I feel 7/8 in the beginning guitar riff and 6/8 when the drum beat changes still in the verse. However the count for the pre chorus is a 4/4 feeling to me with the rimshots, and the chorus is a "4/4" feeling as well but with 5 bars before it repeats. A lot of the djent type of music does a lot of over the bar type of riffs. The way the time changes are so seamless, keeps me coming back to this song.

    • @janfransson5910
      @janfransson5910 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Just FYI. It alternates between 3/4 and 4/4 during the first two verses, another way of saying that is that it's at 7/8 all the time, but it does not go from 7/8 to 6/8.

I understand your point about counting it as 3/4 and 4/4 alternating here if you want, no argument.
0:46-1:06 6/8 Here however its a swing type feel. 7 doesn't fit, its only six.
4:23-4:32 I count as 4/4 but could be subdivided as 3/8 and 5/8 repeating if that feels better for ya.

This studio session is basically a studio recording for the "at the time" new drummer, Vlad, so the vocals are the album version with layers, etc. Tatiana is a Pisces, and the soft/harsh vocals are reflecting the duality of the two sides of her personality, along with the fish references and her plugs in her earlobes have fish on them.
The most common follow ups to Pisces are one of a couple live concert performances, like "Perrenial" at Wacken 2019, or "Who is gonna be the one" which I believe was at an Atlas Festival. Others go directly to her One Take Vocal performance of "Judgement & Punishment", which is just the camera on her singing in a booth at her home the entire time, so you can see what she's doing as she sings.

Yeah, Eugene said in an interview that live vocals have a slight delay on it, but studio vocals are doubled and the harsh vocals have a pitch shifter and slight distortion on it which seems to be par for the course when producing this style of music. If you listen to concert footage you get the raw experience of her extreme vocals.

What for? It would just remove the clarity of Tatiana's enunciation when growling and that's something she would never agree with. And it's not like she needs it, really.

This song is pretty much all about Tati. How she is usually giving, kind and selfless. But she can be self critical and insecure and shy. But today she's going to be a friend to herself. Meaning she's gonna cut herself some slack instead of being overtly self critical. The harsh parts refer to the walls she puts up like armor. ie fish scales look like chain mail glistening in the sun. Fish being the sign for Pisces. Sometimes she can be fun and full of life and sometimes she can be self destructive.

Two of the band members are Pisces. The singer, Tatiana and the Bassist, Eugene. Both of them contributed lyrically to this song but Tati is the main lyricist for most of their songs. Yes, this song is about being a Pisces and embraces the duality of the sign (one being brings life, another runs for death). Did you notice the little goldfish in her gauges? Great reaction! So glad you enjoyed it! Jinjer is really unlike anyone else in the business right now. They are a full package with near perfect synergy. A general term for growling is harsh vocals, which can include the low false cord roar and the higher vocal fry scream which is more common in "screamo". Jinjer calls themselves progressive metalcore and groove metal. There are so many good songs, I would recommend "Perennial" live at Wacken, "Judgement and Punishment" one take, (as you can see Tati close up), and "Teacher, Teacher". The drummer is Vlad, and they made this video to showcase him and really was a perfect fit. He is actually a classically trained pianist. I agree about the point of entry. Pisces is the gateway drug. And I know the band themselves don't regard it as one of their favorite songs. Maybe they got tired of the same reactions over and over, everyone freaking on Tatiana's vocal duality, when the video was meant to showcase new drummer Vlad. But to me Pisces is a classical level composition that perfectly highlights the stylistic contrasts of the band, establishing a mood, subtly building tension leading into the shock of the chorus; with peaks and valleys, each peak cresting subtly higher and higher into the final payoff of the last crescendo as emeralds are ripped away. It's an emotional rollercoaster, and the lyrics express and follow the duality perfectly. For me Pisces is the perfect distillation of Jinjer's sound and style. Not their heaviest song by a long shot, nor their most complex. But one of their more expressive and well-crafted distillations of their niche. Contrast.

Yay! Another Jinjer Pisces reaction that I hadn't seen :) Me and a few others make a hobby of watching reactions to this song :) A few tidbits I've learned about Tatiana and the band: "Heavy Vocals" a.k.a. the growl utilises a different part of the throat - the part that we use to make a heave sound. It took Tatiana 12 years to train her growl this way. But this is how she can switch cleanly between the two styles. Another bit of info: This video was made to highlight their new drummer, who has had no formal training in drums - he is a classically trained pianist who taught himself so he could play in Jinjer. A great one to prove she's actually making that noise is Perennial Live at Wacken. Welcome to Jinjer!

