next to react to. Tatiana is unique singer and band is very skilled and talented also.
Yeah, Eugene said in an interview that live vocals have a slight delay on it, but studio vocals are doubled and the harsh vocals have a pitch shifter and slight distortion on it which seems to be par for the course when producing this style of music. If you listen to concert footage you get the raw experience of her extreme vocals.
@@rikardottosson1272 - I've watched every interview they've ever done, and unless it was in a written interview, I don't recall ever hearing Eugene saying that they added distortion to the vocals in this or in any other song. What for? It would just remove the clarity of Tatiana's enunciation when growling and that's something she would never agree with. And it's not like she needs it, really.
Love the FACT that you're DEFINITELY NOT READY for the change in her vocal dynamics when she changes... (NOBODY is ready straight off the bat, so to speak). PRICELESS!!!!
@@michaelrue1400 I wholeheartedly Agree, Brother... Jinjer is in the DEATH METAL genre. Tatiana, their Vocalist, is a BEAST... she is so versatile (& her vocal range/styling spans everything from Death Metal to Reggae). No wonder why they took off musically as a group.
Welcome to Jinjer. The band is amazing and Tati is a vocal goddess. The song is about the duality of the Pisces personality. (Refer to the yin-yang symbol for pisces). The growling is produced through the use of her false vocal folds. You would really enjoy "Judgement and Punishment" (One take vocal performance); it would allow you to view her singing techniques upclose. Very good analysis and reaction. (Subbed)
This song is pretty much all about Tati. How she is usually giving, kind and selfless. But she can be self critical and insecure and shy. But today she's going to be a friend to herself. Meaning she's gonna cut herself some slack instead of being overtly self critical. The harsh parts refer to the walls she puts up like armor. ie fish scales look like chain mail glistening in the sun. Fish being the sign for Pisces. Sometimes she can be fun and full of life and sometimes she can be self destructive.
Actually, if you false these growls, you will utterly ruin your vocal cords. There is some use of them for pitch, but the majority actually comes from the gut.

Two of the band members are Pisces. The singer, Tatiana and the Bassist, Eugene. Both of them contributed lyrically to this song but Tati is the main lyricist for most of their songs. Yes, this song is about being a Pisces and embraces the duality of the sign (one being brings life, another runs for death). Did you notice the little goldfish in her gauges? ( edit: the more a person listens to the harsh vocals the easier they are to understand. the ears and the brain will teach itself to recognize what's being said just like when you learn a new language)
It took me almost a month of listening while reading lyrics but I'm primarily kinesthetic and secondary visual so hearing isn't my thing and I notice reactors who are new to growls but more auditory picking it up faster.
@@j.f.fisher5318 I'm usually not into growling(the only songs of Cradle of Filth I can listen to are with female vocals like in Nymphetamine that contrast with Danny's growls that I can't stomach on their own) and can't understand most of what they're saying sometimes even with lyrics in front of me but Tatiana's growls to me sound so clear, I easily understand the lyrics without even reading it. Maybe me being Russian and her being Russian-speaking Ukrainian, so similar accents, have something to do with that too.
I feel this is the best new metal band I’ve heard in years. The overall package is fantastic. Guitar plants great her voice is phenomenal and she growls like a dragon. It’s unbelievable I’m impressed. Thanks for the critique.
"Scale armor blaze...": I believe this line is actually "Scale armor belies virgin innocence". I don't know if this might help with drawing meaning from the lyrics, but thought I'd offer that as a possible alternative line. Also, I love that you pointed out the lack of first person pronouns (I/me/my) in the chorus! You mentioned wanted to see her more closely--there's a video of her doing a one-take vocal for Judgment and Punishment that really shows her face and neck clearly.
@@helgehansen363 Oh wow! Thanks for correcting me. I've always seen why "blaze" fits with the imagery, because of the line later, where she says "Meet me flashing...". But that's just not what my ears have always heard--and "belies" also fits that line with the duality theme. I'm glad to know what she actually wrote!
If you want to know how it is done, ask 'The Charismatic Voice' here on youtube. Opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff can explain a lot because she learned how to use such a harse voice/sound in a healthy way. I hope you will be able to comprehend how such things can be done. Please let us know . Added after 14 hours: Elizabeth works with Will Ramos and Chris Liepe on the course 'The Ultimate Path to Extreme Vocals with Will Ramos'. I heared they officialy started this last week.
Elizabeth works with Will Ramos and Chris Liepe on the course 'The Ultimate Path to Extreme Vocals with Will Ramos'. I heared they officialy started this last week. I just found out. I'll put it in the main comment.
I enjoyed your reaction. Jinjer has been one of my favorite bands for the last 5 years. Jinger uses a very solid jazz fondation in many of their songs they have also incorporated Reggie into their music. A new Jinjer song is like a musical adventure, it is hard to predict what twist or turn it's going to take.
Hi Jess, thanks for another great reaction. As far as I understand the lyrics, this song is about the duality (Pisces) of someone who has emotionally suffered during relationships but is fighting the insecurity and trauma of those experiences in order to find a meaningful relationship. Have a great evening and thank you for the upload.
Who’s Gonna Be The One The live version should be your next reaction to Jinjer. She has such a presence on stage and the end will shock you. Her talent!
Great reaction! So glad you enjoyed it! Jinjer is really unlike anyone else in the business right now. They are a full package with near perfect synergy. A general term for growling is harsh vocals, which can include the low false cord roar and the higher vocal fry scream which is more common in "screamo". Jinjer calls themselves progressive metalcore and groove metal. There are so many good songs, I would recommend "Perennial" live at Wacken, "Judgement and Punishment" one take, (as you can see Tati close up), and "Teacher, Teacher". The drummer is Vlad, and they made this video to showcase him and really was a perfect fit. He is actually a classically trained pianist. Tati btw is a Pisces, and the chorus symbolism draws directly to the Ying and yang nature of the sign. Can't wait to see more from you soon!
@@jessicasopranonotes check out eivor from the faeroese islands. she has some serious vocal techniques you've never heard before, from high to low, from tribal to modern, including kulning and throat singing.
I hope you'll check out their other stuff too because Pisces is really just an entry point, effective for reaction videos because of the surprise, but they have so many better songs than this one 😄 "Perennial live at Wacken" is a good example of how they perform live ❤
I agree about the point of entry. Pisces is the gateway drug. And I know the band themselves don't regard it as one of their favorite songs. Maybe they got tired of the same reactions over and over, everyone freaking on Tatiana's vocal duality, when the video was meant to showcase new drummer Vlad. But to me Pisces is a classical level composition that perfectly highlights the stylistic contrasts of the band, establishing a mood, subtly building tension leading into the shock of the chorus; with peaks and valleys, each peak cresting subtly higher and higher into the final payoff of the last crescendo as emeralds are ripped away. It's an emotional rollercoaster, and the lyrics express and follow the duality perfectly. For me Pisces is the perfect distillation of Jinjer's sound and style. Not their heaviest song by a long shot, nor their most complex. But one of their more expressive and well-crafted distillations of their niche. Contrast.
I'm very happy that you enjoyed your reaction to this song! If you'd like to see more of her face/body as she performs, I suggest that you watch a live performance.
Yay! Another Jinjer Pisces reaction that I hadn't seen :) Me and a few others make a hobby of watching reactions to this song :) A few tidbits I've learned about Tatiana and the band: "Heavy Vocals" a.k.a. the growl utilises a different part of the throat - the part that we use to make a heave sound. It took Tatiana 12 years to train her growl this way. But this is how she can switch cleanly between the two styles. Another bit of info: This video was made to highlight their new drummer, who has had no formal training in drums - he is a classically trained pianist who taught himself so he could play in Jinjer. A great one to prove she's actually making that noise is Perennial Live at Wacken. Welcome to Jinjer!
Their track I Speak Astronomy is a prog metal epic with multiple time signatures and Tati flipping between smooth and staccato phrasing, doing her growls and topping it off with some more high belts at the end.
Welcome to the Jinjer family! :) The song is about the mythos of the PISCES sign and what it teaches us. The back and white balanced within the same being, the multiple sides of our own personality, the eternal struggle within us, the battle between light and dark that makes us all human. Every musician in Jinjer is a master of their craft. Vlad, the drummer is an accomplished classical pianist for crying out loud :) LOL Taty is simply mind blowing, her growling technique is second to none, but her sultry first register combined with her powerful belts just makes it for a complete singer. She is also a great poet and she brings that into the fold for Jinjer. I am yet to hear one bad song by them, these guys are simply the BEST "new" metal band around right now in my humble opinion. Their songs mix complex time signatures with beautiful and catchy melodies with POP sensibilities. Add in absolutely brutal passages and it is a tough combination to beat. I would highly recommend you listen to wallflower next.
Jess, I just love the way you react to all these music and how interesting is for you to understand lyrics of the songs you're discovering. I also love how you express all the things you have learned by studing them. I really appreciate it. I don't know if others reactors do what you do and the way you do, and it's so precious. Congrats for being original and educative. Love your channel! 😊
I love finding reactors doing this song. You did not disappoint. The look on your face was priceless. She's a powerhouse. BTW, This video was done to showcase their new drummer.
LOVE your reaction! I don't care for growling either, but I love this band. The styles and the musicianship makes them special. Oddly, she has about 10 more voices you haven't heard yet. Understanding lyrics on the first take is difficult, but believe me, in the 70s we didn't understand a lot of classic rock either, but if you love the music you will research the lyrics. Check out more of them, they don't dissapoint.
She has an incredible one take version of her song, judgment and punishment, where the camera doesn’t leave her face on a profile view. Thank you for your expertise and review. Tatiana is amazing.
In a tea time chat with Elizabeth on The Charismatic Voice sje said that after hearing Otep Shamaya doing harsh vocals she was inspired and basically went to edge of town and tried screaming until she found something that both sounded good and didn't hurt too much. She herself has no further technical knowledge of exactly how the sound is created. Could be false fold, could be fry scream or a mix or something else
I concur. As I said in my comment I believe she is doing a series on harsh vocals learning from those who do. There is a cute short of her at a kitchen table doing her own harsh vocals.
That was probably ist Jinjer reaction I saw and it is FKN classic love how she is now a full on metal head ! 2nd one is fairy voice mother and the cup of tea just at the start of the chorus classic !!! she then starts teaching flapping vocal chord technique awesome reaction
@@davidpetersonharvey Yeah no true vocal fold engagement but beyond that we don't really know exactly. Luckily Tatiana is part of the expanded research that The Charismatic Voice and her team started with Will Ramos so soon there will be camera footage and muscle activity sensor data of exactly what she is doing
You would probably love their one take session of "Judgement and Punishment". It displays further their diversity and prowess. My personal favorite has to be either "Perennial" live at Wacken, or the official video of "I Speak Astronomy". Loved the reaction, I subscribed. Hope to see more, welcome to the rabbit hole.