The song is about the mythos of the PISCES sign and what it teaches us. The back and white balanced within the same being, the multiple sides of our own personality, the eternal struggle within us, the battle between light and dark that makes us all human.
Every musician in Jinjer is a master of their craft. Vlad, the drummer is an accomplished classical pianist for crying out loud :) LOL
Taty is simply mind blowing, her growling technique is second to none, but her sultry first register combined with her powerful belts just makes it for a complete singer. She is also a great poet and she brings that into the fold for Jinjer.
I am yet to hear one bad song by them, these guys are simply the BEST "new" metal band around right now in my humble opinion. Their songs mix complex time signatures with beautiful and catchy melodies with POP sensibilities. Add in absolutely brutal passages and it is a tough combination to beat.

First and foremost, if that’s your voice at the end, I want to hear more of that.
Second, I love this very respectful reaction. I have an intense fascination for opera; I think it’s a wonderful enigma. So it is quite a treat to hear what an opera vocalist thinks of one of my favorite metal videos. This band is from Ukraine and they toured very close to non-stop for their First Seven Years - going through personnel changes in the process. I got into Jinjer’s music at one of the hardest times: post-divorce.
I never get sick of reactions to this one-take play through of “Pisces”. The reactions just keep coming! It’s such a beautiful song.

Welcome to the Jinjer rabbit hole. It is a rewarding one. After watching many reactions I noticed that professional musicians of ANY trade, from Hip hop through country to Opera, are most fascinated by it, because they are able to recognise what level of skill this requires (or simply - recognise greatness) and also the how cleverly it is written.

When she "growls" it's actually softer than when she sings.
That's why she has a specific type of Mic but she's been doing it for years and she can switch on a dime. She's a master at her craft.

  • @JariJuslin
    @JariJuslin ปีที่แล้ว +1

Tati is a vocal beast and renowned for switching styles instantly.
Her speaking voice is quite low for a woman, so the high belt in the end part is something she rarely does live - it'd strain her voice too much to keep singing hour and a half, so she usually growls it. On the album recording there's growl and belt overlaid.
The rough vocals here are usually referred as growling, signature for death metal and derivatives. (Jinjer defies easy genre definitions, but deathcore, mix of metalcore and death metal, is the usual label).
Because her growls are made with false vocal folds she's not limited by the range of the true vocal folds and can thus go lower than the speaking voice. But it did take some *serious* amount of practicing to get there.
This particular song is quite straightforward for Jinjer, both vocally and compositionally. Other songs feature reggae, jazz and other styles on clean vocals, often several in one song.
The lyrics you easily find on the web are wrong on the first line of the chorus: it's "scale armour belies", which makes more sense, too.
The song is about duality of pisces, reflected for example in one going for life and another for death. If you look at the opening verses, you see it describe her putting up a nice and harmless face out to hide the turmoil inside, and then the chorus kind of reveals what she tries to keep hidden. So it's again the duality - the face she puits to the world, and real her.

6:32 I grew up with death metal criticism. The easy way to explain the lyrics part is the same as opera lyrics. I watch your own performance in you channel home page and even though it’s in French (I’m Canadian and French is my first language) I couldn’t understand a word. It’s exactly the same with harsh vocals. Once you get use to the genre, your brain makes the connection and you become more aware of the lyrics. Hope that makes sense ❤

  • @mikedown3219
    @mikedown3219 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The band is Roman on guitar, Eugene on bass and Vlad on drums and, of course, Tatiana on vocals. They are from the Ukraine.
Tati is a Pisces. She wrote most of the lyrics but asked Eugene for help to finish it. He has stated that he tried to write about Tatiana but felt in the end what he wrote was like a self-confession. I believe the last six lines were his contribution.
I think the song is about a duel personality with the dark side influenced by abusive relationships (perhaps).