Oh man, if you do 'judgment and punishment ' you will see her do other styles as well! And it's one take performance let's you see her vocal production quite well.
First and foremost, if that’s your voice at the end, I want to hear more of that. Second, I love this very respectful reaction. I have an intense fascination for opera; I think it’s a wonderful enigma. So it is quite a treat to hear what an opera vocalist thinks of one of my favorite metal videos. This band is from Ukraine and they toured very close to non-stop for their First Seven Years - going through personnel changes in the process. I got into Jinjer’s music at one of the hardest times: post-divorce. I never get sick of reactions to this one-take play through of “Pisces”. The reactions just keep coming! It’s such a beautiful song.
Welcome to the Jinjer rabbit hole. It is a rewarding one. After watching many reactions I noticed that professional musicians of ANY trade, from Hip hop through country to Opera, are most fascinated by it, because they are able to recognise what level of skill this requires (or simply - recognise greatness) and also the how cleverly it is written.
When she "growls" it's actually softer than when she sings. That's why she has a specific type of Mic but she's been doing it for years and she can switch on a dime. She's a master at her craft.
Tati is a vocal beast and renowned for switching styles instantly. Her speaking voice is quite low for a woman, so the high belt in the end part is something she rarely does live - it'd strain her voice too much to keep singing hour and a half, so she usually growls it. On the album recording there's growl and belt overlaid. The rough vocals here are usually referred as growling, signature for death metal and derivatives. (Jinjer defies easy genre definitions, but deathcore, mix of metalcore and death metal, is the usual label). Because her growls are made with false vocal folds she's not limited by the range of the true vocal folds and can thus go lower than the speaking voice. But it did take some *serious* amount of practicing to get there. This particular song is quite straightforward for Jinjer, both vocally and compositionally. Other songs feature reggae, jazz and other styles on clean vocals, often several in one song. The lyrics you easily find on the web are wrong on the first line of the chorus: it's "scale armour belies", which makes more sense, too. The song is about duality of pisces, reflected for example in one going for life and another for death. If you look at the opening verses, you see it describe her putting up a nice and harmless face out to hide the turmoil inside, and then the chorus kind of reveals what she tries to keep hidden. So it's again the duality - the face she puits to the world, and real her.
6:32 I grew up with death metal criticism. The easy way to explain the lyrics part is the same as opera lyrics. I watch your own performance in you channel home page and even though it’s in French (I’m Canadian and French is my first language) I couldn’t understand a word. It’s exactly the same with harsh vocals. Once you get use to the genre, your brain makes the connection and you become more aware of the lyrics. Hope that makes sense ❤
The band is Roman on guitar, Eugene on bass and Vlad on drums and, of course, Tatiana on vocals. They are from the Ukraine. Tati is a Pisces. She wrote most of the lyrics but asked Eugene for help to finish it. He has stated that he tried to write about Tatiana but felt in the end what he wrote was like a self-confession. I believe the last six lines were his contribution. I think the song is about a duel personality with the dark side influenced by abusive relationships (perhaps).
I saw them live last year & her vocals were spot on. Im also amazed how great the drummer is with such a minimalist drum kit. Great reaction video. Thanks :)
-After becoming a fan of reaction videos, I saw reactions for this song pop up a number of times as suggestions. I decided to check the song out and, being a Gen-X’er as well as a Pisces also, was blown away by it. After a few poor choices at the time of other songs, I am a huge fan of this band. I saw them live in December in the 1st concert that I had been to in “Damn, I’m Old!” years and seeing them again on July 31st while still going on the slow deep dive I’ve voluntarily taken. -The two “sides” remind me of the song “This Love” by Pantera. Both start with the character that the vocalist is portraying being reserved and maybe a bit unsure of what they’re wanting to say. When it comes to the chorus, that’s when the other side comes out and takes over. With the second verse, they go back to that first side. However, they’re not as timid and are more sure of what they’re thinking. Great storytelling. -No matter how many times I hear this song, I have to stop whatever I’m doing at “Pisces swimming through the river.” That belt will never not get me. Tatiana is such an amazing and versatile vocalist. -As I’ve become more and more of a fan, I can’t help but see comparisons between them and Queen. The first way is that both have vocalists with incredible talent who possess a charisma that draws the audience’s attention. However, when you listen to them and get past her amazing vocals, you realize just how good the rest of the band is. You realize that this is a band and not just a singer with a backing band. The other way is music philosophy. Years ago, I was riding around with someone when “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” came on the radio. When the person I was with asked who it was, I told them it was Queen, which drew a double take from them. They said that it didn’t sound like Queen which made me think “What does Queen sound like?” They went all across the musical spectrum and did it so well. With Jinjer, I’ve had that same feeling. They’re labeled as Metal/Metalcore but incorporate a variety of influences in a masterful way. -While “Pisces” was the song that got my attention(I work hard not to say that it “hooked” me), what made me a fan was “Bad Water.” As I eluded to, the other songs I checked out weren’t connecting with me and I almost became just a fan of the song but not the band. What I was looking for another “Pisces” and I wasn’t getting it. One day, I checked out the official live video for “Bad Water.” After listening to it, the first thing I thought was “I get it now.”
Ah, yes, the oh, so subtle discovery of what lovely Tatiana brings to the vocal table...reminds me of John Wick, as Aurelio explains to Vigo: "Well, he stole John Wick's car, sir, and killed his dog"... Vigo's response: "oh." Priceless!
Welcome to Jinjer! I hope you continue with this amazing band and vocalist, they have a very deep catalog of awesome songs for you to discover! Great reaction!
I am deffinitely in agreement with everybody suggesting Judgement and punishment (one take vocal performance) as your next Jinjer reaction. Also, if you feel like exploring these type of vocals/music may I reccomend Spiritbox (songs Holy Roller, Rule of Nines, Constance). Courtney, their vocalist, has a lot of amazing one take performance videos too.
This is an extremely artistic song. Everything about it is demonstrating the dual-oppositional nature of Pisces. Pisces is the sign that represents the balance of polar opposites. You hear the dual nature in the music, between the slow jazzy sections and the heavy metal sections, and you hear it in the vocals, between the soft melodic parts and the deep gutterals. Lyrically, it incorporates the fish symbolism of the Pisces sign, and represents the almost doomed destiny of a fish that is lured, caught and gutted. Generalized to the human world, the song tells the story of someone who has learned to live with fear and distrust because she has been lured and charmed before, but has been hurt because of it, so now she fears to trust because she is afraid of losing herself. The last line "emeralds are ripped away," refers to her scales (what makes her unique and beautiful and the essence of who she is) being stripped away on the butcher's table.
I’ve watched about a hundred reaction videos to this performance and yours is my favorite. Open minded. Thoughtful. Authentic emotions. Thank you and kudos.
You can endlessly watch how the water flows, the fire burns and how the opera singer reacts to song Pisces from Jinder. :) Thank you very much for your reaction.
7:10 You feel the work needed to grawl properly, without destroying your vocal chords despite they are "Heavy duty" for this exercise. And yes, she can litterally grawl at anyone, anywhere, anytime, that's her level of mastering the technique and the instrument (it is her voice, of course !) ❤ And just to say, switching from sweet to grawl or inverse is an exercise by itself 😅 12:40 Yes, you say it right, it is that contrast making a great rock ballad ! Grawling with grace is not given to everyone, thank you for refreshing Jinjer in my deficient memory ❤👍🖖
Wow, thoughtful analysis - respect! (And as a musician and theory geek was happy to hear you pick out the Sol - or min 9th - chord the guitarist played during the verses:) Jinjer is one of the best progressive metal bands in the game now. What’s more they’re all essentially war refugees from east Ukraine which makes them that much more special.
I am thrilled you covered Jinjer! They are from Ukraine. Eugene, the bass player, never played until college and is completely self taught. Tatiana (Tetiana, but changed for ease...) is from the Donbas region and her city of Donetsk has been occupied by Russia since the start of the war. They had to tour non stop when war broke out in Crimea because they could not return home (2012). As a result, they were broke but their music is really tight and live they are incredible. This song is their break out piece. They are touring now at the behest of their country to garner support for their people. If anyone wants, they have shirts on their Jinjer webpage with all proceeds going to help civilians in Ukraine. I never was a fan of growling, but Jinjer has become my favorite band today. Great energy and story with a unique sound.
I highly recommend checking out sleep token they have a vocalist that is absolutely inhuman and his range is amazing even down to using his breathing musically.
Another soprano you should check out is Zora of Blackbriar. Zora is magical No one else like her And how she voice mastery of the subtle tones runs and flips. My Souls Demise is a great song.
One of the most talented vocalists in music...and definitely one of the best frontpersons in live music. Tati is a savage live...she definitely has the "it" factor, as does the whole band.
If you check out her doing her song Judgement and punishment. You will see only her and the microphone at all time. There you will see better her technique. Much love from Stockholm Sweden/ J
If you get used to listening to specific vocalists and their singing style you gradually can understand them, but on some bands they are just incomprehensible
I've heard this song literally more than a hundred times, and have seen as many reactions to it. Your's is one of the best! Your overall analysis of all aspects of this song was really really good (I just can't remember having heard so much intelligent reflexion of all these aspects). Especially your thoughts at the beginning that there has to come "something heavier" due to Tatis looks - 😂😂😂. And then of course your surprise painted on your face when Tatis dark growling voice starts! I appreciate too that you got into the lyrics - too bad that you didn't come to the part at the end where this "innocent virgin" little fish is slaughtered by those "handsome butchers"- for me a very poetic and at the same time very true picture of our lovely/cruel paradise/hell earth that we are condemned to live in. This becomes an even heavier touch when you consider that Jinjer is a Ukrainian band and what is happening there right now. Gives me some feeling of "shivering inside" too. . Congratulations to your reaction!👍👍👍😀And of course: You are a Pro who knows everything about voice and singing (growling and harsh vocals taking apart of course) - I bet it would be joyful hear you singing!
I was smiling all the time during your first pause and talking about the contrast and not expecting that voice from her, even speculating the song may change directions.
I love how every single one of the reactions I've seen on this song specifically go from amazement to horror but amazed at the same time LOL. Love it. #MetalHeadByChoice I can't wait to see her tomorrow in Raleigh!!!
Tatiana crinkling her nose when growling is the cutest thing. Shes so tiny anc pretty but sound so monsterous but manages to look both parts simultaneously. Its like watching a seriously pissed off puppy. Its like "DAYM!" and "Awww" at the same time.