-After becoming a fan of reaction videos, I saw reactions for this song pop up a number of times as suggestions. I decided to check the song out and, being a Gen-X’er as well as a Pisces also, was blown away by it. After a few poor choices at the time of other songs, I am a huge fan of this band. I saw them live in December in the 1st concert that I had been to in “Damn, I’m Old!” years and seeing them again on July 31st while still going on the slow deep dive I’ve voluntarily taken.
-The two “sides” remind me of the song “This Love” by Pantera. Both start with the character that the vocalist is portraying being reserved and maybe a bit unsure of what they’re wanting to say. When it comes to the chorus, that’s when the other side comes out and takes over. With the second verse, they go back to that first side. However, they’re not as timid and are more sure of what they’re thinking. Great storytelling.
-No matter how many times I hear this song, I have to stop whatever I’m doing at “Pisces swimming through the river.” That belt will never not get me. Tatiana is such an amazing and versatile vocalist.
-As I’ve become more and more of a fan, I can’t help but see comparisons between them and Queen. The first way is that both have vocalists with incredible talent who possess a charisma that draws the audience’s attention. However, when you listen to them and get past her amazing vocals, you realize just how good the rest of the band is. You realize that this is a band and not just a singer with a backing band.
The other way is music philosophy. Years ago, I was riding around with someone when “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” came on the radio. When the person I was with asked who it was, I told them it was Queen, which drew a double take from them. They said that it didn’t sound like Queen which made me think “What does Queen sound like?” They went all across the musical spectrum and did it so well. With Jinjer, I’ve had that same feeling. They’re labeled as Metal/Metalcore but incorporate a variety of influences in a masterful way.
-While “Pisces” was the song that got my attention(I work hard not to say that it “hooked” me), what made me a fan was “Bad Water.” As I eluded to, the other songs I checked out weren’t connecting with me and I almost became just a fan of the song but not the band. What I was looking for another “Pisces” and I wasn’t getting it. One day, I checked out the official live video for “Bad Water.” After listening to it, the first thing I thought was “I get it now.”

This is an extremely artistic song. Everything about it is demonstrating the dual-oppositional nature of Pisces. Pisces is the sign that represents the balance of polar opposites. You hear the dual nature in the music, between the slow jazzy sections and the heavy metal sections, and you hear it in the vocals, between the soft melodic parts and the deep gutterals. Lyrically, it incorporates the fish symbolism of the Pisces sign, and represents the almost doomed destiny of a fish that is lured, caught and gutted. Generalized to the human world, the song tells the story of someone who has learned to live with fear and distrust because she has been lured and charmed before, but has been hurt because of it, so now she fears to trust because she is afraid of losing herself. The last line "emeralds are ripped away," refers to her scales (what makes her unique and beautiful and the essence of who she is) being stripped away on the butcher's table.

Tatiana (Tetiana, but changed for ease...) is from the Donbas region and her city of Donetsk has been occupied by Russia since the start of the war. They had to tour non stop when war broke out in Crimea because they could not return home (2012). As a result, they were broke but their music is really tight and live they are incredible. This song is their break out piece. They are touring now at the behest of their country to garner support for their people. If anyone wants, they have shirts on their Jinjer webpage with all proceeds going to help civilians in Ukraine. I never was a fan of growling, but Jinjer has become my favorite band today. I've heard this song literally more than a hundred times, and have seen as many reactions to it. Your's is one of the best! Your overall analysis of all aspects of this song was really really good (I just can't remember having heard so much intelligent reflexion of all these aspects). Especially your thoughts at the beginning that there has to come "something heavier" due to Tatis looks - 😂😂😂. And then of course your surprise painted on your face when Tatis dark growling voice starts! I appreciate too that you got into the lyrics - too bad that you didn't come to the part at the end where this "innocent virgin" little fish is slaughtered by those "handsome butchers"- for me a very poetic and at the same time very true picture of our lovely/cruel paradise/hell earth that we are condemned to live in. This becomes an even heavier touch when you consider that Jinjer is a Ukrainian band and what is happening there right now. Gives me some feeling of "shivering inside" too. . Congratulations to your reaction!👍👍👍😀And of course: You are a Pro who knows everything about voice and singing (growling and harsh vocals taking apart of course) - I bet it would be joyful hear you singing!

To me, the song is not only about the duality of the Sign, but also it's literally about the life of a fish, living free till inevitable capture brings knives to rip the emeralds (scales )away! The lyrics mention scales, her fin and tail, hooks and nets, Neptune's child and swimming through the river all your lives against the stream, searching for a hook to catch on and see the sunbeam. I think the imagery is about literally being a fish! And I love it.