To me, the song is not only about the duality of the Sign, but also it's literally about the life of a fish, living free till inevitable capture brings knives to rip the emeralds (scales )away! The lyrics mention scales, her fin and tail, hooks and nets, Neptune's child and swimming through the river all your lives against the stream, searching for a hook to catch on and see the sunbeam. I think the imagery is about literally being a fish! And I love it.
I love your analisys, I usally see reactions to this song to see the surprise face but the way you go into details is great, like I think you are the first one I see mentioning the fact of the pronouns in the verses and also de guitar theme. The song by the by is about duality using the metaphore of the picis zodiac sing. The "scale armoour Blaze" is a reference to the armour we use to face life every day. The song also related to the struggles we all face, expecially when we can not be ourselves.
Amazing how this song has been picked apart by singers and vocal coaches yet you still offer something new. I haven't seen anyone else mention how the lyrics shift from verse to chorus. One thing I'd like to point out is the distance between Tatiana and the mic when she doing cleans versus when she's doing the growl. I've known a couple of people who can do the growl vocals and they always stay nearly on top of the mic because it's not a style where you can really project.
The best there is. The GOAT. Must see Judgement and Punishment one take vocal, Wallflower, Vortex, Perennial live at Wacken, Teacher Teacher, Mediator is a face melter lol. Every song kills.
I absolutely love your analysis that's coming from your operatic training. Pisces the fish has a duality and that's what the lyrics denote. One brings life. The second rush to death. I hope that this helps makes sense of the lyrics.
This is called growling. Tatiana, number one growly girl. The first line of the chorus is "scale armor belies virgin innocence." Do "Pit of Consciousness(live in Kiev)" next its her deepest offering IMO.
Hi, welcome to the "wonderful world of Jinjer" and a deep rabbit of their great songs! I've been a musician since I was a young kid and I've played in multiple bands in several genres over the years, but I was never into metal music with scream/growl harsh vocals until I discovered Jinjer near the end of 2021. I immediately loved them because of their sophisticated and varied songwriting, fantastic musicianship and the incredible vocals of Tatiana, with her amazing ability to instantly transition back and forth from her beautiful clean singing voice to some of the best harsh vocals I've heard, female or male. Tatiana taught herself how to do the harsh vocals, but according to some analysis videos I've watched by vocal coaches who are familiar with harsh vocals, she uses proper technique (with use of her false vocal chords) so she isn't causing any damage or strain to her true vocal chords. Elizabeth Zharoff has a great interview with Tatiana (over an hour) on her TH-cam channel The Charismatic Voice from about a year and a half ago. If you want to further your "Jinjer journey", I'd recommend checking out the "Live From Wacken 2019" video for their song Perennial. Tatiana's "live one take vocal performance" video of Judgement and Punishment, the official video for Wallflower (which shows their excellent songwriting and the lyrics/video relate Tatiana's struggle with being an introvert in the very public music industry, along with her tendency to procrastinate and the pressure she feels from the other band members to finish all the lyrics and record her vocals after they have finished all the music for an album), the official video for Teacher, Teacher, the Napalm Records official live video for Who Is Gonna Be The One (which has mostly harsh vocals, but it shows her incredible stage presence and it has a bit of unexpected reggae-influenced clean vocals) and the official video for Home Back (an intense song and video which was written in 2019 about the chronic fighting with Russian-backed separatists since 2014 in their homeland of the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, but it has an even greater emotional impact since sociopath Putin's 2022 all-out invasion...plus it has a very cool bossa nova-ish middle section). BTW, I love your channel and I think you're one of the nicest and smartest music reactors/analysts on TH-cam! 😁
This song was my 1st intro to Jinger (sounds like the root, BTW) well over a year ago. It is an amazing composition and the dichotomy is so wonderful. It is my favorite song of theirs. Tati's clean vocals are so wonderful and her false fold growls are her trademark. The band members are stellar in their performance. Check out Tati's video performance of Jinjer, Judgement (& Punishment) one take vocal performance. The camera is perfectly positioned through the entire video to show her production of clean & harsh vocals while wearing a bikini top. It is awesome. Great reaction & analysis!
I'm absolutely not a fan of growling but this song goes through me and gives me goosebumps. I've been a fan of metal for many years and am always looking for new music and I'm really grateful that a work colleague showed me some of Jinjer's music. This song actually starts out very "harmless" and then literally hits you hard through the ear canal and into your brain. But that's what I like about this genre, that it's always good for surprises. Thank you for this kind of music .
Just found you. Fellow Tati and Jinjer fans dig the pros being introduced to the band. Above all, i gotta give you mad props for your production choices. The use of reply edits thruout the clip; narrating thru the parts you choose to analyze for us; using word graphics to communicate without stopping the song playback.....great stuff.
Great video! I think you made every Jinjer fan grin when you said you thought a change was coming. We knew you still weren't expecting THAT. I don't know where "screamo" came from, but I just refer to the vocal techniques using distortion that you often hear in metal as "harsh vocals". There are different flavors. Some sound like screaming, some like growling, sometimes there's a mix. Tatiana can do both, which you kind of hear in this one. She is more growly in the chorus, but the final line is much closer to a scream. Pisces is kind of different from most of Jinjer's music because the point of the song is to highlight the two sides of Tatiana's thoughts and feelings. I think her clean vocals are slightly more poppy than in other songs and you've only heard a portion of her harsh vocals. I'm sure there are already tons of comments reminding Perennial live at Wacken. It's a good one, but there are plenty of other videos you'll enjoy too. Her one take performance of Judgement and Punishment will give you a clear look at her body as she sings.
I second others below, watch Jinjer's Judgement & Punishment. Amazing! This song is so poetic and such a beautiful melding of the themes of water, and a beautiful expression of the personality traits of the astrological sign Pisces. I loved watching you as you observed Tati do a "Pisces flip" in the song. Yin/Yang, light/dark, sweet/rageful. The music flows softly, like a calm stream, with her gentle voice, and then crashes into the rocks as she screams, and finally with that huge belt, it cascades over a huge cliff into the ocean. So powerful.
I will bring it together here. The music and vocals represent moodiness of Pisces From the music aspects it gives the feeling of waves coming and going
I've seen them live - definitely worth it! Check out some of their other stuff. This band is one of those that open people's eyes for the metal genre 😉
Loved your reaction. I couldn't believe that sound came out of her either, the first time I heard them...now I love them. I also appreciate it that, although the growl is not your cup of tea, you were very fascinated by it. Also, I like that you acknowledged the talent of the other band members.
Been a huge fan of this song and band since discovering it and them, this composition in many ways lends to a very ebb and flow quality similar of water. The lyrics I can greatly relate to. I'll highlight a few lyrics as I understand them: "step forward and meet a new sunrise, a coward is shivering inside" (though we can in some settings/circumstances seem bold pisces usually lean more toward introversion and may also be prone to inaction) "today I'll be a friend of mine and swallow suffering with smile" (sometimes we are our own friend but often compared to most people we have internal conflicts with ourselves and when we are facing these and similar stresses it likely won't be apparent from the outside) "No promises I'll ever give, don't rely on me and I won't deceive" (We're often avoidant of commitment, but will frequently lie sometimes intentionally sometimes unintentionally to people-please. I may offer help and not intend to give it or I may offer help and very well intend to give it but be subconsciously aware it's something I'm not capable of or can't deliver.) "the beginning or the end you can't tell when I wave my fin and shake my tail" (The waving of fin and tail is our relationships the waving fin might be meeting a new person if it's someone we will become good friends with or someone we will probably never speak to again might not be discernable from how we carry ourselves. The tail might lend more toward relationships of more significant nature for those of us who experience those kinds of attraction we may fall in and out of love/lust quickly/easily OR be hot and cold about expressing it externally) "neptune's child shivering inside, drowns in the liquid gold" (the previously mentioned inner turmoil can sometimes fuel us but may also lead to frequently feeling overwhelmed) "cherished his life to the underworld" (some of us may be prone to a somewhat pessimistic outlook) "meet me flashing when the winter cries" (winter a time of coldness and death possibly symbolizing depression and crying likewise grief; these are two emotional states we might be prone to slip in and out of 'flickering or flashing' more commonly than the average person.) "pisces swimming through the river, all their life against the stream" (certain universal truths of the human experience of being alive such as the way humans interact, life and what comes after, etc. may be things hard for pisces to handle or reconcile so while many different paths are available in life for a pisces it may be that none of them are the path of least resistance and being alive will just always be generally hard) "searching for a hook to catch on and see their sunbeam" ( we may be drawn to a fall sense of where we belong and or things that bring about detriment or demise to us) "then suffocate in painful tortures on cutting tables of callous men, under the knife of handsome butchers emeralds are ripped away" (we may be particularly easy to take advantage of by people we trust as well as aspects that others value in us like wise emotional council, peaceful social atmosphere may be lost as a result leaving us jaded and/or burnt out from extrovert energy) Following an aquatic theme, would love to hear and see your analysis and reaction to: Epica ft. Charlotte Wessels and Myrkur - Sirens of Blood and Water
I highly recommend watching every other Jinjer song recommended in the comments, for a close up look at screaming vocals, the charismatic voice teamed up with a different metal singer, Will Ramos, stuck a throat camera down his throat while he screamed and… it’s so cool
I so enjoyed your reaction and analysis to this one, Jess! Jinjer was my gateway band to some harsher vocal styles. Tati is such an accomplished singer to start with that the growling seems more like just another texture for her vocal. I realized at some point that these harsh vocal sounds are meant to reveal the darkness within human beings; places of anguish, cruelty, despair. They're an expression of the human condition. One more point about lyrics in general: the sound of the lyric is as important as the meaning. Scatting, for example, has no informational content but is a perfectly valid lyrical approach. As for this song, it has some fish imagery that relates to the astrological sign and describes the personality type associated with it. To watch Tati do her thing, you could listen to her one-take vocal performance of their song Judgement & Punishment. Here's a link: th-cam.com/video/Q5rg_63Shqg/w-d-xo.html
Exactly! Tatiana helped me realize how harsh vocals are a perfect expression of those aspects of human nature. I really only find it compelling when harsh is mixed with very skillful clean vocals for contrast, though. Tatiana is the queen!
Jinjer is a Ukrainian group. I always recommend their song "Home Back" about having to flee during the 2014 Russian/separatist takeover of their home in the Donbas region. It's sadly still relevant today and, if you're unfamiliar with the extreme vocal technique she's using, "Home Back" is a good example of where the technique is probably the best method of expressing the extreme emotions associated with war. I do recommend having the lyrics pulled up because, I agree, the technique does tend to make the lyrics harder to catch. Tatiana tends to shock people into missing what's going on around her, but the band members are phenomenal players and the rhythms are very progressive with odd/less-used time signatures. Now that you've been exposed to the shock factor, maybe you will notice more of that.