The song by the by is about duality using the metaphore of the picis zodiac sing. The "scale armoour Blaze" is a reference to the armour we use to face life every day. The song also related to the struggles we all face, expecially when we can not be ourselves.

Amazing how this song has been picked apart by singers and vocal coaches yet you still offer something new. I haven't seen anyone else mention how the lyrics shift from verse to chorus. One thing I'd like to point out is the distance between Tatiana and the mic when she doing cleans versus when she's doing the growl. I've known a couple of people who can do the growl vocals and they always stay nearly on top of the mic because it's not a style where you can really project.

Hi, welcome to the "wonderful world of Jinjer" and a deep rabbit of their great songs! I've been a musician since I was a young kid and I've played in multiple bands in several genres over the years, but I was never into metal music with scream/growl harsh vocals until I discovered Jinjer near the end of 2021. I immediately loved them because of their sophisticated and varied songwriting, fantastic musicianship and the incredible vocals of Tatiana, with her amazing ability to instantly transition back and forth from her beautiful clean singing voice to some of the best harsh vocals I've heard, female or male. Tatiana taught herself how to do the harsh vocals, but according to some analysis videos I've watched by vocal coaches who are familiar with harsh vocals, she uses proper technique (with use of her false vocal chords) so she isn't causing any damage or strain to her true vocal chords. Elizabeth Zharoff has a great interview with Tatiana (over an hour) on her TH-cam channel The Charismatic Voice from about a year and a half ago. If you want to further your "Jinjer journey", I'd recommend checking out the "Live From Wacken 2019" video for their song Perennial. Tatiana's "live one take vocal performance" video of Judgement and Punishment, the official video for Wallflower (which shows their excellent songwriting and the lyrics/video relate Tatiana's struggle with being an introvert in the very public music industry, along with her tendency to procrastinate and the pressure she feels from the other band members to finish all the lyrics and record her vocals after they have finished all the music for an album), the official video for Teacher, Teacher, the Napalm Records official live video for Who Is Gonna Be The One (which has mostly harsh vocals, but it shows her incredible stage presence and it has a bit of unexpected reggae-influenced clean vocals) and the official video for Home Back (an intense song and video which was written in 2019 about the chronic fighting with Russian-backed separatists since 2014 in their homeland of the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, but it has an even greater emotional impact since sociopath Putin's 2022 all-out invasion...plus it has a very cool bossa nova-ish middle section). BTW, I love your channel and I think you're one of the nicest and smartest music reactors/analysts on TH-cam! 😁

Great video! I think you made every Jinjer fan grin when you said you thought a change was coming. We knew you still weren't expecting THAT.
I don't know where "screamo" came from, but I just refer to the vocal techniques using distortion that you often hear in metal as "harsh vocals". There are different flavors. Some sound like screaming, some like growling, sometimes there's a mix. Tatiana can do both, which you kind of hear in this one. She is more growly in the chorus, but the final line is much closer to a scream.
Pisces is kind of different from most of Jinjer's music because the point of the song is to highlight the two sides of Tatiana's thoughts and feelings. I think her clean vocals are slightly more poppy than in other songs and you've only heard a portion of her harsh vocals. I'm sure there are already tons of comments reminding Perennial live at Wacken. It's a good one, but there are plenty of other videos you'll enjoy too. Her one take performance of Judgement and Punishment will give you a clear look at her body as she sings.

I second others below, watch Jinjer's Judgement & Punishment. Amazing! This song is so poetic and such a beautiful melding of the themes of water, and a beautiful expression of the personality traits of the astrological sign Pisces. I loved watching you as you observed Tati do a "Pisces flip" in the song. Yin/Yang, light/dark, sweet/rageful. The music flows softly, like a calm stream, with her gentle voice, and then crashes into the rocks as she screams, and finally with that huge belt, it cascades over a huge cliff into the ocean. So powerful.

Loved your reaction. I couldn't believe that sound came out of her either, the first time I heard them...now I love them. I also appreciate it that, although the growl is not your cup of tea, you were very fascinated by it. Also, I like that you acknowledged the talent of the other band members.