Man, reaction to this song never gets old. :) Your face was priceless. 😂 There are several female vocalist who can do this. Alissa White-Gluz, Adrienne Cowan and even Floor Jansen (listen to Yours is an empty hope, Wembley 2015).
I think watching classical singers and vocal coaches react to this song is gonna be a new comfort thing for me. the surprise moment is always brilliant.
My favourite sport lately 😂😂
It is for me for sure
She broke herself with no choices in that matter regardless of being a strong lady. Her life got fucked not her . Power pay attention ladies okay. She is amazing as she is. No accept just love for who she is.
The whole damn band is amazing though. Truth
... to help remove confusion... the line is "Scale armor BELIES virgin innocence"...
Heck out “The Charismatic Voice” , Elizabeth Zharoff and her interviews with Will Ramos. They actually put a camera in his throat and recorded his vocal folds while he was singing like this!
This song goes from 7/8 to 6/8 regularly. It gives it its edge even in the smooth sections. Vlad, the drummer, is a classically-trained pianist.
Yeah... but the best part is when it goes from 0 to 100!
this video was made to Highlight the new drummers (Vlad) skills, and Take on Pisces.
0:10-0:46 7/8
I understand your point about counting it as 3/4 and 4/4 alternating here if you want, no argument.
0:46-1:06 6/8 Here however its a swing type feel. 7 doesn't fit, its only six.
4:23-4:32 I count as 4/4 but could be subdivided as 3/8 and 5/8 repeating if that feels better for ya.
I would suggest watching the One Take Live performance of "Judgement and Punishment", so you can see her body and facial adjustments as she sings very clearly as it stays focused on her.
i highly agree with this... a prefect side view of her singing the entire song
Yes definitely agree!
Hell yes.. That cut is amazing
Thank you for this!
absolutely agree - Perenial and Judgment and Punishment should be next to react to.
@Soprano Notes Just FYI, if you do the Wacken performance, it's in Germany so it's pronounced Vocken.
Love the FACT that you're DEFINITELY NOT READY for the change in her vocal dynamics when she changes... (NOBODY is ready straight off the bat, so to speak). PRICELESS!!!!
Unless this isn't the first Jinjer song you've heard. Since others are more like Death Metal throughout.
(Subbed)
@Jeff Wellman is 100% correct. Also Judgement and Punishment One Take is probably my favorite performance of hers

I don’t think I noticed her gauges, nice point. Thanks for bringing some clarity to the song meaning 😊
This song is about the suffering of animals. In this instance fish

Thank you for reacting to this Jess.....I LIVE to see a reactor caught off-guard! 😂🤩
Never gets old watching the first time people see the transition to *that* voice!
Thanks for the lyric reference! I just could not understand that line at all.
Also looking forward to seeing her more closely in performances.
Tatiana has actually said herself that it is blaze in a livestream where someone asked it, but i agree it sounds more like belies
Definitely "scale armor belies".

Thanks for sharing your interpretation
Great synopsis.
Who’s Gonna Be The One
The live version should be your next reaction to Jinjer.
Great explanation, Jeff! This helps a ton ☺
@@jessicasopranonotes check out eivor from the faeroese islands. she has some serious vocal techniques you've never heard before, from high to low, from tribal to modern, including kulning and throat singing.
Agreed, seen them twice in concert so far and it's always and awesome show!
I hope you'll check out their other stuff too because Pisces is really just an entry point, effective for reaction videos because of the surprise, but they have so many better songs than this one 😄
"Perennial live at Wacken" is a good example of how they perform live ❤
Yes .. Perennial Live at Wacken is an excellent 2nd listen 👆👆
You are amazing! Perfect commentary and reaction! ❤
Thank you! 😃
An awesome performance, which showcases the top-drawer talent of Jinjer ... a must see!🙂👍
Welcome to the Jinjer family! :)
The song is about the mythos of the PISCES sign and what it teaches us. The back and white balanced within the same being, the multiple sides of our own personality, the eternal struggle within us, the battle between light and dark that makes us all human.
Every musician in Jinjer is a master of their craft. Vlad, the drummer is an accomplished classical pianist for crying out loud :) LOL
Taty is simply mind blowing, her growling technique is second to none, but her sultry first register combined with her powerful belts just makes it for a complete singer.

I have seen Jinjer live twice, and will see them a 3rd time in August, and I can tell you she is as good vocally live as she is in the studio.
Vigo's response: "oh."
Priceless!
A good video to watch her expressions while screaming is judgment & punishment. It also has a more funky/reggae style to it. Highly recommend.
Really like the way you did your editing on this video, bringing in clips of the song covering exactly what you're talking about.
You predicted it and still weren't ready. Lol.
7:10 You feel the work needed to grawl properly, without destroying your vocal chords despite they are "Heavy duty" for this exercise. And yes, she can litterally grawl at anyone, anywhere, anytime, that's her level of mastering the technique and the instrument (it is her voice, of course !) ❤ And just to say, switching from sweet to grawl or inverse is an exercise by itself 😅
12:40 Yes, you say it right, it is that contrast making a great rock ballad !
Grawling with grace is not given to everyone, thank you for refreshing Jinjer in my deficient memory ❤👍🖖
The entire band is so talented it's refreshing and kinda scary how good they are
Wow, thoughtful analysis - respect! (And as a musician and theory geek was happy to hear you pick out the Sol - or min 9th - chord the guitarist played during the verses:)
Jinjer is one of the best progressive metal bands in the game now. What’s more they’re all essentially war refugees from east Ukraine which makes them that much more special.
Спасибо за эмоциональный и душевный отзыв! Татьяна никого не оставляет равнодушным!
Seconding Sleep Token @Soprano Notes. "Take me back to Eden", for instance, will not disappoint you I think.
JEFF was HERE 👇 yayyyyyyyyyyyy 🎉🎉
This and Dimash are both in my wheelhouse
Another soprano you should check out is Zora of Blackbriar.
Zora is magical
No one else like her
And how she voice mastery of the subtle tones runs and flips.
Tatiana is a vocal beast. Also, your subs should blow up now. Great reaction.
Okay, this has to be the best reaction to Jinjer that I've heard so far.
The one take vocal performance of "Judgement & Punishment" really shows her physical transitioning from singing into growls.
Such a great analysis :) well done. Your love and interest for any kind of music is really inspiring
Best first pause ever. EVERY single one of us knew what was coming!
My favorite band for the last 2 years. Tati, the best at what she does and the 'players' are amazing. A perfect blend that makes...JINJER.
The best there is. The GOAT. Must see Judgement and Punishment one take vocal, Wallflower, Vortex, Perennial live at Wacken, Teacher Teacher, Mediator is a face melter lol. Every song kills.
Even the most seasoned metal listener cant catch all the lyrics but when u read along they become clear as day.
I absolutely love your analysis that's coming from your operatic training.
Pisces the fish has a duality and that's what the lyrics denote.
One brings life.
The second rush to death.
I hope that this helps makes sense of the lyrics.
I love watching reactions to this song. Nobody is ever prepared, and it is always great to see the reaction lmao
This is called growling. Tatiana, number one growly girl. The first line of the chorus is "scale armor belies virgin innocence." Do "Pit of Consciousness(live in Kiev)" next its her deepest offering IMO.
Its "Scale armor Blaze"
Tati and Eugene had verified this a couple of years ago
Love listening to you break things down.
Two words on how she does it: vestibular folds
I appreciate the feedback! Thank you ☺️
Great video!
The only song which gave me spontaneous goosebumps within the last 10 years. Thank you for the proposal, YT-algorithm...
I've watched this video several hundred times and I still get chills every time I watch it
I second others below, watch Jinjer's Judgement & Punishment.
The music and vocals represent moodiness of Pisces
From the music aspects it gives the feeling of waves coming and going
I love JINJER!!! that Fry Scream at the end, mind blown!
I'll highlight a few lyrics as I understand them:
"step forward and meet a new sunrise, a coward is shivering inside"
(though we can in some settings/circumstances seem bold pisces usually lean more toward introversion and may also be prone to inaction)
"today I'll be a friend of mine and swallow suffering with smile"
(sometimes we are our own friend but often compared to most people we have internal conflicts with ourselves and when we are facing these and similar stresses it likely won't be apparent from the outside)
"No promises I'll ever give, don't rely on me and I won't deceive"
(We're often avoidant of commitment, but will frequently lie sometimes intentionally sometimes unintentionally to people-please. I may offer help and not intend to give it or I may offer help and very well intend to give it but be subconsciously aware it's something I'm not capable of or can't deliver.)
"the beginning or the end you can't tell when I wave my fin and shake my tail"
(The waving of fin and tail is our relationships the waving fin might be meeting a new person if it's someone we will become good friends with or someone we will probably never speak to again might not be discernable from how we carry ourselves. The tail might lend more toward relationships of more significant nature for those of us who experience those kinds of attraction we may fall in and out of love/lust quickly/easily OR be hot and cold about expressing it externally)
"neptune's child shivering inside, drowns in the liquid gold"
(the previously mentioned inner turmoil can sometimes fuel us but may also lead to frequently feeling overwhelmed)
"cherished his life to the underworld"
(some of us may be prone to a somewhat pessimistic outlook)
"meet me flashing when the winter cries"
(winter a time of coldness and death possibly symbolizing depression and crying likewise grief; these are two emotional states we might be prone to slip in and out of 'flickering or flashing' more commonly than the average person.)
"pisces swimming through the river, all their life against the stream"
(certain universal truths of the human experience of being alive such as the way humans interact, life and what comes after, etc. may be things hard for pisces to handle or reconcile so while many different paths are available in life for a pisces it may be that none of them are the path of least resistance and being alive will just always be generally hard)
"searching for a hook to catch on and see their sunbeam"
( we may be drawn to a fall sense of where we belong and or things that bring about detriment or demise to us)
"then suffocate in painful tortures on cutting tables of callous men, under the knife of handsome butchers emeralds are ripped away"
(we may be particularly easy to take advantage of by people we trust as well as aspects that others value in us like wise emotional council, peaceful social atmosphere may be lost as a result leaving us jaded and/or burnt out from extrovert energy)
Following an aquatic theme, would love to hear and see your analysis and reaction to: Epica ft.
I just loved your reaction, it got emotional for me. I think this band is totally King, incredible musicians and a crazy kicking .. of a singer 🤓🇸🇪❤
I find great joy in watching oeople react to my girl. Shes amazing ❤
Your face was priceless. 😂
There are several female vocalist who can do this.
Alissa White-Gluz, Adrienne Cowan and even Floor Jansen (listen to Yours is an empty hope, Wembley 2015).