Been a huge fan of this song and band since discovering it and them, this composition in many ways lends to a very ebb and flow quality similar of water. The lyrics I can greatly relate to. I'll highlight a few lyrics as I understand them:
"step forward and meet a new sunrise, a coward is shivering inside"
(though we can in some settings/circumstances seem bold pisces usually lean more toward introversion and may also be prone to inaction)
"today I'll be a friend of mine and swallow suffering with smile"
(sometimes we are our own friend but often compared to most people we have internal conflicts with ourselves and when we are facing these and similar stresses it likely won't be apparent from the outside)
"No promises I'll ever give, don't rely on me and I won't deceive"
(We're often avoidant of commitment, but will frequently lie sometimes intentionally sometimes unintentionally to people-please. I may offer help and not intend to give it or I may offer help and very well intend to give it but be subconsciously aware it's something I'm not capable of or can't deliver.)
"the beginning or the end you can't tell when I wave my fin and shake my tail"
(The waving of fin and tail is our relationships the waving fin might be meeting a new person if it's someone we will become good friends with or someone we will probably never speak to again might not be discernable from how we carry ourselves. The tail might lend more toward relationships of more significant nature for those of us who experience those kinds of attraction we may fall in and out of love/lust quickly/easily OR be hot and cold about expressing it externally)
"neptune's child shivering inside, drowns in the liquid gold"
(the previously mentioned inner turmoil can sometimes fuel us but may also lead to frequently feeling overwhelmed)
"cherished his life to the underworld"
(some of us may be prone to a somewhat pessimistic outlook)
"meet me flashing when the winter cries"
(winter a time of coldness and death possibly symbolizing depression and crying likewise grief; these are two emotional states we might be prone to slip in and out of 'flickering or flashing' more commonly than the average person.)
"pisces swimming through the river, all their life against the stream"
(certain universal truths of the human experience of being alive such as the way humans interact, life and what comes after, etc. may be things hard for pisces to handle or reconcile so while many different paths are available in life for a pisces it may be that none of them are the path of least resistance and being alive will just always be generally hard)
"searching for a hook to catch on and see their sunbeam"
( we may be drawn to a fall sense of where we belong and or things that bring about detriment or demise to us)
"then suffocate in painful tortures on cutting tables of callous men, under the knife of handsome butchers emeralds are ripped away"
(we may be particularly easy to take advantage of by people we trust as well as aspects that others value in us like wise emotional council, peaceful social atmosphere may be lost as a result leaving us jaded and/or burnt out from extrovert energy)

I highly recommend watching every other Jinjer song recommended in the comments, for a close up look at screaming vocals, the charismatic voice teamed up with a different metal singer, Will Ramos, stuck a throat camera down his throat while he screamed and… it’s so cool

I so enjoyed your reaction and analysis to this one, Jess! Jinjer was my gateway band to some harsher vocal styles. Tati is such an accomplished singer to start with that the growling seems more like just another texture for her vocal. I realized at some point that these harsh vocal sounds are meant to reveal the darkness within human beings; places of anguish, cruelty, despair. They're an expression of the human condition. One more point about lyrics in general: the sound of the lyric is as important as the meaning. Scatting, for example, has no informational content but is a perfectly valid lyrical approach. As for this song, it has some fish imagery that relates to the astrological sign and describes the personality type associated with it. To watch Tati do her thing, you could listen to her one-take vocal performance of their song Judgement & Punishment. Here's a link: th-cam.com/video/Q5rg_63Shqg/w-d-xo.html

Exactly! Tatiana helped me realize how harsh vocals are a perfect expression of those aspects of human nature. I really only find it compelling when harsh is mixed with very skillful clean vocals for contrast, though. Tatiana is the queen!

Jinjer is a Ukrainian group. I always recommend their song "Home Back" about having to flee during the 2014 Russian/separatist takeover of their home in the Donbas region. It's sadly still relevant today and, if you're unfamiliar with the extreme vocal technique she's using, "Home Back" is a good example of where the technique is probably the best method of expressing the extreme emotions associated with war. I do recommend having the lyrics pulled up because, I agree, the technique does tend to make the lyrics harder to catch.
Tatiana tends to shock people into missing what's going on around her, but the band members are phenomenal players and the rhythms are very progressive with odd/less-used time signatures. Now that you've been exposed to the shock factor, maybe you will notice more of that.

Man, reaction to this song never gets old. :)
    Your face was priceless. 😂
There are several female vocalist who can do this.
Alissa White-Gluz, Adrienne Cowan and even Floor Jansen (listen to Yours is an empty hope, Wembley 2015).
